  • Opera Saratoga Names Mary Birnbaum Artistic and General Director

    On Feb. 9, Opera Saratoga’s board of directors named Mary Birnbaum their new general and artistic director. Birnbaum succeeds Lawrence Edelson, whose eight-year tenure concluded at the end of the 2022 season. The 10th general director in Opera Saratoga’s history, Birnbaum’s hiring comes ahead of the summer 2023 season.

    “We are incredibly excited and honored to have Mary Birnbaum join Opera Saratoga. She was selected after an extensive nationwide search, in which we interviewed many highly qualified candidates. Mary’s level of enthusiasm and love of opera are infectious and I am certain she will be an inspirational leader for the company as well as an integral part of the Saratoga Springs community,” said Board President Steve Rosenblum.

    Other than her hiring at Opera Saratoga, Birnbaum teaches acting for singers as the Dramatic Advisor to the Masters of Music and Graduate Diploma Program at Juilliard. Birnhaum will main her position at Juilliard in addition to her role at Opera Saratoga. Birnbaum has worked both internationally, from Taiwan (Otello) to Australia and Israel, and across the U.S.

    “I am thrilled to accept the position of General and Artistic Director of Opera Saratoga and look forward to collaborating with the talented staff and superior board of directors to bring exceptional music theater to Saratoga Springs and the surrounding communities,” Birnbaum said.

    Fans can meet Birnbaum this summer, during the 2023 festival season. Her introduction to the public will happen on Thursday, June 8, 2023, at the Saratoga National Golf Club.

    Opera Saratoga started under the name Lake George Opera Festival on July 5, 1962. Its first production was Die Fledermaus at the Diamond Point Theatre. The company now calls Saratoga Springs home and has put on productions for more than 25,000 people annually.

    Shortly after Birnbaum’s introduction, Opera Saratoga’s summer festival will begin Friday, June 30, and continue until Sunday, July 9. Curated by Managing Director Amanda Robie, Don Pasquale, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, and The Selfish Giant, are among the acts set to perform.   • Cayuga Chamber Orchestra Announces Chamber Series Performance

    The Cayuga Chamber Orchestra has announced the launch of its Chamber Series on Sunday, Feb.
    26, as part of their 47th season.

    The performance will include pieces by Beethoven and Brahms, a program featuring Concertmaster Christina Bouey, Principal Cellist Rosemary Elliott, violinist Anthony Bracewell and guest artist, pianist Vadim Serebryany. The program will feature Beethoven’s lush and lyrically expansive String Trio in E-flat
    and Brahms’ majestic and emotionally turbulent Piano Quartet No. 3.

    It is a privilege to be preparing the Brahms Piano Quartet for a performance with
    beloved colleagues and friends, Tina, Anthony and Vadim. The slow movement is
    a true gem. From the dark, brooding landscape of c minor Brahms transports us
    to e major and a world of serenity and beauty. As I prepare to perform this
    miraculous movement (which starts with a cello solo!) I am reminded of all that
    is good in life, even amidst the suffering of so many in the world.

    The Cayuga Chamber Orchestra’s mission lies in its professional excellence, vibrant performances, community education, and passion for transformation through music. The Orchestra is devoted to fostering artistic life in the Ithaca and Finger Lakes regions of New York State.

    The Cayuga Chamber Orchestra has a strong commitment to serving its community in a variety of ways. An annual Family Series of concerts (all free admission) was added in 2013. In 2015, the CCO received the national honor of a Yale Distinguished Music Educator Award for the comprehensive school program that reaches over 800 elementary students each year. In 2017, the CCO added a Youth Orchestra program for advanced student musicians that currently has 57 members. In 2019, the first Diversity Fellowships were established to create opportunities for college music majors from underrepresented minority communities. Through partnerships with Longview and Kendal, CCO musicians enjoy regular opportunities to perform for and interact with the senior communities in the Ithaca region.

