The Battery in New York City announced its lineup for the River and Blues series on Thursdays in July at Wagner Park. Located at the southern tip of Manhattan Island, this event is set to featurre fabulous singers including Nicole Atkins, Eljuri, Cha Wa, Lady Wary, Cedric Burnside, and Maggie Rose to enjoy the summer sunsets.

The Battery, formerly known as Battery Park, is a 25-acre (10 ha) public park bounded by Battery Place on the north, State Street on the east, New York Harbor to the south, and the Hudson River to the west. The park contains attractions such as an early 19th century fort named Castle Clinton; multiple monuments; and the SeaGlass Carousel.

The New Orleans based Mardi Gras Indian funk band Cha Wa had an infectious music and stage show when they were nominated by Grammy. The name Cha Wa is a slang phrase used by Mardi Gras Indian tribes, meaning “we’re comin’ for ya” or “here we come.” Cha Wa has been described as “funk with feathers” – a sound rooted in traditional New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian music mixed with funk and soul, a non-stop groove machine.

Cedric Burnside, an American electric blues guitarist, drummer, singer and songwriter born into a prominent family of North Mississippi Hill Country legends. These sensibilities are reflected across his work and impeccably showcased on his 2022 GRAMMY™- winning release, I Be Trying. Burnside’s vocals, recorded in Willie Mitchell’s Royal Studios in Memphis, focus on romantic reverses and tenacious love with complete understanding.
Seekers and travelers, both aquatic and avian, endured a nauseating sense of moral conflict while making their way to see Goose on June 24th and 25th for the sold out Radio City Music Hall shows. News of the Dobbs Supreme Court ruling was fresh; strong introspective notes of guilt and grieving rang in battle with the plans for a most jovial gathering. Hurdles of planning jumped for months to make those nights happen. Travel high jumps cleared in the last hour. All of this legwork to prepare for two nights when we thought we could finally be animals and move our abdominals for a night, instead receiving news that life for women just got a whole lot scarier.

Goose’s cover of “Mad World” from the South Farms Halloween show played on repeat the whole drive down. A song which leaned into the darkness in the throws of pod-era guilt stricken live music attendance. It also was a song Doom Flamingo played later that night with powerhouse feminist badass Kanika Moore appropriately addressing this particular moment of darkness.
During moments of self-preservation and protection, the mind for some went to a strange place where the value of innocuous thoughts skyrocketed. Distraction in the form of social anxiety, primal desire to hunt for big game in the form of a limited release poster, and theories of potential setlists and sit-ins began to swarm the mind, blocking out any space for all-out panic about women living in those states.

Shock-driven imagination created a surreal mental image worthy of the “Weird Goose Dreams” facebook group. The line outside of Radio City before Connecticut Indie Groove band Goose played back to back sold out shows at Radio City Music Hall painted the sidewalks like the signs that once were held up only a few blocks away outside of MTVs TRL. Memories of pop-punk fandom long ago trailed while approaching. Opening conversations were mentally rehearsed. Would Dripfield have been hitting #1 on the hit music video countdown show if it were still airing today?

Why the rehearsals? The typical over-thinker would estimate that of the 6,000 guests, a core group of, say, 10% would be in attendance for every show. Another 20% will go to every run within a day’s driving distance. 30% will see every show where they can return home the same night. 20% could be first-timers and the remainder… It was complicated.

In a landscape of ever-changing risk, evolving life circumstance and financial whirlwinds, that percentage unaccounted for above could be dedicated fans, unable to attend for a solid chunk of time. Thankfully, they were able to continue to follow the band, only from the VIP view of the livestream and rode the rails of the coffee table with company of an active group chat. The poster line was more like reflexes with a Nintendo game, instead of the running of the bulls (or in this case, geese). The importance of a historic night for band and community might have inspired months of preparation in order to attend. The emotions of the prodigal children ran high.

Before crossing the street over to the line, all thoughts were immediately interrupted when a man standing with arms outstretched and body language that shouted, “Welcome!” and “I’m so glad you made it to the show!” Golden light poured over the massive Radio City Music Hall and line as far as the eye could see weaving behind. Scarf draped over the outstretched arms, the bit of fabric which has become a rock relic illuminated with vibrancy from the sun as it set behind.
The scarf danced and waved tirelessly during those early streams where the pods were spaced such that only two people from the crowd could be seen when Marta Goedde switched the cameras to the front of house viewpoint. A symbol of giving it all you’ve got to both thank the band for taking a risk during a dark time and to honor those that were not in a position to safely attend. A symbol of hope when we needed it most. A man whose outstretched arms and scarf draped, larger than life in front of the epic Radio City Music hall could only be described as “Scarf the Redeemer” washed away all doubts with a single hug. Radio City. Goose. Good News. Mood Boosted. Game on.

