Phoebe Bridgers Reunion Tour 2022 to stop at BRIC in June

The infamous Phoebe Bridgers has announced her Reunion Tour for 2022, making a stop at the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival at Prospect Park Bandshell. Known for her folk-adjacent and edgy music, her aesthetics, and her female strength, Bridgers is one of the most exciting new talents to have emerged within recent years.

Bridgers has bad a busy 2021, with 4 GRAMMY nominations, multiple late night TV performances including a smashing debut on Saturday Night Live. Additionally, she had a sold out Fall tour, two songs for charity (“That Funny Feeling” and “Day After Tomorrow”) and collaborations with Taylor Swift, The Killers, Paul McCartney, Metallica and more.

Most recently, Bridgers revealed plans for her own monthly radio show titled Saddest Factory Radio on Sirius XMU. Currently, she is getting ready to go back on the road taking her newest album, Punisher, to her fans across the United States and Canada, as well as to the UK and Europe.

Additionally, the Phoebe Bridgers North American run of the Reunion Tour includes a slew of dates April to August – and makes stops in Atlanta, Washington D.C., Brooklyn, Seattle.

The Microphones Take Their Fans to Church

Indie legends The Microphones played a late night set last Tuesday (March 8, 2022) at St. Ann and the Holy Trinity Church. The venue is known for having hosted other indie favorites such as Nick Cave and Sonic Youth throughout the years.

Emily Sprague opened the show with a warm acoustic set consisting of five songs. Her songs’ themes of death and darkness contrasted with the bright personality that came through when she briefly thanked the audience in the middle and end of her set.

Microphones’ Phil Elverum and Jay Blackinton took the stage to applause from the crowded pews, the dim lighting and quiet atmosphere lulling the audience into a quiet state. You could hear shifting seats and the creak of the historic church flooring before they began their set. They laughed and thanked the crowd before beginning their set, commenting on the awkwardness of standing on stage before the songs begin playing.

They played just one song, their 45 minute track “Microphones in 2020,” a semi-biographical two-chord meditation on their career which released in 2020 after a near 17 year absence for the band. By the time their set finished, the crowd almost looked dazed. It took a minute for the audience to realize the show had ended, and they gave a standing ovation and hearty cheers as Phil and Jay exited the stage.

Brooklyn Artist Becca Stevens releases first single “45 Bucks” off upcoming album

GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter Becca Stevens and GRAMMY Award-winning Attacca Quartet announce their collaborate album, Becca Stevens | Attacca Quartet will drop April 22nd. The first song off the collaborative album, “45 Bucks” along with accompanying live performance video are out now.

The album’s track-list reflects Becca’s journey and growth as an artist. Ready for the challenge, Attacca joined Stevens decade’s worth of music that continues to prove her music capabilities. The tracklist consist of 14 songs with arrangements from Liam Robinson, Bill Stevens (Becca’s brother), Stephen Prutsman, Becca Stevens, William Stevens (Becca’s father), Michael Ippolito, and Nathan Schram.

The song started as an attempt to ‘take the high road’ by putting frustrations to music rather than escalating a no-win situation with a next-door neighbor, and evolved into an ode to several folks who have let me down throughout my life.

A Brooklyn-based artist, Stevens established a career back in 2013 with pianist, composer, and conductor Steven Prutsman who sparked the idea of initial string arrangement. The Attacca Quartet is filled with stylistic versatility that arranges perfectly with Becca who’s inspiration comes from pop, jazz, indie-rick, and Appalachian folk music.

Becca’s 2020 “Wonderbloom” album landed the artist her first GRAMMY-nomination and Attacca’s first GRAMMY Award-win in 2019 with their album “Orange.”

Savak, A Brooklyn Post-Punk Quartet, Release “Empathy”

SAVAK have shared their newest track “Empathy” from their upcoming fifth album, Human Error / Human Delight, which releases on April 15, 2022. “Empathy” debuted via New Noise Magazine, who contemplated “SAVAK’s fascination with the balanced, and sometimes polarizing, nature of being alive.”

The Brooklyn Post-Punk Quartet have also added to their upcoming run of U.S. 2022 tour dates, visiting places in Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC and more. In addition, performing with the band Jawbox, see below for the full list of currently announced dates. The band wrote and recorded Human Error / Human Delight completely over Zoom, having crafted an honest album on living in our present moment.

