  • Day 3 of the Great South Bay Music Festival with Phil Lesh and the Eric Krasno Trio

    The third day of the Great South Bay Music Festival was one of the most anticipated and unforgettable days of the event. With the legendary Phil Lesh and Friends headlining the show, the ecstatic crowd was treated to an unforgettable three-and-a-half-hour set filled with Grateful Dead classics.

    Phil Lesh, the founding member of the Grateful Dead, brought together a group of exceptionally talented musicians to join him on stage for an unforgettable performance. The lineup included Eric Krasno on guitar and vocals, Jason Crosby on keys and vocals, John Molo on drums, James Casey on sax and vocals, Jennifer Hartswick on trumpet and vocals, and Grahame Lesh on guitar and vocals.

    The setlist kicked off with the classic “Shakedown Street,” setting the tone for a night of euphoric melodies. The band members really clicked well and it was obvious to see, as they effortlessly fed off each other’s energy. With Eric Krasno’s mesmerizing guitar solos, Jennifer Hartswick’s soulful singing, and Phil Lesh’s iconic bass lines, the audience was treated to an immersive musical experience.

    The band didn’t hold back in delivering Grateful Dead favorites, and “Friend of the Devil” had the entire crowd singing along. The musicians felt like close friends as they played together, sharing melodies and harmonies that showed how well they understood each other’s music.

    Earlier in the day, before the Phil Lesh and Friends set, the Eric Krasno Trio took the stage. Eric Krasno, already dazzling the audience as part of the headliner, showcased his versatility and talent in this earlier performance. The trio delivered a captivating set, drawing from various genres and captivating the audience with their musical finesse.

    Aside from the headliners, the day also featured a diverse lineup of acts, each adding their unique flavor to the festival. Acts like Neighbor, Cassandra House, and Baked Shrimp contributed to the day’s eclectic vibe, ensuring that there was something for every music enthusiast.

  • Great South Bay Music Festival 2023: Unforgettable Start with Iconic Performances

    The anticipation had been building for months, and finally, the 2023 Great South Bay Music Festival kicked off its grand celebration of music and culture at Shorefront Park in Patchogue. From July 20 through July 23, this picturesque waterfront location became a haven for music enthusiasts and festival-goers alike, promising four days of pure musical bliss. Day 1, in particular, set the bar high with an impressive lineup that left the crowd yearning for more.

    The festivities commenced with a soulful blues performance by Kerry Kearney & the Kings of the Psychedelta. Kearney’s mastery of the guitar and the band’s raw energy created an atmosphere that was both electrifying and calming. Their music served as the perfect opener, drawing people in and setting the tone for a night of unforgettable performances.

    Next up was the legendary band, The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Known for their fusion of rock, blues, and soul, the band wasted no time in getting the audience on their feet. Kim Wilson’s dynamic presence and the band’s energy proved why they have been a crowd favorite for decades. With classic hits like “Tuff Enough” and “Rock With Me,” The Fabulous Thunderbirds delighted old fans and won over new ones, turning the festival grounds into one giant dance floor.

    As the night progressed, the stage was graced by the presence of the iconic Dave Mason. The audience was taken on a nostalgic journey through Mason’s illustrious career, with hits from his time with Traffic and his successful solo career.     Samantha Fish, the incredibly talented blues-rock artist, opened the show. Adding to the excitement, she brought along her collaborator and fellow Texas guitarist, Jesse Dayton, with whom she had recently released their first collaborative album, “Deathwish Blues.” The electrifying night began with the title track, which instantly captivated the audience. Throughout the set, the duo showcased their musical chemistry, delivering standout performances of Dayton-led songs like “Down in the Mud.” The set reached its climax with the powerful and infectious “Riders,” a song that left the crowd craving for more. Together, Samantha Fish and Jesse Dayton left a lasting mark, celebrating the blues and leaving everyone in awe of their extraordinary talents.

The crowd erupted with thunderous applause and cheers as he launched into his set, effortlessly transitioning between blistering guitar solos and heartfelt vocals. Backed by his incredibly talented Damn Right Blues Band, they created a mesmerizing atmosphere of blues and rock that resonated throughout the park. The audience was treated to a repertoire of his greatest hits, including “Damn Right, I’ve Got the Blues,” “Skin Deep,” and Muddy Waters “Hoochie Coochie Man.” Each song was met with resounding applause, highlighting the timeless appeal of his music.

Blues icon Bobby Rush and his son joined Buddy Guy on stage for a rendition of “Chicken Heads.” The trio brought a new dynamic to the performance, seamlessly blending their styles and creating a magical musical synergy. To conclude the evening, all the artists gathered on stage for an impromptu jam session. The stage was alive with energy as each artist took turns exchanging riffs, trading solos, and sharing the spotlight.

