  • Razor Braids’ “She” Celebrates Sapphic Love and Spontaneity, Pop-Rock Style

Brooklyn pop-rock sensation Razor Braids has released their latest single, “She,” a femme-focused, upbeat pop track that captures the excitement and spontaneity of Sapphic love. Accompanied by a carefree music video portraying a lively party scene, Razor Braids invites us into the vibrant world of queer hookup culture.

“She” isn’t just a song; it’s an anthem for being unapologetically yourself and seizing the opportunity for love. With vocal timbres reminiscent of Carly Rae Jepsen and The Cranberries, “She” offers a fresh take on pop. However, production-wise, the track introduces a rougher edge, echoing the spirit of punk-rock legends such as The Clash and Bikini Kill.

    Razor Braids She

In discussing the themes of “She,” Razor Braids shared, “Letting yourself be present during moments of change or uncertainty is a common thread across our upcoming releases. ‘She’ is such a fun encapsulation of that theme: embracing the unknown and jumping into something that feels good and joyful, and allowing yourself to accept that joy even when fear is also present in that moment.”

Regarding their distinctive sound, Razor Braids explained, “We all grew up in different places and with different musical influences. We’ve learned how to embrace and utilize that within our songwriting. We all bring so many different inspirations to the table: country, folk rock, garage, indie rock, and punk. By tapping into the elements of these genres that we each connect with most, we’ve shaped our music. Connection—connecting with each other and with our audience—is an integral part of our live performance.

“We want everyone to feel like they’re part of something bigger than themselves when they see us live. That really shines through in the music and lyrics and also with how wild and fun we get on stage.”

  • AZ Releases ‘This Is Why’ In Anticipation of Latest Album

With hip hop’s ever-changing landscape, it had been a decade since Brooklyn native AZ graced fans with an album. The reserved hip hop legend has maintained status as a result of his pen and classic album cuts. However, his long-teased sequel, Doe Or Die IIbecame one of 2021’s undeniable success stories and proved AZ’s potent hip hop poetry still had a place in the rap game.

Since the release of Doe Or Die II, AZ has appeared on Westside Gunn’s “99 Avirex” Rick Ross’ “Vacheron,” Statik Selektah’s “Historic” and most recently on Tony Touch’s “Rampage 2.0” for Def Jam’s mixtape Documentary.

AZ "This Is Why" single release cover

Now AZ is back with the release of his single “This Is Why” in anticipation of his latest album, Truth Be Told, set for release on December 1. “This Is Why” interpolates a classic Slick Rick sample throughout, as the hip hop veteran takes on the role of the “been there, done that” MC. In light, he shouts out two Brooklyn legends — The Notorious B.I.G. and Mike Tyson — for serving as inspirations behind his success. With his effortless delivery and poignant rhymes, AZ embodies the grace and knowledge that comes with having survived some of New York City’s roughest eras.

    Album Details

After contributing behind the boards on both Doe Or Die and Doe Or Die II, AZ and legendary producer Buckwild team up once again. The GRAMMY-nominated Buckwild handles all of the production on the new album. With his own crate of classic production, Buckwild will look to recreate the mafioso, final-boss themed production that the elder AZ has thrived on in his late career surge. In addition, the album will feature guest appearances from fellow New York rhymers Fat Joe and Pharoahe Munch, adding diversified flavor and point of views.

  • Indie Rock Band Divining Rod release new single “King of The Night”

Indie country-rocker band Divining Rod released the first single “King of The Night” on Friday, October 20, from their upcoming EP entitled The House Will Always Win, due for release in January 2024.

Originally, Divining Rod was the solo project of Hawaiian native Miyuki Furtado of the former TooPure recording artists, The Rogers Sisters. The band includes lead Miyuki Furtado, guitarist/vocalist Patrick Harmon, bassist Matt Svigals, and drummer John Malone.

“King of The Night” combines a vocal performance that’s full of confidence and force with dynamic chords and soulful production to create a blues rock gem. The song explores themes of nightlife and the excitement of hitting the town on the weekend, with the monotony of misbehaving with the same folks, listening to the same tunes and ordering the same rounds of drinks. The song uses prominent and smooth country driven vocals, fused with the rhythm of rock and blues. The backbeat sets the tone and emphasizes the vocal-centric structure to make up the story of two gamblers who are headed for romance and heartbreak.

