Scottish synth-pop trio Chvrches returned to New York this weekend with two sold out shows at Manhattan’s Terminal 5. One week before Chvrches’ opening night at Terminal 5, the band announced that multi-instrumentalist Iain Cook tested positive for COVID-19. Instead of postponing any shows, the band was poised to have touring and studio tech Dave Simpson as well as Lo Moon guitarist Sam Stewart step in and fill Iain’s shoes for the shows in Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburg and Columbus. Iain was able to make his comeback to Chvrches for the New York shows, receiving copious “We Miss You Iain!” chants from the crowd throughout the night.

Screen Violence was released back in August but the band recently issued the expanded Screen Violence: Director’s Cut last month featuring three bonus tracks. The tour continues with a handful of east coast dates before heading west, including a show at Las Vegas’ Brooklyn Bowl on December 11th. The tour concludes a week later with a final show at the Hollywood Palladium.

  • Listen to Chvrches’ ‘Screen Violence: Director’s Cut’ Ahead Of Terminal 5 Run

Glasgow based synth-pop vets Chvrches are currently in the midst of a tour which takes them to NYC this weekend for two shows at Terminal 5. The tour is in support of the band’s fourth LP, Screen Violence, released back in August on Glassnote Records. Since the record was released, Chvrches have also released an expanded “director’s cut” version featuring three bonus tracks.

Screen Violence: Director’s Cut Album Art

Screen Violence was recorded almost entirely remote between Los Angeles and Glasgow, Scotland. The term “screen violence” itself was originally an early candidate for the band’s name, but was revived for the title of the new album as it was fitting given the transition of our normal lives into digital screens. The album touches on motifs of loneliness, disillusionment, and fear as a result of being isolated during the global pandemic. Vocalist Lauren Mayberry describes the recording process:

I think for me it was helpful to go into the process with the idea that I could write something escapist almost. That felt freeing initially, to have concepts and stories to weave your own feelings and experiences through but in the end, all the lyrics were definitely still personal.

    Multi-instrumentalist Martin Doherty adds:

To me, the screen aspect was a bit more literal. When we were making the record, it was like half of our lives were lived through screens. What began as a concept was now a lifeline.

Chvrches have released four albums over the last decade, and have crafted a visually stunning live show over the years. Boasting a new stage production on this tour, Chvrches is poised to awe fans at Terminal 5 this weekend. A small number of tickets for night one this Friday, November 26th are still available, while the second night on Saturday is sold out. Stay tuned for our review of the show plus a full photo gallery.

  • IDLES Make Themselves At Home for Two-Night Run at Terminal 5

British punk outfit IDLES made an explosive return to Manhattan’s Terminal 5 this past weekend for two shows in support of their yet to be released fourth LP, Crawler. The band last played the venue two years ago in October as part of an extended touring cycle under their breakthrough record Joy As An Act Of Resistance. On night two of the run, front man Joe Talbot told the audience that playing at Terminal 5 “felt like playing at home” and they could not wait to make their return once the pandemic receded.

Everything about an IDLES show is all about the fans and the appreciation the band has for them. Talbot explained during the show that the energy they feel from the crowd allows them to truly express themselves on stage, and they return that favor in full. Fans are brought onstage to sing and drum, and constant crowd surfing and singing from the barrier railing make the connection physical. A fan was invited onstage to sing along to “I’m Scum” during night two and “Love Song” was performed with a New York medley comprised of snippets of “Empire State of Mind” and Patti Smith’s “Because The Night.”

The setlist from each night contained three new songs, including lead single “The Beachland Ballroom” along with live debut’s of “The Wheel” and “Car Crash.” The new record, Crawler, is out on November 12, 2021 via Partisan Records. You can pre order the new record on the band’s website, and you can also see their full tour itinerary which runs across the US through November with a second UK/European leg from January – March 2022. • In Focus: Goose Sell Out two nights at Terminal 5

Goose made it look almost all too easy to sell out their second night of Terminal 5 on October 9, 2021. The Connecticut-based quartet undeniably took the audience on a full fledged journey that encompassed the multitude of genres that have influenced the band, thus far. Lucky New Yorkers had a chance to experience the powerhouse that transported us somewhere outside New York City this weekend.

