Syracuse natives Sophistafunk have announced a show at the Stanley Theatre on Feb. 18, 2023, starting at 7:30 p.m.
Sophistafunk is comprised of Adam Gold (keyboardist), Jack Brown (frontman), Tommy Weeks (saxophonist), and Emmanuel Washington (drummer and vocalist). After nearly ten years on the road, the group continues to connect with many audiences, from jazz fans to reggae. Their live shows are packed with passion with cutting-edge lyrics and heavy beats.
Recently, they became the house band for the new game show hosted by Guy Fieri, Guy’s Ultimate Game Night, which will air on the Food Network on the Discovery+ streaming platform. They met Fieri in 2013 while performing on his show Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives at the restaurant/music venue Funk ‘n Waffles, which Gold owns.
Sophistafunk will be bringing their high energy to the stage at the Stanley Theatre, an almost 3,000-capacity venue designed by famous architect Thomas Lamb in 1928. It remains one of the three Lamb theatres still in operation, including the Proctors Theatre and The Landmark Theatre. On Sunday, January 15, Lark Hall will host Hanzolo, Canella and Jak Lizard, for a night of rising bands from across Upstate New York.
Hanzolo, who won the 2022 NYS Music March Madness, is a 7-piece band from Cooperstown, toting an explosive and emotional sound that mixes soul, jazz, rock, and funk. Their songs are dance-ably fun with thoughtful lyrics, backed up by a bright horn section. Not only have Hanzolo won NYS Music’s March Madness, but they also won the WEQX Battle of the Bands and opened Albany’s annual Pearlpalooza music festival in 2019. The first release from Hanzolo, Table Butter, was followed up with a self-title release in the fall of 2021.
Hanzolo’s music has been compared to table butter; Soft enough to spread, yet hard enough to keep its shape. Watch the video for “Not Easy” below.
Joining Hanzolo on January 15 is Canella, who have established an electric alt rock presence in the Capital Region and recently won WCDB’s ‘Song of the Year’ award for their debut single “Quiet Love”. Joining the Tulip Fest 2022 Lineup, Canella set a fire on stage that ignited female fronted rock nostalgia but with a refreshing DIY take. Their upcoming album is a revenge journal of songs pulled out of the classic ‘Burn Book’ of their personal lives. Their music is dedicated to former bandmate and best friend, Kyle Robinson who tragically passed away in a car accident in 2020.
Rounding out the lineup of artists on the rise is Jak Lizard, a New York crooner and self-declared “poptimist”. His orange, pink, and yellow melodies with a penchant for two stepping with your best friend.
Superstar R&B songstress, SZA, will be embarking on her first nationwide arena tour — The S.O.S. North American Tour — in promotion of her number 1 selling album, SOS.

Soulive and Lettuce co-founder, Eric “Kraz” Krasno is a New York-based Grammy-winning guitarist, songwriter, recording artist, and producer. His own musical roots lie in funk, jazz, rock, and hip-hop, and he has written songs and produced records for a variety of artists in a range of genres including Norah Jones, Aaron Neville, Talib Kweli, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Ledisi, 50 Cent, and Matisyahu.
Butcher Brown with Special Guests (May 8 – 10)
Pulsing from the nerve center of Jellowstone Studios in Richmond VA, Butcher Brown takes careful note of the history and legacy of jazz and throws caution to the wind. Their musical vibe blends jazz with hip hop, funk, rap, rock and soul. The group honors each musical genre and, at the same time, challenges traditional musical boundaries.
Antibalas (May 18 – 21)
It’s hard to believe that more than twenty years have passed since Antibalas’s humble beginning as a neighborhood dance / protest band in the block parties and underground parties in pre-gentrified Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Over the past two decades they have evolved into what The Guardian called “one of the world’s finest Afrobeat bands” while enjoying equal renown for their cross-genre collaborations with legends of popular music.