SAVAK consists of Sohrab Habibion and Michael Jaworski, with Matt Schulz on drums. Additionally, Habibion and Jaworrski both share singing and songwriting duties since the band’s creation in 2015. Though SAVAK’s members have done time in bands like Obits, Edsel, Holy Fuck and more, their current position is the best in which they have been.

On The Radar – Underoath Heading to Brooklyn on Voyeurist Tour

Metalcore and screamo titans Underoath are currently on tour supporting their ninth LP Voyeurist. Since hitting the road in early February, the Voyeruist North American Tour has been making stops along the west coast but on March 17th the band will make their way to Bushwick’s Brooklyn Steel. The gig will mark Underoath’s first New York show since playing The Saratoga PAC back in August of 2019. Support on these shows comes from the newly formed Canadian metalcore band Spiritbox, and recently Stray from the Path and Bad Omens have been added to the bill. Find the full tour details HERE.

Underoath took a new approach to the album process on Voyeurist, their second album from Fearless Records. The band self-recorded the entire record with collaborator and engineer JJ Revel. Referring to the album as “high-def violence” Underoath utilize modern technology and recording techniques while still harnessing the energy from the band’s raw, chaotic metalcore style. Every track on Voyeurist pays homage to the band’s distinct sound while coming through the speakers as sharp as ever. Check out the official video for lead single “Damn Excuses” below.

The bill is rounded out by fellow screamo veterans Stray from the Path and relative new comers Bad Omens and Spiritbox. Bad Omens have just released their third LP (all on Sumerian Records) The Death of Peace of Mind last Friday, February 25th and Spiritbox is also supporting their last album Eternal Blue, released last September on Rise Records. Spiritbox is led by the incredible vocalist Courtney LaPlante of Iwrestledabearonce fame. The Voyeurist tour has put together a terrific lineup showcasing the legacy and future of metalcore in one night.

Gooseberry Releases Melancholic Yet Electrifying Single: “Sleep”

Gooseberry show a ton of promise. The four-piece band met through the Brooklyn music scene and consists of Asa Daniels on guitar and vocals, Evin Rossington on drums, Sam Rappaport on keys and vocals, and Will Hammond on bass.

The band has played in classic venues across the city like The Bowery Electric and The Knitting Factory. They have also written and released several singles since they were formed in 2019. The synthesis of these factors have allowed Gooseberry to develop a definitive sound and a deep sense of confidence in their delivery.

This confidence reigns through on their newest indie release, “Sleep,” which highlights their potential. Much like “Come A Little Closer” from Cage The Elephant, the track has a soulful body over which a whimsical battle between melancholic vocals and electrifyingly chaotic breakdowns occurs. The sum of these genre-bending characteristics all equates to an indie culmination of sonic mastery.

The band blends and switches between sounds with such grace, you would think the four had been playing together for years. However, quite the opposite reigns true. Although the band has only been together for two and half years, they play like they have a decade under their belt. With that being said, “Sleep” is sure to become an underground indie classic and a staple piece in the band’s discography.

In association with the single’s release, the band has announced the release date for their debut EP, Broken Dance, which is set to release May 6th. So long as the contents on the EP are a fraction of what the band displayed on “Sleep,” it is sure to be a banger.

Hippo Campus Stretch out ‘LP3’ at Brooklyn Steel

Indie rockers and St. Paul, Minnesota natives Hippo Campus stopped at Brooklyn Steel Tuesday, March 1st, for their first of two concerts in the city. The tour is fresh off the release of the band’s new album LP3, featuring the popular singles “Ride or Die” and “Semi Pro.” The band harnesses a classic indie rock base and adds embellished horns and a cheeky vocal and lyric style.

Hippo Campus made the long trip across the East River for a second gig at Webster Hall on Wednesday night. Support is being provided by San Diego native and rising indie-pop sensation Jelani Aryeh. Providing a perfect complement to Hippo Campus, Jelani Aryeh mixes a breezy R&B vocal style with electro-pop instrumentals. Despite playing with a new band, they perform with the chemistry of a longstanding group. The band is gaining momentum so quickly that Jelani joked on stage that they are “trying out a different band name every night” until they find one that sticks. While unfamiliar with the group prior to the show, the hard hitting jams and outros left a stinging impression on us and the rest of the crowd. Many fans made sure to grab a shirt and record from the surging young artist.