Stage lights dim welcoming Rick, Peter, Trevor, Ben, and Jeff on stage, accompanied with a roar from fans begging “GOOSE”, echoing from all three stories inside the terminal. “Tumble” opened the show where Ben Atkind (drums) did us the favor of pulling us into the groovy funk dictating the addictive dancey beat that defines Goose. Rick Mitarotonda (guitar, vocals) spoke indefinitely through the gorgeous Paul Reed Smith Hollowbody II, putting the audience in a trance with his guitar shredding improv through Bob Don.

Peter Anspach makes his first lead vocal debut of the night with a new song from the band, Life On the Shelf. Clearly an unreleased hit, without knowing any words fans were hooked on the chorus, dancing and swaying to the sincere folk tune, highlighted by Rick and Peter’s buttery harmonies. Followed with “Jive Lee” and “Jive II,” Peter’s funky solos and Trevor Weekz thick bass lines brought the crowd furiously jumping and screaming once again. Without any hesitation the audience was pulled into a surprise cover of “Rock the Casbah” from the Clash shaking the floor until the end of set I.

“Wysteria Lane” kicked off the second set with a smile and Peter’s earnest vocals, with some help from the Luigi plush on one of his three dazzling double casio keyboards. Unbelievable Goosian-shredding kept the crowd mesmerized cheering with each cadence as both Rick and Peter swiftly moved up and up the neck leaving the audience asking if they came to a hard rock concert. Rick guided us through Seekers on the Ride I and II with ease reminding fans of their versatility as artists. The loudest cheers of the night broke when Rick’s eccentric solos pushed to the well known hard twangy intro of “Hot Tea.” Ending with “Dragon Fly I & II,” Rick eased our anxieties with a smile “Don’t worry we have one more set.”

“Get The Funk Out of My Face” was not the only cover of set III, but Goose’s folk rock cover of Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” made it sound like Goose could’ve written the song. Just when we thought Trevor Weekz might just be too cool for us, being the backbone of Goose with his 5-string bass and sunglasses, the spotlight shined on him as he read a “Acquainted with the Night” by Robert Frost backed by Ben Atkind (drums) and Rick filling some eerie melodies. The band endurance was unrequited through three full set of nonstop music eventually wrapping with an Encore of “Hot Tea.”

  • Madeon Plays two nights of ‘Good Faith’ at Terminal 5

Hugo Pierre Leclercq, a.k.a. Madeon wrapped up a two-night run at Terminal 5 on Friday, September 24th in support of 2019’s excellent LP Good Faith. The album was released back in November 2019, just a couple of months before COVID would force the music industry into lockdown. Madeon had completed a short first leg of the tour around the time of the release, and a planned second leg was never announced until earlier this spring when live music started to make a comeback.

Good Faith is a lively mix of electropop and deep house elements, presented with very colorful collage-style visuals. Madeon is alone on stage, positioned on a small platform in the center of the stage and backed by a large LED screen. Flanked by two DJ tables on the sides, Madeon is in full-view and the perfectly symmetrical presentation is visually stunning and focuses the crowd’s attention towards center-stage the whole time. Even though the production was not overly large on stage, the lighting had no problem filling the cavernous Terminal 5.

The tour continues on the east coast with a show in New Haven on Tuesday, 9/28 before heading out west for the remainder of the dates through October. See a full list of the tour dates HERE. Next up at Terminal 5 is Tinashé this Thursday, 9/30 followed by a stop on Dr. Dog’s final tour on October 2 – full list of shows at the venue can be found HERE.

Really fascinated to see the kind of energy we’re going to create with our fans this Fall. There’s really nothing like all being in the same room together, and it’s been so long, I have a feeling we’re going to see some really special nights…especially in all of these new places we’ve never played before.

    Peter Anpsach (vocals, guitar, keys)

The band will migrate to uncharted territory in November, beginning with inaugural Atlanta shows at recently constructed venue The Eastern. After making their New Orleans debut at The Republic on November 9, Goose will touch down in Texas for the first time, playing four shows in Houston, Austin, and Dallas. Tour concludes in Denver at Mission Ballroom, the band’s largest venue to date.
