    On their 2020 debut album What Happens After, Laveda draw a post-apocolyptic landscape through layers of colorful sound and ethereal melodies. The band fuses polished pop song clarity with a 90’s guitar driven sound reminiscent of groups like The Sundays or my bloody valentine. Founding members “Jacob Brooks and Ali Genevich explore the great yawning unknown. From the freedom and uncertainty that rests at your fingertips or the distant and possibly desolate future, they capture adolescent restlessness with big walls of sound and a dreamy melodious warble” writes Toronto based blog Ohestee. NYC’s Look At My Records! calls Laveda “a young band with a fully realized voice and perspective, and What Happens After couldn’t feel timelier.”

    See Plus, an indie-pop band from Rutherford, NJ, shines through on their new release, “The Sun.” For some people, despite the warm days, sunny skies, and perfect beach days, summer can be a depressing time filled with heartache and desolation.

Containing sunny vibrant chords, intimate lyrics on heartbreak, and charming percussion, the four-piece band shows that they can create indie bangers on the level of their contemporaries. “The Sun” is a must-have for any indie beach playlist this summer.

    The band is no stranger to the New York scene. Before the pandemic, the band played in city venues like Arlene’s Grocery, The Bitter End, and The Knitting Factory. With live music returning, they will be playing two shows in New Jersey. The first of these shows will be Debonair Music Hall on March 13th and the second of which will be at Ramapo College of New Jersey on March 22nd.

  • Big Boi, Cold War Kids to Perform at Sound Mind Music Festival for Mental Health in Central Park

    Sound Mind Live have announced their fourth annual Sound Mind Music Festival for Mental Health. The event will take place outside on May 21st at 4 PM in New York City’s Central Park. Performances include Cold War Kids, Big Boi, American Authors, KAMAUU, Wrabel, and Allison Russell. The event will be hosted by Bronx-raised comedian Gina Brillon.

    As brought into the public eye, the coronavirus pandemic has had a significant impact on a lot of people’s wellbeing and mental health. This year, the Sound Mind Music Festival for Mental Health will focus on the mental impact that this virus has imprinted on us. Artists will have the opportunity to share their own pandemic experiences and information will be readily available including mental health resources, suicide prevention resources, and self-care practices.

    Leading up to the event, Sound Mind Live will also host an open panel about mental health at Prime Produce Social Impact Cooperative on West 54th Street. Wrabel, ELSZ, and Pronoun will also perform stripped-down performances of their sets. The event will go deep into mental health struggles in the LGBTQ+ community, communities of color, and the music industry. The event is free and will begin at 5:30 PM. Those who are interested must register on the Sound Mind Live website beforehand.

    Two items will also be raffled off, a microphone signed by Big Boi and a drumhead signed by Cold War Kids. By signing a petition for improved crisis services, you will be granted three entries. Moreover, every dollar donated to Sound Mind Live grants you ten entries.

    For the first time, those unable to catch the event live can watch a live stream on TikTok. Tickets for the event go on sale Friday, March 11th at 10 AM ET. General admission tickets will cost $40 and VIP tickets will cost $149.50. For more information, go to www.soundmindlive.org.

  • Brooklyn Artist Becca Stevens releases first single “45 Bucks” off upcoming album

    GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter Becca Stevens and GRAMMY Award-winning Attacca Quartet announce their collaborate album, Becca Stevens | Attacca Quartet will drop April 22nd. The first song off the collaborative album, “45 Bucks” along with accompanying live performance video are out now.

    The album’s track-list reflects Becca’s journey and growth as an artist. Ready for the challenge, Attacca joined Stevens decade’s worth of music that continues to prove her music capabilities. The tracklist consist of 14 songs with arrangements from Liam Robinson, Bill Stevens (Becca’s brother), Stephen Prutsman, Becca Stevens, William Stevens (Becca’s father), Michael Ippolito, and Nathan Schram.

