  • The B-52s Are Are Bringing Their Farewell Tour To Beacon Theatre

Legendary band of 45 years, The B-52s, have announced their farewell tour, beginning this August. Within their 11 city tour, the group will stop in New York at the Beacon Theatre, on October 13 and 14.

    The B-52s Farewell Tour

Considering the group has over 20 million albums, there is no doubt their tour will be a success. The B-52s have been one of the most monumental pop groups since the 70s and continue to make such a heavy influence on the music industry. This tour will conclude in Atlanta at the Fox Theatre.

However, a tour is not the only thing in store for The B-52s. In fact, their long awaited documentary, directed by Craig Johnson, and executively produced by Fred Armisen, will air in 2023. This film will discuss their musical journey as a group and share never before seen footage, as well as highlight the impact they still have on music.

No one likes to throw a party more than we do, but after almost a half-century on the road, it’s time for one last blow-out with our friends and family…our fans. And with KC & The Sunshine Band and The Tubes on board, it’s going to be one hell of a farewell party at these concerts.

    Fred Schneider

KC and The Sunshine Band and The Tubes  will make guest appearances periodically throughout the tour. The pre-sale for The B-52s Farewell Tour are currently available, while general tickets and VIP Meet & Greet packages go on sale April 29, 12:00 P.M. EST.

  • Wu-Tang Clan and Nas Bring ‘NY State of Mind’ Tour To Prudential Center on Sept. 13

Hip Hop Legends Wu-Tang Clan and Nas have released the dates for their upcoming 25 city summer tour. Beginning in August, the five-week trek will see Nas and the Clan make their way to the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ on Tuesday, September 13.

    NY State of Mind Tour

Wu-Tang Clan are recognized as one of the greatest hip hop groups of all time since their breakout debut, 36 Chambers, in 1993. They have set numerous trends and have had a significant impact on the rap game and have provided us with some of the rap game’s greatest personalities.

Despite having nine distinct characters, the group seamlessly merges under the musical guidance of RZA. While all skilled rappers, his vision for the group both sonically and stylistically has created an everlasting movement. The group became famous for sampling martial arts films, RZA kept a heavy Motown and oldies influence throughout the Clan’s music, and sampling the likes of Syl Johnson, Aretha Franklin, among others.

Unlike many groups that have phased out of the limelight, the Clan remain relevant, regardless of time. While the group has always taken regular breaks, they have still managed to churn out three platinum albums and more than 85 full-length releases. They were also one of the first acts to diversify their brand, with Wu Wear becoming a popular hip hop brand.

Never the slouch, Nas had his big break after the release of his 1992 song “Halftime“, from the Zebrahead movie soundtrack. He released his classic debut, Illamatic, in 1994 with Colombia Records. With gritty and thought provoking rhymes alike, Nas is certified as one of the best rappers of all-time.

After winning his first Grammy-award for his 2020 album, King’s Disease, Nas was again nominated for “King’s Disease II,” a testament to his longevity.

With the substantial amount of influence both parties have had over decades within the hip hop community and worldwide, the tour is sure to be highly successful.

For all fans, tickets will be available for purchase on Tuesday, April 26 at 10 A.M.

  • BUKU Music and Art Project Celebrates 10th Anniversary in New Orleans

After a pandemic-induced two-year hiatus, the BUKU Music and Art Project made it’s triumphant return to New Orleans this past weekend. The 2-day music festival and art project took place at it’s usual location outside of Mardi Gras World on the banks of the Mississippi river. The project’s 10th anniversary featured a stacked lineup of EDM and bass music, rap, hip-hop, and indie rock. Back in March of 2020, as the stages and grounds were being built, project organizer Winter Circle Productions made the tough decision to cancel BUKU Project just over a week out. Being the first cancelled festival in 2020, it was only fitting that in 2022, a few weeks after Mardi Gras celebrations returned to New Orleans, that BUKU would be the first festival to kick off the season.

