  • Best of Hip Hop 2023: MVW and Valee No Longer Looking for Valeedation

    With hip hop firmly entrenched within pop music, artists tend to chase a sound in search of mainstream validation. However, every so often, a sound usually existing within its own niche crowd, that captures ears for its inventiveness. In making Valeedation, the duo of Valee and Staten Island native MVW have created their magnum opus (for now) and firmly established their sound within hip hop’s redundant landscape.

    Background to Valeedation

    Prior to this 2023 release, MVW’s hip hop journey began with two Valee assisted albums released in consecutive years. Despite its fresh perspective, MVW’s prior albums included their share of Hills and Valleys, while maintaining a sense of novelty. While Valee has long-established a niche audience in hip hop for his slick-talking, luxurious idioms, he lacked a go-to producer to consistently bring the best out of him. Correspondingly, as the classically trained MVW cast a wide net for artists to feature, he would not find a better match for his minimalist style than Valee. In essence, Valeedation is a continuance of the unique language that they’ve developed through their shared artistic vision. 

     

    Valeedation Review

    After all, cultivating and establishing a style of production is no easy task. Namely, MVW’s prior efforts maintained an ebb-and-flow between minimalist instrumentation and raging vocals. While this kept the listener on edge, to did very little for the albums sequencing. Conversely, on Valeedation, it all comes together as MVW along with Valee bring about his most cohesive effort yet.

    Introduced to the world with the release of singles “Pistachio” and “Tailor Swift,” MVW juxtaposes Valee’s nonchalant delivery with meticulous instrumentation blending into a sound coined as “museum rap.” In light, setting the tone for the album’s easy-going feel.

    Throughout Valeedation, Valee’s usual off-beat, luxurious discourse finds refinement, resulting in extremely digestible-yet-unique songs. For instance, Valee’s concentrated flows and rhymes carries is a tone setter for much of the album. Meanwhile, MVW is meticulous with his isntrument placement, with violins and pianos taking turns in rhythmic dominance. Moreover, records like “Yo Yo,” “Ain’t Exotic,” “Metro PCS” “Shrimp Fried Rice,” — and standout track “Liquid”– leave the Valeedation with a lasting feel-good identity. Thus, even when MVW and Valee deviate rhythmically on songs like “Tailor Swift,” it is only a quick detour before returning to its sonic seance. Together with a host of agreeable features — including standout showings from Tony Shhnow (“Yo Yo”) and Zeelopers (“Metro PCS”) — Valeedation stands as diverse musical oasis.

  • Chris Garneau Releases New EP ‘Out Of Love’

    New York artist Chris Garneau has released his new EP Out Of Love on December 8, preceding a pair of new singles titled “Millions” and “First Man”.

    Chris Garneau is an American alternative indie singer and songwriter who entered the music scene in 2006 after releasing debut album Music for Tourists. Garneau explores themes of excitement, heartbreak, surprise with the sound of electric guitar, upright bass and drums to round out powerful narrative anthems.

    “’First Man’ isn’t just about a first crush but more importantly an initial recognition of a person’s queerness. My boyfriend wrote the lyrics, basing it on his memories of falling in love with the macho action movie characters from his youth. The concept led to a laid back, folk rock country vibe, and that informed the other songs on the EP. I wanted the production to be mostly acoustic, back porch summer nights with a smoky saloon atmosphere. And thanks to JOFF art direction and styling, and photographer Michael George, the shots look like movie stills. Throughout the shoot, it felt like I was acting and inhabiting these characters’ spaces — that was the point of this whole EP, that’s exactly what we set out to do.”

    The EP is made up of four songs that are character driven and capture the feeling of being transformed by the way of love. This is Garneau’s first collaboration with his boyfriend Marc Briz, a lyricist and fiction writer. Garneau and Briz acknowledge their first recognition of being queer and veer towards the Americana; the lovesick cowboy, the celebrity actor who pines for the spiritual, the addict who leaves this earth with love for the life he lived.

    The EP sparks a lush and soulful ballad which emerges emotive songwriting and displays a layered sonic landscape, speaking truth towards owning your identity and casting off shame. The songs are powerful, poignant, and mesmerize the intensity of the story despite its dark subject matter. Chris continues to pursue a diverse array of sound that influence an otherworldly and sensible talent.

  • Hearing Aide: SUPER HOT, Harmonica Lewinski

    Rochester surf-rock outfit Harmonica Lewinski released their newest album, SUPER HOT, on November 24. Recorded in analog style on a Tascam reel-to-reel machine, the album showcases 12 tracks with a fun groove and creative tone.