Headed by Snarky Puppy’s multi-Grammy–winning percussion duo of Robert “Sput” Searight and Nate Werth, Ghost-Note is an explosion of sound. Soulive (June 15 – 18 & 29 – July 2)
Soulive has never made any bones about what they do best; it’s right there in their name. Since forming in 1999, the trio of guitarist Eric Krasno, drummer Alan Evans and keyboardist Neal Evans has carried the torch for the soul-jazz organ trio.
A flocking good time was had in downtown Albany as two of the jam scenes hottest acts – Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and Dogs in a Pile – teamed up for an unforgettable evening of ‘bird-dogging’ at Empire Live on Friday, December 9th. Packing out the venue and lighting up the crowd with a healthy dose of high energy funk, top-shelf improvisation, psychedelic dance grooves and plenty of good old-fashioned shredding, the evening also served as birthday celebration for Dogs’ keyboardist Jeremy Kaplan.

Flanked in tie dye and smothered in patchouli, fans flocked to the venue early enough to catch the opening act Dogs in a Pile. One of the most talked about up-and-coming bands around, 2022 has been a huge year for the young New Jersey quintet. Consisting of Jimmy Law and Brian Murray on guitars, Sam Lucid on bass, Joe Babick on drums and the Jeremy Kaplan on keys, the exciting group wasted no time showing everyone what all the buzz is about.

Launching into the song “Look Johnny” and seamlessly transitioning into “Frosty” and “Fenway” before coming up for air, it was clear the Dogs were determined to make the most of their allotted time. Weaving together a tapestry of colorful sound with an undeniable charisma, Albany fans were then treated to the live debut of “Let U Go.” Rounding out the short, but impressive set was “G Song” followed by “Bent Strange,” but it wouldn’t be the last time we’d see members of the dog pound on stage this night.

After a brief break in the action, it was finally time for the long-awaited return of Pigeons Playing Ping Pong who had not played in Albany since March of 2019. Now celebrating 15 years as a band and touring in support of their sixth independent full-length album Perspective, some longtime fans could be heard reminiscing about seeing their first P4 show at the significantly smaller Red Square (now the Public Parish House) just down the block back in 2012. One of the most fan-friendly and hardest working bands going, their continued growth and popularity should come as a surprise to no one.

Taking the stage and genuinely thanking everyone for coming out before even playing a single note, front man ‘Scrambled’ Greg Ormont was all smiles while giving his customary pre-show p-p-p-pep talk. Reassuring everyone that they were in for some serious fun, the party on North Pearl Street kicked off with “Porcupine” from the band’s 2017 album Pizazz. All warmed up and feeling good, things fell into place nicely when “Fall In Place” landed on a surprise Beatles cover of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” that boasted an absolutely gorgeous guitar solo from ax-man Jeremy Schon and a lengthy “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” (Led Zeppelin) tease for good measure.

Now calling on a little help from their friends, it was at this point the band invited “the other Jeremy” out, welcoming Dogs in a Pile keyboardist and the birthday boy himself, Jeremy Kaplan back to the stage to sit on “Sunny Day.” Adding a whole new dynamic to an already funky sound, Kaplan’s contributions were huge here and he seemed like a natural fit, finally answering a question that’s been dogging P4 fans for years: “What would they sound like if they added some keys?” Quite the way to ring in your 24th birthday indeed. Keeping the dance party going strong, the one-two punch of “Move Like That” into “Live It Up” had the crowd worked up into a sweaty frenzy as the band brought the lengthy opening set to a close with “Elephante.”

Back with more positive vibes, Pigeons started the second frame with “Live Life” before going all in on an “Upfunk” sandwich that featured a jaw dropping drum solo from Alex “Gator” Petropoulos smack dab in the middle. Always clever with their setlists, a bit of an aquatic theme seemed to emerge as “Beneath the Surface” gave way to fan favorite “Poseidon” resulting in one of the biggest peaks of the evening courtesy of Schon’s incendiary shredding.

Master of disguise and purveyor of cool, bassist Ben Carrey was keeping it heady all night long, but perhaps his bass bombs were never more physically felt than on the next combination of songs, “Twitch” and “Water.” A scorching “High As Five” would bring the second set to a close and leave fans begging for more. Giving it 100 percent max effort and always happy to please “the flock”, Pigeons would take flight one final time, returning for an encore of” Schwanthem” and sending the hot crowd into the cold night with huge feelings of satisfaction. A fantastic evening of live music, song and dance, shared joy and vibe that quite simply downtown Albany hasn’t seen since before the pandemic.

