  • An Interview with Alan Paul, Author of “Brothers and Sisters” Ahead of Summer Jam 50

Alan Paul, writer of New York Times bestsellers “One Way Out: The Inside History of the Allman Brothers Band” and “Texas Flood: the Inside Story of Stevie Ray Vaughan,” is releasing his new book, “Brothers and Sisters: The Allman Brothers Band and the Inside Story of the Album That Defined the 70s,” on July 25. The release coincides with the 50th anniversary of the 1973 Watkins Glen Summer Jam that featured the Allman Brothers Band, the Grateful Dead, and The Band.

The book dives into the history of the Brothers and Sisters album, the Allman Brothers Band’s best-selling album with an influential cultural and musical legacy. Alan Paul notably includes never-before-heard interviews conducted by Kirk West, the Allman Brothers Band’s “Tour Mystic.” Stories within feature familiar faces like Jimmy Carter, Cher, Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, and Susan Sarandon.

Several chapters are dedicated to the Summer Jam at Watkins Glen in 1973. The event drew in 600,000 attendants near the small town of Watkins Glen in the Finger Lakes region. It has been remembered as a record-smasher in terms of size and legacy.

Alan Paul himself also is a part of the tribute band Friends of the Brothers, in which the members were closely associated with the original band. They continue to bring the sounds of the Allman Brothers Band to new audiences and will play on July 29 at Lincoln Farms to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Watkins Glen as well as on July 30 to promote the book at the City Winery in New York City. More details after the interview.

New York State Music interviewed Paul before the release of the book. The following is a trimmed-down transcript of that interview which discusses Paul’s inspiration, his thoughts on the Brothers and Sisters album, details from his research, and more.

NYS Music: You’re involved in celebrating the Allman Brothers Band through the Friends of the Brothers, but what made you come back and write “Brothers and Sisters?” Did you feel like something missing from “One Way Out,” or was there just a different story you wanted to tell?

Paul: It’s not so much missing from “One Way Out” as… it came out of a conversation I had with Brad Tolinski, who was the long-time editor of Guitar World… it just came up and he was just egging me on. I said “I’ve said my Allman Brother piece,” and he said, “No man, there’s more to say.” He was egging me on and said “Look, the 50th anniversary of Brothers and Sisters is coming up and I feel like it’s just still so unexplored.” I started thinking about it and digging into it a bit, and I came to think he was right.

It really was the most popular era, and it holds up really well. It’s not like it’s being such an era piece that it’s an embarrassment now… and yet it was an era that was largely forgotten, even by the band’s biggest fans.

NYSM: Of course, Brothers and Sisters is a very influential album. For you, personally, what made you want to pursue writing about it specifically? What does it mean to you?

Paul: When I write these books… I dig in really really deep, so I throw myself into it for a year or two. I really have to like the music, first of all. It also has to be a great story because it is in writing, it is a book. It’s not just like “Oh, this album is great. Isn’t it great?” You can’t say that for hundreds of pages. There has to be a story and a plot. I just found this whole era very intriguing. And again, as I said, it was unusual because it was really popular, really vital, and yet it was sort of unexplored.

Then we had this type of lineup with one guitar and keyboards during this period. The rest of the time they were a two guitar band. I think that is also why fans overlook it, and it ended pretty ugly, which I document pretty thoroughly…. I feel like people ended up focused on the end and the ugliness of the era rather than the beginning of the era and how cool it was.

NYSM: Something that really caught my eye were the interviews, including the never-before-heard interviews by Kirk West. How did you get access to them or find out about their existence?

Paul: Kirk West has been a friend for 30 years… Kirk was the “tour mystic” for the Allman Brothers. The title came about because he was the tour manager, but he did so much more than the average tour manager that he needed a special name… he was their historian or archivist.