    Harmonica Lewinski formed in 2012 in Rochester. The group cites a distinct blend of surf-rock, disco, and punk that inspires their new EP. Since their first release, Good Vibes/Bad Vibes released in 2012, the five-piece band has dropped eight full-length releases, with SUPER HOT marking their first since their 2021 EP Lost Weekend

    Largely focused on instrumentals, SUPER HOT marks an investigation of funky, groovy disco-rock beats. The album was recorded on a Tascam reel-to-reel machine, an analog tape recorder that dates back to the 1980s. 

    A key track on the record, “Burgundy Bandit” is a groovy, methodical track to open the album. Led by the commanding bass line and meandering guitar melodies, the track introduces Harmonica Lewinski’s style and strongly holds listeners’ attention for its four and a half minute instrumental run.

    “Shadow Sequence,” the fifth track on SUPER HOT, diverts slightly from the groovy, meandering tone that the majority of the record follows. Beginning with an alternative, syncopated rhythm, the vocals are reminiscent of an excitable Orville Peck. The track is relatively short with only two minutes and change, but is certainly a strong point in the EP.

    Finally, “Cakewalk” is introduced by a solo bass line supported by a steady, rhythmic drum kick and vocals. Again, this track is only about two minutes, but after a few listens the guitar melody will get caught in your head.

    SUPER HOT is a proficient review of funky, bass-driven surf rock. Though many of the tracks get lost in each other due to similarity in overall sound, this doesn’t detract from the clear skill and fun listening experience from the whole album.   • Hearing Aide: Chess Club Release Debut EP “They Wanted A Demo” ft. Isaiah Sharkey, Felix Pastorius & Cory Wong

    Chess Club recently released their debut EP, They Wanted a Demo on November 17. The 4 track brain-child of Adam Chase (JAZZ IS PHSH, James Brown Dance Party) and Danny Darress clocks in at just under 15 minutes. The EP notably features both Felix Pastorius (Cindy Blackman, Jeff Coffin, and son of Jaco) and Isaiah Sharkey (John Mayer, D’Angelo).

    Chase and Darress, also known by their stage names Champagne and Paris, recorded the entirety of the EP live at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, North Carolina. They recruited Cory Wong (Vulfpeck, Fearless Flyers) as their mixing engineer for the release. Headed into the studio with an all star line-up ready to record, They Wanted a Demo was born.

    When Chase and Darress formed the group in 2023, they set out to create something unique, fresh, and different from their previous projects. As the drummer and keyboardist/vocalist respectively, Champagne and Paris utilized their jazz backgrounds and expertise to write four ear-worm pop songs. The EP features lighthearted, sometimes humorous lyrical topics, and an extremely tight rhythm section reminiscent of early R’n’B and Vulfpeck-like minimalist funk.

    The first and third tracks off the EP, “Your Shirt” and “Stay Fresh” feature Felix Pastorius on bass guitar. “Your Shirt”, a song about getting caught staring at someone’s shirt, is driven by Felix’s bassline and Darress on Wultizer. “Stay Fresh”, which tackles the topic of letting someone you love know they might need a breath mint, is defined by its chill, laid back pocket groove. This track features a solo by Pastorius. 

    The remaining tracks, “Santa Knows” and “It’s Not Me, It’s You” feature Isaiah Sharkey on guitar. He provides beautiful accompaniment to the duo’s Christmas ballad, and brings the song to new heights during a meticulously built guitar solo. His stylistic techniques during the introduction of “It’s Not Me, It’s You” and phrasing throughout adds an additional layer of depth and flavor. He is the featured soloist on both tracks. 

    As stated on their Bandcamp, “With an irreverent sense of humor and a knack for infectious hooks, Champagne and Paris have crafted a songbook that will go down in history as one of the best catalogues ever recorded.” They Wanted a Demo is officially available on all streaming services here

  • Hip Hop Supergroup Czarface Release New Album ‘Czartificial Intelligence’

    Hip hop purists can rejoice as Czarface, one the genre’s most creative outfits, returns with Czartifical Intelligence. This hip hop supergroup, consisting of Wu Tang Clan’s Inspectah Deck and Boston underground hip hop acts Esoteric and 7L, bring fans along on an abstract journey where cosmic hip hop, boom bap and comic book culture all intersect. Since their debut in 2013, the like-minded outfit has seen their “Czarface” centered music-verse expand beyond their wildest dreams.

