Celebrating 20 years of her debut album, Soul Sessions, Joss Stone has embarked on a city North American tour, including a stop at the OLG Stage in Niagara Falls, Ontario on Aug. 26. Tagging along for the ride was singer/songwriter Stephen Wilson Jr.
Released in the Fall of 2013, Soul Sessions was the first studio album for Stone who was discovered at the age of 13 during a voice competition. With comparisons early on to Janis Joplin with Motown vibes, Stone had her work cut out for her and made the most of every opportunity. Soulful, bluesy, sultry, sensual, and spiritual are all perfect adjectives for any part of her music.
Prior to her soulful show, music fans were treated to some rustic sounds from Stephen Wilson Jr. Primarily a writer, Wilson has discovered that he can draw fans with his voice as well. Playing an approximately 45-minute set, he serenaded the crowd with some witty humor, 70s Bruce Springsteen-like vocals, and a guitar.
After going to school for microbiology, Wilson made the hard life choice to pursue music rather than the science field, with some inspiration from songs like “Don’t Take the Girl.” He calls himself a recovering microbiologist, and personally, I feel he made the right choice, science is overrated, anyway.
Raised by his father, they stayed close until his passing a few years ago. One of his last words to the younger Wilson was “write a good song for me.” For his father, the song “Father’s Son” was written. It is a very profound melancholy-filled song, sure to resonate with many who give it a listen.

Many songs from his forthcoming album carry loosely based storylines from his life, including “Holler From the Holler” and “For What It’s Worth.” Keep an ear open for the new music in the next month.
With Stephen Wilson cleared from the stage, the anticipation of a night of soulful blues music was growing. With nine albums to her credit and a number of notable renditions she has performed over the years, the set list for Joss is hard to imagine. For this night, fans were treated to a medley of two songs, followed by two songs from her debut, “Super Duper Love” and “Fell in Love With a Boy.”
As she continued on, Joss shared a little bit of information from each album. Mind, Body, and Soul was all about her and her life choices. Introducing Joss Stone, which she sometimes refers to as her debut, is where she got to work with Raphael Saadiq and Laurn Hill, a dream come true for her. Color Me Free is titled based on where she was in her life, wanting her freedom space.
A storyteller as much as a vocalist, Stone seemed to float across the stage barefoot as always, as she performed and replayed her memories for her fans. Memories of previous tours, memories from trips to Botswana, and memories of working with notable talents as she blossomed into the star she is today. One story of note is from Botswana, where she was asked to write a song to bring the rain. While on a trip there, she was told that there had not been rain for nearly nine months, a true drought for sure. As requested, she wrote the song, aptly titled “Rain Song” and when she went back to Botswana to play it the rain poured down. A very spiritual person, Joss was left amazed at this marvel.
While she is known for her bluesy, jazzy styles, Joss is very capable of any genre, as she displayed during a three-song reggae set, including parts of a song that her father used to sing to her. While she is no Marley or Jimmy Cliff, her ability to put her own style on something like Island music is something that sets her apart. With an innocent giggle at the end of the set, as the stage goes dark, it’s clear that Joss was having quite a good time.
With the show winding down, fans were hit with a confetti canon as she sang about the power of music and spoke about how music brings people together, creates love, and inversely can divide people. Soulful, spiritual, and cheerful, Stone graciously thanked everyone for coming out tonight.
When artists hit the stage to perform, they often have a set routine and follow it pretty closely. I am sure that Joss Stone is no different, but the way she delivers it all is second to none. Joking with the crowd, giggling all night, dancing around the stage in any of the 3 outfits she donned, and presenting fresh sunflowers to random fans all speaks volumes to the level of fun she has. A real class act that Fallsview Casino Resort should be bragging about.

Downtown Albany will host Pearlpalooza on Saturday, September 16, 2023 on North Pearl Street, with a day full of music, yoga, vending from local businesses and much more in store.
The free, all-ages music festival, returns for its 14th year, presented by Remarkable Liquids, and co-hosted by WEQX, The Downtown Albany Business Improvement District, and Sugar Productions, running from 11am to 7pm.