  • Levitate Music And Arts Festival Announces 10th Anniversary Line-Up, Dates

    Levitate Music and Arts Festival’s signature summertime celebration returns this year on July 7th, 8th and 9th at the Marshfield Fairgrounds in Marshfield, MA.

    This particularly special edition marks the 10th anniversary of an event that has grown to be New England’s premier music and arts festival, as well as celebrating 20 years of the Levitate community and brand. What started as a 10th Anniversary celebration of the beloved has grown to a nationally recognized festival with tens of thousands of tickets sold each day. “It’s humbling to be hitting the 20 and 10 year milestones of Levitate Brand and Levitate Music and Arts Festival,” says Levitate Co-Founder Daniel Hassett. “We set out to provide a different kind of festival for our town, and New England, back in 2013- championing our local musicians and artists and building a community who believe wholeheartedly in making the world a more creative and connected place.     The illustrious Brandi Carlile will make her first appearance at the festival, and as an artist known for celebrating the value of community, her ethos is perfectly aligned with Levitate. Trey Anastasio, a New England stalwart and lead singer of Phish will return to the festival to perform with his solo band. After ten years of incredible growth and annual performances since the inaugural Levitate Festival in 2003, American-reggae artist Stick Figure will headline in its hometown and energize the mainstage again at this year’s festival. Other notable artists on this eclectic bill this year include Goose, Ziggy Marley, Rebelution, Peach Pit, The Heavy Heavy, Celisse and Lucius.

    Levitate was founded in 2003 as a community-focused surf and skate shop that steadily grew through local support and grassroots marketing. Over the past 20 years, these original core values of community, creativity and a connectedness to nature have been woven through all aspects of Levitate’s growth — from the development of its apparel line to their highly sought-after kids outdoors and creative summer camps; the expansion of its flagship store to an outdoor restaurant, music and events venue; the continued success of their signature festivals, Levitate Music & Arts Festival, and Levitate Flannel Jam, and most recently – the launch of the non profit Levitate Foundation 501(c)(3).

    More than 30 food trucks are welcomed to the event grounds the weekend of the festival. All are locally sourced, offering a plethora of options such as farm to table, barbeque, handmade pizza, delicious baked goods and smoothies.

    Additionally, Levitate Music & Arts Festival is a family friendly event and features many activities for kids to engage in. The kids zone operates each day of the festival and is run by Levitate Camp Counselors. Encouraging creativity and sharing their love of the outdoors with the next generation is at the core of Levitate’s mission and the largest kids program to date is planned for the festival’s 10th Anniversary.

    Levitate Music Festival’s dedication to an eco-friendly approach reached new records in 2022 with the elimination of single use plastic at all of their bars, along with the addition of wood recycling from the site build. Additionally, thanks to their dedicated green team, the team was able to exceed their marks on clean recycling and composting stats and is excited to expand that success in 2023.

  • Duran Duran Announces New Tour With CMAC Date

    Duran Duran has announced a 26-date North American arena tour for 2023, with both Bastille and Nile Rodgers & CHIC joining them as special guests across the entire run.

    “The Future Past Tour” begins on May 28 in San Jose, CA, and includes a stop at CMAC in Canandaigua on September 3, 2023.

    2022 served as something of a landmark year for Duran Duran, having just been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, a career peak that followed a summer live season of epic proportions. They headlined London’s Hyde Park in front of 60,000 people, performed at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace, and closed the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in their home town of Birmingham. They also embarked on a headline tour across North America which included sold-out shows at New York City’s Madison Square Garden and three nights at the Hollywood Bowl.

    It’s remarkable to me that as a band, we are still hitting new milestones, and introducing the sound of DD to new generations of music lovers. We are truly grateful that we get to do what we do on a daily basis, and that we still love our job as much as we did when we started out some four decades ago.

    The cinematic release of their new docu-concert film, A Hollywood High followed, before the band capped off the year with a spectacular performance in Times Square on New Year’s Eve, counting fans down into 2023 in front of a live audience of over one million people on the streets of Manhattan. All this after the huge success of the new studio album FUTURE PAST, hailed as Duran Duran at their best by critics and fans alike, four decades into their rich and storied career.

