  • Flipturn Brings Indie Back to Buffalo

Indie legends Flipturn made a stop in Buffalo on November 4 on their Shadowglow tour. The fun-filled night at Buffalo Ironworks was kicked off in true alt music fashion with The Brazen Youth. They played well-known classics as well as their hit song, “Center of Gravity.” The group got the crowd even more hyped up with the obvious Buffalo crowd pleaser: a Bills chant.

When Flipturn took over the stage there was a shift in infectious energy and warmth. No matter how small or large the venue is, Flipturn always knows how to perform. There’re no limitations when this group takes over the stage. All that’s obvious is their connection with their fans. This band is built up by Dillon Basse (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Tristan Duncan (lead guitar), Madeline Jarman (bass), Mitch Fountain (synth), and Devon VonBalson (drums).

Flipturn opened up their set with “The Fall” and “Playground,” off of their most recent album Shadowglow. Even though this album was just released a few months ago, fans at Buffalo Ironworks knew the latest lyrics top to bottom.

Flipturn manages to take their listeners on a journey when they play their music. Through summer drives and youthful bliss, there’s something cinematic in the experience of a Flipturn song. This band has grown up together in Florida and now plays songs that deal with the heavily relatability at being at a crossroad between young lust and the pressures of adulthood.

The live experience only adds to the depth of their introspection between the head and the heart. This coalition Flipturn creates with their fans is one that is hard to pull away from. Even so, they closed out the night with fan favorites, “August,” and “Nickel.” It also happened to be Madeline’s birthday which was another layer of excitement for everyone.

Flipturn is continuing their tour and making another stop in NY at The Bowery Ballroom on November 9. They’re definitely a must see for indie/alt lovers!

Buffalo Ironworks has a lot of upcoming events including Nefesh Mountain on Novemebr 10 and Buku & G-Rex on Novemebr 11.

Setlist: The Fall, Playground, Chicago, Whales, Sad Disco, Halfway, Hippies, Six Below, Glistening, Goddamn, Take Care, Space Cowboy
    Encore: August, Nickel

  • Singer-Songwriter John Moreland Performs in Woodstock and Buffalo this Weekend

Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter John Moreland will grace audiences with his mesmerizing country sound this July. On July 23, the Oklahoma singer will promote his upcoming album, Birds in the Ceiling, at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock before traveling to Buffalo Iron Works on the 24. The Dead Tongues will join Moreland for both performances.

The singer’s upcoming album will be released on July 22, just a day before the show at Levon Helm Studios. Bird’s in the Ceiling is John Moreland’s sixth studio album, and some of his previous works, including LP5, and High on Tulsa Heat, garnered much positive attention from fans and critics alike. The pandemic prevented Moreland from touring for LP5, so his live performances are highly-anticipated and a long time coming.

    John Moreland album art

The imminent Birds in the Ceiling album, via Old Omens/Thirty Tigers, combines folk, retro-pop, rock, and roots with the foundations of Moreland’s strong sense of lyrical story-telling. The nine-track album gives listeners a glimpse into Moreland’s most recent thoughts and experiences. Singles off of the upcoming album were released earlier this year, including “Ugly Faces,” “Claim Your Prize,” and “Cheap Idols Dressed in Expensive Garbage,” all of which you can listen to below.

An artist known for his lyrics, much of Moreland’s music cuts deep. The reflective lyrics “does it even matter? does it ever last? / I didn’t want the answer to the question that I asked / Can I kill a monster? can I be a man? / I can’t afford to give a damn if you don’t understand” off of “Ugly Faces” lend a lonesome and introspective perspective.

With Moreland’s talented and accomplished guitar playing, emotional vocals, and combination of instrumentation, the live performances in NY this summer are sure to be memorable and captivating. For the Levon Helm Studio performance, tickets cost $30 or $45, and gates open at 6:30. The Buffalo Iron Works show begins at 8:00 pm with doors open at 7:00 pm and tickets cost $25.

Tickets for the upcoming shows at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock and Iron Works in Buffalo can be found with the link available here. To listen to some more of John Moreland’s work, see below.

annie in the water sun at dawn
Artwork by Tony Campono, based on a photograph taken by Matt Richards at dawn on Going To The Sun Road at Glacier National Park.

Recorded directly to tape at Artfarm Recording in the heart of the Hudson Valley and mixed by Corey Hayward, Sun at Dawn represents the band’s time spent independently at home, together in the Adirondacks, and on the road again with their fans.

Our forthcoming album Sun at Dawn represents the paths we took in life as individuals and how it brought us together in the band. The album consists of songs that were written along these separate life experiences and are joined by songs that were written together as a band. The sun at dawn illustrates that this is just the beginning of our adventures musically and as friends.

We have a lot planned for 2022. Beyond releasing our newest album we are lining up bigger tours than we have had in recent years. Not only that, but we have also began writing more new material after the recording process of the upcoming album ended. We are fully prepared to hit the ground running when the music scene begins to boom again and we can’t wait to show everyone everything we have been working on!…

Matt Richards, Annie in the Water keys

Annie in the Water’s sound has a groove filled combo of reggae, funk, rock, blues and jam, written with a conscious dose of positive vibes, unique melodies and intelligent lyrics. The group has the ability to fill an entire night with original music and also render well-known covers in their signature style, giving fans extraordinary experiences to share that can’t be seen anywhere else.

Comprised of members Brad Hester (Lead Vocals/Rhythm), Michael Lashomb (Lead Guitar/Vocals), Ryan Trumbull (Drums/Vocals), Chris Meier (Bass/Vocals), Matt Richards (Keys/Vocals) and Brock Kuca (Percussion/Vocals), each performance is another adventure, both exhilarating and everlasting.