Starting off the day will be MVP Health Care Presents YogaPalooza 2023, a street-wide mass yoga gathering event, beginning at 11am. A team of instructors from The Hot Yoga Spot will instruct and assist this free 60-minute yoga class that is perfect for all levels.
Music begins at 12pm with Sly Fox & The Hustlers, followed by The Rob Beaulieu Band at 130pm, B Chaps at 3pm, ALEXSUCKS at 4pm, and headliner Fishbone at 6pm.
Surrounding the music will be the shops and businesses of North Pearl Street, as well as high-quality local vendors, fine dining, retail, and entertainment establishments.

Grammy-award-winning singer Lauryn Hill will be back on the road this Fall celebrating the 25th anniversary of her 1998 album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. She reunites with her former group the Fugees to go on tour from September 8 through November 9, with two appearances in New York.
The 25th anniversary tour marks the first time Hill has performed on tour since 2020, as the R&B/rap superstar will dive into her discography to bring some of her best songs to the concert stage.
Since The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’s release, the project has accumulated numerous accolades, going RIAA certified Diamond, the first album by a female rapper to go number one on Billboard, and five Grammys stemming from her work.
Her reunion with the Fugees, composed of Wyclef Jean and Pras, will serve as co-headliners throughout the U.S. and Canadian shows. Additionally, reggae star Koffee opens for the Australian leg of the tour on October 3 and 5.

The Soul Rebels are set to perform for four nights at the Blue Note Jazz Club from Sept. 21 through Sept. 24. The group will also be accompanied by a slew of special guests including Rakim & Big Daddy Kane. Comedian Tony Woods, New York icon Ja Rule, and rapper G-Eazy are all scheduled to host a different night.
A product of New Orleans’ rich musical history, The Soul Rebels is an eight-piece brass ensemble. The band has long been admired for its ability to fuse together elements of jazz, soul, hip-hop, pop, and rock. An artistic Swiss Army knife, The Soul Rebels have performed with the likes of Nas, Rakim, Katy Perry, Portugal. The Man, and even Metallica.
The eight-member collective has appeared on multiple major releases including G-Eazy’s “When You’re Gone” ft. Lil Wayne and Dave East and Nas’ “Godfather 4.” The ensemble’s 2019 album Poetry in Motion impressed listeners and spawned appearances on The Late Show and NPR’s Tiny Desk.
Performing a Blue Note Jazz Club residency is the holy grail of artistic experiences for our band. This opportunity brings together our favorite artists including our long-time friends and collaborators Rakim and G-Eazy and marks our debut performances with Big Daddy Kane and Ja Rule. This Blue Note engagement is truly monumental within our career and in culture. We are going big this year for the 50th anniversary of hip hop.

The Blue Note Jazz Club continues to attract artists from a multitude of musical backgrounds. A Manhattan staple, the institution has been up and running since 1981. The Soul Rebels will be joined onstage by an all-star cast of jazz musicians. Louis Cato, Ray Angry, Elena Pinderhughes, and James Carter are all scheduled to be part of the band’s four-night run of performances.

There is perhaps nothing more synonymous with hip-hop than New York City. The genre was birthed, nourished, and has continuously evolved thanks to the five boroughs. From hip-hop’s Jamaican influence to its eventual inception on the streets of the Bronx, NYC has helped to propel hip-hop into the mainstream giant that it is today.
New York City has produced an endless list of iconic and influential hip-hop figures, from the all important Grandmaster Flash, to The Notorious B.I.G, and even to groups like Wu-Tang. The city has been a hotbed for rappers and hip-hop artists throughout much of the genre’s history. Acts like Nas, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, and Nicki Minaj have not just become rap superstars, but have elevated to some of the biggest names in all of music.

NYC DOMINANCE
Part of the aura and mythos surrounding New York is not just the artists that are associated with the region, but also the way that the city itself has influenced the music. Having originated in the Big Apple, hip-hop was inherently New York. From its embryonic stages in the ’70s to its “gangsta” personality in the ’90s, the genre’s identity has been linked to NYC for much of its lifespan.
For close to 30 years the “sound” of hip-hop was the “sound” of New York. Characterized by confident flows, lyrical versatility, classic samples, and an atmosphere of authenticity, “East Coast Rap” was the ultimate standard.
Historically, hip-hop acts from the city have dominated, whether it be commercially or critically. Seven of the top 25 highest selling hip-hop albums belong to New York artists, a mark higher than any other city . Additionally, of the twelve rappers/hip-hop artists currently in, or scheduled to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, seven come from NYC, with two more representing Long Island.