    Enlisting the help of some of the most exciting names of the last 50 years, with FUTURE PAST, Duran Duran has delivered another incredible genre-spanning piece of work that once again sets them apart from the pack. Working alongside DJ / producer Erol Alkanand pioneering Italian composer/producer Giorgio Moroder, who added his magic to create two instant future classics “Beautifullies,” and “Tonight United,” as well as some of the most unexpected and inspiring names in pop – including Swedish hitmaker, Tove Lo on “Give It All Up,” and “Queen of Drill,” as well as Ivorian Doll on “Hammerhead” and Japan’s CHAI on “More Joy!”.

    In addition, Blur’s Graham Coxon co-wrote and lends his guitar to several tracks on the record and David Bowie’s former pianist Mike Garson adds an exquisite sonic layer to album closer “Falling.” The record, which was recorded across studios in London and LA over lockdown, also features long-time collaborator Mark Ronson who co-wrote and played on “Wing,” and was mixed by Mark ‘Spike’ Stent.

  • The Moldy Peaches Announces Comeback at Brooklyn Steel

    NYC anti-folk heroes The Moldy Peaches announced their triumphant return to the live stage after 20 years at Brooklyn Steel. 

    Prior to their performance at the Brooklyn Steel, the band announced their first European show in 20 years, with a date at London’s Roundhouse and performances at Primavera Sound Barcelona.

    The Moldy Peaches was established in the mid-90s by Adam Green and Kimya Dawson in New York City. The indie band popularized “anti-folk” music that brought quirky, lo-fi punk elements into the music scene. What began as a duo soon transformed into a six-member band with members such as Brent Cole, Jack Dishel, Toby Goodshank, and Steven Mertens joining. In 2001, the band released their debut album, The Moldy Peaches on Rough Trade Records. Recognized for their sense of humor, whimsy and self-deprecation, the debut album featured gems like “Downloading Porn With Dave” and “Who’s Got The Crack.” In 2002, the group separated to work on solo projects.

    Last year, founding members Kimya Dawson and Adam Green played their first show together in 11 years. The two performed together for a premiere of the documentary Meet Me In The Bathroom, inspired by Lizzy Goodman. When asked about upcoming events the band said, “We’re excited to be back, older, and moldier. Let’s see if we still got it! Once a Moldy Peach, always a Moldy Peach.”

  • E.R.I.E. Share New Indie Single “World is on Fire” off upcoming “Suburban Mayhem” album

    Capital Region indie-rock quartet E.R.I.E. have announced their new full-length record, Suburban Mayhem, arriving April 7th. Alongside the announcement, the band has shared the evocative new single “World is On Fire.” featuring friend Sydney Worthley from their local scene.

    Vocalist/guitarist TJ Foster says, “Having Sydney lend her talents to this track was simply incredible. The embellishments she added really took the song to the next level, and we’re so honored to call her a friend. The song itself is about watching ourselves slowly destroy our planet and ruminating on how much more we all could be doing just on a small scale. But at the end of the day, it’s sadly just so much easier to change nothing and assume someone else will swoop in and fix our problems instead.” 

    E.R.I.E. consists of guitarist Matt Delgado, drummer Chad Flewwelling and bassist Levi Jennes. The band spent most of 2022 self-recording their sophomore full-length, yielding 12 nostalgia-tinged songs in the distinct style that the band affectionately describes as Tom Petty cosplaying as blink-182. The band’s sound has a “crunching guitars, catchy choruses and a down-to-earth, working-class vibe that recalls modern heartland punk rock…” (Daily Gazette).

    The lead single “Can’t Stop Runnin’’ showcases the band exploring these more Springsteen-esque elements perfectly, whereas album highlight ‘Bad Man’s World’ is a pop-rock anthem tailormade for dominating the airwaves.   

    All the while, the band has solidified themselves as one of the most reliable and entertaining live acts in the greater Albany music scene. Combined with the consistently strong Suburban Mayhem has E.R.I.E. poised to quickly become a suburban success story. 

