  • Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams Announce new Album, Woodstock Stop

Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams announced their long-awaited album Live At Levon’s! will be released on Feb. 3. They have also announced a tour with stops in Tarrytown, Poughkeepsie, and Woodstock.

    Larry Campbell

Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams returned to their Woodstock home in 2019 to create the record, after a long year of touring. They recorded it at Levon Helm Studios, a historic and dual-purposed recording studio and live music venue founded by the legendary Levon Helm. The duo played multiple shows there with the Midnight Ramble Band, fronted by Helm with whom Campbell served as a bandleader for over a decade.

The album was supposed to be released in 2020 after a live performance was recorded at the studio with their musician friends. Of course, the pandemic stopped that from happening, and Campbell ended up catching COVID in March 2020. With all that aside, they are ready to perform and get back into touring.

I’ll never forget the first time I experienced performing as a child and knew my lot in life was set. The only reason I am a singer is because of the indefinable spark that happens with the giving and receiving of your most intimate selves, back and forth, between the artist on stage and the audience there in the room. If I can’t see the audience because of lighting, it almost becomes even more spiritual, because it’s all just feeling them—us together in the moment. And each performance/audience has its own personality. If you can drop the thinking and just ‘be’ with them and this sharing of your most intimate selves, there’s no describing the transcendence.

    Teresa Williams

The record Live At Levon’s! puts Campbell’s world-class guitar skills on display, and shows his songwriting capabilities. William’s vocals provide raw honesty and her trademark fragility and ferocity. Their new single “Angel of Darkness” is out today.

Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams are also going on tour, and are hitting Tarrytown on Nov. 18, Poughkeepsie on Nov. 19, and a special performance at the Levon Helm Studios where they recorded the album in Woodstock on April 22. Their brand-new album is available for preorder here and to purchase tickets to their tour go here.

  • Joanie Leeds and Fyütch are Redefining Christmas Music

Yes, it’s only October, and yes the high in Syracuse today was in the 60s, but some might say it’s never too early for Christmas music. On October 21, NYC-based Grammy winner Joanie Leeds and Grammy-nominated Fyütch released their first original song, “Every Day’s a Holiday.” The two released the song with an accompanying music video in advance of their holiday music project, Oy Vey! Another Christmas Album, releasing on November 4.

    Joanie Leeds Fyütch Christmas

When Joanie Leeds discovered that most of our most-loved Christmas songs were written by Jewish people, it was particularly inspiring to her as a Jewish singer much lauded for her songwriting prowess — in addition to her Grammy, Leeds claimed first in the USA Songwriting competition and International Songwriting Competition as well as finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting competition.

Leeds was moved by the dichotomous spirit behind those Christmas tunes and thought the perfect way to honor the work of their original Jewish songwriters was through continuing their practice; so she started writing her own holiday music. The upcoming album will feature four covers of classic Christmas songs written by Jewish songwriters and two originals, co-written with Fyütch.

Though it feels early for Christmas, this new angle on the holiday season couldn’t come sooner, with Ye’s recent interviews and tweets that spread anti-semitic rhetoric to an avid audience of music devotees.

“I love our contribution to the holiday season and was excited to share my passion project with the world and write some new ones too, especially as anti-Semitism is on the rise,” Reeds said.

“Every Day’s A Holiday” is a fresh and fun take on a traditional Christmas song. It retains the classic choral sounds of the classics, but with a twist: it’s not just a Christmas song, it’s a song dedicated to all holidays. In “Every Day’s A Holiday,” Christmas trees, dreidels, thanksgiving turkeys, fireworks, easter eggs all exist in musical harmony. The video itself is campy and engaging, with Leeds and Fyütch dancing around each other, with props and instruments as cartoon holiday animations flash over the green screen behind them.

The album will be out November 4, and you can stream the single here and watch the video below.

  • NY Rapper Dylan Owen Produces and Scores Film Pairing for Album

How To Find Yourself is a new film produced by rapper Dylan Owen and directed by Brian Petchers. In it, the two try to answer that very question by following teens through those familiar coming of age film tropes: traipsing through wheat fields, impromptu fight clubs, screaming for joy on a roof in slow motion, motorcyling through back alleys. The characters speak over those portraits of adolescence in interviews — airing the regrets, joys and discoveries their juvenile years brought them.

And playing underneath it all is a heartfelt acoustic score by Dylan Owen, of the same name, made for the film and featured on the artist’s upcoming EP, Take Care Of Yourself.

    Dylan Owen

Dylan Owen found himself moving all around Upstate NY as he grew up. He’s from Orange County, NY, and has lived in Goshen, Middletown, Circleville and Chester; Owen now calls himself proudly a “nowhere kid from a nowhere town.” Now living in NYC, Dylan Owen’s poetic songwriting and sensitive style has found him a wider audience and prompted comparisons to icons such as Mac Miller and Wiz Khalifa. How to Find Yourself is Owen’s foray into film making, and fans who know of Topaz Jones’ short film – that paired with his album Don’t Go Tellin Your Momma which looks at Jones’ own upbringing in Montclair, NJ – will connect with Owen’s film.