    The song started as an attempt to ‘take the high road’ by putting frustrations to music rather than escalating a no-win situation with a next-door neighbor, and evolved into an ode to several folks who have let me down throughout my life.

    A Brooklyn-based artist, Stevens established a career back in 2013 with pianist, composer, and conductor Steven Prutsman who sparked the idea of initial string arrangement. The Attacca Quartet is filled with stylistic versatility that arranges perfectly with Becca who’s inspiration comes from pop, jazz, indie-rick, and Appalachian folk music.

    Becca’s 2020 “Wonderbloom” album landed the artist her first GRAMMY-nomination and Attacca’s first GRAMMY Award-win in 2019 with their album “Orange.”

  • Acid Dad Captivates Crowd in Collar City Debut

    Brooklyn based alternative buzz band Acid Dad brought their “A” game to Troy on Frida, March 4th, mesmerizing fans at the collar city’s newest live music night spot, No Fun. Conveniently located along River Street, despite the club’s name good times were aplenty as the band dropped a heavy dose of their signature psychedelic shoegaze sound; a sonic assault of fuzz infused feedback, groove-heavy basslines, relevant and catchy lyrics complete with an atmospheric 60’s-style liquid drop lightshow that would have made even a young Syd Barret feel at home.

    Consisting of duel singer/guitarist duo Vaughn Hunt and Sean Fahey, drummer Trevor Mustoe, and on this night bassist Zoltán Sindhu, who was performing double duty after opening the show with NYC’s Programmique, Acid Dad have been riding a steady wave of growth since Vaughn first started recording the band’s debut EP in a Bushwick basement in 2016. During the pandemic, the guys made good use of their time by building a new recording space in Queens, while also continuing to independently produce all their own music, art and even build some of their own instruments.  The end result was  their latest LP, ‘Take It From The Dead,’  which “dropped” last summer on Brooklyn’s Greenway Records and psych powerhouse LEVITATION’s label, The Reverberation Appreciation Society. 

    Originally scheduled to play “No Fun” in early February, Acid Dad finally made their Troy debut this past Friday, March 4th.   Playing to a diverse crowd ranging from college students, hipsters, plane jane’s, punks, drunks, die hards, posers, nerds, frat boys, Dead heads, lo-life’s, sell-outs, some cool dudes and a few people still somehow in between, the multi-generational appeal of Acid Dead was apparent from the start. In contrast to lyrics contained in their song “Searchin’” that claim the band is “still stuck in the 70’s” Acid Dad has clearly ingested a multitude of influences that span all eras of music. With a sound the brings to mind influential “do it yourself” indie bands of the late 90’s like The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols, Acid Dad have steadily built on those foundations and steadily developed their own unique, catchier spin on the timeless distorted guitar-based genre.

    Just a block away from Troy’s Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, Acid Dad opened their set Friday night with the single “BBQ.” Featuring an infectious bass-heavy groove matched by a searing twin guitar attack and an utterly hypnotic light show, fans dug it from the get-go. Following that were intoxicating renditions of “Brain Body,” “She Only Eats Organic,” and the aforementioned “Seachin’” By the time Acid Dad reached the opening chords of the thought provoking “Marine,” the band was firing on cylinders so hot, jackets in the once freezing room were no longer needed.   Taking a moment to tune up, the slow burn closer of their self-titled debut album “Dissin’ was next, followed in contrast by the opening track of the same album, “Die Hard.”

    From there came perhaps the most well received song on the evening, the lead single from their latest release, “RC Driver.” Keeping the energy high with the relentless driving rhythm of “Living with a Creature” here the young guitar slingers really cut loose, letting their hair fly while thrashing about the stage and indulging in their effects pedals.   Another highlight on the night followed that in the form of “Djembe,” where the Brian Jonestown Massacre’s influence, circa “Give it Back!” era, could really be heard.

