  • Billy Strings and Willie Nelson highlight Outlaw Music Festival at SPAC

On an overcast and at times rainy Sunday, Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) was home to more than a concert, but instead the day long Outlaw Music Festival, with Particle Kid, Brittney Spencer, Larkin Poe, Billy Strings, The Avett Brothers and the legendary Willie Nelson.

    outlaw music festival SPAC

The Outlaw Village, located towards the back of SPAC’s renovated concession area, featured a variety of vendors like you’d see at a festival or your nearest Shakedown Street. A packed crowd was lively and excited to see the new (Particle Kid, Brittney Spencer), the rising star (Billy Strings), Americana (Larkin Poe, Avett Brothers) and the old (Willie Nelson, closing in on 9 decades).

Billy Strings simply stole the show, and it seemed that the crowd was mainly there for the rising Nashville star (via Michigan). In fact, it could easily be argued that Billy Strings should have played just prior to Willie Nelson, flipping slots with Avett Brothers. Granted, Avett Brothers have been around for over 20 years, but the energy and draw of Billy Strings far outweighs the Americana of the Avetts. Having Billy and his high power set precede Avetts left the latter’s set feeling like something was lacking, and the speed was lower tempo and inconsistent by comparison.

When you factor in that the gracious Billy Strings thanked Willie, not just from the microphone, but in the setlist as well – spelling out THANK YOU WILLIE over the course of 14 songs in a 75Minute set. Highlights from the set included covers of Pearl Jam’s “In Hiding” and Bill Monroe’s “Uncle Pen.”

Billy Strings Setlist: Turmoil and Tinfoil, Hollow Heart, Away From the Mire, Nothing’s Working, Know It All, Y’all Come, Old Mexico, Uncle Pen, West Dakota Rose, If Your Hair’s Too Long (There’s Sin in Your Heart), Love and Regret, Libby Phillips Rag, In Hiding, Everything’s the Same

The 89 year old Willie Nelson followed Avett Brothers with four band mates tore through a set that the audience waited patiently for, kicking things off with his classic “Whiskey River.” Bringing out grandson Micah Nelson (Particle Kid) for “Everything is Bullshit,” ” Halfway to Heaven” and “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys” plus a few other tunes was an excellent touch; the set brought to mind Farm Aid in 2013 at SPAC, where Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real performed a short set and later joined his pater familias.

To close out Outlaw Music Festival at SPAC, Willie invited all the days performers to the stage for “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?” and a finale of Mac Davis’ “It’s Hard to Be Humble.”

  • Rammstein Deliver One of their Best Ever Live Performances at Metlife Stadium

Rammstein brought their long-anticipated U.S. Stadium Tour to MetLife Stadium on Tuesday, September 6th. This performance was initially scheduled for September 10, 2020 but had been postponed two years in a row due to COVID-19.

The evening was an absolute downpour as tens of thousands of fans filled into one of the largest NFL stadiums in the country. While not overly cold, it was definitely a wet experience that fortunately slowed down as it got closer to showtime.

    rammstein

One cannot talk about Rammstein without mentioning their stage presence. Over the years the band has had it fair share of controversy with the different “acts” they have performed on stage, and of course the sheer amount of fire and pyrotechnics they bring. This stadium show Rammstein has now magnifies anything they have previously done ten-fold. The stage itself cost over 6 million dollars and takes four days to assemble. With massive towers to accompany the stage that fill the inside of the stadium resemble fire coming off an oil rig, walking into the stadium to this was truly a sight to behold.

At approximately 8pm the lights went dark, and the crowd erupted in anticipation as a massive explosion on stage began Rammstein’s epic performance. Opening up the set with “Armee der Tristen” the band members make their way on stage from an elevator platform underneath that brought them up.

Rammstein performed a massive 21 song set that included a good mix of their new material as well as fan favorites. During the performance of “Puppe” a large baby carriage is brought onto the stage and burned while video shows a demonic baby doll spewing insects from its mouth. This is all capped off by confetti cannons shooting black confetti all over the crowd which really brought this scene to life.