He told me that he had been working on a book. At that point it was the early ’90s… he said that he was writing a book on the band and he was doing all of these interviews. I started asking him to write a sample chapter for Guitar World. My thought at that point was that this would be a good story for Guitar World…. He eventually said “I love the idea, but I’m not really a writer and I don’t have time. But I can collaborate on it with someone.” That someone became me.

I called Kirk and asked what he thought about [“Brothers and Sisters”]. He was very enthusiastic, and we would talk about it. Very early in that process, after that, he offered me and said “Would you like to have my interview tapes?” Of course I said yes, and they were a gold mine… it was an honor and a privilege to have access to them.

NYSM: Among those interviews, was there anything that you found, maybe not necessarily surprising, but something that you were just very interested in? A new perspective or something like that?

Paul: I mean, there was so much of that really, that its hard to pinpoint, but there were a specific things that were quite amazing. I had a good relationship with Gregg [Allman] and I interviewed him many many times. There were certain things that you just sort of knew, either because you were told or just knew that they were off-limits… he went there with Kirk.

For instance, the relationship with Cher, I felt I was able to have a real depth to the way I wrote about it… Gregg talked about it so much in ways that he really never did again afterwards. That was one of the things you couldn’t really expect of Gregg. Another one of those things was the drug trial.

The other thing was interviews with a few people who are deceased, including Gregg, but I had a lot of great stuff from Gregg… so there would’ve been ways to get around that. Just for instance, Steve Massarsky… he was their manager, he was the lawyer who came in and helped them sort out the mess that the business had become and take on, ultimately, their manager Phil Walden… [Also] Bill Graham, the great promoter who was very very important to the Allman Brothers, and to the Grateful Dead, and to Watkins Glen.

NYSM: Could you go more into the connection of the Allman Brothers Band and Southern Rock to Jimmy Carter and his campaigning?

Paul: Jimmy Carter himself has said many times that he would never have been president without the Allman Brothers… they were central to the whole thing… and that was for a variety of reasons. The most direct, most obvious reason is that they raised a lot of money for him…They really helped raise his profile at a time when he was completely unknown.

[Manager Phil Walden] was an early Carter supporter and he was the one who was crucial in getting these guys behind them. Once they were, they really were all in. It wasn’t just something they threw off, it wasn’t a matter of convenience, and it wasn’t a matter of just pleasing Phil Walden… it was because they really really genuinely like Jimmy Carter.

NYSM: For those that may be interested, in diving into the histories of these iconic bands, where would you advise them to go, and what would you advise them to read, beyond your wonderful biographies?

Paul: So obviously they have to start with my books, but it depends on what their interests are… It’s just like listening to music for me. A lot of people got into the blues because they liked the Allman Brothers… Writing is the same way. If you read my books and you like them, then take the part you like and dig deeper.

I try to write in a way so that you will have a better understanding of music… but also of the era and of other people… that’s my goal, I hope I pull it off. Keep reading, keep digging deeper, whatever the aspect is that is most intriguing to you, read more about it.

On July 29, Alan Paul and Friends of the Brothers will be playing at Summer Jam ’23 at Lincoln Hill Farms, NY to celebrate 50 years since Watkins Glen. • Les Claypool’s Frog Brigade Announces Fall Tour, Palace Theatre and Brooklyn Steel Shows

Tickets are now available for Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade’s “Hunt For Green October” fall tour, with dates in Brooklyn and Albany. The rock band recently reformed after a 20-year hiatus, and has just completed their “Summer of Green” tour.

The band was originally formed by Les Claypool in 2000 during a break from his other band, Primus, with a debut appearance at the Mountain Aire Festival. They would go on to tour around the U.S., release two live albums, and release the studio album, Purple Onion.

Claypool himself has also been involved with Primus’s recent “A Tribute To Kings” tour, as well as Primus’s first new music in over five years. This 3-track EP, Conspiranoid, includes the 11-minute “Conspiranoia.”

