  • Greensky Bluegrass and Infamous Stringdusters Kick Off Winter Tour In Albany at the Palace Theatre

Thursday, January 20 marked the return of Greensky Bluegrass and The Infamous Stringdusters to the Capital District, with a performance at the Palace Theatre that kept the audience warm and cozy from the frigid temperatures outside.

Greensky Bluegrass returned nearly two years after their last Albany performance, that time at The Egg with Ghost Light, and after a bit of a wait, they were back to kick off their Winter Tour ahead of the release of their new album, Stress Dreams.

Opening up the show were The Infamous Stringdusters, recently nominated for a Grammy for their Bill Monroe tribute album. They kicked off the show with “Rise Sun” off their 2019 album of the same name, and negotiated a very brief power outage, never missing a beat. The band took a few opportunities to comment on how long it’s been since they’ve seen each other, how good it feels playing live, and how much fun they were having.

Dobro player Andy Hall, a native of Binghamton spoke to Forbes this past week, recalling his view of his hometown:

The Binghamton area is beautiful — rolling hills, forests and lots of medium-size towns. Not a lot is happening there, but there are lots of colleges in the area, it was a great place to grow up and there were awesome down-to-earth people. I used to have a somewhat negative view of my hometown, but I think that just went along with the urge to escape and see the world. I went back recently to receive a distinguished alumni award from my high school and was really impressed with what they have going on with music and theater. It changed my view of my old high school for the better!

    Andy Hall

The nearly hour-long set from Stringdusters included covers of the Grateful Dead’s “Touch of Grey” and The Police’s “Walking on the Moon,” as well as “Colorado” and “Sirens,” with the appreciative Albany crowd grooving along. Earlier in the day, the band released “I Didn’t Know” off their upcoming album, The Fray.  Listen to the full show below:

Returning to the Palace Theatre stage for the third time, Greensky Bluegrass celebrated the pending release of Stress Dreams, which was released 30 minutes after the band took their final bows. Songs from the album, included the catchy “New and Improved,” “Monument” and “Worry For You,” which had its live debut this evening. Greensky Mandolinist Paul Hoffman noted early in the first set, “We made a plan to play this show a long time ago with the Infamous Stringdusters, and so far the plan is working.”

A rarer tune, “Bont’s Breakdown” was performed for only the fourth time in the last 12 years, with fan favorites “Go it Alone” and “Living Over” closing out the first set with a 1-2 punch.

A new arrangement of “Old Barns” led to one of the top jams of the night, with the visually explosive light show from Andrew Lincoln offering the perfect dose of psychedelic luminescence to layer over the band. “Take Cover” and “Tarpology” both left plenty of room for improvisation, entrancing the audience as they filled every minute. The show concluded with another Stress Dreams track, “Until I Sing,” with the audience praising the band one last time before heading out into the bitter winter night, a little warmer thanks to The Infamous Stringdusters and Greensky Bluegrass. • This Week’s EQXposure Features North Side Sound, The Grandstand Jockeys, River Costa And More

Each Sunday evening from 7-9pm you’ll find EQXposure on WEQX, featuring two hours of local music from up and coming artists. Tune into WEQX.com this Sunday night to hear new music from North Side Sound, The Grandstand Jockeys, River Costa, and many more!

    North Side Sound

WEQX has long been the preeminent independent station in the Capital Region of New York, broadcasting from Southern VT to an ever-expanding listening audience. NYS Music brings you a preview of artists to discover each week, just a taste of the talent waiting to be discovered by fans like you.

    North Side Sound

Four-piece Albany band North Side Sound is gearing up to release their EP, Take My Time, on January 28. It’s unclear whether they’ll be on the project, but in 2021 they released singles “Five” and “Dive Deep.” The former centers around an upbeat guitar riff, with hints of reggae not unlike No Doubt. The latter is mellow for most of its runtime, before exploding in its final third.

    The Grandstand Jockeys

Hailing from Waterford, the Grandstand Jockeys are preparing for their upcoming album Place, out February 12. “Now You Do,” the first track off their 2021 debut EP WIN, is expected to make the cut. The band has described their sound as a “Tom Petty joining Nirvana and Queens of the Stone Age.”

    River Costa

Independent singer-songwriter River Costa has released her EP, Mallely’s Lonely Time on Makeout Point. The first song, “Tumultuous,” is about a relationship she has trouble defining. Even though she’s excited about what the future holds, she also has doubts, fears, and even occasional apathy. Costa has also performed as a backup singer for the band Niksen.

