  • Chamber Music Society in NYC Creates Two-Part PBS Film

    The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in NYC closed its doors for two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, in a two-part PBS film Chamber Music Society Returns, the story of CMS’s return to live concerts is told. It will be airing nationally on April 8, and then on the 15th.

    CMS is one of eleven constituents of the largest performing arts complex in the world, the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. CMS brings the experience of great chamber music to more people than any other organization of its kind through its many performances, education, recording, digital, and broadcast activities.

    The PBS film will explore the passion for making music that pushed the CMS community forward. The film features behind-the-scenes footage at CMS’s rehearsal studios, offices, and backstage. Musicians will reveal their relief at finally leaving the pandemic, and long-awaited performances full of emotion, embrace, and tears of joy.

    The first part Setting the Stage features violinist Arnaud Sussmann, bassist Joseph Conyers, cellist David Finckel, and pianist Wu Han talking about how frightening the early stages of the pandemic were, and how music helped them during that difficult time. Viewers get to see the everyday work of chamber musicians, and see performances of both solo Bach and work from the opening night concert.

    The second part Bringing Down the House explores the aftermath of opening night, and the challenges of finding a way to safely gather over a dozen wind players to play as performing were considered risky early in the pandemic.

    CMS artistic director David Finckel spoke about why live music is special.

    Listening to a recording is like looking at a painting on a wall. It can be a great painting, but it doesn’t change. It’s always exactly the same. The live performance, though, is so far beyond the recording or the painting on the wall in that it’s like watching the artwork itself being recreated by the artist in front of your eyes in real time. Because live is always an interpretation. It’s never the same twice.

    The CMS PBS documentary will be airing on April 8 and 15, and the trailer is out now.

  • Bela Fleck “My Bluegrass Heart” Spring Tour Coming To New York this week

    Nominated in 2022 for Best Bluegrass Grammy, Béla Fleck hits the road on his GRAMMY winning album “My Bluegrass Heart” Spring Tour. Fleck will stop in New York on April 6th at the State Theatre of Ithaca, April 8th in Albany at The Egg, April 10th at the Patchogue Theatre and April 13th at Tarrytown Music Hall.

    After the sold-out shows at Carnegie Hall and the Ryman, Béla Fleck decided to extend his “My Bluegrass Heart” that will feature a variety of musicians.

    Béla Fleck’s title for his album, My Bluegrass Heart was inspired from the classic “My Spanish Heart” from Tony and Chick Corea who he decided to dedicate the album too. Although this is his third run of the tour, Béla Fleck continues to keep the tradition of sharing music between generations.

    “We’re reuniting the incredible first band—but with one change. Fiddler Stuart Duncan joins Sierra Hull, Justin Moses, Mark Schatz, Bryan Sutton and me. It’s time for the banjo player in the band to practice feverishly, because keeping up with this gang is no joke. It’s also one of the great joys!”

  • Gooseberry Drops Titular Song In Anticipation Of Debut EP “Broken Dance”

    In anticipation of their debut EP, Broken Dance, set to release on May 6th, Gooseberry has dropped the titular track of their forthcoming project. The Brooklyn band, consisting of Asa Daniels, Evin Rossington, Sam Rappaport, and Will Hammond, is slowly building an underground following.

    Recently, the band placed in the Final Four in NYSMusic’s March Madness 2022 bracket, and their newest release continues to highlight their talent.

    Gooseberry’s music is a magnificent blend of soulful R&B and indie-pop. Their newest release continues to showcase this amalgamation. The titularly titled track, “Broken Dance,” features a happy yet inquisitive piano roll. Accompanied by a melancholic violin and intimate lyricism, the track wonderfully captures the antonymic feelings of intimacy and loss.

    The four-piece talent will also be touring the American Northeast. In New York, they will return to the Bowery Electric on April 14th and to Brooklyn’s Knitting Factory on May 21st. Additionally, the band will also pass through the Finger Lakes region and will play at Grist Iron Brewing on June 11th.

