  • In Focus: State Champs Headline Frozen Fest 2021 at Empire Live

Saturday, December 18, was the return of Frozen Fest in Albany, New York, at Empire Live. The show was headlined by Albany’s own State Champs, with Origami Angel, Young Culture, and Pollyanna. Pollyanna, and Albany-based Young Culture opened up Frozen Fest 2021 and primed the crowd for Origami Angel. The Washington D.C. duo took the stage and rocked harder than any duo should be able to. By the end of their set, the Frozen Fest audience was feeling loose and ready to party with State Champs.

State Champs walked on stage before a rowdy crowd that had no idea there was a 24-song set in store for them. The long setlist bounced around State Champs’ discography and the audience loved every minute of it. The hometown band opened with ‘Criminal’ and crowd surfers immediately began pouring over the guardrail. The show’s energy slowly increased over the course of the next hour, until fans received good news.

After what felt like an entire show, Derek announced to the crowd that their set was only halfway over. A few hundred sweaty and out-of-breath fans gained a second wind and the night’s energy continued on its upward trajectory. Not too long after this midpoint though, the show hit a tipping point. Fans who were too scared to crowd surf earlier had gained the confidence to try, and one person after another began giving the “up” signal to the nearest strongman they could find.

Eventually though, the good times would have to end. As State Champs played their final songs, the party in the crowd continued with pushing and shoving blurring with hugging and singing. The only thing that could take the night higher was a 5-minute break before a three song encore. State Champs’ set peaked during this encore as the Albany fans sent up as many crowd surfers as was physically possible. Frozen Fest 2021 would go on to end in a shower of hundreds of balloons as the crowd sang along with their hometown band.

They’ll bring their brand of gritty, raw, and in your face rock n roll on a 27-date cross-country tour that kicks off on September 15 in St. Louis and will continue through the fall and winter.

With all of the music for the band’s 2020 release Self Made Man originally written with live performance in mind, Larkin Poe is truly excited to finally let the songs breathe.

We can’t wait to get back on stage with the Monster Energy Outbreak Tour this fall for the first time since our album, Self Made Man, came out! It’s going to feel so good to be back in front of people celebrating live music again!

For their newest release, out September 17th, Larkin Poe partnered with innovative hybrid orchestra Nu Deco Ensemble for Paint the Roses: Live in Concert— a new album that reinterprets Larkin Poe’s music, including their 2020 release Self Made Man and more, through an orchestral lens. Paint the Roses documents a collaborative, livestreamed concert by the two artistic groups in December 2020 at Miami’s North Beach Bandshell. The performance was part of Nu Deco’s 2020-21 virtual and socially-distanced concert season, which featured the ensemble’s genre-bending orchestral music and its powerful first collaboration with Larkin Poe.

In addition to the Monster Energy Outbreak Tour, Larkin Poe has announced several festival dates they are expected to perform at throughout the late summer and fall including BeachLife Festival, San Diego Blues Fest, Telluride Blues & Brews, Treefort, Columbia Roots N Blues, Shaky Knees, Fort Worth River & Blues, Lancaster Roots & Blues and more. • Empire Live and Empire Underground to open on Pearl Street in Albany

Albany will have two new music venues on North Pearl Street very soon. Empire Live an Empire Underground will open this fall as the first downtown premier club in Albany in 30 years.

    empire live

Formed from a partnership between Stan Levinstone of SLP Concerts and Teddy Etoll of Step Up Presents, Empire Live and Empire Underground will be located in the space vacated by Capitol Repertory Theater.

With two floors for show presentations, there will be a 1,000-capacity general admission room on the street level (Empire Live) and a 400-capacity basement space (Empire Underground), which will have its own entrance and identity. Both spaces will have state-of-the-art sound and lights and full artist accommodation amenities and currently ready for bookings.

    empire underground

The physical space will be completed by late spring, with Levinstone and Etoll, partners in Upstate Concert Hall of Clifton Park for the past 13 years, looking at the move into downtown Albany as a boom to its business model.

Downtown Albany is currently seeing a massive redevelopment and rebuilding of its entertainment district. Within the next few years more than 800 new mid- apartments will be added within a 10-minute walk to the club door.

    Stan Levinstone

Empire Live will be located right off the highway at 93 North Pearl Street in Albany, one block from the legendary Palace Theatre and two blocks from the Times Union Center

The new club is a centerpiece of Redburn Development’s $85 million redevelopment of the Kenmore Hotel, which features 275 apartments, 15 commercial spaces, four restaurants and two event venues. Construction will be completed this spring.

Among announced shows so far are Dr. Dog, Attila, August Burns Red, Tech N9ne, Circa Survive, Atreyu, and Gojira. Visit their calendar to see what more Empire Live and Empire Underground have in store.