The 2022 lineup featured several hold over names from the cancelled 2020 edition including headliner Tyler, the Creator, Glass Animals, Alison Wonderland, Taking Back Sunday, and 100 Gecs. Over the years BUKU has grown into a 20,000 attendees per day festival and the location has proven ideal. A 100 year old power plant with graffiti covered smoke stacks and a vintage riverboat anchored on the Mississippi overshadow the project, reflecting the rich history of New Orleans’ warehouse district.

    The Project

BUKU Project attendees were treated to a perfect sunny 75 degrees in New Orleans, a city that was eager to welcome music lovers back into their arms. New Orleans’ famous culture center of Bourbon Street is once again buzzing with music and activity and this was mirrored into the design of BUKU. Organizers weaved the experience of discovering local music into the fabric of the project.

As you walk around the grounds, you find pop-up musical performances, many which were not featured on the lineup. In the fields of the main stage area, there is a small vendor market with bands playing DIY style shows in the center of the market. A mobile rickshaw draped in hundreds of Mardi Gras beads was seen riding around the festival with massive speakers and a DJ playing music off the back. Outside of the ‘Ballroom’ stage, there was a boxing ring where rappers, bands, and interpretative performers played intensely experimental music.

Aside from the music, BUKU is also an Art Project that celebrates New Orleans artists. Art installations were scattered around the festival grounds and vendors were selling art and custom clothing. Modern sculptures and lighting pieces were found around every corner of the grounds, provided interesting backdrops to the music and for photos. There were also “live art” areas where graffiti and mural artists spent the two days creating beautiful pieces in the shadows of the music stages. Some of these were sold or auctioned for charity, but many fans just spent time watching the art being created while listening to the music in the distance.

    Bass Music and Underground Rap

The backbone of the BUKU Project lineup are the dubstep and bass music artists, with the ‘Wharf’ stage dedicated entirely to the genre for both days. The stage production was top notch and all of the performers took full advantage of the system’s power. Lasers from the stage were projected onto the nearby warehouse and the Louis Armstrong riverboat anchored in the river, creating the feeling of an intimate outdoor club while still housing thousands of fans. Liquid Stranger and Lane 8 headlined the stage on Friday and Saturday respectively, with Svdden Death, Mersiv, Clozee, and Wreckno filling in the days.

“Multimedia aggregate” Lab Group also played the Wharf stage, only three months after the tragic death of member and producer Charlesthefirst. The 25 year old’s death shocked the community, but surviving members Potions and Supertask are keeping the aggregate alive and still performing the music that the group created together. At one point in their set Lab Group paid tribute by playing “Old Ways” which features rap verses from Charlesthefirst.

Underground rap and hip-hop played a large role in the 2022 edition of the BUKU Project in New Orleans. Odd Future founding member and now international superstar and fashion designer Tyler, the Creator headlined the project on Saturday. Ever since his solo debut Goblin back in 2011, Tyler, the Creator has been putting a fresh spin on his sound with each new release. 2019’s IGOR was an ambitious blend of rap and experimental R&B which debuted at No. 1 on the charts. Tyler, the Creator followed this up with Call Me If You Get Lost in 2021 which continued to propel his commercial success.

Aside from the big name headliner, the rap lineup for both days of BUKU was stacked with rising stars and veteran artists. Friday featured ShyGirl and Tierra Whack in the Ballroom with Trippie Redd delivering a fiery set mid-day on the main Skyline stage. On Saturday, fans were treated to a full day of Flo Milli, Vince Staples, Baby Keem, Maxo Kream, and Tyler, the Creator. Another major success of the BUKU Project was that these individual genre lineups had no conflicts and fans who were there for the rap did not have to make any hard decisions.

    Indie Rock and The Undefined

What festival would be complete these days without the indie kids? The best thing about music today is that anyone can listen to anything at any time. This has cultivated a generation of music lovers with a very wide palate. This was on clear display when Taking Back Sunday took the Skyline stage for their mid-day set. The band is on tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of their seminal 2002 LP Tell All Your Friends and they split their set between newer material and classic songs “Cute Without the ‘E’” and “MakeDamnSure.” The band drew a large crowd for an early festival set and the injection of nostalgia was a beautiful way to kick off the weekend.