Familiar faces full from streams and memes were assembled at the front of the line, taking part in the sacrament known as the eucharist of glizzies. Why show up so early when there are assigned seats? The group up front at Radio City absolutely wanted a poster, but more importantly, value the time waiting on line for doors as part of the community experience. Hours of sharing and connecting before as well as mutual experience up front for every show has created an unbreakable bond and ritual that could not be forgotten, even if their ticket put them somewhere up in the three Mezzanines.

Stickers, baklava and pogs were passed around from arms draped in glistening sequin capes to ones with vibrant colors of one specific tie dye maker. Typically a sign on regional representation, these dyes transcend the regions and have been worn by community members hailing from an area much larger than their origins of Western New York.
The patterns on the dyes both thoughtful and ornate, evoked an unconscious mood boost because the coloring seemed to look exactly like the big looks from some most cherished moments from Goose shows past. The Blue Sky Dyes have been worn by members of Goose over the years which have been featured on streams played at home time and time again. Another mood boost.

Seven missed flights, one broken truck and a marriage proposal later, one couple finally made it to Radio City for the show. Another seated monk figure had converted his van to follow Goose. Coast to coast, Midwest to Southeast. Representations from across the country were assembled together. The mood was cohesive and upbeat.

Arriving inside Radio City Music Hall felt like time travel. Lounges, not bathrooms, all had unique mirrored constructions. Water fountains made with artistry that could not look like anything further than the industrial robot fill stations of today. The merch line spiraled down an oval staircase. The surreal feeling seemed to never end as memories of the Resonance set from a few years ago kept appearing when chatter began to spread about what potential this band had. Familiar faces, big long hugs and selfies galore could be witnessed throughout the halls as thousands of people poured into the venue. This was a powerful feeling at a powerful time.

The atmosphere differed tremendously depending on location of seating. Each quadrant held a distinctive personality. Under typical circumstance, a Goose crowd would often resemble that of a high school cafeteria. Same people riding the front rails. Tamara, Crepes and Val on Trevor side, Phil, John and Noah in the middle. Binky between Rick and Peter alongside the Carusos forever dedicated to “Pete side, sweet side.” At Radio City Music Hall, everyone was scattered throughout. Some were able to experience the light show for the first time, despite countless shows attended.

Orchestra: Elmegs and Empresses
In the Orchestra seating, there appeared to be a near checkerboard pattern of longtime family and friends mixed with first timers and socializers. Similarly dispersed were those that danced hard with those who would fall under a still, hypnotic trance. In the center of it all, fittingly, was the Goblin King. The “George Washington of hot guys in the jam scene,” according to Andy Frasco. Ryan Stasik was in attendance. “So hot right now,” someone whispered from nearby.

First Level Mezzanine: Animals
The first mezzanine was a different story. These bunch of animals danced hard and could be called rowdy. The view of the stage from the back rows could have been better, but it didn’t matter. Every person of every age sang each word as if it were a church hymn. It was discovered here that amidst a tumultuous emotional experience, it can be extremely healing to let all of that angst out with dance and shouting the words. Catharsis comes in the form of the silly and leaving egos at the door. Appropriately, this quadrant of the venue went all out bananas when Animals came on. Little did they know the amount of banana jokes that would be made after the following night.
A game the animals played was called “Guess When Goedde is in Charge!” The critters up in mezz 1 would try to spot moments when the lights matched what was happening musically and participants in the game would try to guess what they thought Goedde would say through the monitors to the band like a circus ring leader. “Again!” was the most common guess.

