  • American Classical Orchestra’s Holiday Concert: Italian Masterpieces at Corpus Christi Church

In a festive celebration of Italian musical heritage, the American Classical Orchestra (ACO), under the guidance of Founder and Artistic Director Thomas Crawford, is set to enchant audiences with a holiday concert program on Thursday, December 14 at 7 PM at Corpus Christi Church, located at W. 121 St. between Broadway & Amsterdam in Manhattan.

This concert marks the second of four Manhattan performances by the ACO this season, featuring a captivating selection of Italian works, including the rediscovery of Antonio Bencini’s long-lost Christmas oratorio “Gesù Nato” and Antonio Gianettini’s “Magnificat,” in collaboration with the Academy of Sacred Drama.

The heart of the program lies in the resurrection of Antonio Bencini’s forgotten masterpiece, “Gesù Nato,” rescued from the depths of the Vatican archives. This Christmas oratorio, composed in 1742, offers a glimpse into the enchanting world of the Nativity, featuring vocal soloists, a choir, and a vibrant orchestra of trumpets, oboes, and strings. Antonio Gianettini’s “Magnificat” and five psalm settings, written for four-part chorus with string accompaniment, further enrich the program, providing a sonic tapestry rooted in the Roman Catholic tradition.

The evening will be graced by the talents of renowned soloists:

Linda Tsatsanis (Soprano): Praised by The New York Times for her “ravishing” performance at the Boston Early Music Festival.
Kate Maroney (Mezzo-Soprano): A CBC and Naxos recording artist, also recognized for her expertise as a voice and vocal pedagogy teacher at Mannes School of Music and Yale University.
Alex Guerrero (Tenor): Applauded by The New York Times for his “apt comic timing,” Guerrero has been a featured singer in numerous ACO performances.

The members of the American Classical Orchestra Chorus will join forces with the soloists to deliver a mesmerizing performance under the baton of Thomas Crawford.

Antonio Gianettini, a 17th-century Italian organist, singer, and composer, will take center stage with his Psalms and the majestic Magnificat. Having served as maestro di cappella to Francesco II d’Este, Duke of Modena, Gianettini’s compositions were cherished in both Italy and Germany during his lifetime.

The rediscovery of Antonio Bencini’s “Gesù Nato” is a significant musical event, offering what is likely the modern premiere of this hidden gem. Composed in 1742, the oratorio captures the spirit of the Nativity and was tucked away in the Vatican Library for three centuries before resurfacing.

This performance is a collaborative effort between ACO and the Academy of Sacred Drama, founded by ACO violinist and scholar Jeremy Rhizor in 2013. The Academy is dedicated to Baroque oratorio that draws inspiration from biblical tales and the lives of saints, enriching the cultural and spiritual experience.

Tickets for this musical extravaganza are priced at $75, $55, and $35, and can be purchased at ACO’s website or by calling ACO at (212) 362-2727, ext. 4.

  • Dance In Albany Series Continues with Trailblazing Contemporary Company

The vibrant dance scene in Albany is set to be illuminated once again as The Egg and the University at Albany join forces to present the groundbreaking Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company on Saturday, December 2 at 8 pm, part of the Dance in Albany series.

The performance promises to captivate audiences at The Egg at the Empire State Plaza in downtown Albany, marking a return to the Capital Region since their last appearance in 2015.

Founded in 1982, the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company emerged from an extraordinary 11-year collaboration between Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane (1948–1988). This partnership not only redefined the duet form but also foreshadowed themes of identity, form, and social commentary that have left an indelible mark on American dance. With a global footprint encompassing over 200 cities across 40 countries, the company stands as a beacon of innovation and power in the dance-theater world.

The company’s repertoire is a testament to its diversity, exploring various subject matters, visual imagery, and stylistic approaches to movement, voice, and stagecraft. Collaborating with an eclectic array of artists, including Keith Haring, Cassandra Wilson, and Jenny Holzer, the company’s intensely collaborative creation process has yielded a rich tapestry of performances.

The upcoming program by the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company will showcase “Love Redefined” from 1996 and “Story/” from 2013.

“Love Redefined,” inspired by the 1992 commission for the Lyon Opera Ballet titled “Love Defined,” is a powerful ensemble work that embodies Jones’ distinct and poetic style. Set to Daniel Johnston’s whimsical music and featuring décor by Donald Baechler, the performance is an energetic reflection on love and human relationships.

“Story/” is a reworking of “Story/Time” (2012), where chance plays a central role in choreography, music, lighting, set elements, and costumes. Set to Schubert’s String Quartet #14, Death and the Maiden, “Story/” draws from a trove of choreographic material spanning 35 years. The piece explores the dynamic interplay between movement and music, showcasing Jones’ exploration of the dramaturgical possibilities that arise from this interaction.

The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company has garnered numerous accolades, including New York Dance and Performance Awards (“Bessie”) for various productions. Noteworthy mentions include awards for “Chapel/Chapter” at Harlem Stage (2006) and “Deep Blue Sea” (2021). The company was also nominated for the 1999 Laurence Olivier Award for “Outstanding Achievement in Dance and Best New Dance Production.”