The popularity and success of hip-hop in NYC led to the genre’s diaspora throughout much of the United States. By the mid to late ’90s Los Angeles, Chicago, and Atlanta were all major players in the scene. Artists like Tupac, Snoop Dogg, Outkast, Lil Wayne, Common, etc. all had tremendous success being outside of NYC, however up until the last 10-15 years it was still the Empire City that really moved the needle.
A CRUMBLING EMPIRE
Despite NYC’s hip-hop pedigree, the “East Coast” sound that made it so influential has become quieter and quieter in recent years. Instead, influences of trap, drill, cloud rap, and even reggaeton have filtered into the city to create a diverse, intricate, and hard to pin down sound from many NYC artists. Even with the likes of rappers like Joey Badass, Fabolous, and Roc Marciano, the often grimy, word play heavy, and sample laden sounds of the ’80s through early 2000s East Coast rap has largely dissipated from the city.
As NYC has lost its sound, other cities have refined theirs. Today, avid hip-hop fans will easily be able to identify where certain artists are from within seconds of hitting the play button. Acts like 21 Savage, Lil Baby, and Migos all have a distinct sound and atmosphere that connects them with Atlanta. Other artists like GloRilla, Moneybagg Yo, Key Glock, and the late Young Dolph boast specific features and elements that represent Memphis.
On Complex’s 2023 list of “The Best Rap Cities Right Now”, NYC sat at #2, yet there was no city with more of a musical or even social disconnect between its most prominent artists. In terms of musicality, and apart from maybe an accent, there is very little that artists like Ice Spice, A$AP Rocky, Fivio Foreign, and Nicki Minaj have in common.

“As a whole town we’re losing… I’m talking about the new New York, who do they have to look up to? We’re losing identity and it’s crazy because we was the treadsetters,” Queens legend N.O.R.E. said in a 2013 interview with DJ Vlad.
Not only has there become a stylistic schism in NYC but there has been a long standing adversarial attitude amongst many of its biggest artists. Of course there’s the well publicized beef between Jay-Z and Nas, then there’s 50 Cent taking on all of NYC, and in the 2010s it was Nicki Minaj and Cardi B. While other places were fostering and supporting new sounds, promoting upcoming artists, and building together, many New Yorkers were divided.
“The older rappers that were already situated in the city didn’t pay up-and-comers no mind if they didn’t sound like the old sound. Bobby Shmurda was the first one with a newer sound, a different sound, that was accepted by New York City hip-hop culture,” Jamel Robinson, the host of Brooklyn rap Youtube Channel Melz TV said in an interview with Complex.
The mention of Shmurda’s name also shines a light on another troubling aspect of NYC’s identity crisis. Controversy and tragedy have plagued the city’s biggest and brightest stars. Shmurda burst onto the national stage after the release of his mega-hit “Hot N*gga” in 2014. Proudly repping NYC, the then 19-year-old became an internet star, spawning viral trends and memes all around social media. Just two years later however, Shmurda would be sentenced to seven years in prison after facing conspiracy and weapons charges. The rapper helped to pave the way toward a renewed New York sound and image, but his untimely removal from the game left NYC without another trailblazer for years.

Unfortunately, the artist that would garner the same kind of attention as Bobby would also have a short run at the top. Fellow Brooklyn rapper Pop Smoke took hip-hop by storm in 2019. Blending Chicago and UK Drill with a distinctly New York attitude, the artist was hailed as one of the next Brooklyn legends. But, while renting a house in LA in February of 2020, Pop Smoke was tragically shot and killed during a botched home robbery. Once again the city was left without an artistic talisman.
Warning signs of NYC’s eventual fall from hip-hop have been there for years. Even New York’s own have referenced the influence of other locations and subgenres. In A$AP Rocky’s 2011 song “Palace”, he sings “Harlem N*ggas gon’ be feelin’ this, East Coast n*gga but how trill is this?” alluding to the Houston slang term “trill”. Rocky goes onto praise the Texas city later in the track rapping “Influenced by Houston hear it in my music, a trill n*gga to the truest, show you how to do this”.
The Harlem’ native’s love for Southern sounds helps to demonstrate the way in which New York artists have grown to accept and incorporate other attributes of hip-hop. While New York’s current sound may represent the diversity within music and the area’s population as a whole, it diverges from the hip-hop legacy that was crafted there. Without identifiable qualities and features, it makes it hard to discern a “New York City” artist from any other act.
Perhaps New York’s current lack of identity is due to the natural evolution of genres, especially in a place that has such deep roots in one specific kind of music. It may be the normal progression of any artistic originator to eventually move on from the elements and features that made it so special to begin with.
Whether it be because of a natural artistic change, tension between artists, or even just “bad luck”, New York City’s reputation in hip-hop has faded over the last 10-15 years.