On Saturday November 19, WonderFront Music and Arts Festival 2022 continued on for an unforgettable Day 2. Since the last festival in 2019, WonderFront has made a comeback with headliners Kings of Leon, G-Eazy, Lauren Daigle and Swae Lee, all making headway to restore the annual festival within Seaport Village along the pier in downtown San Diego.
Starting the day with Fitz and The Tantrums at the Events.com main stages, the show-goers belted the lyrics to fan favorite “Out of my League” which was a huge milestone in the band’s early career. Saturday’s afternoon sun became the perfect natural spotlight for the indie pop rock band founded in 2008 by lead vocalist Michael Fitzpatrick when they released their first hit single “Breakin’ The Chains of Love” in 2009.

The festival moved towards transpiring viral success Tai Verdes, known for his pop and indie inspired music. Tai grew to fame during the pandemic in 2020 for his hit single “Stuck in The Middle,” which successively sprung him into a well-deserved music career. The crowd grew full as Tai was engaging with fans with an urge to hurl over the pit’s rail guard, as Verdes made it all worth the wait, especially when the performance of hit single “A-O-K” was embraced by a sea of loyal fans.
As the sun started winding down, singer/songwriter Bill Dess took a stand on the stage with his blue electric guitar. Going by the stage name of Two Feet, Bill balances a groove with a heavy tone and edgy electric guitar riffs. Representing the east coast, Bill Dess was born and raised in Manhattan where he began the production of his music career. Dess set the tone for those around as he strung his hit release “I Feel Like I’m Drowning” which reached number 36 on The US Hot Rock Songs Chart.
Leading into one of the top headliners of Saturday’s lineup was the unforgettable Swae Lee performed an impressive and crowd pleasing show. Swae leaped onto stage telling the crowd “I’m gonna make this shit unforgettable for y’all,” leading into featured hit release “Unforgettable” with French Montana. Leaning over the guard rails into the crowd, Swae was standing over the monitors, jumping from stage left to stage right and throwing his shirt into the crowd. Festival goers swung left to right as top hit “Swang” boomed through the bass. He made his appreciation for the fans known, putting on quite a remarkable show.
Swae Lee has been best known for songs from the album SremmLife from a duo Rae Sremmurd with his brother.. Swae Lee has featured artists on many tracks, such as Jhene Aiko, Post Malone, Traviss Scott and Nicki Minaj. Some of his fan favorites include “Unforgettable,” “Sunflower” and “Sativa” For one of WonderFront’s many headliners, Swae Lee put on an unforgettable show.
Headliner G-Eazy made an appearance Saturday night, having risen to attention in 2014 when his first major label album These Things Happen hit number 3 on the US BillBoard charts. G-Eazy cherished this show in honor of his fanbase to carry on their support over the years.
Playing one of Saturday’s concluding shows in San Diego’s all time ocean overlook, Ruocco Park. Echosmith took the stage to honor their last show on the band’s 2022 tour. Lead singer and keyboardist Sydney Sierota held a special place for San Diego, it being her hometown, which made their last show of the year more memorable for the fans and the alternative pop band.
To conclude an eventful Day 2 of WonderFront Music and Arts Festival. headliner Kings of Leon dropped an outstanding closing performance. The crowd was packed with show goers urging to get upfront for a better view along the marina, where fans filled the venue from front to back. With millions of follower on Spotify, their listeners were ecstatic for their show and appearance to the multi-genre festival. The group, composed of brothers Caleb, Nathan, Jared and their cousin Matthew Followill, performed “Sex on Fire,” “Use Somebody” and “Closer” from Kings’ most iconic album release, Only By The Night.
The wait for the American rock band was worth the wait when the crowd belted each song and roared of applause. The closing on Saturday November 19 set the bar for a remarkable show, raising high hopes for the final day of WonderFront Festival.