Before the performance, a Prelude talk sponsored by the Dance Alliance will take place at 7:15 pm at The Egg. Mary DiSanto-Rose, former Dance Department chair at Skidmore College, will engage in a conversation with Janet Wong, Associate Artistic Director of the company and New York Live Arts.

Tickets for the performance are priced at $36 and can be purchased at The Egg Box Office on the Concourse Level of the Empire State Plaza in Albany, by phone at 518-473-1845, and online at theegg.org.

Remaining performances in the Dance in Albany series promise a diverse and exciting lineup, including Mark Morris Dance Group (January 25), Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company with Capital Trio (January 27), Monica Bill Barnes & Company in “The Running Show” (February 3), NoGravity Theatre (February 9), Savion Glover (April 13), and Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company (May 18).

  • Grammy Award Winner Ani DiFranco to Make Broadway Debut as ‘Persephone’ in Hadestown

In a groundbreaking announcement, producers Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold, and Tom Kirdahy revealed that Grammy Award®-winning music icon Ani DiFranco will embark on her Broadway debut as ‘Persephone’ in the Tony® and Grammy Award-winning Best Musical, Hadestown, at the Walter Kerr Theatre starting February 9, 2024.

DiFranco’s association with Hadestown dates back to 2010 when she extended an invitation to Anaïs Mitchell to release the original studio album on DiFranco’s label, Righteous Babe Records. Having originated the role of ‘Persephone’ on the album, DiFranco’s return to the character marks a significant moment in the evolution of the show.

Expressing her excitement, Ani DiFranco stated, “I could not be more thrilled to be joining the cast of Hadestown. It’s like I get to rewind to my New York youth and follow the road not taken.”

Mitchell added, “I can’t really overstate the influence of Ani’s music and example on me as a young songwriter. Poetic, bold, radically emotive and FUN, she simply has been a mythic figure in my life, and I can’t think of anything more beautifully full circle than Ani playing the role of ‘Persephone’ on Broadway. Grateful and awestruck.”

Widely acknowledged as a feminist icon, Ani DiFranco pioneered the DIY movement, establishing her own record label in 1990. Beyond her reputation as the “Little Folksinger,” her music spans genres from punk and funk to hip hop and jazz. Her recent works include the 2021 album Revolutionary Love and the 25th-anniversary reissue of Little Plastic Castle in June 2023, both released on her label Righteous Babe Records. In addition to her musical endeavors, her memoir No Walls and the Recurring Dream became a New York Times Top 10 best seller in May 2019, and she recently released her debut children’s book, The Knowing.

Hadestown’s current cast features Betty Who as Persephone (through February 4), Jordan Fisher as Orpheus, Tony Award winner Lillias White as Hermes, Phillip Boykin as Hades, and Solea Pfeiffer as Eurydice. The production, with its unique blend of modern American folk music and New Orleans-inspired jazz, has earned critical acclaim for reimagining the ancient tale and providing audiences with a captivating theatrical experience.

In addition to her musical achievements, Ani DiFranco has left an indelible mark in her hometown of Buffalo. Renaming the 19th-century Gothic church she bought and renovated, the venue, originally dubbed The Church, is now known as Babeville. This multifaceted space houses her music label, Righteous Babe Records, and the Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center. A proud Buffalo native, DiFranco continues to contribute to the cultural vibrancy of her hometown.

Tickets for Hadestown are available at www.seatgeek.com/hadestown-tickets or by visiting the Walter Kerr Theatre box office. Don’t miss the chance to witness Ani DiFranco’s Broadway debut in this transformative and resonant production.

  • Ukrainian Quartet DakhaBrakha Set to Perform at Binghamton University

On November 20, the renowned Anderson Center for the Performing Arts at Binghamton University will play host to the experimental Ukrainian world music quartet, DakhaBrakha, promising an enchanting evening of musical fusion and cultural exploration.

Born from the avant-garde theatre community in Kyiv back in 2004, DakhaBrakha, a term translating to “give and take” in old Ukrainian, has been pushing the boundaries of traditional Ukrainian folk music. Their innovative approach blends these age-old melodies with global rhythms, creating a truly unique and powerful sonic experience. The quartet, accompanied by an array of instruments from Indian, Arabic, African, and Ukrainian traditions, delivers a vocal performance that is both astonishingly powerful and culturally rooted.

NPR aptly describes DakhaBrakha as a group that “mixes everything from punk-pop to traditional Ukrainian songs in cool yet beguiling textures.” However, it is their live performances that truly set them apart, transforming DakhaBrakha from an intriguing musical act into a brilliant and unmissable phenomenon.

Rooted in their theatrical origins, DakhaBrakha’s shows boast a strong visual element, featuring dramatic folk garb, original projection art, and poignant video footage addressing the ongoing conflict with Russia. This visual storytelling, added after Russia’s invasion of Crimea in 2014, has elevated DakhaBrakha from musical performers to international ambassadors of the Ukrainian resistance.