For the acoustic performance of “Engel”, the band jumped into inflatable pontoon boats and surfed their way to a smaller stage in the middle of the crowd. Returning the main stage, the band went right back into their industrial-heavy “Auslander” which had the audience singing along.

The entire performance was nonstop fire, explosions and mayhem. The climax of all of this was during the band’s second encore performance of “Rammstein” in which Lindermann wears a pyro backpack that shoots out a barrage of fireballs around him while singing, as well as the stage erupting in flames, as well as the towers throughout the stadium.

This Rammstein show is one of their greatest live shows to date, with nonstop fire, explosions, fireworks and flamethrowers. There was even a cannon that came out which Lindermann mounted and sprayed the crowd in foam. It’s easy to make the comparison that you could be smack dab in the middle of Mordor while all of this is happening, and truly a show where words just can’t do it justice.

Setlist: Armee der Tristen > Zick Zack > Links 2-3-4 > Sehnsucht > Zeig dich > Mein Herz brennt > Puppe > Heirate mich >Zeit > Deutschland > Radio > Mein Teil > Du hast > Sonne> Engel > Auslander > Du riechst so gut > Pussy > Rammstein >Ich will > Adieu

  • Paul McCartney Returns to Syracuse for Epic Performance

Sir Paul McCartney returned to Syracuse on Saturday, June 4th to open up the first concert at the JMA Wireless Dome (formerly Carrier Dome). With a near full capacity crowd of over 35,000 in attendance, Paul McCartney was ready to rock Syracuse with a nearly three hour set.

    Sir Paul McCartney Syracuse

With mounting anticipation, the show began around 8:20 p.m., as Paul McCartney took the stage to a massive roar of applause alongside his backing band which included Brian Ray, Rusty Anderson, Paul Wickens, and Abe Laboriel, Jr. Seeming to really take in the Syracuse welcome, McCartney walked around the stage briefly waving to the crowd and smiling before putting his hand up into the air behind the mic and kicking off the set with The Beatles classic, “Can’t Buy Me Love.”

Throughout the set, fans were treated to his versatility in playing multiple instruments which included piano, bass, guitar, and ukulele. When McCartney wasn’t singing or playing an instrument, he engaged the audience with stories and memories with other members of the Beatles.

The concert featured tons of Beatles hits, including “Lady Madonna”, “You Never Give Me Your Money”, “Blackbird.” The energy of the crowd only grew as the set progressed later into the evening with the audience singing popular tunes, “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” and “Get Back.” Continuing on with some of the biggest hits including “Band on the Run” into a sing along of “Let it Be” followed by a fiery display of pyrotechnics and fireworks during “Live and Let Die.”

The climax of the performance this evening was during “Hey Jude” when the entire audience sung along for several minutes to the “Na na na Na Na Na Na!” This was one of the most amazing experiences to be a part of with just a feeling of unity among everyone, especially given vast struggles currently in the world.

Paul McCartney left the stage saying goodnight, however not many people were so easily convinced that he was done. As if his 30-song set wasn’t enough, the band returned to the stage with thundering applause waving the Ukranian Flag, UK Flag, Pride Flag, and New York Flag.

With a massive 6-song encore that included favorites such as “I’ve Got a Feeling” which McCartney performed essentially a duet with John Lennon. The screens broadcast footage of Lennon performing on a rooftop from Peter Jackson’s “Get Back” documentary, which sounded as if he were on stage performing right there with Paul and synched perfectly. Finishing out the encore with “Helter Skelter”, “Golden Slumbers”, “Carry That Weight”, and ending with the fitting Beatle song “The End.” Paul McCartney delivered what many can consider the greatest concert they have ever seen.

Being able to witness the inspiration for just about all modern music was awe-inspiring. Paul McCartney has a way about him that just commands your attention, and the performance he continues to give over a 60-year career as he pushes 80 years old cements his legacy as an all time great. This was truly a unifying and magical music experience that I would recommend anyone to see if given the chance.