Hippo Campus released their first two LPs back in 2017 and 2018. After a short turned extended break due to the pandemic, the band returned in February with their third effort. LP3 is the band’s first album on Grand Jury Records and sees the group making strides in their production and album development. The 10-track album spans a concise 33 minutes but packs in indie rock bangers, soulful ballads, and crowd pleasing sing alongs. Fans filled out two sold-out NYC shows and most of the remaining tour is sold out.

The Hippo Campus tour is in the final phase. Beginning in early February around the release of LP3, shows are scheduled through the middle of March. There is one more New York stop on the run, over at Buffalo’s Town Ballroom with support coming from Boyish. Tickets are still available for this show. Hearing Aide : Christian Linsey ‘New English’

Christian Linsey has returned with his second LP, New English, released on February 22. Linsey is also the drummer for indie rock group, FRANK.

New English is a lo-fi, slacker pop dream, full of mellow vocals and sentimental lyrics. In contrast to Linsey’s 2016 LP After All, which focused on his personal loss, his newest project situates itself as a spiritual rebound. With themes of love, depression and mortality it’s easy to see that Linsey has learned how to accept the good with the bad. The record seems to be a reflection of the changes that have occurred in his life.

‘Lunchroom’ gives the LP a soothing start with strong guitars welcoming you in before Linsey’s gentle vocals croon about high school memories. While the song is only two minutes and forty seconds, it doesn’t waste any time setting up the vibe for the rest of the project.

‘In the Park’ dives deeper with its’ melancholic tone and low key instrumental. The drums maintain a steady base for the rest of the song to flourish on. The calming track is perfect for a rainy, late night listen.

‘Kids’ tackles the moment in time where you ruminate on an old childhood memory and finally move on from it. The surprise appearance of female backing vocals adds an extra layer of texture that brings everything together.

In addition to Linsey’s own unique sound, he also had guest artists appear on the project, including his trusted collaborators Joe Rogers, Pat Malone and Billy Ziff. Fresh faces like J57, Elenor Norton and Tory Giardina also make appearances within the instrumentals and vocals.

Japan Society To Host Shomyo Buddhist Ritual Chant Shows

Beginning February, Thursday the 24th and through February, Sunday the 27th, Shomyo Buddhist Ritual Chant: Spiral Mandala Ceremony will take place at Japan Society.

Japan Society was initially formed in 1907 to promote relations between the US and Japan. Since then, it has transformed into a metropolitan epicenter for the promotion of Japanese arts and culture throughout NYC. Due to social distancing guidelines, the event will take place over 12 different shows, with a maximum of 30 seats per show.

The event will be a deeply immersive theatrical experience. Audience members will sit on cushions placed on the stage floor and listen to shomyo, a ritual form of a Buddhist chant that is believed to have originated in India. After traveling through the Silk Road the ancient form made its way to Japan, where it has been practiced ever since.

Shomyo no Kai—Voices of a Thousand Years, a group of two dozen priests, will be performing Yu Kuwabara’s shomyo piece “Spiral Mandala Ceremony”. Alongside Shomyo no Kai, Brooklyn-based media designer Tei Blow will deliver stunningly hypnotizing visuals. The three parties in synthesis will create a sensory experience not worth missing.

Karina Rykman Spring Tour Includes Brooklyn Bowl and Lark Hall Stops

On Thursday, February 24, bassist Karina Rykman will embark on the last show of her Winter Tour at Brooklyn Bowl, with Boston band Neighbor opening the night.

She’ll then look ahead to March when she heads out on a cross-country tour for most of March, opening for Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. In April she’ll be on the road with Too Many Zooz, including an appearance at Lark Hall on April 23.

Rykman also plays bass with Marco Benevento, taking the role from JRAD and Ween bassist Dave Dreiwitz, and building a name for herself over the past few years. Whether she is soundchecking iwth Phish at Madison Square Garden, playing in the backing band on America’s Got Talent (in front of Howard Stern and co. at Radio City Music Hall), playing with Everyone Orchestra, or forming her own band, Karina is a force in the New York City jam scene, and beyond.