    Sydney Worthley is a singer-songwriter at heart, pulling inspiration from Phoebe Bridgers and Taylor Swift. At the age of 17, she released “Rose Colored Glasses” amongst an unforeseen pandemic. Coming of age, long lost connections, and learning from past haunting mistakes are all themes of her 2020 project. Vito Ciccarelli, WVCR radio personality said she’s an “Amazing talent, wonderful songwriter, and an engaging young lady. Having worked with many young acts over the years, I see her achieving great things in the future.”

  • Junior Jerry Jam Combines Musical Family Fun and Community Philanthropy in WNY

    In Western New York, a group of live music fans have come together to give back to the community while fostering the development of young musicians. Junior Jerry Jam (JJJ) is a grassroots not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to inspiring young musicians and music lovers by introducing young people to professional musicians in a fun, safe and family friendly environment.

    Embodying the belief that Buffalo is truly the City of Good Neighbors, Junior Jerry Jam (JJJ) is committed to raising money and awareness to support local non-profits and other community organizations, so as to strengthen and deepen bonds throughout the greater Buffalo community.

    Founded by long-time Grateful Dead fans Stu and Judy Weinstein, Junior Jerry Jam was started in 2021 after the couple sensed a need for family friendly music events in the vibrant Buffalo music scene. Stu and Judy had shared their love of music with their five children as well as their grandchildren over the last few decades, and in the post-pandemic era, they were moved to reach more kids and families.  The Weinstein’s sought to provide live music events for young people and their parents, but also to combine the positive feeling that comes from giving back to the Buffalo community that they are so proud to be a part of. 

    I just love watching the joy in young kids’ faces when they are at live music. They don’t stop smiling and dancing. Their ability to make new friends at these events is a beautiful thing to watch. There is no judgment, only love and oneness.

    The roots of Junior Jerry Jam are of course, connected to the Grateful Dead, thanks to Judy bringing Stu to his first Dead show at Ventura County Raceway in California, many years ago. Stu has thus learned to share his appreciation of the Grateful Dead, and in the summer of 2021, having visited their grandkids in New Jersey, the couple were inspired by their son bringing his kids to a local show, which got the wheels turning.

    Stu told the Buffalo News in 2022 “I’m a very community-minded, family-oriented person and a huge lover and supporter of live music.” With that sentiment in mind, Junior Jerry Jam has created events for the whole family to enjoy, giving parents a way to pass on the love of live music with their kids in a fun , safe environment.

    Past events held by Junior Jerry Jam include their first event in December 2021, “The Kids They Dance and Shake their Bones” at Buffalo Iron Works, which led to $3,000 being donated to Buffalo String Works. In 2022, JJJ picked up pace with a Dogs in a Pile soundcheck show, dubbed “Dogs to the Rescue,” at Buffalo Ironworks, netting $1500 for the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter (view the soundcheck here). They also held events in the Kids Village at Cobblestone Live in July 2022, a moe.queous soundcheck show at Town Ballroom this past October (with $1,490 donated to American Cancer Society) and a Holiday Shakedown at Babeville in December, featuring Workingman’s Dead, leading to a $3,000 donation to Buffalo String Works

    Coming up in 2023, the first event for Junior Jerry Jam will be “Dogs to the Rescue” featuring Dogs in a Pile performing a soundcheck show at Buffalo Ironworks on March 12th at 5:30 pm. That night, the group will be raising funds for the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter.  Looking ahead to the summer, JJJ will once again host the Kids Village at Cobblestone Live in July, and have another Holiday Shakedown slated for December. More events are in the works beyond these, as Junior Jerry Jam is just getting started.

  • Cannastock 2023 Festival Comes to MJN Convention Center in Poughkeepsie this May

    Radio Woodstock 100.1 WDST has announced the return of Cannastock, the first-ever consumption-friendly cannabis festival in New York, on Saturday, May 13. This year, the event will be held at the newly renovated MJN Convention Center in Poughkeepsie.