    Taking a moment to address the audience before the start of the next song, Vaughn Hunt openly talked about the escalating situation in the Ukraine and that despite writing “Mr. Major” five years ago, it’s taken on a whole new relevance in recent weeks. While fans soon realized this might be a moment worth capturing on their phones, the band then launched into a particularly heartfelt version of it, giving it everything they had left in the tank and bringing the set to a close. Despite the diversity within the mixed collar city crowd, the they were unified in their overwhelming approval and in their pleas for one more song. Happy to oblige, the exciting young band came back out for a fitting encore of “Don’t Get Taken.”  Afterwards the hardworking and down to earth guys could be seen mingling with fans, both new and old, while selling their wares at the merch table.

    Singing songs about everything from drug addiction and dead friends, explicit sex and failed relationships to corporate greed and communism, don’t be fooled by their bunk name.  Acid Dad are for real.  Young, passionate, authentic, and believable.  With a catchy recipe of heavy garage riffs mixed with a little punk, some post-rock vibes, a dose of new wave and plenty of sprawling sonic distortion, the only thing testing higher than their potential pH levels is their potential to become one of New York’s most relevant bands.  With a huge spring on the horizon that includes a national tour with Australia’s Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and a confirmed slot on the ridiculously stacked Shakey Knee’s Music Festival in Atlanta, it would seem the best is yet to come and that Acid Dad is still far from peaking.

  • Savak, A Brooklyn Post-Punk Quartet, Release “Empathy”

    SAVAK have shared their newest track “Empathy” from their upcoming fifth album, Human Error / Human Delight, which releases on April 15, 2022. “Empathy” debuted via New Noise Magazine, who contemplated “SAVAK’s fascination with the balanced, and sometimes polarizing, nature of being alive.”

    The Brooklyn Post-Punk Quartet have also added to their upcoming run of U.S. 2022 tour dates, visiting places in Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC and more. In addition, performing with the band Jawbox, see below for the full list of currently announced dates. The band wrote and recorded Human Error / Human Delight completely over Zoom, having crafted an honest album on living in our present moment.

    SAVAK consists of Sohrab Habibion and Michael Jaworski, with Matt Schulz on drums. Additionally, Habibion and Jaworrski both share singing and songwriting duties since the band’s creation in 2015. Though SAVAK’s members have done time in bands like Obits, Edsel, Holy Fuck and more, their current position is the best in which they have been.

  • In Focus: Annie in the Water Album Release show at The Hollow

    On Friday, March 4th, fans gathered at The Hollow in Albany to watch as Annie in the Water celebrated their long-awaited album release with special guests The Pine Hill Trio. From start to finish, it was an incredible night for music lovers. Packed with extraordinary talent, these two bands brought new songs; a ton of surprises; and even some special treats for all of us lucky enough to be there.

    To get the party started The Pine Hills Trio took the stage. If you haven’t heard of them yet, you’re going to. This trio of young college students is a brand new band and they are here to play. Ronan Dougherty (guitar/vocals) has a voice far larger and more developed than most musicians twice his age. With Dylan Neiderauer on bass and Chris Arcoleo on drums, it’s impossible to tell they have only been playing together a few months. And if you recognize that last name, Dylan’s brother is well-known guitar wunderkind Brandon ‘Taz’ Neiderauer.

    Annie in the Water play an epic Two-Hour Set

    Then it was time for the main event — and calling it an event is an understatement. Personally, I have seen this band play dozens of times and never heard them sound better than they did this night. For the first half of their set, they played their new album Sun at Dawn from start to finish.

    Annie in the Water – Brad Hester (vocals/lead guitar), Matt Richards (keys/vocals), Brock Kuka (percussion/vocals), Michael Lashomb (guitar/vocals), Chris Meier (bass/vocals), and Ryan Trumball (drums) – stepped up on their jam game in a way that is truly mind-blowing considering the music hiatus of the two years.