UPSTATE IS THE NEW “EAST COAST”
But, as the longstanding “East Coast” sound has begun to leave the blocks of New York City, a refurbished sound has traveled upstate, seeping into cities like Albany, Rochester, Syracuse, and most notably Buffalo. These cities have partially curated their own subgenre of hip-hop, characterized by many of the same ideas, trends, and themes that helped to establish NYC as a mecca.
The most notable of these artists hail from Buffalo and are a part of the “Griselda” collective. Spearheaded by Benny the Butcher, Conway the Machine, and Westside Gunn, the three have helped to carry the torch for the “new wave” of hip-hop coming out of Upstate New York.
While they all certainly have their own individual characteristics, like Westside’s unique flow or Benny’s confident delivery, their music all shares similar themes and perhaps most apparent, a certain atmosphere. Defined by lyrics about drug dealing, street smarts, high fashion and systematic failures, their content is the musical offspring of acts like Wu-Tang, Mobb Deep, Onyx, and even early Jay-Z.
“I just do me and if you like it, you like it, if you don’t, you don’t… me being a real individual, people love that. It’s enough to build a cult following. It’s not a gimmick, this is just what we do for real, ” Westside Gunn said in an interview with Complex.

Conway’s authenticity and edge mirrors much of the sentiment that ’90s and traditional East Coast rappers were known for. The success of Griselda has helped to provide sustenance for a section of hip-hop fans who have been starving for a more gritty and dark sound.

It’s not just the lyrics and attitude of Griselda that calls back to the boom-bap era of East Coast rap, it’s also their production. For years the trio has enlisted the help of the producer Daringer, who has seemingly managed to hold onto all the unused samples, sounds, and techniques that legends like DJ Premier and RZA would’ve craved for.
In an era where hip-hop production is full of cheap snares, 808s, synths, overdone bass, and half-baked samples, Griselda and Daringer combine to create beautifully violent, vivid and foreboding records. Even lacking drums at times, their tracks provide a listening experience unlike anything in contemporary hip-hop.
Streaming apps like Spotify and Apple Music can easily expose lovers of Griselda to other similar artists. And after some quick research it’s clear to see that a lot of these “similar artists” come from Upstate New York.
Whether it’s Syracuse’s Stove God Cooks, Rochester’s 38 Spesh, or the plethora of other Buffalo artists, there is a blossoming of rap talent in Upstate New York. While this vibrant and nostalgic subgenre has been making waves in and amongst hip-hop heads for years, it has yet to make a big splash in the mainstream.
“It’s more about being creative, making dope music, and just solidifying my name. I don’t give a fuck about none of the other shit,” Stove Good Cooks told Peter Rosenberg in a conversation with Hot 97.
Despite the individual success of some artists in the subgenre, there has yet to be a track or album that has crossed over into popular music. Benny The Butcher gained notoriety for having J.Cole on “Johnny P’s Caddy” while Conway and Westside appeared on Ye’s Donda. With that being said there is still a disconnect between mainstream hip-hop lyricists like Cole, Kendrick, Cordae, JID and many acts from the grimier subgenre.