Les Claypool’s Frog Brigade will have a new, two-set show for their fall tour, going more into their catalog. The “Hunt For Green October” tour will be the last opportunity to hear the Frog Brigade’s take on Pink Floyd‘s Animals. The song will be played at every show in its entirety.

Let’s put it this way… I think, with Primus and without, I’ve played every music festival in the last ten years, except Lilith Fair. You could say I’m the guy who doesn’t fit in anywhere, but a little bit everywhere.

Theatre Withins Annual John Lennon Tribute celebrates John Lennon’s life, music, and highest values of peace and love. “With its joyful Annual John Lennon Tribute and John Lennon Real Love Project, Theatre Within is furthering the vision that John and I shared for a better world,” said Yoko Ono. Graham Nash is the ninth recipient of the John Lennon Real Love Award. Previous recipients include Natalie Merchant, Patti Smith, Ani DiFranco, and Donovan.

This is a very special award. I thank Yoko [Ono] and the Theatre Within for thinking of me. Over many years, I watched John and Yoko ‘fight the good fight’ for many whose voices were not being heard, a fight that Yoko continues to this day. I’m proud to be associated with the many fine artists who were previously honored with the John Lennon Real Love Award.

    Graham Nash.

Nash’s remarkable career spans from the British invasion with the Hollies to the legendary Laurel Canyon scene with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, for which he won a Grammy, to his still vibrant solo concerts and recordings. He is a two-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, once for CSN in 1997 and once for The Hollies in 2010.

Nash will play some of his favorite Lennon/Beatles classics and will be joined by several acts. These include folk legend Judy Collins, who will make her first Tribute appearance in over a decade. Rosanne Cash will perform for the third time, the first since she was chosen as 2018’s John Lennon Real Love Award honoree, and Grammy award-winner Rita Coolidge will make a rare live appearance, her first ever at the long-running benefit concert. Finally, drummer/percussionist Rich Pagano, a founding member of the Fab Faux, will serve as Music Director for the 15th consecutive year.

Proceeds from the Tribute support Theatre Within’s ongoing free workshops in creative expression and mindfulness, including the John Lennon Real Love Project songwriting program. Theatre Within is also providing 200 free workshops for children and adults impacted by cancer through the Red Door Community (formerly Gilda’s Club NYC) and other regional cancer support communities.

  • Kyle Smith and Pat Tato to Perform at Funk n Waffles

Funk n Waffles, a one-of-a-kind venue in Syracuse, will be hosting Kyle Smith and Pat Tato on August 11th as a stop on the “Grill Em All Tour.”

The Food Network featured venue truly embodies its name – not only do they serve delicious breakfast, lunch, dinner, desert, and of course, waffles, but they truly bring the “funk” with live music every night, and a full bar. Performances by Kyle Smith and Pat Tato ensure a night of ambitious music, delicious food, and talent that you won’t want to miss.

Kyle Smith, a singer-songwriter from Ventura, California, is best known for his unique blend of “Cali-Reggae,” influenced by Ska, Hip-Hop, and Punk-Rock, a combination that is simultaneously catchy, raw, and truthful. Kyle’s music often pays tribute to his troubled youth and addiction. His self-titled debut EP offers a glimpse into the life he endured, with songs like “Dope Fiend” and “Jaded” referencing his troubled past, all while keeping an uplifting spirit and tempo. Despite his roots, Kyle’s goal in life is to give hope and spread positivity through his music. His raw, natural talent is effortless, and his personality immediately warms up the room, inviting those around into his world.

Pat Tato, known for his unique, thought-provoking sound, was not always a solo artist. In 2013, the band Baked Potatoes could be found playing nearly every house party, skate shop, and dive bar at SUNY Oneonta. In the years following, Pat and the rest of the Baked Potatoes graduated college and recorded their first full length album, ‘Loaded’ (2016) to much critical acclaim. Following their graduation and album release, the band found themselves taking a hiatus as the original members moved to Ohio, Arizona, Tennessee, and Alaska. Aaron and Pat decided to live on a bus, continuing to play music and drive up and down the east coast, busking on the street. Eventually, Pat shifted focus and started releasing music as Pat Tato. The sound is different, ambitious, lyrical, and thought provoking.