The new single will accompany four other songs to be released on their upcoming EP The House Will Always Win due for release in January. The EP was crafted during the same sessions as their previous EP, Santa Monica And Other Golden Classics. Divining Rod headed into the studio after a month-long residency on New York’s famed Circle Line. The House Will Always Win speaks of the affordability and accessibility of the city. Despite being a fun town, Miyuki sees a sense of sadness and desperation in the city

    Consider The Source

Consider The Source made a name for themselves in the NYC scene with their unique, genre-bending sound. Consider The Source Kashyyyk

The group’s newest single, “Kashyyyk” is a reference to a Star Wars fictional planet, where Chewbacca calls home. The psych-rock track demanded over 30 hours of work by producer Jacob Nadeau and editor Francesca Belcastro.

  • Marina Laurendi Captures Halloween Spirit in “halloween party”

Indie singer-songwriter, Marina Laurendi, is back with a second single off her upcoming Sophomore EP. The new track “halloween party,” is an ode to childhood innocence, the comfort and safety of home, and the bittersweet feeling of aging into adulthood, coming just in time for the spooky season.

Marina Laurendi is a singer/songwriter and musician, originally from the Western New York area. She started performing as an actress, singer, and dancer at a young age. Her career in musical theater led her to NYC, where she performed around the East Coast and Off-Broadway. Her music takes influence from the pulse of the NYC scene and the calmness of her Western NY upbringing.

Fusing elements of cinematic pop, alternative rock, and singer-songwriter lyricism, her nostalgic and singular sound is a breath of fresh air. She is poetic and moody, with haunting vocals and catchy melodies. Her music is steeped in personal experience yet is universally relatable.

“halloween party” is textured and dripping in ambiance, balancing soft indie rock with tender intimacy. Featuring undertones of singer-songwriter folk, muted acoustic guitar strums, quiet drums, and melodic lines, she captures the sounds that bring about the warm fuzzy feelings associated with home. The track is authentic and raw, featuring voice memos from Marina Laurendi’s childhood friends. It is honest and builds up beautifully into a bittersweet and nostalgic crescendo.

I wrote the song when we were getting ready to sell my childhood home and I was deciding what was next for me. That transitional period stirred up so many emotions and it got me reminiscing about my adolescence. Halloween parties at my childhood home are such a core memory for me and I associate them directly with my childhood and teenage years. When I think of them, I feel such a fondness for home and an appreciation of my upbringing that I didn’t truly value it until later in life.

    Marina Laurendi

“halloween party” by Marina Laurendi is the perfect song to add to your fall playlist. Catch up with her new releases and future shows here.

  • Frog To Return With Gothic But Cartoonish Album, “Grog”

New York duo Frog return with their fifth album, Grog, a collection of gorgeous Indie Americana full of the nostalgia, hope, defeat, and lust.l

Frog is made up of brothers Danny (songwriting) and Steve Bateman (drums, percussion, backup vocals).

While Steve believes a lot of his albums felt as if they took place in real-world cities (such as New York, and LA in the 70s), Steve describes this new album as taking place in Hades. He writes, “The whole thing is bathed in flames and the grooves are bubbling and the devil is a DJ smiling broadly.”

Eclectic and wildly creative, Frog’s new fully-realized LP veers from the gorgeous grooving funk of Black on Black on Black to the classic pop of “Maybelline” before New Ro” exemplifies the gothic and cartoonish characteristics that songwriter Daniel Bateman describes his latest work with.

Sometimes it’s Jonathan Richman, sometimes it’s Hall & Oates, sometimes it’s Billy Joel, sometimes it’s Steely Dan, sometimes it’s Townes Van Zandt…but it’s always Frog.

“There are really exciting places we were able to get to on this record, places that I didn’t know existed before I found them. It feels both gothic and cartoonish to me, big gargoyles, dark skies, storms, but the statues are of ‘Aaahh!!! Real Monsters.’ Every song is a step deeper into the abyss.”

    Daniel Bateman

Grog will be released both via CD and digital on November 17 and launched with a performance at YoFi Fest 11 (Yonkers, NY) which accompanies a screening of their “Kings of Blah documentary.

“Don’t Throw Your Words” is a hypnotic, insistent track that truly evokes the band’s dollhouse aesthetics. The dreamy vocals and recurring guitar riff create a stirring aura, repeating the lyrics “Don’t throw your words out.”