  • Honoring Hip Hop Legends: Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame’s 50th Anniversary Show

    The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame hosted a Hip Hop 50th Anniversary Show on Sunday June 11th. The show paid tribute to some influential artists and pioneers of hip hop. This event showcased the genre’s history, highlighted the achievements of renowned musicians, and provided a platform for insightful discussions. With the unveiling of an LL Cool J statue and a panel discussion featuring industry legends, the celebration was a memorable tribute to the cultural impact of hip hop.

    The event began with the unveiling of a stunning statue honoring the iconic rapper and actor LL Cool J. Created by sculptor Sherwin Banfield, the statue captured LL Cool J’s charisma, influence, and contributions to the hip hop industry. This immortalization of LL Cool J served as a powerful symbol of his lasting impact as one of the genre’s most influential figures. Banfield also has a monument dedicated to The Notorious B.I.G. located in Dumbo, Brooklyn.

    The 50th Anniversary Show featured a thought-provoking panel discussion that brought together several esteemed hip hop pioneers. Ralph McDaniels, a renowned video music director and host of the legendary “Video Music Box” program, joined forces with DJ Jazzy Jay, a trailblazing DJ, and Keith Shocklee, a member of the influential production team The Bomb Squad. They were joined by MC Glamorous, Dinco D, Aj Woodson, Johnny Juice, and members of Son of Bazerk, Tony Allen, and Cassandra Jackson.

    The panelists reminisced about their experiences on Long Island and discussed the evolution of hip hop. Their wisdom provided attendees with a unique opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of hip hop’s cultural significance and its enduring impact on music and society.

    The audience was treated to a energetic performance featuring some of the industry’s most celebrated artists after the panel discussion. DJ Jazzy Jay, a true turntable virtuoso, took to the stage followed by DJ Johnny Juice, MC Glamorous, Aj Woodson, Dinco D. A Son of Berserk reunion set was another highlight creating an electrifying atmosphere.

    The 50th Anniversary Show was meant to include the induction of the legendary hip hop group, the Fat Boys. However, due to unfortunate circumstances, Damon “Kool Rock-Ski” Wimbley was unable to attend, leading to the postponement of their induction. The organizers of The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame recognized the Fat Boys’ immense contributions and ensured that their induction would take place at a future event.

  • Ice-T Rocks The Bushwick Collective Block Party

    Ice-T rocked the stage at The 12th annual Bushwick Collective Block Party held on June 3rd in Brooklyn. The party proved to be an electrifying celebration of art, music, and community. Ice-T, the legendary rapper, actor, and cultural icon, headlined the concert and delivered a memorable performance that left the audience in awe.

    Ice-T, who has been a prominent figure in the hip-hop scene for over three decades, has consistently pushed boundaries with his thought-provoking lyrics. As he stepped onto the stage, the cheers and applause erupted, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience. Ice-T wasted no time in taking the audience on a musical journey through his extensive catalog. He seamlessly transitioned from classic hits like “Colors” and “6 in the Mornin’” to newer tracks that showcased his continued relevance in the ever-evolving rap landscape. He also brought a few special guests out including Kool Keith and Treach from Naughty by Nature.

    The 12th annual Bushwick Collective Block Party was not only about Ice-T, though. Dres from Black Sheep had a set as well, as did Tony Touch and Statik Selektah who also both brought guests. Coney Island native Nems made a quick appearance during Tony Touch’s set. Statik brought out some younger acts like Kota the Friend and Recoechi as well as Termanology. Shade 45 talent D-Stroy hosted the event and DJ Evil Dee helped keep the crowd amped with a mix of classic hip hop hits. The collective talent on display was a testament to the hip-hop spirited community that continues to thrive in Brooklyn.

    The event’s organizer, Joe Ficalora, created this open air gallery know as The Bushwick Collective over ten years ago. There are many murals of fallen hip-hop artists that pay tribute all around the area. Some include Guru, Nipsey Hussle, Biggie and Dave from De La Soul. The collective has transformed Bushwick into a hub of artistic expression. The annual block party serves as a culmination of their efforts, bringing together artists, musicians, and residents to celebrate the neighborhood’s vibrant spirit.

    This is an important year for hip-hop. It marks the 50th Anniversary, a significant milestone that pays tribute to the genre’s enduring influence and cultural significance. From its birth in the streets of the Bronx to its domination of the global music scene, hip-hop has continuously challenged norms, and given voice to marginalized communities.

  • Conway The Machine Releases Won’t He Do It and Celebrates at Ludlow House

    Conway The Machine just released his new full album Won’t He Do It? The album was released via Drumwork Music Group and EMPIRE.

    Features on this project include Westside Gunn, Benny The Butcher, Juicy J, Fabolous, 7xvthegenius, Dave East, Sauce Walka and Jae Skeese. Production includes acclaimed hip-hop producers Daringer, Justice League, Juicy J, and Khyrysis. The production on Won’t He Do It is top-level, with standout tracks like “Super Bowl” and “The Chosen” featuring guest appearances from Sauce Walka and Jae Skeese respectively.

    Throughout the album, Conway The Machine showcases his impeccable wordplay and storytelling ability. On “Brucifix” featuring Westside Gunn, Conway spits gritty bars over a hard-hitting beat, while Gunn delivers a standout verse that perfectly complements Conway’s style.