    In fact, collaborations with other colorful and imaginative MC’s the likes of MF Doom, Ghostface Killah, Roc Marciano, Conway the Machine, Mayhem Lauren, Method ManAction Bronson, Vinnie Paz, Frankie Pulitzer and GZA have earned the group and series a cult-following. Chiefly, through intricate verses and captivating production, Czar and their guests — who accompany Czarface on missions and side-quests — have created a fruitful series of tapes with hundreds of merch drops including limited edition comics, apparel, action figures, art, shoes, and more featuring artwork illustrated by Lamour Supreme. Additionally, the group contributed the songs “Good Guys, Bad Guys” and “Today’s Special” to the soundtrack for the Marvel movie, Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

    The new album comes equipped with chaos, order and everything in between. It’s like a swirling vortex of cosmic carnage, but we bring it down to earth in places. We are, after all, in a new era. I hope what we made resonates with the people.

    The new album consists of 10- track and continues Czarface’s exploration of various themes along with similarly cutting-edge and technically proficient bars. Czartificial Intelligence features Logic, Kool Keith, Nems, Frankie Pulitzer and is set for release on December 1.

  • Hearing Aide: Mikaela Davis releases new EP “Our Creepy Eep Hour”

    Rochester native Mikaela Davis recently released a brand new EP, titled Our Creepy Eep Hour on October 31st. The three track EP, clocking in at just over 10 minutes, features her band Southern Star, with whom she’s been working and collaborating with for over a decade.

    Our Creepy Eep Hour follows the release of her LP, And Southern Star, which debuted to the public less than three months ago in August. This was her first full length LP featuring Southern Star. The band consists of Davis on harp, Cian McCarthy on guitar, Shane McCarthy on bass, Kurt Johnson on steel guitar, and Alex Coté on drums.

    This past May, Davis and Southern Star embarked on a three night residency at Parish Public House in Albany. Each night the band performed her originals alongside the Grateful Dead’s. On the last night, Davis performed Jerry Garcia’s 1972 solo album Garcia in full. The 4th track off the album, “Late for Supper/Spidergawd/Eep Hour” would later become the EP.

    Our Creepy Eep Hour breaks up the suite of songs into its three distinct sections; “Late for Supper,” the avant garde, abrupt opening leads into “Spidergawd”, which contains eerie soundscapes and audio of Garcia talking. This transitions into “Eep Hour”, a serene, slow building section that crescendos to a beautiful peak. The band’s patience, ability to communicate musically and talent is on full display. Their unique instrumentation allows for them to pay tribute to the original in a truly special way. This is the first time covers of these songs have ever officially been released.

    Mikaela also has a direct link to the Dead themselves. She has shared the stage with both Bob Weir and Phil Lesh; in 2018 with Wolf Bros at the Landmark Theater in Syracuse and Phil & Friends at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester for a 3 night run in late October of last year. She has also toured with Circles Around The Sun, the band responsible for curating the setbreak music at Fare Thee Well, a series of concerts celebrating 50 years of the Grateful Dead and their legacy. The Mikaela Davis/Dead link is apparent, and the respect and admiration she has for their musicianship is exemplified in both the covers and originals she performs.

  • Hearing Aide: Moments Before…, LikeTheAstronaut

    Four-piece group LikeTheAstronaut released their debut EP, titled Moments Before…. The EP explores electro-pop, folk, and alternative styles throughout the five unique tracks.

    The title track of the EP, “Moments Before…” includes key talents in the vocal effects, showcasing the band’s effective collaboration. In addition, it features heartfelt and melancholy lyrics, which add powerful emotion to the opening track.

    “Slumber Still” evokes similarities from electronic synth pop, but with a slower beat and swaying melody. Not only does it have a catchy, droning backtrack, it shows promising room for more development in the synth production.

    LikeTheAstronaut’s Moments Before… began with John Glenn, as a passion project following the passing of his father and the birth of his child. The collection explores the emotions coming with those events, through folk, electro-pop, and alternative musical influences.

    LikeTheAstronaut formed in Albany, with the collaboration of Dave Parker (Stellar Young, Weerd Science, Coheed & Cambria), John Glenn (Stellar Young), Josh Eppard (Coheed & Cambria) and Kyle Hatch (Stellar Young). The musicians work together as a seamless group, forming a promising band with an upward trajectory.

  • Hearing Aide: The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, Stephen Clair

    Stephen Clair released his newest album, The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, on November 17. A one-man recording production, the record showcases 11 songs with complete performances, meaning no edits or post-production re-dos.

    Stephen Clair began releasing music in 1997, but his musical career began long before. Citing Johnny Cash as a childhood influence, Clair recorded his newest record as a solo production, with the performances being only him and his guitar or piano. His tenth studio record, The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life is not one to miss.