The Rise of Josh X
The the KSR Records signee and producer has seen his career ascend since his breakthrough in 2016 with the release of his multi-million streaming hit, “Heaven on My Mind,” featuring Cardi B. All in all, Josh X has been prepping for his time in the limelight since childhood. The Queens native began playing the classical piano at the age of six and attended The Juilliard School’s summer program after receiving a scholarship from the prestigious musical institution. Inspired by music legends Stevie Wonder and Brian McKnight, Josh X’s music is brimming with themes of love and forgiveness, something he shares with his idols.
Prior to stepping in front of the mic, he served as a writer and producer, working with upper echelon artists such as Jadakiss, Swizz Beatz, Cardi B, Nipsy Hussle and Lil Wayne. After signing with Epic Record in 2018, Josh X released his single “All on Me” featuring Rick Ross. The ensuing music video has since been viewed over 5 million times.
Moreover, the Haitian-American singer and producer released the street smash, “Eskize Mwen” in 2020, featuring Haitian superstar, BAKY. The record showcased his diversity and the music video saw Josh X once again eclipse the 1 million views benchmark. During the pandemic, he picked up the role of Derrick in the Amazon Prime series, Sister’s Keeper. Although bitten by the acting bug, Josh X has not forgotten about his forever love.
On Saturday, December 10, Family of Woodstock (FOW), an upstate community service non-profit, will showcase “A Soul Train Christmas” at the Colony in Woodstock.
With doors opening at 7 and music beginning at 8, the event includes a holiday dance party and a winter clothing drive. It’s the non-profit’s third annual holiday collaboration with Eric Redd, a musical performer with over 40 years of international experience and a longtime Woodstock resident.

Also on the bill are Hudson Valley rockabilly and roots band Lara Hope and the Ark-Tonesand the gospel-influenced dance artist and DJ Disciple collaborator Dawn Tallman.
This is far from the first community concert for FOW, with other annual events including the Bob Dylan Birthday Bash and the John Herald Fund concerts, both of which have featured Redd in the past.
Eric Redd has enjoyed an enduring and diverse career. The Inglewood, CA native got his start at 16 years old as a dancer on “Soul Train,” a TV musical variety program curated by host Don Cornelius, which ran from 1971 to 2006.
His ensuing career has included appearances as a dancer in musical productions such as “Starlight Express” and “Cats,” a stint as lead vocalist for California Transit Authority, a band stemming from Danny Seraphine, the drummer of Chicago, and his 2014 full-length solo album, Give It Away.

Eight-time Grammy Award-winning superstar Anita Baker has announced performance dates for 2023. The Songstress’ tour will tour 15 different cities, and even making a stop at the UBS Arena in Elmont, on Friday May 12th, 2023.
The tour celebrates Baker’s 40 years as a music icon in the industry since the release of her debut album, The Songstress, which released in 1983. These dates mark the first time she has been on a full tour since 1995 and it is also the first time The Songstress will be performing her classic hits live since winning back the rights to her masters.

Anitia Baker, originally born in Toledo, OH, and raised in Detroit, MI, is one of the most popular singers of soulful ballads during the height of the quiet storm period in the 1980s. Starting her career in the late 1970s with the funk band Chapter 8, Baker released her first solo album, The Songstress, in 1983.
In 1986, Baker rose to stardom following the release of her Platinum-selling second album, Rapture, which included the Grammy-winning single “Sweet Love.” Baker has won eight Grammy Awards and has four Platinum albums. Baker is a contralto, with a vocal range that extends her register to at least three octaves.

Tank and the Bangas will kick off their six-night residency at New York’s iconic Jazz club Blue Note New York on November 11, and bring with them special guests, starting with GRAMMY winning singer and pianist Norah Jones. This will mark the first show Norah has done with Tank & the Bangas since 2017, aside from their performance on her podcast.
In addition to Jones, other special guests announced include Keyon Harrold, Big Freedia, Kat Edmonson, Brandee Younger, Isaiah Sharkey as well as surprise sit-ins. Tank and the Bangas will also spend two nights covering The Music of Green Balloon and The Music of Red Balloon.
Coming from New Orleans, Tank and the Bangas are surrounded by plenty of grand musical traditions. And the five-piece group has a rare knack for combining various musical styles- fiery soul, deft hip-hop, deep-groove R&B and subtle jazz- into one dazzling, cohesive whole that evokes the scope of New Orleans music while retaining a distinctive feel all its own. “It’s music that can’t really be put in a box,” says singer and poet Tarriona “Tank” Ball.