    One of the standout tracks on the album is Brooklyn Chop House featuring Fabolous and fellow Griselda member Benny The Butcher. The two rappers trade bars over a haunting instrumental, with Conway showcasing his storytelling abilities as he weaves a tale of drug dealing and violence. Overall, Wont He Do It is a powerful, introspective project that showcases Conway the Machine’s talent as a rapper and storyteller.

    To celebrate the album’s release, Conway held a record release party at Ludlow House in New York City. Guests in attendance included Westside Gunn, Armani Caesar, Nems, Statik Selektah, and 38 Spesh, among others. The event was a celebration of Conway’s success and a testament to the impact he’s had on the rap game.

  • In Focus: GZA, Big Daddy Kane and Roy Ayers at Sony Hall

    On Thursday, April 13, Sony Hall hosted a concert featuring three legendary names in hip-hop and jazz music: GZA, Big Daddy Kane, and Roy Ayers. Each artist brought their unique style and energy to the stage, creating a night to remember for fans of all ages.

    The evening began with Roy Ayers, who delighted the crowd with some of his biggest hits, including “Searching,” “Everybody Loves the Sunshine,” “Running Away,” “Firehouse,” and “Apache.” Ayers, a prolific jazz-funk musician who has been active since the 1960s, is known for his use of the vibraphone and his signature blend of jazz, funk, and soul.

    Next up was GZA, one of the founding members of the Wu-Tang Clan and a hip-hop legend in his own right. He took the stage to thunderous applause and launched into an electrifying set that included fan favorites like “Duel of the Iron Mic,””Living in the World Today,” “Cold World,” “Labels,” “4th Chamber,” “Shadowboxin,” and “Clan in the Front.” GZA’s powerful flow and sharp lyrics combined with the crowd’s energy to create an electric atmosphere that left everyone wanting more.

    After GZA’s set, Big Daddy Kane took the stage to the delight of the audience. The rapper, who first rose to prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s, performed classic hits like “Smooth Operator,” “Ain’t No Half Steppin’,” and “Warm It Up.” His performance was a testament to his status as a true hip-hop icon, and the crowd responded with thunderous applause and cheers.

    GZA then returned to the stage to finish the show, performing some of the biggest hits of his career, including “Reunited,” “C.R.E.A.M.,” “Triumph,” “Liquid Swords,” and “WU Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthin to Fuck With.” The crowd was on its feet rapping along to every word, as GZA and his live band brought the night to a close with an unforgettable performance.

    On April 1st, the stage at David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center was set for a truly special night of music, as Nathaniel Rateliff took the stage to perform Harry Nilsson’s album A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night. Backed by a full orchestra, Rateliff brought new life to these classic songs and captured the essence of Nilsson’s unique and captivating sound.

    A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night is an album of classic 20th century standards. Originally released in 1973, the album features Nilsson’s interpretations of tunes from the Great American Songbook, including “As Time Goes By,” “Makin’ Whoopee,” and “Always.”

    Rateliff’s performance of these songs was nothing short of spectacular, his powerful voice soaring above the arrangements of the orchestra. But he didn’t stop there. He also performed a selection of Nilsson’s other hits, including “Everybody’s Talkin’,” “Gotta Get Up,” and “Jump Into the Fire.” These songs are well-known for their catchy melodies and memorable lyrics, and Rateliff did them justice with his heartfelt performances.

    Phil Cook opened for Nathaniel Rateliff, showcasing his musical abilities as he played the piano with great proficiency. His soulful and emotive piano playing captured the audience’s attention.

  • RIOPY Presents “Thrive” at The Crypt Sessions

    On Tuesday, March 28, the talented piano player RIOPY graced the stage of the Church of Intercession Crypt. This intimate concert setting added a unique and hauntingly beautiful atmosphere to RIOPY’s already mesmerizing music.

    RIOPY, born and raised in France, began playing the piano at the age of six. He has since become a world-renowned pianist. His music is a blend of classical and contemporary, with a focus on emotional depth and storytelling through music.

    The performance opened with a piece called “La Nocturne,” a haunting and melancholic melody that set the tone for the rest of the evening. From there, RIOPY gave the audience a preview of his upcoming album, Thrive. The album will be released on April 14th under Warner Classics.

    The Crypt Sessions is a concert series that takes place in the crypt of the Church of the Intercession, located on West 155th St in Upper Manhattan. The Crypt Sessions series was founded in 2020 by Andrew Ousley, who wanted to create a unique and intimate concert experience for both the performers and the audience.

    The concerts are held in the crypt, which is a small, underground chamber beneath the 180 old Episcopal church. The space has a unique atmosphere and excellent acoustics, making it an ideal venue for live music performances. The Crypt Sessions feature a wide range of musical genres, from classical and opera to jazz and indie rock. The performers are often world-renowned musicians who are attracted to the unique setting and intimate atmosphere of the series
