  • Inaugural Listen Up Awards Announced for June 17 at Lark Hall

Coming this June to Albany’s Lark Hall is the first annual Capital District Digital Listen Up Awards. Sponsored by Mirth Films and RadioRadioX, the awards shows aim to give the fans a chance to vote for their favorites among a wide selection of categories – some typical, some unique to the Listen Up Awards.

    Listen Up Awards

With voting now closed, Mirth Films’ Frankie Cavone looks ahead to the awards show, to be held at Lark Hall on Friday, June 17th, starting at 7pm.

Discussing the genesis of the event, Cavone said “We started the Listen Up Awards to give fans a chance to pick who their favorite band is in the Capital Region throughout numerous categories. We thought this was a great way to see who the music fanatics in the Capital Region are going to see live, listening and following.” Cavone stressed the people’s choice style to the event, emphasizing, “Your Vote, Your Choice.”

Fans should not expect a traditional award ceremony, with superlative awards given out and a show-casual attire, meaning wear your favorite band shirt and a pair of blue jeans.

We want the Listen Up Awards to be a fun experience not only for the fans, but the bands and artists as well. There will be live music performances and much more that you will have to find out by coming to Lark Hall on June 17th

    Frankie Cavone – Mirth Films

With the continually strong Capital District music scene having a diverse music scene, Cavone feels “We couldn’t have a better array of bands and artists across all genres. It has been great to get to know a lot of them over the years and watching their careers flourish just puts a smile on your face. It makes you love being part of the community that much more and coming back night after night. There is nothing I would change about it.”

“For us at Mirth Films, we as members of this community embrace and do our best to contribute to what exists. But most importantly remain a fan first, always. We at Mirth Films are just happy to be able to help assist them in anyway possible,”

The Listen Up Awards will be held at Lark Hall in Albany on June 17th starting at 7pm. See what bands/artists made the cut below.

  • Space Out, Outside Brings the Ambient Outdoors in Beacon

There’s something in the air in Beacon. It’s a subtle atmospheric sound that has been emitted on a monthly basis, in the warm weather months, for five years and running. It’s a decidedly low-key, mind expanding, alfresco concert experience called Space Out, Outside.

    Space Out Outside

The event is the brainchild of Beacon-based ambient artist Craig Chin, a guitarist who works under the name Errant Space. It started as an occasional series in 2018 and moved onto a monthly gathering in 2020, as Covid-19 shut down most of the live music business inside area clubs.

According to Chin, Space Out, Outside is “a place for adventurous electronic and experimental musicians to get together and collectively create improvised sounds in the great outdoors.”  Weather permitting, the events take place the third Saturday of every month, from 3 – 5 pm, at Polhill Park, adjacent to the Beacon Visitors Center.

    Space Out Outside

Many of the Hudson Valley’s most adventurous ambient and experimental artists have participated or are slated to be featured at this summer’s events. The roster includes Bob Lukomski, Lucas Brode, Al Margolis, Katie Down, Tom Law and Rick Warren of Guitars A Go Go to name a few.  Most events are recorded for posterity and can be heard at the Bandcamp page, with details and the schedule of upcoming events can be found here.  Chin has also been hosting the monthly Errant Space podcast for seven years. It features collaborations and interviews with like-minded musicians here and abroad. These can be streamed here.

The Hudson Valley is a bit of a hot bed of ambient sound. It’s the home to the annual Quiet Village, an “anti-festival” of sounds whose fourth edition is slated to take place in New Paltz on September 25. It’s also home to Basilica Hudson’s SoundBaths and 24-Hour Drone .  And Beacon has also been the site of Halloweening, where musicians perform costumed at The Howland Center on October 31.

The next Space Out, Outside will take place Saturday, June 18 at 3 pm and feature Electr(on)ic Chakra, Scary Mountain Wizard and Errant Space.

  • Ariana Reines’ “Divine Justice” to be Performed in Manhattan

On June 11, Manhattan’s Performance Space New York will host a performance of “Divine Justice,” a 24-hour long show by Obie-winning playwright Ariana Reines.

Taking a mystical approach, “Divine Justice” hypothesizes what a female-first, reformation-oriented conception of justice would look like. The play draws influence from early Greek theater, exploring its themes using the Greek myth of Medea. The main character of the production, Medea is portrayed by Obie-winning actress Birgit Huppuch. Other inspirations include Balkan women’s folk singing, Reverend Billy’s Church of Stop Shopping, and the pop culture trope of the courtroom drama.

Promotional artwork for “Divine Justice,” found on Performance Space New York’s website.

Reines conceived the play in wake of the hearings of Brett Kavanaugh and Kyle Rittenhouse during 2018 and 2020 respectively, viewing these legal proceedings as “precise portraits of the judiciary as a theater of white masculine hysteria.”

Looking to explore thousands of years worth of misogyny through “Divine Justice,” she chose the 24-hour format out of a desire to attract a crowd of “hardcore people.” Over the course of its runtime, the production will include refreshments, meal breaks, “more traditional performance events,” meditation, conversation, and music. A schedule for such proceedings will be found on Performance Space New York’s website in the days leading up to the show.

In addition to her works as a playright such as “Divine Justice,” Ariana Reines is also a poet, performing artist, and astrologer. Her most recent collection of poetry, A SAND BOOK, won the 2020 Kingsley Tufts Prize and was longlisted for the National Book Award.

Along with Reines and Huppuch, other contributors to “Divine Justice” include Sunder Ganglani on sound design, Tuçe Yasak on lighting design, Marsha Ginsberg on production design, Ken Rus Schmoll as a drama coach and co-director, Savitri D as the play’s dramaturgist, Yva Las Vegass as a musical performer.

  • Tupper Arts Hosts Free Music on Monday and Wednesday Nights all Summer in Tupper Lake

Each summer in the Adirondacks there is an abundance of music series in the towns and villages that dot the Adirondack Park. One of those towns, Tupper Lake, features two free music series on Monday and Wednesday evenings throughout the summer, if you are able to escape to this remote outpost in the Adirondacks.

Tupper Lake is located in Franklin County, located within the Adirondack Park. Tupper Lake makes up the Tri-Lakes region along with nearby Saranac Lake and Lake Placid. The village was first settled during the town’s lumber production period in 1844, making the village the top lumber producer in New York State.

Since 1976, Tupper Lake has been celebrating its artists and artisans that make up the small community. Before Tupper Arts, there was the Tupper Lake Arts Council, then named Tupper Lake Presents. Throughout the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, the Arts Council continued strong, most notably starting the annual tradition that is the Tupper Lake Arts Show, now entering its 49th year.

In 2018, current Tupper Arts Vice President Louise McNally headed the planning to re-establish the Arts Council as the community entity it is today. Along with 11 board members, the Arts Council was saved and renamed as Tupper Arts and incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization to allow for the collection of donations to start strengthening the arts involvement in Tupper Lake. Tupper Arts has grown and set up a tradition of year-round programming to involve the community and provide easy access to the arts, through gallery shows, classes for all ages, live performances, and community events.

The Tupper Lake Municipal Park is located on Demars Boulevard off Route 3. This park is the center of the Tupper Lake community. The park is home to the best sunset views, a waterfront walkway, picnic table area, two covered fishing overlooks, public boat slips, playground, sports fields, skateboard park, and much more.

They are devotees of Desmond Dekker and the way the old school did it. At the same time, The Big Takeover crosses lines and blends traditions like global pop fusionists. Their deceptively complex arrangements and big hooks connect with the spirit of Motown and the uptown sophistication of the 21st century retro soul and R&B revival scene.