  • Tate McRae Sells Out Two Nights at Irving Plaza

    Tate McRae has the feel of a natural born star. The 18-year-old Canadian born singer/dancer mesmerized on stage last Thursday, March 31st, at Irving Plaza, being backed by Mimi Webb and Gayle. Before her rise as a singer, McRae gained popularity for her performance on Canada’s, So You Think You Can Dance, at just 13-years-old so it later came as no surprise to find out she was multi-talented. She brought her myriad of talents to Irving Plaza, opening her show with her song, “stupid,” serving as the front-woman with two backup dancers on stage.

    Tate McRae not only has a strong stage presence, but a strong connection with fans, knowing when to switch gears to keep the concert flowing. She sat and slowed things down as she performed “One Day,” — the song that launched Tate’s singing career after putting out the song on Youtube a few years ago, going went viral almost overnight. At the show, McRae also announced her debut album, I used to think I could fly, set to release on May 27. The aesthetic was as vibrant as McRae’s voice itself, with strobing lights, dancing fans and flawless choreography. As her first headline tour, it’s apparent that McRae’s potential is limitless.

    Apart from her recent stretch of performances, McRae recently released a the single, “chaotic,” from her upcoming album. She will soon be heading to Europe later this month for two months before joining Shawn Mendes for his US tour in September.

  • First Ever David Bowie World Fan Convention Announced for June

    The David Bowie Glamour Fanzine and Sound City have come together to organize the first annual David Bowie World Fan Convention. From June 17th-19th, Bowie enthusiasts will have the opportunity to show their love for the iconic artist in Liverpool’s Mountford Hall.

    The unconventional convention will have a number of events and performances to keep fans entertained. Hula-hoop artist Natasha Moonshine will make an appearance, along with dancer Joshua Hubbard and performance artist Pretentious Dross. Drag artist Jonny Woo will serve as a host for the Bowie Ball events. Woo, owner of the London LGBTQ+ venue The Glory, is also a founding member of Glastonbury’s drag scene at NYC Downlow.

    The David Bowie Glamour Fanzine and Sound City have hand-picked the musical acts for the convention, with Bowie tribute band, Rebel Heroes, being the first group confirmed. DJs The MenWhoFell2Earth and Sonic Youtha will entice fans to come to the dance floor with Bowie deep cuts, familiar favorites and associated hits.

    There will also be an array of art installations and displays. Painter Shaun Lowndes will be exhibiting his surrealist, comic book inspired work, while ceramic artist Maria Primolan will be displaying her series of sculptures, each piece modeled after a different Bowie era. 

    Some of Bowie’s closest friends and collaborators will make appearances during the two day event. Influential image makers like Tim Bret-Day and Brian Duffy will answer fan questions and give insight into Bowie’s creative processes and life.

  • Albany Tulip Festival 2022 Lineup Announced, Featuring Taina Asili, Hanzolo, Parquet Courts, And More

    The City of Albany has announced the lineup for the 2022 Tulip Festival. It will take place on May 7 and 8 in Washington Park.

    The Tulip Festival is Albany’s signature spring event. It features over one hundred artisans selling their homemade crafts, a fine arts show, food, two stages of live entertainment, and more than 187,000 tulips in over 150 varieties.

    1:30p.m. – Bad Mothers: The dirty-rock band from Albany NY heralded for their consistently hard-hitting performances. Recently signed to Black Country Rock Media.

    4:30p.m. – Parquet Courts: Parquet Courts’ music is filled with thought-provoking rock. They are experimenting with electronic and psychedelic music to tell a story, while also maintaining uniqueness. Their newest work Symphony For Life falls on groovy dance music, rather than rhythm. The band is built largely from improvised jams, inspired by New York clubs, Primal Scream and Pink Floyd.

    1:00p.m. – Hanzolo: is a 7-piece band from Upstate New York, that have an explosive and emotional sound that mixes soul, jazz, rock, and funk. Their songs are danceable and fun, with thoughtful lyrics. They recently won NYS Music’s March Madness competition and have won the EQX Battle of Bands and opened Albany’s annual Pearlpalooza music festival.

