  • Marco Benevento Announces 2023 Tour, Stops in Woodstock and Jersey City

While many found the sudden lockdown spurred by 2020’s COVID-19 pandemic depressing, isolating and fruitless, Marco Benevento found the time trapped in his Hudson Valley dilapidated home studio to be inspiring and invigorating. In that room, surrounded by outdated technology, malfunctioning drum kits and eclectic instruments, the Woodstock keyboardist found his latest album: Benevento. Benevento will be celebrating the album’s release with a tour across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Midwest in March 2023.

    benevento

The production of Benevento took place over many solo jam sessions, rife with experimentation and improvisation, things Benevento is no stranger to. Within the keyboard, Benevento finds and exploding breadth of sound and texture, and he wanders into the realm of psychedelic funk in his latest album, taking with him notes of rock, jazz and especially dance.

Benevento is pulling a two night stand in his home town of Woodstock at Levon Helm Studios in January, 2023. Tickets go on sale November 18 at 10 a.m. for the March leg of Marco Benevento’s tour. He’ll have a couple shows in the New York area, including on March 10 at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City. See the complete list of tour dates below; tickets here.

  • Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams Announce new Album, Woodstock Stop

Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams announced their long-awaited album Live At Levon’s! will be released on Feb. 3. They have also announced a tour with stops in Tarrytown, Poughkeepsie, and Woodstock.

    Larry Campbell

Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams returned to their Woodstock home in 2019 to create the record, after a long year of touring. They recorded it at Levon Helm Studios, a historic and dual-purposed recording studio and live music venue founded by the legendary Levon Helm. The duo played multiple shows there with the Midnight Ramble Band, fronted by Helm with whom Campbell served as a bandleader for over a decade.

The album was supposed to be released in 2020 after a live performance was recorded at the studio with their musician friends. Of course, the pandemic stopped that from happening, and Campbell ended up catching COVID in March 2020. With all that aside, they are ready to perform and get back into touring.

I’ll never forget the first time I experienced performing as a child and knew my lot in life was set. The only reason I am a singer is because of the indefinable spark that happens with the giving and receiving of your most intimate selves, back and forth, between the artist on stage and the audience there in the room. If I can’t see the audience because of lighting, it almost becomes even more spiritual, because it’s all just feeling them—us together in the moment. And each performance/audience has its own personality. If you can drop the thinking and just ‘be’ with them and this sharing of your most intimate selves, there’s no describing the transcendence.

    Teresa Williams

The record Live At Levon’s! puts Campbell’s world-class guitar skills on display, and shows his songwriting capabilities. William’s vocals provide raw honesty and her trademark fragility and ferocity. Their new single “Angel of Darkness” is out today.

Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams are also going on tour, and are hitting Tarrytown on Nov. 18, Poughkeepsie on Nov. 19, and a special performance at the Levon Helm Studios where they recorded the album in Woodstock on April 22. Their brand-new album is available for preorder here and to purchase tickets to their tour go here.

  • Bethel Woods Center for the Arts: Keeping the Woodstock Dream Alive 53 Years Later

Nestled in the heart of the Catskills, on the land where the iconic Woodstock music festival took place, stands the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. Aug. 15, 1969, marks 53 years since the festival, and Bethel Woods Center for the Arts continues to preserve, develop, and discover more about the event every day.

With 800 acres, a 16,000-seat amphitheater, Event Gallery, Conservatory, and museum, the cultural institution offers programming for all ages in the scenic area. As part of the National Register of Historic Places since 2017, the institution, and the award-winning Museum at Bethel Woods, work to keep the spirit of the legendary festival alive.

The Museum at Bethel Woods holds a permanent Woodstock exhibit showcasing 20 films, five interactive productions, 164 artifacts, over 300 photographic murals, and much more. The 6,728 square feet museum allows attendees to truly get a glimpse into the festival which changed the music scene forever and launched the careers of beloved artists.

Dr. Neal Hitch, the senior curator at the Museum at Bethel Woods, works diligently to bring more information about Woodstock to the public. Currently, the museum is two years into a five-year plan to collect as many oral histories as possible from those who attended the festival to put them into a searchable database. In 2023, the museum plans to hold pop-ups across cities such as New Mexico, Los Angeles, and Columbus, to hear from even more attendees.

I think that the story that wasn’t written very often is the story of why somebody came, what happened to them when they came and how that has affected their life since attending Woodstock. For many people, Woodstock was a defining moment, something that we still talk about 50 years later.

-Dr. Neal Hitch on the Oral History Initiative

To mark Woodstock’s 53rd anniversary, the museum is hosting events throughout the week, including a behind-the-scenes tour and a look into how the festival was planned, and how the site is now managed and preserved. The public-facing program allows for a unique look at the current research happening on-site.

Hitch continues to learn more about the festival throughout his work, and every new fact keeps the spirit of the festival alive. Four young men spent nine months planning Woodstock which would become a message of peace and the staple for festivals after it. “If you go to Coachella or Bonnaroo, you’re really seeing the result of this dream that people had of seeing music in this artistic environment,” Hitch said.

Visit the grounds of the Woodstock festival at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, and celebrate with some of the people who know it best. For more information about the cultural institution, programs, and events, visit the center’s website.

  • WRAPS – Woodstock Rock Art and Poster Show – Comes To Bearsville this May

WRAPS, a new tradeshow and art exhibition dedicated specifically to rock posters is coming to the Bearsville Center in Woodstock on May 14-15.

    WRAPS

The popular San Francisco event, The Rock Poster Show (TRPS) is the model for WRAPS, which stands for Woodstock Rock Art and Poster Show. The event will feature exhibitors displaying their work, multi-media productions, art and design workshops, and live music.

The musical acts include Stella Blue’s Band, Soule Monde (members of the Trey Anastasio Band), and Woodstock’s own Misty Mountain Ramblers.

A poster designed by WRAPS producer Mike DuBois
A poster for the Trey Anastasio Band designed by Zeb Love

Since the 1990s interest in rock posters has increased. Vintage posters from the classic rock era are considered collectibles. While more recently it has become an art form in its own right, with artists and designers dedicating their talents to creating original works. The event is open to both collectors and artists who would like to display their work.

Mike DuBois, one of the pioneers of rock poster art and Syracuse native, will produce WRAPS. His surrealist, psychedelic art has become a staple of rock music. More than likely, you’ve seen his work without knowing you have. In the past, high profile bands including the Grateful Dead, The Rolling Stones, and Pink Floyd have commissioned his work. Currently, he runs HappyLife Productions a design firm in Woodstock.

The Bearsville Theater was the brainchild of the famed music manager, Albert Grossman. He had the idea to build a creative oasis for his clients—which included Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, and the Band—in the Catskills. Unfortunately, due to his untimely death in 1986 Grossman never saw the theater open in 1989. The Bearsville Theater is considered “acoustically perfect”. It was designed by music producer Todd Lundgren along with the Utopia Sound Stage.

With all the rock history at Bearsville Theater it would make a fitting location for a tradeshow meant to celebrate rock music’s legacy.

Tickets and registration information are on the WRAPS website.