Although widespread commercial success has evaded the subgenre as a whole, the influence and inspiration that it has supplied cannot be ignored. Back in 2021 Tyler, The Creator credited Westside Gunn for “making me want to rap again”. Additionally, legendary comedian Dave Chappelle has gone on stage to shout out Griselda.
Thanks to the ground covered by some of the larger acts in the subgenre, rappers like Rome Streetz, Che Noir, Mach-Hommy, plus producers like Conductor Williams have all been able to shine. Even without large-scale commercial backing, the subgenre has provided some of the most talented and innovative artists in contemporary hip-hop.
As hip-hop celebrates its 50th anniversary, the genre has never been more accessible, popular, or accepted. While the future trends and sounds that will define New York hip-hop are unknown, it seems all but certain that artists outside of the traditional NYC metro will have an impact. Amongst a flurry of sonic changes and social media fads, there’s something refreshingly nostalgic about the style of hip-hop emanating from Upstate. Although NYC has relinquished its throne as the genre’s king, the state of New York is still an important thread in hip-hop’s cultural and musical web.
The night’s theme was R&B, and DJ TGIF brought them rhythm with him. Opening the show with some of the best R&b from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s, there was not a body that wasn’t grooving to the beat. As a local favorite, he vibed with the crowd well for his two hour set. There were plenty of free t-shirts given out after his set by Alive at 5 volunteers and Overit Studios.
The summer series was closed out with the highly anticipated Montell Jordan. Locals came in a bit anxious from the previous week as Rakim had cancelled an hour before his set. Montell Jordan did show up and show out for the large Albany crowd.
Montell’s set was the shortest of the season at 45 minutes, about half of all the other main acts this series. His set had a lot of ups and downs as he cut many of his hits short. Montell said that since he had recently become a pastor, he could not sing any more of his songs that were more sexual in nature. He commonly started a track and cut it off after about 30 seconds, leaving some of his adoring fans with a look of dissatisfaction.
To fill the void of those unsung songs, he performed a lot of covers. Showing love to the East Coast, he covered Notorious B.I.G.’s “Hypnotize.” He also represented his West Coast Roots with a spin of “California Love.”
The show ended on a high with him singing his most well known hit “This is How We Do It.” The crowd couldn’t get enough of him. He had already performed different versions of the song to open his set, and they were finally left with it played the whole way through. He stayed behind after the show to sign autographs for fans.
Sohil, a singer/songwriter, guitarist, and producer, released his new single, “Movie Star.” Accompanied by a music video shot in New York City, the song is a love letter to Manhattan and New York City as a whole. It blends futuristic sounds, horns, Sohil’s vocals, and self-aware lyrics to paint a true picture of the Big Apple.
Sohil began releasing music to streaming platforms in 2018. Since then, he has released numerous singles and an EP consisting of acoustic versions of several of his songs.
“My songs all give off a feeling of longing and hopefulness,” Sohil previously said in an interview. “I love lyrics that tell a story and paint a picture for the listener so they feel like they are sitting next to me on my couch while I tell them about a moment in my life.”
Sohil’s music combines a blend of sounds all across the map, including hip-hop, electronic, and soul. “Movie Star” in particular combines UK drum & bass inspirations with pop belting and a little saxophone thrown in for good measure.
The music video also acts as a companion art piece to the song. In the video, Sohil sings each line in a different part of the city and truly captures what it feels like to be in New York.
On Sunday, July 30 at The Brooklyn Boardwalk, The Day Party and Empire Club NYC presented some of the most iconic names in hip-hop and R&B, with the lineup including Ashanti, Jadakiss and the Lox, and Tina (Hoodcelebrityy). Music was provided by Funk Flex and Nick Scalici, along with special guests. The event featured an afternoon and evening filled with pop-ups, food vendors, and other installations.
All originating from New York, Ashanti originally from Glen Cove and Jadakiss and The Lox representing Yonkers, all played in their home state and city within Coney Island at the Brooklyn Boardwalk.
Concertgoers enjoyed the music from five different DJs, few local artists, Tina (Hoodcelebrityy), Jadakiss and The Lox followed by the grand finale, Ashanti. Tina (Hoodcelebrityy) is a Jamaican born dancehall singer and songwriter, who moved the Bronx at a young age.
The Lox, including Jadakiss, Sheek Louch and Styles P is an hip hop group formed in 1994 in Yonkers, NY. They were under a few labels until finally they launched their own label, D-Block.

