  • Bobby Weir Announces “50th Anniversary of Ace” with Two Nights at Radio City Music Hall

Bobby Weir and Wolf Bros have announced their two night stand at Radio City Music Hall, in celebration of Ace’s 50th anniversary. The special performances will be taking place April 2-3, 2022.

    Bobby Weir

The two night stand will feature performances of Grateful Dead classics that were written by Weir, including ‘Greatest Story Ever Told’, ‘Cassidy’, ‘Playing In The Band’, ‘Looks Like Rain’ and more. These shows will feature several unannounced special guests, including The Wolfpack, which consists of a dedicated strings section.

Released on May 1, 1972, Ace was Weir’s first solo album, although many consider it a Grateful Dead album, due to the fact that his band members make appearances throughout the project. A majority of the songs on Ace also made appearances on other Grateful Dead albums, including their 1971 self-titled and Skeletons from the Closet

As the one of the original pioneers of concert sound, the Grateful Dead have cemented their place in musical history. The founding members were Bob Weir, Jerry Garcia, Rob “Pigpen” McKernan, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann.

Following the release of his latest album, Live in Colorado, Bobby Weir and Wolf Bros will also be touring the US from 3/9 to 10/9. Tickets for Ace’s 50th anniversary concerts, as well as Weir’s regular tour, are currently on sale here.

  • Movie Club to Honor 55th Anniversary of Frank Zappa’s NYC Residency

Venice Beach rock duo, Movie Club, will be honoring Frank Zappa’s legendary residency with a three-day residency of their own in Brooklyn. The tribute to Zappa will run from March 23rd to March 25th.

    Movie Club
    PC : Nick Cuneo

Frank Zappa’s month-long residency came about following an unsuccessful stint within the West Coast music scene. After getting in contact with Garrick Theatre in NYC, Zappa set up a month-long residency, starting March 23rd, 1967 which would eventually turn into a piece of musical history. His residency featured spontaneous performance from his band, The Mothers of Invention,  as well as visits from other musicians including Jimi Hendrix.

Zappa’s residency lives on in memory due to its purely creative and bizarre nature. During performances, the band would improvise their acts and pull people from the crowd to come on stage. These one-of-a-kind nights are exactly what Movie Club aim to bring to life within their own performances at the all inclusive, queer owned venue, C’mon Everybody in Crown Heights.

    Movie Club
    PC : Nick Cuneo

The duo, consisting of guitarist Vince Cuneo and drummer Jessamyn Violet, will be performing for three nights, with musical guests ranging from rappers, to drag queens. Guitarist Vince Cuneo says that “The goal of these shows is collaboration and to make each night a one-of-a-kind experience for both the audience and the artists on stage”

Tickets, as well as more information, are available here.

  • Vessels to Motherland Brings You Inside the Machine With New LP ‘Machine Lieder’

Electroacoustic duo Vessels to Motherland have recently released their debut album, Machine Lieder. The project transports listeners into the world of machines and engulfs them in a brand new environment.

    Vessels to Motherland

Machine Lieder has an impressive, well thought out back story that allows listeners to truly sink into the project and visualize what they hear. Created by machines, this collection of songs combines human emotions with cold metal shells and expresses the complexity of the modern world.

Vessels to Motherland consists of composer, producer and pianist, Danica Borisavljevic and composer, producer and violinist Nikita Morozov. The experience gained from being classically trained has created the base from which their ideas blossom and evolve.

The NYC duo have recently collaborated with the NY Institute for the Humanities and Social Studies to found “NYC Keyboard Fest”, a one day festival focused on showcasing keyboard performances.

‘Rusty’ serves as the album’s transition between its more minimal beginning and the intensity of its later tracks. An almost sullen mundanity settles in the listeners mind as they are exposed to the inner toil of the machines. It passes as quickly as it comes.

‘Terminal Circuit’ brings you deeper into this new universe as the otherworldly sound continues to craft the story around you. It almost feels as though tension is building inside you as you get further into the song. Pressure builds and then suddenly vanishes as the song ends with one final synthetic wail.

‘Tghtr’ is the last song on the album and serves as the perfect ending to the strange journey Vessels to Motherland has taken you on. Lowkey synths intertwine with the hypnotizing beat until heavy distortion pushes you out near the very end of the track.

Machine Lieder is available now on all streaming platforms, as well as Bandcamp

Key Tracks : Rusty, Terminal Circuit, Tghtr

  • The Met to Cut Ties With Putin Allied Artists

As Russia continues their advance on Ukraine, many organizations are choosing to cut ties with Russian government allies. The Met has joined this list by cutting ties with artists and institutions that support or are supported by Putin.

New York‘s iconic opera house has issued a statement regarding Putin’s invasion, standing in solidarity with Ukraine and supporting their resistance efforts. As an international opera company, the Met hopes to use their status to raise awareness and urge government officials to condemn Putin’s actions.

The Met’s general manager, Peter Gelb, didn’t specify which artists and institutions would be cut, but according to NPR, there are three figures that could be at risk. The Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, conductor Valery Gergiev and soprano Anna Netrebko have all been allied with Putin in the past.

It’s terrible that artistic relationships, at least temporarily, are the collateral damage of these actions by Putin.

    Met General Manager, Peter Gelb

They will also be staging a March 14th concert to raise funds for Ukraine. The opera will be performing the Ukrainian national anthem, as well as “Prayer for Ukraine” by composer Valentin Silvestrov. Other organizations, including City Winery and New York’s College of Performing Arts, will be hosting their own charity events.

  • Rule Them All Releases New Single ‘Uneasy Faith’

Long Island hardcore band, Rule Them All, are back with their new single ‘Uneasy Faith’ off their split with Kill Your Idols. The split features four songs, with two by Rule Them All and two by Kill Your Idols.

    Rule Them All

‘Uneasy Faith’ is a blunt, but melodic track that draws listeners in with dynamic riffs and deep lyrical meaning. Centered around the idea of taking chances even when success seems unlikely, it gives listeners the added boost they might have needed to get through a tough situation.

“Sometimes, the only thing you have behind you when you take a leap of faith is belief in yourself and even then it’s not enough. It deals with the idea that expectation can hinder your progress and can even deter you from leaping all together.”

    Vocalist Jon Gusman

During production of the split, both bands recorded with Kill Your Idols drummer, Anthony Corallo. KYI’s tracks were mixed and mastered by Will Killingsworth, while Rule Them All’s tracks were mixed and mastered by Brian McTernan.

    PC : Matt Viel

Formed in 2017, Rule Them All aims to blend vintage and modern styles of hardcore rock while keeping the Long Island aggression that they’re known for. Solid riffs and hard hitting drums keep fans coming back for more as they continue to etch out their place in NY musical history.

‘Uneasy faith’ is available now on all streaming platforms, with the vinyl coming out on 7/22. More information about the band can be found here.
