  • DMVU and Toadface Unite for a Dangerous Night in Buffalo

EDM artist DMVU and Toadface have teamed up to bring an innovative tour that had a special appearance at Buffalo Iron Works on December 16. The two producers performed all night at Buffalo Ironworks on the It’s Dangerous To Go Alone tour that included a surprise guest appearance for fans.

Local talent LURK3R and Thromb started off the night with their infused dubstep. They brought downtempo bass music to Ironworks while still supplying the audience with heavy mixes.

Toadface later took on the stage and immediately hit fans with his swampy bass lines. He performed various songs off of his EPs including “Seratonin Machinegun” and “Stone Monkey.” His growth over the past few years has allowed him to develop more into his sound.

Toadface messes with ambient mystical soundscapes that makes his production style unique. His fun toad visuals play into this as well giving a sense of funk into traditional dubstep. His ability to fuse in elements of trap music make these amphibious grooves have their own twist.

After, Denver based artist DMVU hit the stage and elevated even more on blending rap with dubstep. His love for hip-hop and rap shows through his innovative mixes. DMVU’s intro was full of lo-fi tunes and heavy sax, the vibes brought effortlessly to the crowd.

DMVU then began mixing his love of both old school and new school rap. There is something about hearing your favorite rappers over a chill bass beat that does something for the soul. He also mixed in some of his well-known songs into his set such as “Killa Sound.”

    It’s Dangerous To Go Alone

The late night set is where these DJs really took it to the next level by performing together. In honor of their joint EP It’s Dangerous To Go Alone, both DMVU and Toadface joined on stage for an epic set. They played countless songs including, “Uncut Diamonds,” and “Jungle Dub.”

Their separate sounds are unique enough but when they come together it provides groovy dubs that are addicting to listen to. They somehow raised the bar even further when they brought out special guest Distinct Motive who had the crowd cheering with excitement when he played his hit “Shake Junt.” The rest of the night consisted of the DJs switching off and on from the decks.

This night at Ironworks was one for the books. And more EDM nights are to come with Churma going to Luna Lounge December 29 and Rusko will be performing a NYE show at Town Ballroom. Get your tickets here.

  • Mersiv Breaks Outside Conventional Boundaries in Buffalo

Dubstep DJ Mersiv stopped in Buffalo on Dec. 9 for the final stretch on his latest tour. The Town Ballroom was ready for their reunion with Mersiv since his last appearance there one year ago, and he did not disappoint.

The openers were stacked with heavy bass and passion. Local artist Daggz kicked off the night with his experimental bass and was followed up by Heyz. Australian artist SIPPY had the crowd wooed with her heavy-hitting beats.

Mersiv finally took over the stage with a prompt that read, “Outside the Prescribed or Conventional Boundaries or Limits. Enjoy Your Journey Fellow Travelers.” And just like that the young producer took his audience on a journey through finding presence in sound, so much so that even the bass blew out the speakers for five minutes.

He performed many tracks off of his 2023 album Out of Bounds including “I Like It When You Move” and “Top Floor.” He brings a meditative force through his live show. His use of fun visuals and insane energy make the positive atmosphere super contagious.

The Mersiv Sound Project is the brainchild of Anderson Benoit Gallegos who has sought to spread healing energy through his sound, and fans would argue he does just that. His dark and loud sound pays homage to the duality of life. Both the highs and lows of what makes every human…human. It’s through these struggles that Gallegos shares we can rise from but never as ways to define us.

The growing artist brings a particular energy into EDM through mysterious psychedelia. Mersiv played fun mixes throughout his set and performed his popular song with Wreckno, “Bounce.” Nothing quite brought the heat though until he played “Beautiful & Filthy.” The fans were seen head-banging throughout Buffalo’s Town Ballroom.

The electronic project Manic Focus followed with a live band. This multidimensional artist has a rowdy style that also spans across numerous genres. The band he brought out on stage in Buffalo isn’t always with him so locals were in for a treat that mixed heavy bass with soulful blues. The Denver-based producer used a Numark Orbit on stage which is a wireless midi controller mapped to various one-shot effects. It was entertaining to watch this artist utilize all his various musical partners and tools to build a new-era hip-hop vibe.

Finally, anticipating fans got the performance they’ve been waiting for as BOOGIE T.RIO took to the stage. This three man group consists of Brock Thornton (guitar/vocals), Andriu Yanovski (keys), and Frank Castro (drums). The band didn’t always use to be the dynamic trio it is now. Brock began in the music scene behind the decks producing heavy beats and funky wubz. He has gained significant popularity in the bass music world and has performed countless festivals under his DJ name Boogie T.

    Boogie T to BOOGIE T.RIO

As Brock has built a huge fandom for his dubstep music, it still has always been a dream of his to tour with live musicians. And with the success that Boogie T has brung calls upon the next phase in his evolution: BOOGIE T.RIO. This group is more than your average jam band and their performance in Buffalo proved just that.

The boys played numerous hits off of their EP’s including “Get What You Give” and “Disco Moses.” They allow for old jam roots to carry the grooves through their tunes and mix it with new school funk. The guitar shredding solos and organic keytar melodies constantly left everyone impressed.

Longtime Boogie T Fans enjoyed his performances of “Dear Weedman” which brought layered instrumentals to a heavy song. This part of the night Brock invited everyone to smoke up and get jiggy with it. Couldn’t think of a more perfect way to end the night than the trio playing “Flava.” They kept the heavy electronic beats and mashed them with guitar riffs that had the crowd in awe.

Rochester doesn’t have a ton of popular gay spaces so this night served as a reminder to locals of the positive environment they can create. The LGBTQ+ vibes were overflowing from the outfits, to the flow arts, and obviously the upbeat dancing.

Even the openers were representative of the queer community and all its love. Rochester’s local DJ Brian Buttlett kicked off this night and was followed by the producer Eyezic. Then Baby Weight took the stage with their house music tunes steeped in emotional integrity.

Later on Wreckno finally took over the stage with an undeniable presence and ability to bring energy into a crowd almost instantaneously. Dressed in their cheerleader uniform and use of heavy bass, the riveting producer had their fans raging.

Wreckno has popped off just in this last year or so due to their effortlessly catchy songs. Their production skills is without a doubt top tier considering the amount of singles that have charted. Which of course made them obvious songs that fans had to hear live. Some of which includes, “Baseline,” “Medusa,” and “Bounce.”

Wreckno adds another signifier in their music that makes them stand out from the rest which is their rapping. They create fun, sexy, and confident lyrics that make them perfect songs for a love filled room of LGBTQ+ people who just want to have a good time. And that is exactly what happened inside Photo City.

Aside from their own singles, Wreckno also creates countless remixes to popular songs. One of which they performed was a remix from Kim Petras and Alex Chapman’s song “Horsey.” However, nothing got the crowd more hyped up until Wreckno teased some unreleased material with the producer Of the Trees.

That night in Rochesher was a must see for anyone and everyone. The inclusivity, high energy, and overall positive vibes is often hard to find in the concert space these days. Although, Wreckno is one who has always been about changing the scene and leaving it better than you found it.