  • Slipknot’s Knotfest Roadshow 2022 to Rock Brooklyn and Albany

Slipknot, the notorious heavy metal band, will pass through Brooklyn and Albany this May. This information comes amidst the announcement of Knotfest Roadshow 2022. Special guests Cypress Hill and Ho99o9 are expected to join Slipknot amidst the second leg of their tour and will perform in the two New York venues.

    Knotfest Roadshow 2022

Slipknot was first formed in 1995 in Des Moines, Iowa and their 1999 debut self-titled album propelled them to international fame, selling over two million US copies to date. Since then, the band has dominated the heavy metal scene for over twenty years. Their most recent studio album, We Are Not Your Kind, was released in 2019 and debuted at #1 in 12 countries, including the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and Mexico.

The Grammy-award-winning band announces their 2022 tour following the success of Knotfest Roadshow 2021, which sold out amphitheaters across the country. Moreover, Slipknot’s highly anticipated seventh studio album is expected to drop this year, and their 2021 single, “The Chapeltown Rag,” which debuted at Knotfest Los Angeles, has fans craving for more music. Former Knotfest attendees describe the event as an immersive, apocalyptic, and unforgettable experience.

    Slipknot
    Slipknot

Hip hop groups Cypress Hill and Ho99o9 are also set to follow Slipknot on the second leg of their tour and will be joining the band in Brooklyn and Albany. Cypress Hill initially gained notoriety from 90’s rap songs such as “Insane in the Brain” and “Hits from the Bong.” Since then the group has dabbled in numerous other genres and gained respect from the likes of rock legends Mike Shinoda and Tom Morello. To this day, the group remains a permanent staple of the 90s West Coast hip hop scene. Ho99o9, on the other hand, is a horrorcore rap group, more emblematic of the metal themes that Slipknot portrays. Their music is significantly more uproaring in the way it mirrors and pays respect to heavy metal vocals. The group may not be well known, but they have gained respect between the genres that they envelop, working with the likes of rapper GHOSTEMANE and industrial metal band 3TEETH

  • In Focus: The Campbell Brothers, Live at Caffe Lena

On Saturday, January 15, The Campbell Brothers played a high energy set for a small Caffe Lena crowd that braved the elements to make it out. The self-described church music group rocked Caffe Lena with their unique style that combined funk, soul, gospel, folk, and everything in between. The Campbell Brothers’ energy was contagious and the small cold crowd helped sing along to their entire hour and fifteen minute set.

    campbell brothers

To get a real sense of what The Campbell Brothers’ music is all about by listening, check out this clip of “Morning Train” from 2011.

The Campbell Brothers’ set included “Morning Train” and a number of other energetic tunes including “I’ve Got a Feeling,” “Hell No,” “Heaven Yes,” and “Jump for Joy”. This clip of “Morning Train,” though, is a perfect representation of the tone, mood, and level of musicianship present at the show on Saturday night.

Whether it was Phillip’s touch on guitar, Denise’s powerful vocals, or Chuck’s superb control on the pedal steel, The group hit notes that anyone can enjoy. Their simple hooks made it easy for the crowd to learn the lyrics and sing along with Denise throughout the night.

    campbell brothers

There is no substitute for witnessing their music performed live in person, and it is an experience that music lovers will crave again and again. So the next time The Campbell Brothers morning train rolls into your town, the only question you need to ask yourself is, “how many tickets am I buying?” Also, be sure to check them out on Facebook.

  • Annie in the Water Announce Winter Tour Dates, New Album due in March

Annie in the Water have announced a slate of winter tour dates, ahead of the release of their forthcoming studio album, Sun at Dawn, set to be released Friday, March 4th.

annie in the water sun at dawn
Artwork by Tony Campono, based on a photograph taken by Matt Richards at dawn on Going To The Sun Road at Glacier National Park.

Recorded directly to tape at Artfarm Recording in the heart of the Hudson Valley and mixed by Corey Hayward, Sun at Dawn represents the band’s time spent independently at home, together in the Adirondacks, and on the road again with their fans.

Our forthcoming album Sun at Dawn represents the paths we took in life as individuals and how it brought us together in the band. The album consists of songs that were written along these separate life experiences and are joined by songs that were written together as a band. The sun at dawn illustrates that this is just the beginning of our adventures musically and as friends.