    For the second half of their set, the boys from Annie in the Water played whatever they felt like. Without a set break these dudes continued to bring the hammer down. They played everything from older Annie tunes to a hard-rocking cover from Rage Against the Machine. They topped off their set with a jam on their popular “Hey I’m on the Way” that transcended time and space.

  • Mountain Jam won’t be held until 2023

    A festival staple of the Catskills, Mountain Jam, has recently announced the event will return in 2023. Last held in 2019 at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the festival, presented by Radio Woodstock and Warren Haynes, Mountain Jam will return to Bethel Woods for the 2023 installment.

    Despite the 4 year hiatus, the festival looks to return strong, boasting four days of music on three stages, featuring more than 40 artists.

    At Bethel Woods, the home of the original 1969 Woodstock Festival, Mountain Jam has embraced a wide array of musicians, with a focus on rock, jam and indie bands over the festival’s history, which started in 2005.

    In 2011, Pollstar recognized Mountain Jam with a nomination for Music Festival of the Year. The Festival offers 3-day festival tickets with and without camping, premium Jammer (VIP), Super Jammer (Super VIP) and Ultimate Jammer Passes, and single day tickets. On-site camping and condos, and a variety of nearby hotels, lodges and ski chalets offer attendees a wide variety of accommodations.

  • Nation of Language Pave The Way Forward At Webster Hall

    Brooklyn locals Nation of Language kicked off a six week North America tour earlier this week and on Thursday, March 3rd the band landed at Webster Hall for their fourth hometown show in the past 6 months. The trio has been rocketing in popularity ever since the release of their excellent sophomore album, A Way Forward, on PIAS Records.

    The band played the 2021 edition of Governor’s Ball back in September and NYS Music’s Steve Malinski caught up with the group during the festival. Check out the full interview and photos from their Gov Ball performance HERE.

    Webster Hall is the largest headlining show Nation of Language has played in NYC since forming. The band played the significantly smaller Market Hotel for a one-off show in November but this tour has them playing larger clubs all across North America. Blending bright synth-pop beats with passionate vocals and an enormous stage presence from frontman Ian Richard Devaney the band captivates the audience with an extremely minimal backline. Leaning on recorded drum samples, the stage only contained Aidan Noell’s synth table on the far left, two microphones, and a handful of pedals. Ian used every square inch of open stage to dance and just keep moving while singing and playing guitar.

    Nation of language fittingly began the show at Webster with A Way Forward opening track “In Manhattan.” The set was roughly split with tracks from both of their albums including their self-released debut Introduction, Presence.   • Gooseberry Releases Melancholic Yet Electrifying Single: “Sleep”

    Gooseberry show a ton of promise. The four-piece band met through the Brooklyn music scene and consists of Asa Daniels on guitar and vocals, Evin Rossington on drums, Sam Rappaport on keys and vocals, and Will Hammond on bass.

    The band has played in classic venues across the city like The Bowery Electric and The Knitting Factory. They have also written and released several singles since they were formed in 2019. The synthesis of these factors have allowed Gooseberry to develop a definitive sound and a deep sense of confidence in their delivery.

    This confidence reigns through on their newest indie release, “Sleep,” which highlights their potential. Much like “Come A Little Closer” from Cage The Elephant, the track has a soulful body over which a whimsical battle between melancholic vocals and electrifyingly chaotic breakdowns occurs. The sum of these genre-bending characteristics all equates to an indie culmination of sonic mastery.

    The band blends and switches between sounds with such grace, you would think the four had been playing together for years. However, quite the opposite reigns true. Although the band has only been together for two and half years, they play like they have a decade under their belt. With that being said, “Sleep” is sure to become an underground indie classic and a staple piece in the band’s discography.

    In association with the single’s release, the band has announced the release date for their debut EP, Broken Dance, which is set to release May 6th. So long as the contents on the EP are a fraction of what the band displayed on “Sleep,” it is sure to be a banger.