  • In Focus: Primus at Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards

Primus brought their “A Tribute To Kings” US Tour to Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards in Lafayette, Saturday, May 29th. This tour is especially fun because it is two separate sets, with the first one being strictly Primus and the second being Rush’s hit album A Fairwell to Kings.

Les Claypool is one of the greatest bass players and man did he slap at this concert. With smooth transitions and build ups, Primus performed 10 of some of their most fun and groovy songs on their first set. Starting off with a packed crowd chanting “Primus Sucks!”, Primus takes to the stage with the bassline of “Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers” which set the mood for the rest of the evening.

    Primus Beak and Skiff

Primus flawlessly played through the first set, stopping a few times to talk to the audience as well as doing a quick costume change to wear a pig mask for the performance of “Lacquer Head”. Primus played fan favorites such as “Seas of Cheese”, “Spegetti Western”, and “Professor Nutbutter’s House of Treats” before closing out the first set with “Shake Hands With Beef”, leaving everyone wanting more.

The band took a 20-minute intermission before beginning their second set of Rush. Opening with “A Farewell to Kings” into “Xanadu” showcased Les Claypool’s guitar playing as well as his vocal range. Hearing him perform songs other than Primus was really interesting and put a different spin on the band which was fun to watch. Following up with “Closer to the Heart”, Les Claypool mentioned how difficult the vocals are to perform, and that Rush fans are typically very critical while bringing up his own admiration for Rush, and how they were his first concert. The crowd applauded and cheered showing their support and satisfaction of the performance. Closing out the Rush set with “Cinderella Man” into “Madrigal” and ending with “Cygnus X-1” the crowd was roaring in applause.

    Primus Beak and Skiff

Primus wasn’t done yet though, and with an epic 4 song encore of “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver” > “Welcome to This World” > “My Name is Mud” > “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver” the band closed out their show with the best possible songs they could have played. Seeing Primus is always an absolute treat, and this was no different here. The atmosphere at Beak & Skiff was incredible, the drinks were delicious, and the view was beautiful. Having Primus perform for over 2 hours was a fantastic experience, and one that will make me want to come back for more shows at Beak & Skiff.

Setlist: Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers > Lacquer Head > Seas of Cheese > Mr. Krinkle > Spegetti Western > Groundhog’s Day > Conspiranoia > Professor Nutterbutter’s House of Treats > Del Davis Tree Farm > Shake Hands With Beef.

Setlist 2(Rush A Tribute To Kings): A Farewell to Kings > Xanadu > Closer to the Heart > Cinderella Man > Madrigal > Cygnus X-1

Encore: Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver > Welcome to This World > My Name is Mud > Jerry Was a Race Car Driver

  • Infected Rain brings “Ecdysis” Tour to Rochester

Infected Rain is on a month-long US Tour in support of the band’s latest album, Ecdysis and performed at The Montage Music Hall in Rochester on Friday, May 20. With the band being from Moldova, an eastern European country that borders Ukraine and Romania, it is a rare treat to see them in the United States.

    infected rain

The Montage had a good turnout for what ended up being just Infected Rain and supporting act, Gone In April. Three local bands were scheduled to perform, but due to unforeseen circumstances all of these acts dropped off. This made for what turned out to be an intimate, but in your face metal show that fans will surely remember.

Taking the stage at 8:30pm, Infected Rain made their entrance to an energized audience that greeted them with applause and cheers. The band went right into full throttle mode with their hit “Pendulum” and while a smaller crowd, the band performed as if they were playing in front of thousands of people. The energy Lena Scissorhands puts off as she is screaming, and singing is captivating. You can tell she actually really enjoys performing with the constant engagement with the audience and smiled after hearing applause from each song they finish.

    infected rain

I have been waiting awhile to finally see Infected Rain, and it was exciting to see them in a small intimate setting with not an overly crowded venue to really be able to appreciate the performance. It’s honestly one of my favorite things about The Montage, and I have seen several of my favorite artists perform there before they have really blown up in popularity.

