  • The Long Island Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame Gains Permanent New Home

After nearly 18 years without a physical place to call their own, the Long Island Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame announced they will finally have their first building location in Stony Brook. The grand opening for the space will be held in November.

The non-profit signed a long-term lease with the Ward Melville Heritage Organization and will move into the educational and cultural center located in Stony Brook Village.  With 8,800 square feet and two stories, the Long Island Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame has ample space to make the building their own.

The Hall of Fame has existed since 2004 with no permanent building. With over 100 inductees including Billy Joel, Joan Jett, Lou Reed, LL Cool J, Twisted Sister, and more, the building will allow for a permanent “Hall of Fame” with plaques and exhibits to recognize these talents.

We’re looking forward to creating world-class displays that showcase Long Island’s rich and diverse musical and entertainment history in new and exciting ways. We will feature different and exciting exhibits, displays, videos, and education offerings that will make our center a dynamic place for people of all ages to visit on a regular basis.

The space will allow areas for a library, classrooms for educational programs and master classes, and even a theater. The main exhibit space will rotate through different themes to celebrate Long Island’s long musical history.

Designed by world-renowned visual designer Kevin O’Callaghan, the music hall’s first theme will be “Long Island’s Legendary Club Scene: 1960s-1980s.” According to the president of The Ward Melville Heritage Organization, Gloria D. Rocchio, the center was specifically constructed with performances and exhibits in mind.

Our organization has grown and our wish has always been to have a physical facility to showcase our mission of celebrating Long Island’s musical history and supporting education … we can now achieve our dream.

The official ribbon-cutting and public opening of the completed space is scheduled to take place this November. For more information and to see artist renderings of the exhibits, visit limehof.org

  • The Mars Volta Release First New Music In Over 10 Years

The Mars Volta have broken their 10 year hiatus today with the release of their new single and short film, “Blacklight Shine.” Over the weekend, the band began teasing this release with coordinates to Grand Park in Los Angeles, hinting at some kind of “pop-up” for June 19th-21st. This came in the form of a cube you can enter and experience the new song with an audio-visual experience. Today, June 21st, the single is officially released along with the bands first tour since 2012.

“Blacklight Shine” highlights The Mars Volta’s fundamental strengths in their most accessible and Latin-rooted form. Vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala sings mostly in Spanish with his signature tones soaring over a mix of traditional drums and Caribbean bongos and percussions. Guitarist Omar Rodriguez-López presents a sunshine-laced psychedelic groove perfect for a release date on the summer solstice. When talking about the story of the song, Cedric says he is trying to shine a light on “a wave of rolling blackouts washing memories onto shore, a heartbeat that still remembers everything.” Watch the short film below, which takes place on a Caribbean beach and features a multi-generational dance sequence backed by driving percussions.

The announcement is also coming with a short tour; a New York show is happening at NYC’s Terminal 5 on September 29th. Presale starts this Wednesday, June 22nd with a full general sale on Friday, June 24th. See the official tour poster below and head to the band’s website for ticket links. The Mars Volta has not yet announced any details on what would be their seventh LP, but stay tuned for more announcements to come.

The Sackets Harbor Historical Society announced the lineup for their free upcoming summer concert series, Concerts on the Waterfront.

Held from 3:00 to 5:00 pm every Sunday from June 26 through September 4, the summer concert series is back for its 38th season.  Last year, the theme represented the relief of the return of live music.  The 2022 theme, “Let’s Celebrate!” is yet another joyous return for summer shows.

Other upcoming performances for the summer series include Tink Bennett and Taylor Made, ATLAS, The Dakotas, Oceans Below, and Maria DeSantis Orchestra, among others. With genres such as jazz, country, classic rock, Latin jazz, folk, classical and more, Concerts on the Waterfront certainly has something for everyone to enjoy throughout the summer season.

Over the course of the summer 11 talented, diverse groups will take the stage at the Sackets Harbor Battlefield. Guests are invited to bring chairs and blankets, and should the weather not permit an outdoor show, the rain site will be St. Andrews Parish Center on East Main St. & Woolsey St.

  • The Harlem Gospel Travelers Release Upbeat Single and New Album “Look Up!”

The Harlem Gospel Travelers will release a new full-length album, Look Up! on September 16, via Colemine Records.  Ahead of the album’s release, the trio shared their empowering title track and fun-filled music video, which you can see below.

    Harlem Gospel Travelers

With production by acclaimed soul singer-songwriter, Eli “Paperboy” Reed, the new album gives the trio their first collection of completely original material.  The trio consists of Thomas Gatling, George Marage, and Dennis Bailey, all of whom grew up in different areas but refined their talents in Harlem. While the group is greatly influenced by the gospel quartet tradition of the ‘50s and ‘60s, they give a modern edge with this recent release.

Travelers Gaitling and Marage met producer Reed through an after-school program that grew their appreciation and knowledge of the deep history of the gospel quartet. The program allowed them to gain new perspectives, and tap into their true talents. After the 2019 release of the LP He’s On Time, Bailey joined the two, completing the group.

He’s On Time garnered rave reviews in 2019 along with high-profile fans such as Elton John, who invited them on his Rocket Man radio show. The LP also gave way for the group to perform at festivals like Pilgrimage and Telluride Jazz.

This newest title track, “Look Up” empowers listeners and the upcoming album is sure to not disappoint. The Harlem Gospel Travelers are reviving old sounds and reminding listeners how prevalent the music is still today. While gospel is always at the root of their music, the group also incorporates country, folk, rock, soul, and blues.

Check out The Harlem Gospel Travelers live, with the performance dates below.

    Tour Dates:

July 23 – Staten Island, NY – Maker Park Radio

Aug. 3 – Bloomington, IN – Buskirk Chumley Theater

Aug. 4 – Springfield, IL – Levitt Pavilion
