  • Fifth Class of the Capital Region Music Hall of Fame Announced

The newest class of the Capital Region Music Hall of Fame has been announced, with an induction ceremony to take place Monday, March 27th.

Eight individuals will be inducted into the fifth class of the Capital Region Music Hall Of Fame at Universal Preservation Hall. The group includes two members of a pioneering late 1960s and early 70s alt-country band; a nun who helped launch the careers of hundreds of music industry professionals around the globe; one of the region’s most active and best-known bluegrass musicians over the past eight decades; a woman who has promoted bluegrass music through the local airwaves for over 40 years; a legendary rock music photographer; and two guitarist virtuosos who forged careers that have generated international recognition.

“It is inspiring to think about the accomplishments of these men and women and what they represent. Weaved together, their stories represent an amassing cross-section of the American music scene. And collectively they reflect an amazing, vital music scene in the Capital Region.”

Jim Murphy, founder and producer of the Eddies Music Hall of Fame

The class will be inducted with musical performances, short videos about their careers, speeches and more in a public celebration at UPH. The evening kicks off 6 p.m. with a social gathering; the Capital Region Music Hall Of Fame induction ceremony begins 7 p.m. All inductees are represented with plaques at Universal Preservation Hall in Saratoga Springs, as well as brief videos highlighting their careers.

  • Dr. Scot Brown Releases MLK Inspired Single

To commemorate and celebrate civil rights leader and icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., music scholar and artist Dr. Scot Brown has released his new single “King of Love: MLK.”

This uplifting fusion of R&B and classic soul conveys the spirit of the civil rights movement and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s message of love and community.

A Rochester native, artist, and author, Dr. Brown is also an African American Studies professor and music historian at UCLA. Currently, a visiting scholar at Colgate University, Dr. Brown has cultivated a distinct sound using the knowledge he’s gained analyzing the nuances of Black popular music–especially Funk and R&B history. On the heels of national news highlighting where change is still needed to continue Dr. King’s mission of social justice, togetherness, and change, Dr. Brown hopes to give listeners an inspirational MLK anthem.

“For this particular song, I drew inspiration from the awe I felt after hearing Dr. King’s words as a child,” explained Dr. Brown. “I felt an uplifting power in his words through his melodic preaching style – even before I could fully understand the messages and meaning.”

King of Love features a broad list of talented artists, including vocalists Kijana Crues, Alex Parris, and Funk pioneer Fred Wesley, former leader and trombonist of James Brown’s band. In addition, Dr. Brown brings his own unique sound to honor Dr. King. Wanting to capture the sensation felt when he first heard the “I Have a Dream” and “Drum Major Instinct” speeches, Dr. Brown brought in actor and MLK performer/voice-over artist Stephon Ferguson. On the track, it is Ferguson’s voice that is heard reciting passages, written by Dr. Brown, in a preaching style, reminiscent of Dr. King’s sermonizing voice. This version of “King of Love: MLK” was produced by artist and rapper O’hene Savant, who lent his multi-instrumental virtuosity to the song. Dr. Scot Brown is the executive producer, bassist, additional keyboardist [vibraphone], and songwriter (with Kalamu ya Salaam and Jerry Rescue).

“Over the years, I’ve gained an appreciation for the symmetry between Dr. King’s voice and his messages about the transformational power of love and his philosophy of social change.”

Dr. Brown believes the Civil Rights and Black Power movements were successful, in part, because they both emphasized the power of everyday people to make major changes in society.

“‘Freedom Now’, ‘We Shall Overcome,’ and ‘Power to the People,’ are all chants that express this idea,” said Dr. Brown. “As far as my own music goes, I believe that people are responding favorably to positive and empowering messages in music. With this song, I hope that listeners feel and activate their own expressions of Dr. King’s call for agape love – love for humanity.”

King of Love: MLK can be found now on digital platforms YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music.

  • Judy Collins to Perform Acclaimed Album ‘Wildflowers’ at The Town Hall in NYC

On Saturday, February 25, pop icon Judy Collins is heading to the Town Hall to bring her signature blend of folk and pop to NYC as she performs her 1967 album, Wildflowers — to this day, her highest-charting album —  front to back with the Harlem Chamber Players.

