Step back nearly 90 years and visit Hickory House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A New York jazz club located on West 52nd Street, Hickory House was opened in 1933 by John Popkin and was a swinging venue and a great spot to grab cocktails and dinner before a show. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/hickory-house-52nd-st-1948-768x669.jpg\" alt=\"Hickory House\" class=\"wp-image-360996\" width=\"580\" height=\"505\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Located in a stretch of midtown that was crowded with <a href=\"https:\/\/nysmusic.com\/site\/category\/genres\/bluesjazz\/\">jazz <\/a>clubs in the 1940s and 1950s, Hickory House stood out because they also had a branch in Miami Beach, as seen on the menu cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/hickoryhousemenu-768x1122.jpg\" alt=\"Hickory House\" class=\"wp-image-360993\"\/><figcaption>Vintage menu &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/ephemeralnewyork.wordpress.com\/\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With the 18th Amendment repealed in 1933, post-prohibition New York City hit the bars and drank without abandon, and the cheap prices for the time show it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/hickoryhousedrinklist.jpg\" alt=\"Hickory House\" class=\"wp-image-361025\"\/><figcaption>drink menu &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/ephemeralnewyork.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/19\/having-a-drink-at-hickory-house-on-52nd-street\/\">source<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The music from the club is somewhat lost to time, but we know that Marian McPartland, as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/artists\/88746354\/jimmy-mcpartland\">Jimmy McPartland <\/a>Sextet performed at Hickory House, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/artist\/270237-Hot-Lips-Page\">Hot Lips Page<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moderndrummer.com\/2009\/12\/arthur-zutty-singleton\/\"> Zutty Singleton <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluenote.com\/artist\/jutta-hipp\/\">Jutta Hipp<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2014, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2011\/07\/15\/15123976\/marian-mcpartlands-hickory-house-trio-on-piano-jazz\">NPR<\/a> profiled Hickory House Trio, a 1950s group of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/artists\/15123605\/marian-mcpartland\">Marian McPartland<\/a>, Bill Crow and Joe Morello, the latter of whom was part of a reunion session in 1990. Morello fielded offers from both&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/artists\/15404320\/benny-goodman\">Benny Goodman<\/a>&nbsp;and Tommy Dorsey, but ultimately went on to work with a small group taking a new direction in jazz led by&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/artists\/15156676\/dave-brubeck\">Dave Brubeck<\/a>, notably on his <a href=\"https:\/\/nysmusic.com\/site\/2017\/03\/14\/hearing-aide-ned-luberecki-take-five\/\">&#8220;Take Five.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NPR notes that during the 1950s when McPartland and company were playing the Hickory House, jazz musicians including <a href=\"https:\/\/nysmusic.com\/site\/2020\/10\/10\/the-harlem-renaissance-duke-ellington\/\">Duke Ellington<\/a>,&nbsp;Billy Strayhorn,&nbsp;Oscar Pettiford and&nbsp;Thelonious Monk, would stop by the club for a meal and to watch the band. Some would even sit in with the trio, and after coaxing, Ellington might join them on the bandstand (it didn&#8217;t hurt that he shared a publicist with the club.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although all trace of Hickory House is gone, it continued to be in operation at least until 1964. While the two venues share a name, they do not seem to be related, and a connection between the two venues is unable to be discerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One recording from The Hickory Log, made available by <a href=\"https:\/\/jazzlives.wordpress.com\/2020\/11\/05\/we-return-to-our-regularly-scheduled-program-for-a-half-hour-jimmy-mcpartland-dicky-wells-cecil-scott-joe-sullivan-walter-page-george-wettling-marian-mcpartland-jazz-club-usa-broadcast-1\/\">JAZZ LIVES<\/a>, provides a glance at a half-hour broadcast recorded at the lost venue. With host Aime Gauvin, a.k.a. &#8220;Dr. Jazz,&#8221; featuring musicians from the Jimmy McPartland Sextet: McPartland (cornet),  Dicky Wells (trombone), Cecil Scott (clarinet), Joe Sullivan (piano), Walter Page (string bass), George Wettling (drums) and Marian McPartland (piano). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/hickory-house-1937-1.jpg\" alt=\"Hickory House\" class=\"wp-image-360995\"\/><figcaption>Hickory House, 1937<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The band is introduced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Leonard-Feather\">Leonard Feather<\/a>, who chats with both McPartlands, amid serene ambiance that is comparable to Central Plaza or Stuyvesant Casino at the time.
