Members of the Rochester-based group are vocalist and guitarist, Sean McVay, bassist Dan Reynolds, and drummer Scott Donaldson. The band has released a total of four full-length EPs, “Acheron”, “The Burden of Restlessness”, “Dead Star”, “Longing to Be the Mountain” and “Orion”, since their formation in 2013 and most recently had their fifth full-length EP called “Regenerator” released on Sept. 2, 2022.

The album “Regenerator” is a pinnacle piece demonstrating a modern psychedelic sound production, while containing elements which stretch the stylistic boundaries of the underground rock genre. The band’s self release in North America and through the Europe-based company, Stickman Records, serves as a leading thematical counterpart to their prior projects, such as the 2016’s “Orion” debut, 2018’s “Longing to Be the Mountain”, as well as other EPs.

Drummer Scott Donaldson, discussed with NYS Music about King Buffalo and their most recently released album, Regenerator.

Heather Occhino: How did your band come together and what made you decide to be drummer?

Scott Donaldson: We formed from 2 bands from the Rochester area. As my band was breaking, so was Sean’s and Dan’s. I approached them about doing some stuff together and we had a natural chemistry, and have been rolling since then.

HO: How do you manage all the aspects of being in a band and still find time to make music?

SD: Being a musician and managing the day to day is a full time job. Fortunately, I’m able to handle the business side of things. When it comes to making music, we all jam together and form new some ideas. At this point, Sean will take the recordings and rearrange the ideas to form a more cohesive structure. Then we work through those ideas together until the song is complete.

HO: How you would you describe your music?

SD: We’re basically a new age classic rock band. We can be grouped into sub genres like psychedelic rock, stoner, metal, prog and so forth but we don’t really tie ourselves to any specific category.

HO: How were prior tour performances both in and outside of the U.S? Have you seen a growth in your listening base since then?

SD: We have seen significant growth since the pandemic in both Europe and North America. It’s nice to have some recognition since next year will be ten years as a band, but there is plenty more still to accomplish.

HO: Are there any artists who influence your sound or inspire you creatively?

SD: I think each of us are inspired daily by numerous influences. It’s impossible to pick any because anything can have a placebo that you might not even realize.

Tickets for the performance at Empire Underground can be bought here.

Additionally, The EP’s promotional single and music video “slap” sees Busta align with Big Daddy Kane and Conway The Machine. The song and music video alike are an ode to hip hop and New York City’s golden age. The production is reminiscent of the culture’s golden era, while the three emcees present themselves as powerful Don’s. Moreover, The Fuse is Lit can be another reminder that hip hop’s golden age is ever present.

  • Flipturn Brings Indie Back to Buffalo

Indie legends Flipturn made a stop in Buffalo on November 4 on their Shadowglow tour. The fun-filled night at Buffalo Ironworks was kicked off in true alt music fashion with The Brazen Youth. They played well-known classics as well as their hit song, “Center of Gravity.” The group got the crowd even more hyped up with the obvious Buffalo crowd pleaser: a Bills chant.

When Flipturn took over the stage there was a shift in infectious energy and warmth. No matter how small or large the venue is, Flipturn always knows how to perform. There’re no limitations when this group takes over the stage. All that’s obvious is their connection with their fans. This band is built up by Dillon Basse (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Tristan Duncan (lead guitar), Madeline Jarman (bass), Mitch Fountain (synth), and Devon VonBalson (drums).

Flipturn opened up their set with “The Fall” and “Playground,” off of their most recent album Shadowglow. Even though this album was just released a few months ago, fans at Buffalo Ironworks knew the latest lyrics top to bottom.

Flipturn manages to take their listeners on a journey when they play their music. Through summer drives and youthful bliss, there’s something cinematic in the experience of a Flipturn song. This band has grown up together in Florida and now plays songs that deal with the heavily relatability at being at a crossroad between young lust and the pressures of adulthood.

The live experience only adds to the depth of their introspection between the head and the heart. This coalition Flipturn creates with their fans is one that is hard to pull away from. Even so, they closed out the night with fan favorites, “August,” and “Nickel.” It also happened to be Madeline’s birthday which was another layer of excitement for everyone.

Flipturn is continuing their tour and making another stop in NY at The Bowery Ballroom on November 9. They’re definitely a must see for indie/alt lovers!

Buffalo Ironworks has a lot of upcoming events including Nefesh Mountain on Novemebr 10 and Buku & G-Rex on Novemebr 11.

Setlist: The Fall, Playground, Chicago, Whales, Sad Disco, Halfway, Hippies, Six Below, Glistening, Goddamn, Take Care, Space Cowboy

  • Steve Vai rolls through Rochester on his Inviolate Tour

The Kodak Center in Rochester on Friday, November 4th hosted the legendary Steve Vai. Playing this small city for the first time since he played at the same venue on the “Generation Axe” tour in 2018, this show was in support of his 2022 Inviolate album.

