  • The 64th Grammy Awards Announces 2022 Nominees; Lady Gaga, Joe Bonamassa, Alicia Keys and Steve Gadd among Nominated New Yorkers

    The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences announced on November 23rd the 2022 nominees for the 64th Grammy Awards, including a great deal of artists from across New York State. From jazz, to pop, to blues, to rap, to classical artists and engineering, artists from the Empire State racked up nominations nominees this year.

    Some of the biggest recipients of nominations across the Grammy Awards were Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga who topped across six different categories for their work together on their album Love for Sale and single I Get a Kick Out of You. Tony Bennett hails from Long Island City while Lady Gaga is from New York City. The two together are representing New York in the nominations for Record of the year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Album of the Year, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, Best Music Video, and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.

    Some other artists who snagged multiple nominations including Alicia Keys, from Hell’s Kitchen, for Song of the Year for her song “A Beautiful Noise” she made with Brandi Carlile and for Best Immersive Audio Album for her album Alicia. Another artist who snagged multiple nominations is Nas, from Crown Heights, was nominated for Best Rap Album for his album King’s Disease II and for his work on the song Bath Salts by DMX which features Jay-Z & Nas which was nominated for Best Rap Song. The whole song represents some New York skill with DMX from Mount Vernon and Jay-Z from Brooklyn.

    There were many artists from New York who received a nomination for their work across all the categories. Listed below are the nominated categories, artists and their work,  and where in New York each artist is from.

    Another honorable mention goes out to Jon Batiste with his many of his works including his 2021 album We Are. Batiste is actually from Metairie, Louisiana but has had a huge impact on New York. He is known widely for his work with Stay Human on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert which films in Manhattan. Batiste was nominated in eleven categories, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Traditional R&B Performance, Best R&B Album, Best Improvised Jazz Solo, Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Best American Roots Performance, Best American Roots Song, Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, Best Contemporary Classical Composition, and Best Music Video.

  • Dumpstaphunk Grooves Brooklyn Bowl ahead of Madison Square Garden Debut

    Dumpstaphunk last performed in the Empire State at the 2019 New York State Blues festival in downtown Syracuse. Later that evening, band members Tony Hall and Deven Trusclair kept the groove going at the Funk n Waffles club for a sit in on “Standing on Shaky Ground” by the Temptations that Funkadelic’s Eddie Hazel co wrote. A month later they opened for the Rolling Stones to 40,000 people in their hometown at the New Orleans Superdome.

    Dumpstaphunk kicked off 2021 by releasing their first record in seven years, Where Do We Go From Here, which was just nominated in four Grammy categories. The band has been on the road promoting its sound this summer leading them up to a Labor Day Weekend of shows with Dave Matthews Band at Heavens Amphitheatre, The Gorge. All members of Dumpstaphunk sat in with DMB for Sly Stone’s “Thank You (Falletinme be mice elf again) and Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” to close the night.

    Tony Hall sat in with the DMB as part of an alternate format the entire weekend on bass and vocals as well. He was reunited with Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds on stage for the first time since their infamous Some Devil Tour in 2003. Dumpstaphunk will also be joining Dave Matthews Band at the World’s Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden, on November 12 and 13.

    All of this momentum could be felt on stage at Brooklyn Bowl on Saturday, October 23. Rotem Sivan Band opened the show as Dumpstaphunk hit the stage at 9:45 p.m., crushing their entire set for the Williamsburg crowd. Brooklyn Bowl founder, Peter Shapiro, appeared behind the curtain dressed as a pilot while the band took off on stage. Shapiro gave them a quick fist bump of delight after their tune “Itchy Boo.”

    Come on lets get at it Brooklyn! Get up, Get down, Keep it stepping, keep it moving. Every band member was fully engaged with the Brooklyn Bowl crowd the whole set. Tim Reynolds told

    You know those guys when your playing a gig, he’ll look right at you? That’s him. He’ s a bad ass.

    Everyone was dancing to the truth that this band lets out. Lucky nobody slipped onstage due to the greasy lane funk levels. Sly Stone’s words carry on through their take on his cut “In Time.” Well, well, there’s a feelin’, oh, so real in every human On time (About time) There’s a reelin’ when you don’t know what you’re doing, In time…

    If there was a clip that examples their on stave vigor, it would be from their performance of “Justice” (that features Trombone Shorty on the new album). Tony Hall took the electric guitar for a ride down the adjacent lanes to end the jam. New Orleans cats Ivan Neville, Ian Neville and Nick Daniels hit hard on Tower of Power’s “Soul Vaccination,” resonating with the New York crowd. I’m talking bout soul (soul vaccination) Everybody get in line (soul vaccination) Horns!

    During the final song horn players Alex Wasily and Ashlin Parker made their way through the Brooklyn Bowl crowd for “Street Parade” to close the set like the Saints go marching in.

    For the encore, the band paid tribute to legendary drummer and singer Buddy Miles. as his song “United Nation Stomp,” featuring Marcus King was nominated for a Grammy Award for best American roots performance.

    In recording a new album, Tony Hall shed some light with NYS Music about the group’s creative process.