Second Level Mezzanine: Creatures
The second level was where true entrancement happened. A sensory experience where holding a prism, balloon while adorning 3D Glasses was common ground. The visceral reactions and empathy held by all. The bigger meaning was felt here. The growth of the band and its fanbase. The creature which grows when nourished and loved. When Trey came on, all bets were off and everyone beamed with excitement in celebration of the good news we all finally needed. Conversations afterword consisted of repeatedly exchanging the question “what the actual f?” back and forth to each other for the remainder of the night.
Mezzanine 3: Red Birds
Perched up above, the full view of the light show was quietly enjoyed by those that dedicated their night to doing everything possible to appreciate the small moments of beauty in life. The colorful moments viewed from a safe distance created a space for the Red Birds to begin to heal. In the most heartfelt performance of the new song “Red Bird,” dedication to all of the women struggling with the supreme court ruling. Caring, judgement free words were sang to the Red Birds up in Mezz 3, reminding the rest of the crowd of Peter’s assertion at the start of the run. Attendee Tony Vasile put it best,
“Red Bird was a necessary anthem for women’s rights tonight.”

Going Down To The Rock Dale
All in all, the two night of Goose at Radio City Music Hall were memorable because of the good news it brought. Everyone seemed to get exactly what they needed out of it and left feeling better than when they arrived. For good reason. Fans both streaming from home and in attendance were able to witness their favorite band live out their childhood fantasy. It does not get more proud mother goose than that. One proud parent in the crowd recalled an early rendition of Goose practicing every Friday night for three hours over the course of seven years before they all left for college. With the occasional Saturday and Sunday jam session peppered in, it is remarkable to see the result of dedication as well as a coming of age tale converging during two beautiful nights.

One Life To Live For
The spirit of the night was impactful for more than just bands and fans. The crew behind the scenes have all been friends with Goose for years. The amount of tears shed could fill buckets. It was not only a dream come true for the band to collaborate with Trey, or play this venue. Aspiring audio engineers, lighting designers and photographers dream of working Radio City Music Hall. To ice the cake with both musical and photographic heroes sent it over the edge into something that could once only be joked about as a “Weird Goose Dream” facebook group fantasy.

And The Sun Will Be Rising Soon
Beneath the brightly illuminated city lights and glowing marquee reading the words “Sold Out” and “Goose” common ground established between birds of a feather and fish in the sea. It turns out, they were all just animals. It was phenomenal. Finding an exit path through the boisterous carnival and second consumption of the eucharist of glizzies outside Radio City Music Hall, chirps of praise volleyed between friends old and new.
Glancing upward, the bright white points of St. Patricks cathedral glowed brightly as they peeked out from behind Rockefeller center. Like a scene from a movie, it all clicked. We have been here before. The face tingling sensation from Arcadia was felt this intensely only one other time during the Goosemas livestream performed atop Rockefeller Center amidst the throes of shutdown.

Alternative rock pioneers, the Pixies, have announced an intimate 4-date U.S. tour set to kick-off on October, 1. After being benched for nearly two years due to COVID, this set of performances will come on the heels of a massive global tour that begins in June. During that time, the Pixies will perform at a number of festivals throughout Europe, Asia and South America. Their return will be quickly followed by the September 30 release of their 8th studio album, Doggerel (BMG).
Their October run will see them perform at four intimate venues between California and New York. Beginning on October, 1 at SOMA and concluding on October, 5 at New York City’s Terminal 5 venue. As is the Pixies’ “standard,” the band will draw from their extensive catalogue to perform a different set every night. Attendees can expect the band to perform not only some of the most beloved Pixies songs, but also, new tracks from Doggerel.

Pixies have been acclaimed as the most influential, pioneering band of the late 80s alternative rock movement, having served as a major influence for bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, the Strokes, Weezer, and many more. The group has released seven studio albums including the Gold- certified Surfer Rosa, and the iconic Platinum, Doolittle.