Infected Rain put on a fantastic 12 song set which included in my opinion, their best songs they could have chosen. Just about all of their songs are heavy hitting, in your face, make you want to mosh kind of feeling and the only disappointing thing about their set was that it was only 12 songs. This is definitely a band worth seeing, they are fun, energetic, and passionate when they play. Lena Scissorhands is a fantastic frontwoman that definitely gives off Tatiana from Jinjer vibes, and I mean that in the best way possible. Hopefully someday we can get a Jinjer, Infected Rain tour that comes to the US.

Setlist: Pendulum > Mold > Black Gold > Longing > The Earth Mantra > The Realm of Chaos > Postmortem Pt. 1 > Passerby > Fighter > Orphan Soul > Fool the Gravity > Sweet, Sweet Lies

  • Killswitch Engage Unleash Atonement Tour in Rochester

Metalcore titans Killswitch Engage brought their Atonement Tour to Rochester at the Main Street Armory with August Burns Red and Light The Torch. With only a couple shows left to go on their U.S. run, all the bands still gave it their all and the crowd was singing along to every song.

Opening the night was Light The Torch, fronted by Howard Jones who was Killswitch Engage’s previous singer before Jesse Leach came back. Both Howard and Jesse contributed some of the best Killswitch material they have released, and it is always a great pleasure to see when there’s no bad blood between artists and they tour together. Immediately starting their set, Howard Jones takes to the dim it stage to a roar of applause from the crowd. Not holding back, Light The Torch goes right into “More Than Dreaming”, which showcases Howard’s vocals in both his cleans and screams.

After listening to Killswitch Engage for so long, and not being too familiar with Light The Torch’s work, it is difficult to not compare this band with the sound Howard brought with his time in Killswitch. There are some similarities, however that is mostly due to Howard having a fantastic voice that just carries to whatever project he is working on. Light The Torch had a 10 song set that was basically nonstop from start to finish. Some of their hard hitting songs such as “Calm Before The Storm”, “Death of Me”, and “Become the Martyr” really set the mood for the evening and did a great job of energizing the audience. Closing out their set with “Die Alone” Howard told the crowd how much it means to him to be able to still perform after experiencing a dark time, and how fortunate he is to have his band members with him. “I fucking love this so much, thank you, thank you, thank you!” he says before giving the crowd the metal horns and ending their set.

August Burns Red wasted no time coming out swinging with “The Truth of a Liar”. Immediately, it’s like a switch is hit, going from Light The Torch’s dimly lit set to a full blown lightshow and fog machines. August Burns Red didn’t slow down at all for their set, feeding off of the crowds energy as mosh pits emerged and crowd surfers started flowing. The bands vocalist, Jake Luhrs, commanded the crowd with his stage presence as he moved around swinging the microphone and jumping up onto their platforms. Highlights of their set included a very surprising cover of the “Legend of Zelda” theme song right into “Mariana’s Trench”. Performing for just under an hour, August Burns Red really delivered a great performance. This was many of the attendees first time seeing them live, as shown by a raise of hands when asked by Jake Luhrs who’s first time it was, and it was clear they won over many new fans.

After a quick teardown of the August Burns Red set, Killswitch Engage is ready to take the stage. Opening with “Unleashed” off their latest album, was the perfect introduction. Since this was one of the final shows of the tour, you would expect the band to be a little worn out, however this was not the case. Jesse Leach ran around the stage full of energy, singing and screaming the songs with as much enthusiasm as you’d expect on the opening night.

Killswitch Engage always puts on a fantastic show, and this night was no different. The banter between guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz and the crowd provided a comedic value that is almost expected at a Killswitch show. With fan favorites to sing along to such as “My Last Serenade”, “Daylight Dies”, and “My Curse” it was a pleasure to hear a combination of their older material as well as their new stuff. The highlight of their set was definitely when Killswitch brought Howard Jones on stage to sing two of their most well-known songs, “The End of Heartache” and “Rose of Sharyn”. This set the crowd into a massive sing along which was so much fun. Ending their set with a duet of “The Signal Fire”, Killswitch Engage delivered one of the best metal tours so far this year.