    Judy Collins Wildflowers
Judy Collins, performing Wildflowers on February 25 at The Town Hall

Judy Collins came to NYC from the west coast at the start of the sixties. She landed in Greenwich Village, singing songs written by contemporaries such as Tom Paxton, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. With Cohen, Collins was a veritable salonnière of the Greenwich Village scene; she brought together Joni Mitchell, Randy Newman and many more, so the artists could share inspirations and audiences. Her background working with protest singers has stayed with Collins, she works with multiple social justice organizations and represents UNICEF.

While she came on the scene as an interpretive cover artist — she won the Grammy for Best Folk Recording in 1969 for her cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now — Collins soon established herself as an adept songwriter as well, starting with “Since You Asked” in 1967. This year, Collins has been nominated for a Grammy again, this time for her folk album Spellbound, her first complete album of all original, self-penned songs in her career.

At the Town Hall on February 25, fans will hear Collins’ famous rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” live, as well as other hits from that album: “Albatross,” “Since You Asked,” and “Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye.” Joining Collins is the Harlem Chamber Players, an acclaimed chamber band that works to increase access to high-caliber classical music in Harlem and the greater city. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here

  • Pedro Pascal Hosts with Musical Guest Coldplay on Saturday Night Live

On the February 4th episode of Saturday Night Live with Pedro Pascal, best known for his roles in Narcos, Game of Thrones, and The Mandalorian, hosts with 2023 Grammy nominated band Coldplay.

    Pedro Pascal and Coldplay
    Pedro Pascal and Coldplay.

The cold open is a parody of the MSNBC talk show, with Chloe Fineman as the anchor. The cold open focuses on the China balloon that was seen going over the United States. Bowen Yang plays the balloon, and talks about his experiences of being the balloon, saying he flew over Montana because he likes the show Yellowstone. They talk more about politics and racism.

    https://youtu.be/gG3kUa8uM4c

The monologue of Pedro Pascal features him talking about his experience with shooting with HBO and in Canada. He talks about his upbringing in Chile, and how he is very close with his large extended family. Pascal talked about his range as an actor, and how excited he is to be on SNL. The monologue was short however to the point, showcasing how being on the show is a big deal to him.

The first skit features a parody of Jeopardy, called Big Hollywood Show. The categories feature information about film and TV, with Pedro Pascal playing a contestant. The questions talk about new pop culture trends going on today, like the new 80 For Brady film, and other new shows. The next skit is a movie trailer featuring the characters of Mario, which recently came out in a new animated film.

Following that skit comes a new one, surrounding characters in a hospital, making fun of the L.A. accent, reminscnent of the Californians sketch on previous seasons. Pascal broke character a few times, which made it even funnier. After that skit, the Gen Z slang came out in a high school centered sketch, referencing the app TikTok and the edits made on them, and the SNL audio of previous host SZA singing. It is funny watching this as someone who is considered Gen Z and dealing with the Internet and the aftermath of COVID 19. Sarah Paulson, best known for her role in American Horror Story, makes a guest appearance.

Musical guest Coldplay has had 34 nominations and four wins for the GRAMMY awards, with nomination for Album of the Year in 2023 for their record Music of the Spheres. The first song they performed, “The Astronaut” sounded magical, with the four piece, including lead singer Chris Martin, providing energy. There was an appearance of a person dressed as a mysterious alien, which made the performance feel out of this world. As the song carried on, more and more people joined the stage with glow sticks, doing background vocals.

    https://youtu.be/64W30CcJqjA

Weekend Update with Colin Jost and Michael Che was the upcoming sketch, always featuring satirical and comedic takes on what is happening in the country and beyond. They talk about the upcoming Superbowl, and Groundhog’s Day, and how the groundhog saw his shadow. Punxsutawney Phil (Michael Longfellow) made a guest appearance with British rappers (James Austin Johnson, Devon Walker).

Coldplay performs another track from their newest album, called “Human Heart/Fix You.” It featured a number of backing vocals and Martin singing. He shouted out Pascal for hosting the great show. The sound of the record is authentic to Coldplay, and their signature sound didn’t change up much.

    https://youtu.be/wPKbuDFC1Rs

The last sketch features Pascal at a birthday celebration dinner with other SNL cast members. One of the characters was comically cutting her food shaking the whole table, causing Pescal and others to break character.

The next episode on February 25 features Woody Harrelson and musical guest Jack White.