Steve Vai- Photo credit- Mike Miller

The band behind the sixty two year old Steve Vai hasn’t changed at all within the last nine years or so. Jeremy Colson on drums, Dave Weiner on guitar/sitar/acoustic has now added keys to his arsenal on the side of the stage, and rounded up by Philip Bynoe on six string bass guitar.

The beautiful venue had some tickets for sale at the door many fans were seen purchasing last minute. The lights dimmed down at the scheduled start time of 8pm, with a little call and response part while Steve was standing off to the side of the stage. He was getting the crowd to howl and sing along to the noises he was making with his trusty Ibanez Jem guitar, much like the start of the David Lee Roth classic
“Yankee Rose” with the talking guitar or like his mentor Joe Satriani’s crowd chant.

    Jeremy Colson

Steve finally walks onto the stage and after a little improv jam with the band then they immediately launch into a track called “Avalancha” from his new album. This is an upbeat number to kick off the show, lots of double bass drumming in this one with Jeremy attacking his Tama Starclassic drum set on this very melody driven song despite the rhythm shifts.

During the show Steve explained to the crowd he had to reschedule his tour due to an accident. He told the crowd he was making pizza in his pizza oven and injured his shoulder in the process. He thanked the crowd many times for attending as this venue was different than the originally scheduled one.

    Dave Weiner

In total Steve played twenty songs for about a two hour set time. Each band member was given a solo spot thought the show. Drummer Jeremy started his drum solo with a didgeridoo which the crowd did not expect, but welcomed.

During the song, “Teeth of the Hydra”, Vai played a three-necked Ibanez guitar. Which is a twelve string neck, a seven string neck, and a bass neck. During “For the Love of God” Vai brought out his audio monitor engineer Danny G who sang opera for the first verse and chorus. Vai is currently on tour for another month.

Setlist: Avalanche, Giant Balls of Gold, Little Pretty, Tender Surrender, Lights Are On, Candlepower, Bass solo, Building the Church, Guitar solo, Greenish Blues, Bad Horsie, I’m Becoming, Whisper a Prayer, Dyin’ Day, Drum solo, Teeth of the Hydra, Zeus in Chains, Liberty, For the Love of God
Encore: Fire Garden Suite I- Bull Whip

  • Five Must-See Shows in Rochester This November

The temps are cooling but the jams are just heating up and the longer nights just give us more time to rock out. Time to finish the first full “post-pandemic” year of live music strong. November is already well under way, but we still have some surefire live music picks and shows for you in Rochester.

November 8 – Sarah Shook and the Disarmers @ Abilene Bar and Lounge

First up is Sarah Shook, returning to Abilene for the first time since 2018, and after their show there this summer was postponed due to none other than that damn Covid. Touring behind their excellent 2022 release, Nightroamer, this North Carolina-based quintet muscles up honky tonk with a little rock and punk energy, or do they twang out their punk rock with a little honky tonk? Either way, you’re in for a barn-burning badass night of music.

Show starts at 8pm and tickets are $20/$25 dos.

November 12 – Lee Fields @ Photo City Music Hall

Last seen in Rochester mesmerizing the Rochester International Jazz Fest crowd at Harro East in 2013, Lee Fields finally returns this week. One of the best soul singers around, he recorded his first single back in 1969 and put out his latest album just last week, Sentimental Fool, his first for the vaunted Daptone Records label. He is anything but past his prime though, expect high energy on stage and off, grooves to get you moving and a voice that’ll hit you right in the sweet spot.

Show starts at 8p and tickets are $23.50.

November 17 – Another Michael, String Machine @ Bug Jar

A night of too-new-to-be-known indie music awaits. Two bands touring behind their 2022 releases are coming hungry to win your love. Another Michael is a tight Philadelphia-based band delivering hooky songs trending toward the folksier spectrum with breezy guitars and dreamy vocals. String Machine, a seven piece from the other side of Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, brings a fuller sound, what they call maximalist indie rock. They’ll be playing from their latest, Hallelujah Hell Yeah, which is an album of album of joy, vulnerability, and forgiveness. Catch them both at the Bug Jar, with local openers, *ahem* Bugcatcher.

Show starts at 9pm and tickets are $14-$18.

November 19 – Amy Helm @ Hart Theater

Another Covid-postponed show, Amy Helm was supposed to grace the Canalside Stage outside the JCC this summer. Now we get to enjoy her inside the intimate and acoustically-sound Hart Theater. An incredible voice singing her incredible songs, prepare to be melted and moved. The Woodstock native and daughter to the late-great Levon, Helm is an extra special treat to see live, an Americana treasure. Locals Jon Itkin and the Receivers will open the show.