Playwright James Rado, best-known as the co-author and lead actor in iconic, counter-culture Broadway musical, Hair, has passed away in a Manhattan hospital. His reported cause of death was cardiorespiratory arrest, said his publicist and longtime associate, Merle Frimark.
Born in Los Angeles and raised in Rochester, NY, Rado began his journey as a playwright and actor at the University of Maryland. He starred in a production of “Romeo and Juliet,” while acting and helping write several other plays. Thereafter, he spent two years in the U.S. navy before returning to D.C. for graduate study at the Catholic University of America. Following his studies, Rado made his way to New York City where he studied with acting coach Lee Strasberg and, in the early 1960s, formed a singing group called James and the Argyles.
Furthermore, Rado acted in numerous Broadway and off-broadway productions during this period — which included a part in Marathon ’33, and the original Broadway production of The Lion in Winter — but after meeting Gerome Ragni in 1964, his breakthrough would come during the counter-culture hippie bubble of the 1960’s. In a time of social and political unrest, James Rado and Gerome Ragni embraced the hippie ideals where race, sexuality and identity were merely options and not pre-determined.
The plot revolves a group of hippies called the “Tribe,” who are on a journey of self-discovery. Their leader, a sensitive young man named Claude, who grapples with his place in the world. He and the Tribe find their way while trying to escape the grasp of what they considered a flawed system. Between draft-card burnings, love-ins, bad LSD trips and a parade of protest marches, drugged-out hippies and outraged tourists who don’t approve of the world’s goings-on. Rado and Ragni wrote the the play’s dialogue and the song lyrics.
“We were very serious about studying these new theater techniques for the actor and the playwright. And we became aware of what was going on around us in the streets,” Rado said in a 2014 interview with Broadway World.
There [were] protest marches in the village and in the parks. There was this manifestation of this new person called the Hippie. We found so much excitement in the real world that we felt wasn’t experienced by your average theatergoing, Broadway audience. We thought that we could somehow take the excitement that we experienced ourselves, what we felt the Hippie thing was about, and that basic peace and love message that they were living and breathing, and bring that to the stage. We thought we could share our excitement and our experience, and I think we achieved that.
Hair won a Grammy in 1969 and was made into a hit-film in 1979. The Broadway show ran for nearly 2000 performances in both London and New York. Songs from Hair have been recorded by numerous artists, including Shirley Bassey, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross and Liza Minnelli.
After a split with Ragni in the early 1970’s, the duo reunited to co-write the audio movie, Sun and the musical, Jack Sound and His Dog Star. Despite not reaching the same success with other productions, Hair remains a seminal work that still resonates today. Subtitled as “The American Tribal Love Rock Musical,” hair presented same- sex kissing, a multiracial cast and nudity as every day happenings. While the values around identity and anti-war sentiments remain relevant.
James Rado was survived by his brother, he was 90-years-old.
George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic embarked on their One Nation Under A Groove tour on Wednesday, June 15 in Central Park’s Summerstage. Bands including Dopapod, The Motet, & Pimps of Joytime performed ahead of the legendary funk band, a part of Blue Note Jazz festival.
Dopapod played an incredible yet much shorter set than the excited fans were used to, but regardless it was a super tight set and the band all seemed hyped for their stacked summer tour.
Shira Elias stole the show when she joined in with The Motet and The Horn Section, all of them former members of Turkuaz, with Elias’ vocals and stage presence nothing short of amazing. As the show went on, the funk meter increased until it was finally time for P Funk who brought an intensely funky, fun, and freaky time.
Grammy-nominated artist Post Malone has announced a month-long, 33-city North American tour that will see him headline UBS Arena at Belmont Park on October, 9 and Madison Square Garden three nights later. The “Twelve Carat Tour” comes on the heels of Post Malone’s highly-anticipated fourth studio album, Twelve Carat Tootache.
Produced by LiveNation, the tour kicks-off on September, 10 in Omaha, NE and will see Post Malone perform throughout the Mid-West before heading East for a layover of performances. The “Sunflower” crooner will grace the stage at DC’s Capital One Arena, The Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, and Newark’s Prudential Center. Reggae icon Burning Spear will play at Capital One City Parks Foundation Summerstage in Central Park on August 25, their first NYC show in more than 10 years and final announced show of the summer.
A music-maker, community icon, educator and spiritual uplifter, Burning Spear has carried the torch of the political activist Marcus Garvey’s gospel, promoting self-determination and self-reliance for African descendants for over four decades, throughout 25 albums. Promoting messages of peace and love to all, through his complex lyricism and rhythms, Burning Spear is a lifelong touring musician and his return to the stage will be nothing short of monumental.
The reggae icon will perform in New York for his Fan Appreciation tour which sees the Grammy Award-winning artist return to the stage for the first time in more than five years, playing cities like San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle, DC, and more.
Burning Spear’s latest single “Mommy,” pays homage to the bold, powerful, minor-key reggae style that the icon helped pioneer in the 1970s and is the first standalone single from his upcoming album No Destroyer (TBD release date).