Friday headliners and Australian psych-rock titans Tame Impala were the highlight of the indie side of the festival. The band is on the second leg of The Slow Rush Tour which was partially postponed due to the pandemic but is back on the road in full force. Featuring a massive lighting rig suspended from the stage, the band’s live production overwhelms any audience they host. The lighting gives the unsettling yet beautiful feeling of coming face to face with a UFO.

The band cruised through reworked live versions of The Slow Rush songs “Breath Deeper” and “Borderline” while playing a driving, laser fueled rendition of fan favorite “Elephant.” Two extended releases of confetti during the last two songs “Let It Happen” and “New Person, Same Old Mistakes” felt like a celebration not only of Tame Impala or BUKU, but more of the return to live music in one of the richest musical cities in the world.

Given the seemingly endless creative outlets that exist today, there are so many artists out there that defy categorization and cannot fit within the typical genre classifications. 100 Gecs were an early highlight of the day on Friday. Described as “hyperpop,” the duo performs an aggressive and in your face punk-like pop music. Their chaotic style is a great show to see in a small club, but their gigantic sound reverberated across the main stage grounds as if that was their natural setting. Porter Robinson performed his Nurture live show and British indie rockers Glass Animals brought their iconic summer pool staging to same time slot on the main stage on Friday and Saturday respectively.

    Our Impression

All in all, the return of the BUKU Music and Art Project to New Orleans was a major success. Organizers brought back some of the big names from the cancelled 2020 lineup and designed grounds that were well laid out and easy to navigate. Lines for food and drinks were never too long and there was plenty of free water and “BUKU Budz” throughout the festival supporting attendees. Most festivals with bass heavy electronic music suffer from sound bleed issues, but none of the stages interfered with each other at BUKU. The food lineup featured local mainstays and highlighted the signature creole cuisine of New Orleans.

NYS Music had a great time at the festival and we caught sets from so any different artists and styles throughout the weekend. We enjoyed seeing big names like Tame Impala in their prime, but also discovering new music that will become part of our rotation. Nothing is better than discovering new music live, looking over at your head-banging friends and asking “what song is this?” Moments like this are what we missed most during the pandemic and we are so happy to have back again.

  • Upstate NY Director and Singer/Songwriter collaborate on score for “Panama”

Nashville needed Upstate New York for the upcoming film Panama before it could arrive in theaters.

Panama is loosely based on a true story of a special operations guy (Cole Hauser, who plays Rip on Yellowstone) getting mixed up in the US invasion of Panama in 1989. Mel Gibson stars as his point man in the military. The film is directed by Mark Neveldine (Crank) with music composed by Central New York native now in Nashville, Mick Fury.

    panama

Neveldine, was born and raised in Watertown, and called upon Fury to compose the score in his studio. Stunt coordinator/actor Frank Blake, also from Watertown, organized his team from his home base in Nashville. Fury shares how we connected together with the film crew:

So initially they liked some of my old Rock band (from Syracuse) Silent Fury’s music and asked to license that. A month later when I got officially hired I first got to sit with the director and hear what emotion he was hoping to present in each particular scene. They call this a “spotting session.” After spent a few hours on that, I hopped into my studio with a rough cut of the film and got to work. Most of the score was scenes you would guess, gun fights, drama, chase scenes, military stuff…but there’s a few scenes with some pretty intense love making happening. Certainly never expected my career to take a turn for softcore porn music! Lol. It wasn’t really that graphic, but it is intense and it’s a unique inspiration to compose for.

In Panama, Fury paints a soundscape of 80’s influences from cumbia (the folk music of Panama) to synthesizers to straight up rock n’ roll.

I was working on the film as they were editing the video, which is not typically how its done. Usually they would finish the video and then send it to me, but the music is such an integral part of this film they wanted me in on the ground floor. As such, sometimes I’d score a scene, think it was great and send it…only to get an email back with the scene looking and feeling totally different, and a request of “Do you mind looking at this again?” When we’d finished the film, I felt great…until they asked the video team for a few major changes, including the “tone of the film.” That required me to re-score almost the whole thing a second time. Wild and not highly recommended, however I learned so much the first time through that the second time through my compositions were much much better and really helped to nail the mood.