Show starts at 7p and tickets are $40-$70.

    November 25-28 – Bop Shop’s 40th Anniversary Jazz Festival

Bop Shop Records has been celebrating their 40th anniversary all year, with the intention of hosting 40 shows in 2022. To see any music in this intimate environment among the stacks is a treat, but owner Tom Kohn has impeccable taste and brings in ridiculously good talent, so every show is pretty much cant-miss. Their busy November closes out with a 40th Anniversary Jazz Festival, four straight nights of high quality jazz to burn off those extra Thanksgiving calories.

Getting things started on Black Friday is Three Shamans, featuring Phil Haynes, Ken Filiano & Herb Robertson.

On Saturday, Joe Fiedler’s Open Sesame returns to take your Sesame Street favorites to places you never imagined.

Sunday night is Joe Fonda & Bass of Operation. Fonda has graced the Bop Shop stage more than any other artist. The reason for that is, he’s really freaking good!

Closing out the little festival on Monday is Michael Musillami Trio.

All shows start at 8pm and are $20. There is also a special four-show pass for $55.

  • In Focus: Hip-Hop Legend Rakim at Water Street Music Hall

Water Street Music Hall hosted a living legend when they brought in Rakim on Saturday, October 29.

Dating back to the late 1980s, there have been countless MCs making music and trying to earn their 15 seconds of fame. Among the best, according to people like Marley Marl, Dr. Dre, and Kool Moe Dee, was Rakim.

Rakim center stage in Rochester NY

Rakim burst onto the scene in 1985 as half of the duo Eric B. and Rakim and immediately gained praise and recognition as a skilled MC and lyricist. Working together until 1992, the duo released 4 studio albums, including the debut Paid in Full and their final album in 1992 Don’t Sweat the Technique, both of which were big sellers and remain highly regarded to this day.

Moving on to a solo career, Rakim released The 18th Letter in 1997 and is now touring as he celebrates the 25th anniversary of this lyrical masterpiece.

Setting up the crowd for Rakim was Rochester, NY based The Frank White Experience (Notorious B.I.G. tribute band) and Styles P., both of which were welcomed by the crowd. If you are a fan of Biggie, The Frank White Experience needs to be on your radar as they cover the late rapper with their own unique twist. Styles P played the crowd for about 45 minutes with some street style raps and eventually did a little freestyle set in the crowd.

  • Joe Satriani brings his Earth Tour to Babeville

It’s not without calculated risk that Joe Satriani can take his guitar to places that no other guitar has gone to before. That’s what makes his music and his shows so unique and extraordinary.  Sunday October 30th 2022, brought Joe Satriani and his band made a stop at Babeville in Buffalo. The venue is an old church turned into a beautiful concert hall.

    joe satriani
    Babeville

After two years off the road, and two full length albums released (2020’s Shapeshifting and 2022’s The Elephants Of Mars) , it was time for Satriani to return to the stage. For this tour titled “Earth Tour“, he’s put one of his best bands together. It features legendary session drummer Kenny Aronoff, bassist Bryan Beller (from Steve Vai and Dethklok), and keyboardist and guitarist Rai Thistlethwayte.

    joe satriani
    Joe Satriani

Most performers play all of their hits and little newer material, but Satriani played almost half of his songs from his past two albums. His new music is just as innovative and made for live performance as his more well-known songs. Given the fact that he’s playing only instrumental music, probably makes the blend a little more transparent.

    joe satriani

Visually, Satriani and Aronoff, are both bald and brandishing similar wraparound sunglasses, marked an intriguing contrast to longhairs Beller and Thistlethwayte. Together, they mesh like a band should, with the spotlight mainly on Satriani the whole night, both Aronoff and Thistlethwayte had their own featured solo segments. The drum solo kicked off the second set of music. The bassist Beller consistently rattled the walls with his chunky bass lines.

    joe satriani

The performance offered a full overview of Joe Satriani, where he’s been, where he’s at now, and where’s he going next. All of the musicians were at the top of their game and the crowd gave standing ovations many times during the show.

Follow the closure of the North Pole Strip Club (NPSC) house venue on Main Street, Felix Kellogg, Jake King and Liam Powers, the founders of the Foxhead label, talked with the owner of the space about their idea of launching DIY-shows. “Since we got to Fredonia, there was always live music going on”, explained King, “and it was always upperclassmen running it”.

He pointed out there being a need for people to organize shows and Liam Powers also added in a prior lack of places for shows to happen, following the the North Pole Strip Club closing. The recognition of a need for performance outlets in town led to the transition of the company from focusing on making cassettes for bands to extending their business, bringing live concerts at one of the most popular venues in Fredonia.