We have a lot planned for 2022. Beyond releasing our newest album we are lining up bigger tours than we have had in recent years. Not only that, but we have also began writing more new material after the recording process of the upcoming album ended. We are fully prepared to hit the ground running when the music scene begins to boom again and we can’t wait to show everyone everything we have been working on!…

Matt Richards, Annie in the Water keys

Annie in the Water’s sound has a groove filled combo of reggae, funk, rock, blues and jam, written with a conscious dose of positive vibes, unique melodies and intelligent lyrics. The group has the ability to fill an entire night with original music and also render well-known covers in their signature style, giving fans extraordinary experiences to share that can’t be seen anywhere else.

Comprised of members Brad Hester (Lead Vocals/Rhythm), Michael Lashomb (Lead Guitar/Vocals), Ryan Trumbull (Drums/Vocals), Chris Meier (Bass/Vocals), Matt Richards (Keys/Vocals) and Brock Kuca (Percussion/Vocals), each performance is another adventure, both exhilarating and everlasting. The group creates a blend of music and entertainment that is inspired by the audience and the moment; the fan-base grows with every single performance in large part due to the indisputable fact that Annie in the Water will make people dance and feel happier no matter their age.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKxG7B35Btg

Each Sunday evening from 7-9pm you’ll find EQXposure on WEQX, featuring two hours of local music from up and coming artists. Tune into WEQX.com this Sunday night to hear new music from Shortwave RadioBand, Paul Moody, Hanzolo, and many more!

    shortwave radioband

WEQX has long been the preeminent independent station in the Capital Region of New York, broadcasting from Southern VT to an ever-expanding listening audience. NYS Music brings you a preview of artists to discover each week, just a taste of the talent waiting to be discovered by fans like you.

    ShortWave RadioBand

Last week, ShortWave RadioBand released their newest single, “SomeDay.” An upbeat rock song about looking ahead to brighter days, the accompanying music video is on its way.  “SomeDay” follows the Schuylerville trio’s debut single, “Don’t Care,” which previously featured on EQXposure in November 2021. Listeners can expect the band to release their first EP later this year.

    Paul Moody

Continuing this week’s theme of positivity, singer-songwriter Paul Moody has released “Letting Light In.” The calming folk song is about being receptive to new connections and relationships, particularly with one special person: “I was king of the lonesome, but I gave up the throne / For what good is a kingdom, when you rule all alone?”. While its melody is simple, the song crescendos into a sweeping instrumental halfway, almost mimicking the blooming of sunflowers.

    Hanzolo

“Goldmine,” the opening song on Hanzolo’s self-titled album, expertly blends soul, funk and pop. There’s rarely a dull moment on the four-minute track, which smoothly glides along and promises plenty of replay value. Hanzolo, a seven-piece alt-funk band, sounds current and clean while still drawing upon retro influences like Motown.

At 74 years old, New Hampshire folk musician Bill Staines died on Sunday, December 5, 2021. For more than 45 years, Bill Staines has been the classic folk songwriter, singing his songs at the country’s top festivals, concerts, clubs and coffee houses. Above all, Staines performed at Saratoga Springs coffeehouse Caffe Lena twice a year from 1968 to 2021, once in the winter and once in the summer.

    Bill Staines

Staines held a special role at Caffe Lena, having performed more than 100 times at the venue. In addition, Staines decided to play at Café Lena twice a year in 1968 and kept his promise. Across the world, many fans have been morning the loss of Staines.

Bill Staines has passed away from cancer and our hearts are breaking. He played Caffe Lena summer and winter every year since 1968. He’s our nearest and dearest and it won’t be the same without him.

    Caffè Lena

On January 22nd, Caffe Lena will host “Crossing the Water,” a tribute concert celebrating the life and legacy of the beloved songwriter, Bill Staines. The tribute will take place on the date that would have been Staines’ winter show for 2022. It will feature Staines’ songs, passages from his autobiography, and video clips from his final concert at the venue on September 17, 2021. Furthermore, there will be additional performances by Dan Berggren, Kate McDonnell, Vivian Nesbitt and John Dillon, Wanda Fischer, Kevin McKrell and Arlin Greene, Jonny and Annie Rosen, and John Kirk and Trish Miller.

Staines had wonderful songs, charm and gentle humor, He was known for being an amazing musician and likable person. Along with his his kindness and gentle wisdom, he was said to have driven more than 65,000 miles every year to perform at music festivals, churches, concert halls and sometimes even in private homes.

For many years I have referred to him as an anchor to our heritage. So much has changed over the years. But Bill has remained a constant.