Since then, Pat Tato has a new band and has started to emerge on the Festival Circuit as an early crowd favorite. He combines set lists of old Baked Potatoes songs with New Pat Tato songs, and continues to evolve and mature into the new sound that is ‘Pat Tato & the Baked Potatoes.’

  • Ronnie James Dio Documentary “DIO: Dreamers Never Die” Set To Release On DVD

Mercury Studios recently announced that “DIO: Dreamers Never Die”, the first-ever career documentary of legendary rock artist Ronnie James Dio, will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray on September 29. There will also be a special Deluxe Edition of the film which will include exclusive merchandise. All of the upcoming versions of the documentary will feature 20 minutes worth of deleted and extended scenes.

The South by Southwest film festival originally debuted “DIO: Dreamers Never Die” in 2022. The film garnered praise from critics and fans alike, eventually making its way to theaters. Digitally, the documentary can be found on SHOWTIME.

Ronnie James Dio, was born in New Hampshire but grew up in Cortland, New York. At the age of 5, he began playing the trumpet. Despite piecing together a somewhat successful career on trumpet and bass, Dio became enthralled with heavy rock as he grew up.

The artist would help to create the band Elf in 1967. While the group’s music was not as hard or heavy as the kind that Dio would eventually be known for, Elf provided the New Yorker a space to experiment and practice his vocals. It was his unique and passionate singing that eventually landed Dio a spot with Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow (Rainbow).

“DIO: Dreamers Never Die” chronicles Dio’s transition from a budding instrumentalist into a full fledged rock star with Rainbow.  The vocalist helped to pen and arrange many of the band’s most noteworthy songs. Some of Rainbow’s biggest hits came with Dio, including standout tracks “The Temple Of The King” and “Man On The Silver Mountain”.

After leaving Rainbow in 1979, Dio would replace Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath. While the artist would reach mainstream notoriety with the group, he never truly felt at home with the outfit. Dio left Black Sabbath just three years later. The vocalist would go on to create his own band aptly named “Dio” where he released the critically acclaimed album Holy Diver

The documentary features unseen photos and footage from Dio’s tremendous career. “DIO: Dreamers Never Die” offers an intimate look into the musician’s relationship with manager and wife Wendy Dio, bandmates Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler, and many more.

Dio’s estate fully authorized and approved the film. Don Argott and Demian Fenton directed the project. Wendy Dio also executive produced “DIO: Dreamers Never Die.”

I wanted this documentary to be authentic, for the fans to see the roller coaster ride that was Ronnie’s life—the good times, the bad times and everything in between, especially including events that even the most diehard fans would not have known about. It’s all in there, right up to the very end

  • Iguana Death Cult Announce North American Tour Dates

The critically acclaimed Dutch rock band Iguana Death Cult shared their highly anticipated LP Echo Palace earlier this year. Introduced with four stellar singles, “I Just Want A House,” “Oh No,” “Pushermen,” and “Sensory Overload,” the record received praise from outlets such as DIY, Under the Radar, American Songwriter, Paste, and more.

To celebrate their new album, the band has recently announced a string of North American tour dates, with a handful of East Coast shows with Frankie and the Witch Fingers. The tour will make stops in New York State cities including New York City and Rochester.

This new tour follows Iguana Death Cult’s last 2023 US appearance at this year’s SXSW (Austin, TX), where they played a total of nine showcases. Following the festival, Paste Magazine noted that the band was one of the “20 Best Acts” they saw at the festival.

“I knew I had to see Iguana Death Cult as soon as I heard the band’s name. And they didn’t disappoint. From the word ‘go,’ the whole crowd was dancing and pushing to their garage and psych-rock extravaganza.”