At the crossroads of Ukrainian folklore and theatre, DakhaBrakha’s musical spectrum spans from intimate to riotous, exploring contemporary roots and rhythms. Their performances inspire not just musical appreciation but also cultural and artistic liberation.

Join DakhaBrakha for a night where boundaries fade away, and cultural resonance takes center stage. Experience the magic of global sounds in the heart of Binghamton University, as DakhaBrakha shares their transcendent musical journey.

The Osterhout Concert Theater will be the stage for this extraordinary performance, starting at 7:30 p.m. General admission tickets range from $25 to $60, with a 10% discount on premium seats available for seniors, veterans, and Binghamton University faculty, staff, and alumni. Student and child tickets are an affordable $10, offering everyone the chance to immerse themselves in this cultural and musical journey.

  • Razor Braids’ “She” Celebrates Sapphic Love and Spontaneity, Pop-Rock Style

Brooklyn pop-rock sensation Razor Braids has released their latest single, “She,” a femme-focused, upbeat pop track that captures the excitement and spontaneity of Sapphic love. Accompanied by a carefree music video portraying a lively party scene, Razor Braids invites us into the vibrant world of queer hookup culture.

“She” isn’t just a song; it’s an anthem for being unapologetically yourself and seizing the opportunity for love. With vocal timbres reminiscent of Carly Rae Jepsen and The Cranberries, “She” offers a fresh take on pop. However, production-wise, the track introduces a rougher edge, echoing the spirit of punk-rock legends such as The Clash and Bikini Kill.

In discussing the themes of “She,” Razor Braids shared, “Letting yourself be present during moments of change or uncertainty is a common thread across our upcoming releases. ‘She’ is such a fun encapsulation of that theme: embracing the unknown and jumping into something that feels good and joyful, and allowing yourself to accept that joy even when fear is also present in that moment.”

Regarding their distinctive sound, Razor Braids explained, “We all grew up in different places and with different musical influences. We’ve learned how to embrace and utilize that within our songwriting. We all bring so many different inspirations to the table: country, folk rock, garage, indie rock, and punk. By tapping into the elements of these genres that we each connect with most, we’ve shaped our music. Connection—connecting with each other and with our audience—is an integral part of our live performance.

“We want everyone to feel like they’re part of something bigger than themselves when they see us live. That really shines through in the music and lyrics and also with how wild and fun we get on stage.”

  • Anna Kuwabara Announces Resignation as Executive Director of Albany Symphony

Anna Kuwabara, the executive director of the Albany Symphony, has announced her resignation, effective January 31, 2024.

Kuwabara, who joined the Albany Symphony in July 2017, played a crucial role during her tenure. She coincided her first day with the launch of Water Music New York, a celebration of the Erie Canal’s bicentennial through a series of free community concerts across the state. Her departure will be followed by the Symphony’s Board of Directors initiating the search for a new executive director.

Faith Takes, Chair of the Albany Symphony Board of Directors, expressed gratitude for Kuwabara’s leadership and dedication over her six-and-a-half-year stint. Under her guidance, the organization deepened its ties within the Capital Region community, initiated inclusion, diversity, equity, and access efforts, underwent two strategic planning processes, and navigated negotiations for two collective bargaining agreements with the Albany Musicians’ Association.

Kuwabara, alongside the management team, orchestra musicians, and David Alan Miller, successfully steered the Albany Symphony through the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the absence of in-person concert audiences, the power of music was upheld and continued to resonate within homes.

David Alan Miller, the Music Director and Conductor, acknowledged Anna Kuwabara’s invaluable contributions. “We all appreciate Anna’s hard work, dedication, and kindness over the past several years, particularly her inspired leadership guiding our orchestra through the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic. I wish her the very best on her next endeavor,” Miller stated.

Anna Kuwabara is appreciative for her time with the Albany Symphony, remarking on the extraordinary nature of the organization and the Capital Region. She spoke of her fondness for the staff, talented musicians, David Alan Miller, the dedicated Board, Vanguard volunteers, and loyal Symphony supporters. She will hold the Albany Symphony close to her heart as it approaches its 100th anniversary.

Throughout Kuwabara’s tenure, the Albany Symphony spearheaded several projects and initiatives that enriched the community, expanded the boundaries of classical music, and brought recognition and acclaim to the Capital Region. These initiatives included an invitation for the Albany Symphony to perform at the Kennedy Center’s SHIFT Festival in Washington, D.C., commemorating the WWI Armistice Centennial, and hosting the Sing Out! New York Festival to celebrate New York State’s leading role as a champion of civil liberties. Additionally, the 2019-2020 Season celebrated Phenomenal Women in Music, and the Convergence initiative aimed to explore and build relationships with Black cultural arts, culminating in the 2023 Convergence American Music Festival. The Albany Symphony also introduced the Soundtrack New York Film Music Festival, showcasing extraordinary music from classic films, video games, and popular movies. The organization secured its second GRAMMY win for Christopher Theofanidis’ Viola Concerto featuring Richard O’Neill.