Setlist: Unleashed > Hate by Design > Know Your Enemy > My Last Serenade > I Am Broken Too > Reckoning > In Due Time > Daylight Dies > This Fire > As Sure as the Sun Will Rise > The Crownless King > Irreversal > Always > My Curse > Strength of the Mind > Rose of Sharyn(with Howard Jones) > The End of Heartache(with Howard Jones) > The Signal Fire(with Howard Jones)

  • Tool Brings a Psychedelic Masterpiece to Buffalo

On Sunday, February 27, nearly 20,000 fans packed into the KeyBank Center in Buffalo to witness one of the most unique rock bands around, Tool. One of the most mysterious and eye catching shows you can witness, with really incredible visuals produced by the band’s guitarist, Adam Jones, Tool last played in the region in May 2017 at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, and had since released their critically acclaimed album Fear Inoculum which this tour supported.

    tool buffalo
TOOL KeyBank Center in Buffalo, NY

Fans poured into the arena in high spirits to be greeted to a stage obscured by a translucent curtain.
Tool is known for two things at their concerts, one being the absolute incredible visuals, and the other
is their extremely strict no cell phone/camera policy. Signs were plastered all over the venue, even in
the bathrooms to warn fans that all types of photography and video were prohibited and could result in
ejection. You would think people would see this and take it seriously, right?

    tool buffalo

As the lights went out in the stadium and the translucent curtain that wrapped around the stage began to light up, the band members began to make their entrance onto the stage. When Danny Carey, one of the greatest drummers of all time made his entrance with a quick wave before sitting at his impressive drum kit, the arena erupted in cheers. Next followed both Adam Jones and Justin Chancellor as they begin jamming the self-titled song off the album Fear Inoculum. Maynard James Keenan then kind of crept his way to the back platform, appearing as a silhouette with a mowhawk.

    tool buffalo
    Maynard James Keenan / TOOL

The visuals kicked right up to 11 as Tool began their set. The slow start to their songs begin often soft
and soothing and transform into a powerful climax over the course of 10 minutes. One thing about the
no cellphone policy is it truly allows you and everyone else to really appreciate the production of the
show. While most attendees followed the guidance, there were definitely some who took the risk of
trying to film. These individuals would quickly be spotted by security and their led flashlights shined right
at their face as a warning, before being escorted out of the venue.

Throughout the set, Maynard prowled the back of the stage like a caged animal. This is his M.O as he
previously has stated that the other members playing the instruments deserve the focus. Most of
Tool’s performance featured elaborate and complex grooves met with bursts of ferocity and visuals to
match. Both Justin and Adam played very well off each other, and Danny Carey absolutely killed it on the
drums. You could feel the power behind the extremely complex time signatures he would play, and
being able to watch him perform was very enjoyable.

Highlights of Tool’s performance included the translucent curtain slowly opening to reveal the band
during their performance of “Pushit” in dramatic fashion as vivid hallucinatory imagery encompassed
the band. Danny Carey’s absolutely insane drum solo titled “Chocolate Chip Trip,” which had overhead
cameras displaying on the backdrop allowing everyone to witness his insane skill and speed as he played
    to a synthesizer.

    tool buffalo
    Adam Jones / TOOL

Before playing the final song of the night, Maynard spoke for the second time of the evening saying
thank you and then allowing everyone to record the last song with their cellphones. The only request he
had was to “turn off you’re fucking lights, if you don’t know how, ask your phone.. it’s a smart phone.”
The band then went into “Invincible” which was an epic finish to their performance.

Going to a Tool concert is more like an immersive experience of watching songs come to life with mind blowing visuals and people in the shadows playing the instruments. The band doesn’t talk in-between songs like many other artists do, and the entire focus of the event is strictly on the music itself. They are truly unique in a time when many musicians sound similar to others, and Tool shows no signs of slowing down.