The aftermath of the pandemic can best be described as a time of unease, the people of the world suddenly grew wary and suspicious of one another. During this time, Iguana Death Cult, one of Europe’s most exciting rock exports, became more than just a band to its members – it became therapy.

“I think for the first ten times we went to jam,” says guitarist/vocalist Tobias Opschoor, speaking about the process of making the new album Echo Palace, “we just drank wine and I talked about it, and just kept on talking for hours – and then were like, ‘OK, I have to go because I have to go to work tomorrow.”

Taking place at frontman Jeroen Reek’s apartment in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, these gatherings slowly shifted from talking about this surreal chapter of their lives — the days of quiet streets and cramped buildings — to making music about it. “I was living in a really crappy, leaky, ready-for-demolition apartment,” explains Reek, “with just one heat source—like a really old-school, gas stove kind of thing.” Working on cold nights, they had to gather around that heater together— a cozy approach that ultimately got their creative flow going, fast.

Armed with the talents of Justin Boer on bass and Arjen van Opstal on drums, and tapping the keys work Jimmy de Kok for the first time on album, the band took their trademark melodic garage-rock style and expanded it out to make it vibier and looser, with each member contributing ideas to develop the sound palette in full. “We all get into this sort of blender and then everybody gives a little bit of a flavor to it,” says Opschoor.

The sounds they started to make tapped into the band’s acerbic bite established on their first two LPs, 2017’s The First Stirrings of Hideous Insect Life and 2019’s Nude Casino — albums that sometimes felt like Parquet Courts colliding with Super Furry Animals.

Their explosive performances of these records turned them into a cult live act among psych fans, who have followed the band everywhere from Amsterdam to Austin. But working on this new album, huddled together as the world split apart, everything began to flutter like Remain in Light.

    Echo Palace

Echo Palace may be the Iguana Death Cult music that’s most overtly about the strange cause and effect of groupthink, but the theme has been lurking there since the very beginning, when the band was first formed by childhood friends Reek and Opschoor over ten years ago.

The name of Iguana Death Cult is a partial nod to Reek’s fascination with cults in general — and the “Iguana” part is a nod to Iggy Pop, whose first band was the Iguanas. Watching the pandemic paranoia and conspiracy theories steeping across their country, Reek wrote lyrics reflecting the scene in front of him: “Purple, veiny soccer mommies,” he sings in a deep, foreboding voice on the song “Echo Palace,” “Sharpening their guillotines.” It’s a cut so infectious that it betrays the density of its lyrics, which were adapted from a poem Reek wrote about the repercussions of “shutting yourself off from everyone outside of your own ideology.”

When it came time to record the full set, the band headed to PAF Studio in Rotterdam, and then had the self-produced album subsequently mixed by Joo-Joo Ashworth at Studio 22 in Los Angeles and mastered by Dave Cooley. As the instruments swirl and trade solos on “I Just a Want House,” a funky millennial nihilist anthem, you can practically hear the growth of a group that’s been pushing itself further and further with every tour and every Belgian-stove fueled jam session.

The album is a big swing, stretching Iguana Death Cult beyond its garage rock origins and taking them to a new realm. It’s the type of project that warranted having legendary Dutch saxophonist Benjamin Herman stop by to add to the squall on tracks like “Oh No” and “Sensory Overload,” heady thrashers that morph into calculated freakouts; that warranted Reek and Opschoor knowing when screaming their guts out on tracks like “Pushermen,” and Boer and van Opstal knowing when to bring the rhythm section to a jazzy simmer on tracks like “Paper Straws.”

The end result of Echo Palace is an appropriately worldly album from a group breaking past the confines of its home country. That’s not to say that Iguana Death Cult aren’t proudly Dutch; the group takes from the trademark hard work ethic of their Rotterdam base and applies it to their approach with music. But it’s 2022, and we’re less defined by our borders than ever before. “When we play in other countries, for me that gives the same amount of pleasure — or even more — than when we play in the Netherlands,” says Opschoor.