    2:15p.m. – Canella: Canella brings a Latin spice to her indie folk-rock style. With some pop influences, her songwriting is full of intricate melodies that tell stories of existentialism and share intimate thoughts. Born and raised in Colombia but listening to 70’s and 90’s rock, Canella dove deeper into her solo songwriting career, utilizing her influences from former Albany local band Waitress, and implementing these elements into her more personal sound.

    3:30p.m. – B. Chaps and Freedom Stratton: Freedom Stratton does it all he’s a singer, dancer, actor and model! B. Chaps is from Albany, NY, and does hip hop/alternative music with jazz mixed in.

    4:45p.m. – E.R.I.E: came on to the Albany, NY scene in 2020. What began as a passion project developed while singer/songwriter TJ Foster was unexpectedly laid up in a hospital bed for three days, has turned into a fully-formed quartet, winning over audiences with their catchy songs and energetic live performances.

    1:30p.m. – Taina Asili: Taína Asili is a New York-based Puerto Rican singer, filmmaker and activist who carries on the traditions of her ancestors, taking past and present struggles into her music with a soulful and strong voice. Her songs have themes of hope and liberation, fusing with Afro-Latin, reggae, and rock genres. Asili’s music spans continents, and inspires audience at venues across the globe- from Carnegie Hall to the Women’s March on Washington to the main stage of San Francisco Pride. With an energetic horn section and infectious rhythms, Asili’s music urges people to get on their feet and dance to the rhythm of rebellion.

    4:45p.m. – Powerhouse Funk Band:  Combining R&B, neo soul, jazz, funk and everything in between, Powerhouse will have you dancing on your feet and feeling the good vibes deep in your soul. They play with a lot of emotion and soul, which gravitates fans to listen to them.

    1:00p.m. – Kyla Silk: R&B singer Kyla Silk has a soulful voice reminiscent of Carole King and Janis Joplin, as well as modern influences like Alicia Keys.

    2:15p.m. – SIDE – B: Four-piece alternative rock band from Upstate New York consisting of drummer Dylan Travison, bassist Eric Mitchell, guitarist AJ Horton, and vocalist Ian Justino.

    3:30p.m. – Kieran Rhodes: Kieran Rhodes is an accomplished performer, songwriter, pianist and vocalist. As a songwriter, he has released multiple songs under his name which can be found on all streaming platforms. Kieran also has experience writing songs for television. His most recent project being a co-writer on a song for The Food Network’s “Restaurant Impossible.”

    4:45p.m. – Playin’ with Fire: is a vibrant and powerful Performance Act capturing seamless tributes to every song that audiences love. Led by an irresistible, energetic female vocalist and dynamic male singer/guitarist, the band handles music from Rock, Pop, Country and Blues with astonishing accuracy. Crowd pleasing originals, harmonies and engaging personalities make the Playin’ with Fire Band a sure “fire” hit for any event. The 5 person band includes professional musicians (drums, bass, lead guitar) who have performed with major recording artists across the nation. 

  • Clannad Announces The Relaunch Of The Farewell Tour, Shows At Gramercy Theatre

    Grammy award-winning band, Clannad has announced the relaunch of their tour for 2022, The Farewell Tour. Clannad will make a pit stop at Gramercy Theatre in New York City on Thursday and Friday September 29th and 30th, 2022.

    Clannad released five successful and inspirational albums over a decade which led to their greater recognition as a band after collaborating with a three-part TV drama depicting the troubles in Northern Ireland for the show Harry’s Game in 1982 as there theme music composers. The song “Theme From Harry’s Game” hit number two in Ireland and number five in the UK, which won the band an Ivor Novello award.

    Their music appeared in soundtrack albums for documentary’s and a half hour animation The Angel and the Soldier Boy where only Clannad’s music played without any voiceovers that told the story perfectly. Clannad has also collaborate with a diverse range of artists such as Bruce Hornsby, Steve Perry, JD Souther, Paul Young, Duke Special and Bono of U2 which became the band’s most successful collaboration of their career to date.

