Copeland was also the 2021 Blues Music Award for B.B. King Entertainer Of The Year.
Two Decades Of Talent
Shemekia Copeland is is considered the blues/soul voice of her generation. As a contemporary Black woman, she brings her immense talent and charisma to topical new originals that reflect her deep social conscience. She delivers her hard-hitting musical truths through her eyes, those of a young American Black woman, a mother, and a wife. But she likes to have fun too, and her music reflects that.
“This album was made by all sides of me — happy, sad, silly, irate — they’re all a part who I am and who we all are. I’m not political. I’m just talking about what’s happening in this country” Says Copeland.

The Ed Sullivan Show archives have shared previously unreleased Louis Armstrong performances, with the first premiering tonight, January 22.
It is believed that Ed Sullivan himself lent these clips to Louis Armstrong and Universal Music Enterprises, because the two were friends, having been born in the same year in 1901. These new clips of Armstrong are able to be brought up now after decades of being lost. The first clip, premiering Jan. 22, shows Armstrong at his best, with him and opera star Robert Merrill performing a Medley (“Vesti la giubba” and “Honeysuckle Rose”) on the episode that aired on April 17, 1955.
Armstrong spent a lot of his life living in Queens, permanently settling there in 1943, despite being from New Orleans. By the 1950s, Armstrong, commonly known as “Satchmo” was widely known, and was entered into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1952. He starred as himself in the 1954 Biopic The Glenn Miller Story and that same year also released his second autobiography, Satchmo: My Life in New Orleans. 1964 proved to be an important year for Armstrong as his record Hello, Dolly! remained on the Hot 100 for 22 weeks, dislodging a few Beatles songs. He died in 1971 of a heart attack.
Armstrong went on the Ed Sullivan Show a few times in his life, and some new clips are being released now that have never been seen before. The Ed Sullivan show is the most popular primetime variety show in American history, hosting a number of talent including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley and Motown artists. The first clip being released shows Armstrong and opera star Robert Merrill perfmroign “Vesti la giubba” and “Honeysuckle Rose” on the episode that aired on April 17, 1955.
Another new clip that was originally broadcast on CBS Network on May 15, 1955, features Armstrong alongside Gary Crosby delivering a performance of “Struttin With Some Barbecue,” will be released soon. The rare clip is available now to watch on YouTube.
Blue Note Jazz Club have announced a set of February shows featuring a quartet of hip hop legends. The historic music lounge will see Talib Kweli headline alongside oft-sampled jazz visionary Bob James from February 7-9. Kicking off the 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop celebrations, the performances will feature special guests in the form of hip hop pioneers Rakim, DMC and Slick Rick, who will receive a Lifetime Achieve Award from The Recording Academy next month.
Talib Kweli is set to headline Blue Note Jazz Club on three consecutive nights.
The re-joining of forces at Blue Note between icon Bob James and Talib Kweli with legends Rakim, Slick Rick and DMC is an exceptional moment,” said Blue Note Director of Programming Alex Kurland.
Moreover, Kweli and James first joined forces last year at the storied Greenwich Village club. Alongside special guest Slick Rick, the trio performed a medley of popular records with jazz interpolations to an engaging crowd.
This time around, the Blue Note audience will receive another historic performance in a landmark year for the genre. Blue Note Jazz Club has hosted legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, George Clinton, and Talib Kweli’s own Black Star groupmate, Yasiin Bey. The line of prestigious performers continues when these legendary acts grace the stage.
The God MC – Rakim is set to appear at Blue Note Jazz Club
Brooklyn-based MC Talib Kweli stands as one of the world’s most talented and most accomplished Hip Hop artists. Whether working with Yasiin Bey as one-half of Black Star, or releasing landmark solo material or collaborating with Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Just Blaze, J Dilla, Hi-Tek, or Madlib, Kweli has established his place in the hip hop lore. Slick Rick, Rakim, and DMC are three of the most influential rhymers of all-time. Slick Rick for his inventiveness and creativity with his story-telling, Rakim for raising the bar in lyrical proficiency and DMC as one third of one of hip hop’s most culturally significant groups in Run DMC.
Talib Kweli, Bob James and Slick Rick will once again grace the Blue Note Jazz Club stage.
About Bob James
18-time Grammy nominee Bob James has also cemented his place in the realm of hip hop. His 1974 album One, specifically the groove-heavy closing track “Nautilus,” featuring James on keyboard, Gary King on bass, and Idris Muhammad on drums, is one of the most sampled and interpolated songs of all time. In 1988, elements of the song found their way into Run DMC’s “Beats To The Rhyme” and Eric B & Rakim’s “Follow The Leader.” Slick Rick then famously used “Nautilus” as the backbone to his groundbreaking single “Children’s Story.” Dozens more hip hop acts have interpolated parts of “Nautilus” leaving Bob James amongst friends on the Blue Note stage.
Bob James’ depth of history and contribution to hip hop and musical culture is remarkable. Our inspiration with these shows is to revisit that history and vibe through the samples originating from Bob James, in collaboration with three of the most prolific, powerhouse and pioneering MCs of all time who have a legendary connection of drawing from Bob’s music.
– Alex Kurland