Looking back, Fury says he has blocked the six months of struggle, sweat, blood and tears and only remembers a really fun experience that was artistically rewarding. And he can’t wait to do another.

I have some connections in the movie world, including to the director of this film. It’s Mark Neveldine who did Crank with Jason Statham. I asked if I could get a song in Panama, and he said send something along and they’d see. I did, he and the production company liked it and asked for more. I sent more, and then more again, and again. I was driving across the Golden Gate bridge a few weeks later with my wife on vacation when I got a call asking, “Well, do you think you could score the whole movie?” I had no idea if I could but of course I said yes and here we are lol.

Panama will release on Friday, March 18th on digital and in theaters.

World renowned R&B/Soul singer The Weeknd is set for an international tour of his albums After Hours and Dawn FM, beginning in his hometown of Toronto, Ontario this July. He will travel thereafter all across the U.S., including Met Life Stadium in Rutherford, NJ on Saturday July 16, 2022.

    After Hours Till Dawn

His first half of the tour will conclude this September in Los Angeles, California at Sofi Stadium before continuing overseas. Additionally, Pop and R&B/Soul singer Doja Cat, will join the stage during this tour.

Fans will be given the option of three different pre sales for The Weeknd’s Tour. On March 4, access to pre sale tickets will be granted to those who previously had After Hours arena tour tickets. Furthermore, fans who are Verizon Up loyalty program customers will have first access to purchase presale tickets for certain shows between March 7 at 10 AM, until Wednesday March 9 at 10 PM. Lastly, Spotify users who are also top streamers of The Weeknd, will be provided with the option of buying presale tickets starting March 8, as well as Live Nation presales in all markets.

The Weeknd did more than just sing, but developed an emotional story, not only musically, but visually through the use of his short films and music videos, which brought his words to life. In fact, Amazon Prime Video recently debuted The Weeknd x The Dawn FM Experience. This special is a theatrical performance of Dawn FM.

The Weeknd will represent Goodwill as their ambassador and team up with the United Nations World Food Programme, which is the world’s largest humanitarian organization fighting against global hunger. Together they will launch the XO Humanitarian Fund, which is administered by World Food Program USA. Although The Weeknd is a multi-platinum and diamond certified global superstar, he still desires to give back to those in need, specifically communities on the brink of starvation in countries like Ethiopia, Madagascar and Yemen. His philanthropic efforts do not stop there since the two-time Grammy winning artist will not only contribute $1 from each ticket sold from his tour within North America, but make a donation of $500,000.

  • Necronomicon Will Stop at Montage Music Hall During North American Tour

Canadian death metal group Necronomicon will arrive in North America for a tour this Spring. They will co-headline with a fellow metal group, The Convalescence between April and June.

    Necronomicon

This musical journey will embark on April 29 in Kalamazoo, MI at Papa Pete’s and will move throughout the states, making a stop in Rochester Montage Music Hall on June 1. Necronomicon will perform their latest album “UNUS”, which can be streamed or downloaded here.

I think I don’t need to mention how hard these last years have been for everyone, and it’s about time that we get back to a healthy music scene. We are more than happy to be back in the U.S. We really hope you guys will come and support us as we bring you ‘Vivus Verum’ on this run. Hail to all of you.

    Rob The Witch

The music group was founded in 1988 by guitarist and singer Rob “The Witch”. Since their first full length album “Pharoah of Gods” dropped in 2002, Necronomicon has evolved over time. In 2019, they became the second band ever since VOIVOD to receive a certificate of honor for over 30 years of being in the music industry.

“UNUS” is a dark and black metal album that brings about darkness, brutality and elegance all in one. Along with machine like drums there is a special feature by Geirlioz (Dimmu Borgir) on Piano in ”From Ashes Into Flesh”. Necronomicon cannot wait to put on the performance of a lifetime for their American fans.