A Blues BBQ Festival at Hudson River Park’s Pier 76 (34th Street) this summer will kick off on August 13th from 12PM to 9PM, with performances scheduled to take place throughout the day. The riverfront performances will be hosted by Binky Griptite and featuring performances from Walter “Wolfman” Washington, Don Bryant, Bette Smith, Dwayne Dopsie & The Zydeco Hellraisers, and Jackie Venson.
Bule BBQ Festival at Hudson River Park
Hudson River Park, which extends from Chambers Street to 59th Street along Manhattan’s West Side, is the longest riverfront park in the United States. It facilitates skate parks, playgrounds, sports fields, gardens and nature exhibits, boating and maritime activities, art installations, and myriad year-round events that celebrate the diverse cultures and neighborhoods along its shores.
The Blues BBQ Festival is the longest-running free blues festival in the New York City metro-region since 1999. It runs four miles along the West Side, attracting over 17 million visits each year. Over the last two decades, over 100 musicians have entertained performances happened here.
During this incredible festival, various restaurants include blue Blue Smoke, Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, Jase’s BBQ, Kimchi Smoke, and Big Papa Smokem. They will provide incredible BBQs with different flavours to support the festival. Beverage companies participating will be Allagash, Bronx Brewery, Sunday Beer Lager, Archer Roose Rose and Sparkling White Wine and Two Robbers Hard Seltzer.
The musical lineup is designed to showcase the many interpretations and influences of the blues genre. The event will be hosted by Binky Griptite of The Dap-kings and will feature Brooklyn native Bette Smith, acclaimed Memphis-born singer-songwriter Don Bryant, “America’s Hottest Accordion” winner, Dwayne Dopsie, and his band, The Zydeco Hellraisers, recording artist Walter “Wolfman” Washington, and multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter Jackie Venson.
Ringo Starr, drummer for the Beatles, hit pause on his tour this month due to COVID-19 in his touring party. He has since rescheduled many of his dates, and kicks off the tour at Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts on Labor Day, Monday, September 5.
The All Starr Band includes bandmates Steve Lukather, Colin Hay, Warren Ham, Gregg Bissonette, Hamish Stuart and Edgar Winter. When the shows were canceled, Starr shared a statement that read, “We were having so much fun paying again and it was disappointing to have to stop. But we were able to reschedule these shows and add them to our Fall tour – and so as the song goes – I’ll see you in September! Peace and love, Ringo.”
The tour was originally planned to begin on May 27, 2022 at Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario, being the fifth time in Starr’s career where he has launched his tour from there. Seeing him live will be well anticipated by his fan base, considering the delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, nothing stopped him from committing to what he loves, releasing two EPs, Zoom In and Change The World to add onto his legendary catalog.
I can’t wait to get back out on the road and play. This is the longest I’ve been off the road in years up until 2020 I was touring every year with the All Starrs and I’ve really missed it. Making music in the studio has been great, and it certainly saved me during the pandemic, but nothing beats playing live with great musicians in front of an audience. I love my fans and they love me and it’s going to be wonderful to be peace and loving and playing for them again.

Not only is Starr a nine time Grammy Award winner, but has also been inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and received an Academy and Emmy Award for his commendable acting. His success does not end there, however. Starr has published 8 books and released 20 studio solo records. The pandemic was a minor set back, but after celebrating 30 years of touring with his All Starr Bands in 2019, he has never felt more ready to continue this journey.
While he’ll be starting very close to Eastern New York, this does mean his shows at CMAC and Beacon Theater look like they won’t be rescheduled just yet.
Regardless of Starr’s many accomplishments, at heart he will forever love being a drummer and the impact he has on rock music.

Madison Square Garden Entertainment announced today due to overwhelming demand that Billy Joel has added to his monthly residency at Madison Square Garden with a show on November 23. The concert will mark the musician’s 131st at The World’s Most Famous Arena.
Back in 2013, Joel was named Madison Square Garden’s first-ever franchise musician and began his record-breaking residency in January 2014. Since then, he has played one show every month at The Garden. The added November show will be the legendary musician’s 85th.
Having sold 150 million records over the past 25 years with 33 Top 40 hits, it is no wonder Joel continues to rank as one of the most popular entertainers around the world. With six Grammy awards, a Tony award, and many more honors, Joel is known for his accomplishments as a musician and humanitarian.
Tickets for the Billy Joel November show at MSG will be available for purchase by the general public beginning at 10:00 AM (ET) on Friday, June 24 via Ticketmaster. Tickets will also be available at the Madison Square Garden box office on Saturday, June 25. Prices range from $69.50 to $165.50.