The Helen Sung Quartet will perform as part of the Lost Jazz Shrines series at Tribeca Performing Arts Center on Satuday, February 18. The performance will recall the Greenwich Village jazz club Boomer’s, as well as hard bop jazz pianist Cedar Walton.
The Lost Jazz Shrines series is dedicated to bringing legendary NYC jazz clubs back into the consciousness of the world with a thorough remembrance and celebration. Boomer’s was a jazz club in Greenwich Village during the 1970s and a venue for bebop musicians, with artists Barry Harris and Kenny Barron playing there.
At the club, Cedar Walton recorded the albums A Night at Boomers, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. Cedar Walton was an American hard bop jazz pianist who came to prominence as a member of drummer Art Blakey’s band before establishing a long career as a bandleader and composer. Several of his compositions have become jazz standards, including “Mosaic”, “Bolivia”, “Holy Land”, “Mode for Joe” and “Fantasy in D.”
The Helen Sung Quartet is comprised of Sung (piano), Jaleel Shaw (alto saxophone), Reuben Rogers (bass) and Kendrick Scott (drums). Pianist/composer Sung is a graduate of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance and won the Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Jazz Piano Competition. Her newest album Quartet+ garnered a 4.5 star DownBeat review and inclusion in its “Best of 2021 Albums” list, and a JazzTimes cover story (January 2022 issue). In addition to her own band, Helen has performed with such luminaries as the late Clark Terry, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Regina Carter, Terri Lyne Carrington, Cecile McLorin Salvant, and more.
Helen’s 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship is being applied toward a multi-movement composition for big band; one of the movements, “Wayne’s World,” won the 2022 BMI Charlie Parker Jazz Composition Prize.
Tribeca Performing Arts Center is located at 199 Chambers Street. For performances in Theatre 1, enter the West. St. Gate, on 190 West St., north of Chambers St. and south of Harrison Street.

The roof of the Marriott Syracuse Downtown’s Finger Lakes Ballroom will host a 5:00 p.m. concert performance. This event will also include honoring the 2023 Pioneer Public Service Award to George Kilpatrick, media pioneer and community affairs activist.
Althea Rene and Jeanette Harris
Established in 1998, CNY Jazz Central provides scholastic and public jazz programs for the Upstate New York. Their annual performances are more than 150 to a total annual audience of 50,000. Besides their shows of all kinds at their Jazz Central theater in downtown Syracuse, they present handful festivals and concerts including the Northeast Jazz & Wine Fest and Jazz in the City; the CNY Jazz Cabaret Series, a busy arts-in-education service, the SummerJazz Workshop, the Jazz at Timber Banks and Jazz On Tap Series, and other events in summer.
Detroit-born flutist Althea Rene, is known as a Motown music legacy, daughter of Dezie McCullers of the original Funk Brothers. She gained musical inspiration from her father and released her hit CD titled “In the Flow” in May 2013 collaborating with Grammy award-winning producer Michael Broening.
California-native saxophonist Jeanette Harris is an instrumentalist and songwriter who played saxophone and piano from grade school to high schoo. She won numerous awards and accolades, which led to her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Performance in Berklee College of Music in Boston. Furthermore, she has co-written hits with Norman Brown and Gerald Albright, with international touring experience with the legendary Teena Marie. Both artists log many thousands of miles annually, appearing in festivals and clubs worldwide.

“This by far the most groundbreaking duo we’ve ever presented to honor Black History Month and the powerful legacy of Black America’s music. Rene and Harris are pioneers in every way as jazz instrumentalists, singers, and songwriters, inspiring a new generation who thought it couldn’t be done. They’re already stars, and will become superstars in soul jazz for the 21st century. Come see history in the making for yourself.”

Joe Louis Walker has been active in the blues scene since the 60s, and in February Walker’s releasing more music — his upcoming album, Weight of the World, is set for release on February 17. To celebrate this release, Joe Louis Walker will perform at the Towne Crier Cafe in Beacon.
Walker broke onto the scene with a debut album called Cold Is The Night, but Joe Louis Walker had been on the scene for long before that. Growing up in the Bay Area amongst some of the greats, Walker is one of the last living connections to the forefathers of the blues; he learned first hand and played with the likes of B.B. King and James Cotton, and was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in his own right. Known for his additions to the electric blues genre, Walker plays searing guitar and sings from the heart. His sound draws from more than just blues — it leans into rock and roll, draws from funk’s keyboards. Walker isn’t afraid to employ instruments from across cultures and genres. Despite his varying styles, his lyrics stay true to blues traditions, switching between mournful whines, spitting vengeance and earnest passion.
Weight of the World is releasing under Forty Below Records. If Walker’s last release, Blues Comin’ On, is any indication, listeners can expect instant blues classics and perhaps some unconventional features — Hot Tuna’s Jorma Kaukonen and punk rocker Charlie Harper both made appearances on his 2020 release.
The Towne Crier Cafe hosts live music almost every night, and tickets to see Walker are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. He’s set to take the stage on February 24, tickets are for sale here.