    Cannastock is a ​21+ ​consumer-friendly festival and an immersive cannabis experience with local and national cannabis brands. At the festival, there will be like-minded consumers and large amounts of exhibitors, including licensed growers, manufacturers, and retailers, as well as games, contests, and free giveaways. There will also be educational panels on topics such as how legalization will change our society, and people can also learn about jobs within the cannabis industry.

    The festival is also featuring live music acts with DJ Max Glazer from Federation Sound and local visual performance artists. Cannastock will also feature the first Excelsior Cup, a cannabis competition to honor the best cannabis products in New York State. To be announced is entry portal information, the judging panelists, and the array of categories spanning flowers, concentrates, pre-rolls, cartridges, and edibles that will be part of the initial competition.

    The event is presented by Radio Woodstock 100.1 WDST, described as the New York Times “favorite thing about driving around the Hudson Valley,” producing curated music programming and virtual and live music events, along with advertising campaigns. The station has founded both the Mountain Jam Festival and Taste of Country Festival, both of which have grown to become the largest rock and camping music festivals in the Northeast.

    Radio Woodstock principal owner and Cannastock Founder Gary Chetkof, said “after our inaugural Cannastock sold out quickly last October, we realized that we needed to bring it back soon and in a much larger venue. With the first recreational retail dispensaries opening up to the public now, we thought the time was right to bring it to the MJN Center in May.” $30 General Admission and $65 VIP tickets are available for purchase on Friday, Feb. 17 at 10 a.m. here.

  • Phish Summer Tour includes Syracuse stop, plus 7 Nights at MSG

    Having just celebrated the start of their 40th year with a career-spanning New Years Eve performance at Madison Square Garden, Phish gave a Valentine’s Day gift to fans in the form of Summer 2023 Tour dates. The 23-date Phish tour will include stops at St. Joseph’s Lakeview Amphitheater in Syracuse, and 7 nights at MSG.

    On Sunday, July 23, Phish will make their second ever appearance at Lakeview Amphitheatre in Syracuse, located on the shore of Onondaga Lake and across the highway from the New York State Fairgrounds. Their first performance in 2016, also a Sunday show, featured the band playing a great deal of songs penned by native son, Jon Fishman.

    While not billed as a residency like the band’s 13-night Baker’s Dozen run of 2017, the Madison Square Garden shows will feature the band’s second longest stretch at the venue. By the end of the residency, they will bring their total number of shows at the World’s Most Famous Arena to 79, second only to Billy Joel.     The band’s summer 2023 will culminate with their traditional Labor Day Weekend run at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO, returning for four nights, August 31-September 3.

  • A Residency at The Capitol Theatre with Bob Weir & Wolf Bros

    Bob Weir & Wolf Bros took over The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester for a four-night residency, part of a 2023 winter tour.  Joining Bob on stage: bassist Don Was, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, drummer Jay Lane,  pedal steel guitarist Barry Sless with strings and horns supplied by The Wolfpack (Alex Kelly, Brian Switzer, Adam Theis, Mads Tolling and Sheldon Brown.)

    The four nights presented a wide variety of music. Each having its own groove.  Covers where distributted throughout the shows, including songs from Bob Dylan (When I Paint My Masterpiece, All Along the Watchtower), Johnny Cash (Big River), and The Beatles (Tomorrow Never Knows, Dear Prudence.)  

    The shows held over February 7- 11 were broken up into two night groupings with the middle night at The Capitol occupied by Long Island Medium Theresa Caputo. Whether she was booked to conjure up additional “Dead” spirits could not be confirmed. But the following Friday and Saturday shows where packed to the rafters.

    Of course, a four-night stint like this has its fair share of Weir solo, Ratdog, and Grateful Dead tunes. If the stage was not filled enough, Rick Mitarotonda and Peter Anspach of Goose as well as Kenny Brooks, Dred Scott, and Sasha Dobson joined in to close out the final night.

    The tour heads into March, including a stop in Atlanta for three nights with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