Through the testimonies from the film’s characters and the emotionally evoking scenes of innocence juxtaposed with violence and sudden danger, the film creates a space for people to openly share their stories of growing up, with an emphasis on those working through mental health problems. How to Find Yourself focuses on the harrowing journey to love and know other people and yourself while working through obstacles of anxiety and depression.

The short film will be released on October 25, and Owen’s album will be out in November.

  • Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp take on UPAC

On Thursday, October 13, Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp brought their collective talents to the Ulster Performing Arts Center.  Musical compadres dating back to 2017, this stop was part of a North American tour offering support for their recently released collaborative album, 18

Even though this event was promoted as Beck/Depp, the night belonged to the guitar mastery of Jeff Beck.  At 78, this fifty-year musical veteran backed his Rolling Stone magazine ranking of fifth in the list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” with his performance.

The multiplicity of tones poured freely from Beck’s guitar.  Was it with a whammy bar, created by a hammer on, maybe the use of a slide?  It did not matter.  Each style illuminated this master’s extraordinary style and ability.

Supporting Jeff in the rhythm section were bassist Rhonda Smith and drummer Anika Nilles.  The power behind their playing could be felt as it hit you in your seats.  Keyboardist Robert Stevenson added accents to the music in all the right places and completed the trio behind Beck.

Approximately two thirds of the way into the show, Jeff Beck turn to the side of the stage, put his hands in the air, and started bowing.  Out from the shadows strutted Johnny Depp.  With his rock ‘n roll swagger and electric guitar strapped on you knew he was ready to rock.

With Beck being  rooted in instrumentals, Depp’s vocals added another dimension to finish out the night. The two collaborated on a mix of tunes including covers of the Beatles and The Velvet Underground.  The night wrapped up with a powerful rendition of Killing Joke’s “The Death and Resurrection Show.”

  • In Focus: The Felice County Fair at Arrowood Farms

The Felice Brothers hosted The Felice County Fair on Saturday, October 1.  Set on a crisp, fall day at the picturesque Arrowood Farms Brewery in Accord, NY, the event featured a day of musical acts and collaborations.

Felice County Fair at Arrowood Farms
The Felice Brothers @ The Felice County Fair

The fair served as a sort of homecoming celebration for The Felice Brothers, who hail from nearby Palenville, NY.  The band, made up of siblings Ian (vocals and guitar) and James Felice (vocals, keyboard, accordion), also includes Jesske Hume (bass guitar) and William Lawrence (drums) was concluding a long tour in support of their latest album, From Dreams to Dust (2021).

The day of music kicked off with a solo acoustic set by Will Lawrence. Lawrence delivered a quick solo set, featuring acoustic ballads off his first solo album, Through the Hollow Hills.  Lawrence, who played the acoustic guitar and kick drum, was an appropriate act to start the day.

Al Olender @ The Felice County Fair

Up next was Al Olender, who dazzled the crowd with her powerful vocals and charismatic stage presence.  Flanked by a full band,  Olender was also joined by James Felice for several songs.  Quite simply, Olender sings about life.  She delivered passionate and honest lyrics to songs dealing with the realities of a harsh break up, the death of a close family member, and life during a pandemic.  By the end of her set, the crowd was fully engaged.

The music continued with individual sets by Haley Heynderickx, Evan Stephens Hall (Pine Grove), and Hooray For the Riff Raff.  As the day progressed, the collaborations became more plentiful.  The Felice Brothers served as the backing band for songs with Stephens Hall and Hurray for the Riff Raff.  Conor Oberst joined the fun, playing the kazoo with Stephens Hall.  Even Ian Felice’s son joined on stage at one point, banging a toy drum.

Finally, it was time for The Felice Brothers.  As the band took the stage, James Felice proudly proclaimed the festival had sold out.  It was a well-deserved accomplishment for a band that has earned a loyal and devoted following after almost two decades of touring.  The band launched into their opening track, the catchy “Jazz on the Autobahn.”  Crowd participation was at high at this point, as the audience joined in, singing and dancing along with the band.

Brothers Simone and Ian Felice embrace @ The Felice County Fair

On a day filled with special moments, perhaps the crowning moment occurred halfway through The Felice Brothers set when the band brought Simone Felice to the stage.  Simone, a founding member, left the band in 2009 due to medical issues.  It was clearly evident on the brothers’ faces how special this moment was.  With Simone in tow, the band closed their set with several early-era Felice Brothers favorites, including “The Devil is Real” and “Whiskey in my Whiskey” before closing their set with “White Limo.”

Felice County Fair at Arrowood Farms
Conor Oberst @ The Felice County Fair

The night was not over yet, as the fair closed with headliner Conor Oberst.  Oberst, most known for his work with Bright Eyes, filled his set with tracks from his various solo albums.  He was backed again by The Felice Brothers, who have served as Oberst’s backing band for serval tours, as well as his most recent solo offering, Salutations (2016).  As the set neared a close, Oberst summoned all of the day’s performers to the stage, before closing with the Bill Withers classic “Lean On Me.”  It was a fitting end to a wonderful day of music and collaboration.