  • Experimental Artist Federico Aubele releases new single “Old Spanish Films”

    Federico Aubele has released the second single “Old Spanish Films” from his upcoming album The Holographic Moon, out May 27.

    The song is about a relationship coming to an end after the two people acknowledge an inevitable incompatibility.  

    [It’s based] on the realization that a relationship I was in was built on projections, from both people in it, and didn’t have any real foundation.
    The end of the relationship was obviously sad. But in hindsight I can see that for the brief amount of time we were together we did give each other something valuable that we needed at the time, mostly companionship.

    His deep baritone and penchant for downtempo melancholy offer a rumination on things lost. His relationship may have ended but it didn’t lose its value. His signature vocals envelopes the acoustic guitar that glides through the track to create a sense of something lost but, nonetheless, appreciated.

    In a first for the Brooklyn based Argentine singer songwriter he also directed the video for “Old Spanish Films.” The Camcorder and Walkman in the video are meant to evoke a gone-by era of your life, to represent things that were once precious and now only their memory is.

    Aubele’s overt pursuit of experimentation may not be for all. But “Old Spanish Films” is worth a listen at least just to satisfy your curiosity.

  • Queens Band, The Forms Cover “Latch” by Disclosure

    Queens based band, The Forms, released a cover of “Latch” the popular Disclosure song featuring Sam Smith.

    “The core composition is so strong that the song would probably work in any format, but hopefully our un-electronic version will highlight what Disclosure and Sam Smith accomplished with their remarkable work,” said Alex Tween.

    In The Forms cover they swapped out the electronic production for the physical instruments featured in the song.

    Apart from Sam Smith’s voice and Disclosure’s harmonies, the original song was entirely composed of synthetic elements seemingly, so for our take we used all physical instruments (rhodes, hammond organ, piano, drums).”

    The group tried to reverse engineer the song and draw out its “weirdness”.

    “’Latch’ is definitely one of the weirdest and most complex songs ever to break through to the mainstream,” Tween said. “The chords are so strange and unique, the slow triplet rhythms virtually unheard of for a dance track, and the lyrics are so subtly subversive that it is truly an astonishing achievement that it made the Top 10.”

    The Forms is a two-person band composed of Tween, who plays piano, guitar, and provides vocals, and Matt Walsh. The two have known each other since high school. They released their debut album together back in Feb. 2003. The Forms are currently work on an album that will be released in 2022 with Steve Albini of Electrical Audio.

  • Chloe Sautereau Releases Newest Music Video “What If”

    New York based singer-songwriter Chloe Sautereau, also known by her stage name sautereau, released her newest music video “What If” on Friday, April 1. This song certainly sparks up that intriguing feeling of wanting more, whether that’s hitting it off with someone new to exploring your own city’s timeless treasures.

    Chloe Sautereau is a Swiss singer-songwriter from New York, currently studying Recorded Music at NYU. She is originally from Geneva, Switzerland, and goes by the stage name “sautereau.”

    After discovering a strong passion for music, sautereau started her musical journey at the age of eight. She would find this passion by writing songs and playing the guitar. Initially, her career began in 2019 under the name Cee, where she released her debut EP, “As I Keep on Dreaming.”

    She released her first single, “Conversation Hearts,” under the name sautereau in 2021. Thus, providing a fresh perspective of her as an artist.

    sautereau describes “what if” as “that moment you hit it off with someone for the first time and relive all those little memories that are crisp in your mind.” The song was produced by Chloé Sautereau and Toby May at Unagi Sound and was mixed and mastered by John Arbuckle at Cove City Studios, who also recorded the vocals on the track. 

    “what if” is an ode to feeling like you’re on the same wavelength as the person you’re with, more so than you thought you could be. It’s about evoking new experiences and discovery, but also an ode to New York City and its little wonders that we often overlook.

    Within this song, sautereau’s songwriting and storytelling capabilities shine through effortlessly. “What if” reminds us to stop and think of the endless possibilities that a situation can bring. Along with how these possibilities can impact our lives forever. She has a distinct talent for using her own experiences and making them relatable for her listeners.