With lots of Empire Club vendors, everyone enjoyed themselves as Funk Flex DJ’d and had everyone dancing. Nems, a New York based rapper, opened the evening with a few of his songs, which was then followed by a long DJ set of dance music and partying. Hookahs and joints filled the air with smoke and laughter, as everyone was grooving and dancing to the beat.
As the sun slowly went down, the the main three acts followed as the crowd continued to keep the energy and applause.
The Day Party and Empire Club NYC hosted some of New York’s biggest artists and performers at The Brooklyn Boardwalk. The stacked lineup brought people from all boroughs filled with pride and joy for some of the biggest names in R&B and Hip Hop.
Funk and soul group The Motet announce their 2023 Fall tour, a 28-city journey, with three stops in New York, introducing the band’s new lead singer Sarah Clarke to fans and audiences nationwide.
With the tour spanning from Sept. 9 through Dec. 3, the Denver-based ensemble is excited to bring Clarke along with the rest of the crew: Dave Watts, Joey Porter, Garrett Sayers, Ryan Jalbert, and Drew Sayers.
Clarke is a vocalist and songwriter from Portland, Oregon, known for her powerful voice and widespread range of recognition through her talent and performances. Having toured in the past with bands such as Dirty Revival and San Francisco-based soul psych-rock band Con Brio, Clarke brings immense experience and ability to the veteran group.
As for The Motet, the band formed over two decades ago, blending funk, rock, soul, and jazz into their extensive discography.
Coming off the release of their tenth studio album All Day in January, the band continues to find new, innovative ways to expand their music horizon. Additionally, The Motet believes the upcoming tour and the incorporation of Clarke into the group will make for more excitement.

Performing six headlining slots at Red Rocks, sets at festivals such as Bonnaroo, Bottlerock, Electric Forest, and countless sell-out shows, the group ensures that their upcoming Fall tour will be yet another amazing experience for fans and the ensemble.

Shows in New York will be bold, as The Motet will perform at the Fire Lights Festival in Sherman, NY Sept. 8-10, Oct. 8 in Albany, and Oct. 12 in Pawling.
The Sept. 9 and Sept. 16 shows will be a part of the Fall tour while also being included in their respective festival schedules.

August in Central New York is lauded by many in the area as “State Fair Season.” While the New York State Fair once again boasts an impressive musical lineup, there are plenty of other great performances to take in this month leading up to the fair.

David Wax Museum – Aug. 3 at 443 Social Club and Lounge
Described as “Mexo-Americana”, and known for blending folk and roots rock styles, the husband and wife duo bring their dynamic sounds to the 443 Social Club and Lounge on Aug. 3. The duo features David Wax (vocals, jarana) and Sue Slezak (fiddle, vocals, quijada). The band broke through in 2010 after a set at the infamous Newport Folk Fest and they have been turning heads ever since. They are currently touring in support of 2023’s release You Must Change Your Life. As an added bonus, the show takes place at the delightfully intimate 443 Social Club and Lounge, Syracuse’s favorite listening room.

Cooper Greer – August 4 at Tin Rooster, Turning Stone Casino
Sweet country music sounds will echo throughout the Exit 33 music complex at Turning Stone Casino on Aug. 4, as rising country star Cooper Greer performs at the Tin Rooster. The North Carolina native has drawn comparisons to Johnny Cash, Dirks Bentley, and Chris Young. The band is currently embarking on a cross-country tour, which will also feature a stop at Binghamton’s famous Spiedie Fest on Aug. 5.

Frank White Experience – August 11 at Westcott Theater
Regarded as the genre leader in hip-hop tribute bands, The Frank White Experience come to the Westcott Theater on Aug. 11. Drawing comparisons to other highly regarded tribute acts such as The Dark Star Orchestra and Badfish, the Syracuse band pays hip-hop tribute like no other, with complete live instrumentation. The set will deliver listeners a top-end tribute to 90s hip-hop pioneers such as Notorious B.I.G., 2Pac, as well as many others. The bill also features a slew of other Syracuse talent, including Seth Marcel, Jus One, DJ Tes One, and Ivan the Great.

The SteelDrivers – August 17 at Center for the Arts of Homer
Nashville-based bluegrass favorites The SteelDrivers return to Central New York for a performance at the Center for the Arts of Homer on Aug. 17. Once fronted by country music sensation, Chris Stapleton, the band has released an impressive musical catalog with 2015’s release The Muscle Shoals Collection earning the band the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album.
Danielle Ponder – August 30 at Chevy Court Stage, NYS Fair
Rochester native and rising R&B star Danielle Ponder brings her soulful sounds to the New York State Fair for a free show on Wednesday, Aug. 30. Ponder, long known for her years as a social activist and for her work in the Rochester public defender’s office, has been turning heads musically since 2018 when she decided to devote herself full time to music. She is presently touring behind her latest release, Some of Us Are Brave, which was described by NPR as being “anthemic while compassionate; soulful, while bold and strong.” Ponder continues her ascent to stardom, having recently performed at the 2023 Newport Folk Festival, where she turned many heads. You won’t want to miss this one.
