{"id":270,"date":"2021-03-14T15:11:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-14T15:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/2021\/2021\/03\/14\/sulene-releases-introspective-hedonic\/"},"modified":"2021-03-14T15:11:00","modified_gmt":"2021-03-14T15:11:00","slug":"sulene-releases-introspective-hedonic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/2021\/2021\/03\/14\/sulene-releases-introspective-hedonic\/","title":{"rendered":"Sulene Releases Introspective &#8220;he\u2022don\u2022ic&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On March 5th, South African-born, Brooklyn-based artist <a href=\"https:\/\/nysmusic.com\/site\/tag\/sulene\/\">Sulene<\/a> released her new EP, <em>he\u2022don\u2022ic, <\/em>on Trash Casual. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/hedonicEP-768x768.jpg\" alt=\"Sulene\" class=\"wp-image-363258\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The five songs on the EP dive deep into her struggles with alcohol addiction, depression, and hedonic pleasures, and finding a way out of these destructive cycles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sulene\u2019s dark lyricism is juxtaposed by dancey, sexy beats strewn with synth and guitar that she describes as a \u201cgothic disco party.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This vulnerable-meets-underground club aesthetic is found on songs like \u201cidentity crisis\u201d and \u201cphoto booth\u201d, both questioning bad habits she\u2019s encountered in her life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Written at the start of the pandemic, \u201cdiner coffee\u201d brings a more slowed down, sullen moment to the record as Sulene states \u201cI promise to be useful\u201d &#8211; a nod towards needing to create while blocking out depression.<br><br>For Sulene, writing <em>he\u2022don\u2022ic<\/em> was a painful and difficult process, but also one that allowed her to experiment with music in a new way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exploring a darker side of her character and production, Sulene wrote, recorded, and produced the entire EP out of her apartment in Brooklyn, NY. She also delved into filming and editing her own music videos and artwork, giving a full 360-degree view of her newest art. <br><br>Speaking on the release, Sulene stated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>he\u2022don\u2022ic <\/em>explores my relationship with hedonism and addiction. Lyrically it speaks an uncomfortable truth and sonically it makes me wanna be in the club; a contradiction I find intriguing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is definitely a fair overview or the EP. Each song is introspective in its own way, with Sulene analyzing her habits and tendencies, as well as her mental state. Sulene is heavily critical of her relationships with others, and her indulgences and dependencies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: he\u2022don\u2022ic\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/3uVmiCcXJ7sH92ZIeNBDuL?utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, the pounding, synth-heavy beats remind the listener of going out at night and partying with friends at clubs.