    We recorded a bunch of these songs and didn’t finish them lyric-wise. Vocal-wise we can always change. It goes kind of like vice versa. We’re all a band that can sing and play too, ya know?

  • Lomotif Announces Global Talent Search ‘You’ve Been Scouted’

    Lomotif has announced the creation of ‘You’ve Been Scouted’, a global talent competition. The grand prize winner will receive an exclusive record label contract and producing commitment. ‘You’ve Been Scouted’ will open on July 12, 2021 on the official You’ve Been Scouted channel on the Lomotif app. 

    The competition will last for nine weeks and features Lomotif’s partnership with Grammy® Award winning producer, singer and lyricist Teddy Riley. Teddy Riley is known for his work with iconic artists such as Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Pharrell, and BTS. The grand prize winner of the contest will actually be chosen by Lomotif users using the Lomotif app. 

    Lomotif is the leading video-sharing social networking platform that is democratizing video creation. It has been granted three technology patents uniquely focused on empowering creators to share and watch short videos with ease through remix and collaboration. It’s an up and coming platform being chosen by Snapchat for a bi-directional integration for posting stories between the two platforms as one of only five partners.

    Teddy Riley spoke on the compotinon saying, “I’ve already been on Lomo every day starting the scouting process…. You never know when you could be Scouted. So get ready for life to change.” The ‘competition will try to copy the feeling of singing in a club and having a scout seek you out on a more modern platform. People interested in getting scouted can sign up on the app, giving their best performance. 

    The first three weeks of the competition potential contestants will upload their audition clip on the official ‘You’ve Been Scouted’ Channel on the Lomotif app. The contest allows those who aren’t participating to nominate and elect upcoming artists by tagging them in the comments section of their video with the hashtag #scoutedbylomo. With users, their friends, and fans voting for them in the coming weeks, these participants can garner more votes via the Super Like button available for Lomotif users. By performing a set of in-app actions, the Super Like button shall present with 10 likes (votes) instead of one. 

    This competition could be a great way for up and coming musicians in the New York region to prompt themselves and gain recognition and possibly even an exclusive record label contract and producing commitment.

  • Albany Symphony Wins Second GRAMMY Award

    This past Sunday, the 63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards announced their winners which included the Albany Symphony. The ASO, conducted by David Alan Miller, won the Best Classical Instrumental Solo for Christopher Theofanidis‘ Concerto for Viola and Chamber Orchestra

    The Concerto for Viola and Chamber Orchestra was originally written for Kim Kashkashian. She sent Theofanidis a collection of Navajo poems that were wildly different in character, but had in common a supernatural sense of nature and an extremely evocative vocabulary. Each of the four movements is serious in sentiment, in turns lyrical and dramatic. Theofanidis wrote this work during the tragedy and turmoil of 9/11, starting the piece before and finishing it afterward, and was influenced by being in midtown Manhattan that day.

    This is the second GRAMMY win for the Albany Symphony. The first came in 2013 for John Corigliano’s Conjurer with world-famous percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie

  • 63rd Annual GRAMMY Award Winners include Lady Gaga, Fiona Apple, Albany Symphony Orchestra and more New York Artists

    The 63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards announced winners on March 14, 2021, including many artists who hail from the state of New York, among them Fiona Apple, the Albany Symphony Orchestra, The Strokes, Nas, and many more.

    This year’s GRAMMY Awards were hosted by Trevor Noah for the first time. It also hosted performances from Bad Bunny, Black Pumas, Cardi B, BTS, Brandi Carlile, DaBaby, Doja Cat, Billie Eilish, Mickey Guyton, HAIM, Brittany Howard, Miranda Lambert, Lil Baby, Dua Lipa, Tamika D. Mallory, Chris Martin, John Mayer, Megan Thee Stallion, Maren Morris, Post Malone, Roddy Ricch, Harry Styles, and Taylor Swift.

    Some of the most anticipated categories are in the General Field. The 63rd GRAMMY Awards Record Of The Year was won by Billie Eilish for “Everything I Wanted.” Album Of The Year was won by Tayor Swift for her album FOLKLORE. Song Of The Year was won by Dernst Emile II, H.E.R. & Tiara Thomas for “I Can’t Breathe.” Best New Artist was won by Megan Thee Stallion – watch her perform on Saturday Night Live earlier this season.

    New York had a couple of big wins in this year’s award show. Some of those big wins included Lady Gaga with Ariana Grande winning Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for Rain On Me. Fiona Apple won two Grammys, one for Best Rock Performance for “SHAMEIKA” and for Best Alternative Music Album for her album Fetch The Bolt Cutters. The Strokes won Best Rock Album for The New Abnormal.

    Nas won Best Rap Album for King’s Disease. Concerto for Viola and Chamber Orchestra by Richard O’Neill and David Alan Miller, conductor for the Albany Symphony Orchestra won the Best Classical Instrumental Solo for THEOFANIDIS. Song Of The Year honors went to Dernst Emile II, H.E.R. & Tiara Thomas, songwriters (H.E.R.) for “I Can’t Breathe.”