    The record’s fifth track, “Days Passed,” shows off Clair’s proficiency in guitar picking and instrumentation. The vocals are a distinct, contrasting note, with a higher melody and Dylan-like tone and rhythm. It stands out as a more confident spot on the album.

    The eighth track on the album, “I Imagined I Was An Elevator,” stands out creatively, with an intriguing title and subject. The melody falters at points, but the vocal style brings flair to a simple singer-songwriter track, with just Clair and his guitar.

    The tenth track, and another one not to miss, “Bubble Bath,” begins with a hopeful chord progression and soothing guitar melodies. Not only is the music soothing, but the lyrics describe an oasis away from the world, with a cozy bubble bath for the listener.

  • Hearing Aide: Ian McCuen “What It Means To Be Young, Sad, and Alone”

    Ian McCuen’s sixth album and the longest by far, What It Means To Be Young, Sad, and Alone is a melancholy, transcendent record. It opens with the repeated line, “Funny how it feels like an art, the way things always fall apart. But eventually, so it goes, we all die alone.” With this air of self-aware critique, McCuen crafts a soothing, yet gut-wrenching depiction of truly what it means to be young, sad, and alone.

    Based in Buffalo, Ian McCuen’s first album came in 2017, with three volumes of Songs of Fleeting Permanence over the next few years. They operate relatively solo, writing, composing, and arranging all their own tracks across a wide range of instruments. What It Means To Be Young, Sad, and Alone includes over nine unique instruments, including a harmonica, saxophone, mandolin, banjo, and the ever-present electric guitar.

    The full record, boasting an impressive 20 tracks and amassing 80 minutes, follows a distinct style both musically and lyrically. McCuen creates an ethereal soundscape, with delicate vocals that are whispering and soothing. 

    The first track on the record, “A Reprise For The Lonely,” acts as an introductory point, both sonically and lyrically, for the rest of the record. However, it creates a strong introduction. The organ-like keyboard commands attention, and the backing vocals and whisper-like spoken word are sad, yet hypnotising. 

    Another song to pay attention to, “Checkerboard Purgatory,” comes as the 11th track on the record. Halfway through the massive tracklist, it easily gets lost among the masses, but it distinguishes itself with a catchy guitar track. 

    The 19th track on the record, “Vicissitude (So It Goes),” is an impressive 8 and a half minutes. Its vocals are subtle, whispering, and generally mellow, but the melody takes a minor shift halfway through. 

    Overall, What It Means To Be Young, Sad, and Alone is truly overwhelmingly sad. However, as a self-described “purveyor of sorrow,” this is exactly what McCuen aims to produce. For those that can indulge in the intense emotional experience of their monumental album, it’s a soothing display of poetry and ambient musicianship.

  • Listen To The Vigilance Committee’s Insightful LP “Coming Home”

    Indie punk band The Vigilance Committee has released their newest LP Coming Home– the band’s first LP since their historical concept record, Exit a Hero, released way back in April 2015. 

    The Vigilance Committee is what it is because of Peter J. Scoma (guitar/vox), Phil Corso (drums), Christian Cepeda (guitar), and Adam James Tomlinson (bass). Their latest releases since their other album, Exit a Hero, include their single “Reflections III” and the activism-driven EP “Join Us.” 

    Their newest release, Coming Home, features 10 emotionally charged songs that the band crafted during quarantine at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic

    While all songs are impactful, with specially crafted lyrics and perfected blends of electrifying punk and indie, there are some songs that particularly stand out: “It Was Dawn,” “Beacon,” “Hive Mind,” “Oakfield,” “Unanchored,” and “My Body (Moved But My Mind Stayed There).” 

    Most of the album consists of upbeat punk, but some slow back down, letting The Vigilance Committee’s indie side shine through. One such example is “Hive Mind” which is slower than the other songs, and slightly more relaxed. This song in particular shows The Vigilance Committee’s versatility– but they hit you with a perfectly crafted electric guitar solo in the middle. The lyrics themselves are equally as powerful, and stay true to the title. The song is about questioning our everyday lives– the “hive mind” mentality. This song begs the question: are we making our life choices with intent, or are we just going through the motions?

    Some of the most powerful, emotional lyrics are toward the end, showcasing the rage that many people in society face today due the decisions of those in control, such as government officials. “This is not the world that they sold us // Empty promises // A fire burns. // All we want is to be heard.” 

    Another powerful song is “My Body (Moved But My Mind Stayed There).” This song is more somber and relies on the instrumentals due to the few (but impactful) lyrics and angelic vocals.
