  • In Focus: moe. cover Pink Floyd, pay Tribute to Jerry Garcia at Apple Valley

For two nights in early August, moe. played to a faithful crowd, much as they always do this time of year in Central New York. Whether at Saranac Brewery in Utica, Snow Ridge Ski Resort in Turin, or Apple Valley in Lafayette, moe. is a summer staple, and a perfect time to shake off the dust and get down with fellow moe.rons.

Saturday night was highlighted by an always stellar “Recreational Chemistry” to start Set 2, and a trio of “Big World” > “Ricky Marten” > “Mar De Ma” to follow. A cover of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” stole the show, and worked its way into “Opium” and “Plane Crash” to close the night.

Marco Benevento opened Sunday night with a rousing set, accompanied by Karina Rykman on bass and Andy Borger on drums. moe. came out for their first set at 6:30pm for an ideal set to watch the sun set behind the stage. A unique take on “St. Augustine” featured “Tubing the River Styx” and “The Pit” being sandwiched in between sections of “St. Augustine.” A nod to Jerry Garcia, who passed away 26 years ago this day, came in the form of “West L.A. Fadeaway,” which was accompanied by a rainbow in the distance.

Set 2 found moe. getting dark, starting out with “Meat” that moved into “Kyle’s Song” and smoothly into “Bearsong,” which gave birth to “Timmy Tucker.” A jazz bass breakdown from Rob Derhak was met with Chuck Garvey’s furious guitar work, leading to the jam of the night. Al Schnier took charge later in “Timmy”, leading the band unexpectedly into “Moth”, and again jumping back into “Meat” (on a dime) to lead to the end of a triumphant set. “Spine of a Dog” and a jam on “Franklin’s Tower” closed the night at Apple Valley.

June 27th will mark UM’s first appearance at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, New York. The iconic studio and performance space has played a starring role in many legendary nights of music. Home to the famous Midnight Rambles, the Barn has a “if these walls could talk” quality that has inspired musicians for nearly 50 years, all of us included.

To honor the legacy of community and camaraderie that Levon fostered, Umphrey’s McGee will present Rambling On, an evening of mostly true tales live from Helm Studios. Interspersed throughout the show, the band will share recollections from the road, stories of the studio, tales of tunes, and other alliterative shenanigans.

  • In Focus: Twiddle, Aqueous and Dopapod drench fans in jams at Apple Valley

Twiddle headlined 4 nights at Apple Valley in Lafayette, NY over Memorial Day weekend, and welcomed Dopapod and Aqueous for two nights each. It was a rainy run of shows just south of Syracuse, but the weather didn’t damper spirits one bit.

Dopapod and Aqueous each opened two nights, with Dopapod taking the honors on Thursday and Friday, and Rob Compa & Eli Winderman joining Twiddle on night one for “Syncopated Healing.” The next night all members of Dopapod, including Chuck Jones and Neal ‘Fro’ Evans joined for the evening’s closing number, “Latin Tang.”

Apple Valley Park has a great lineup this summer, with Get the Led Out, Allman Betts Band, Billy Strings, Umphrey’s McGee, Tedeschi Trucks Band and many more arriving over in the next couple months. Get your tickets here.

Amid the festivities in Lafayette, Long Island’s Baked Shrimp performed two afternoon shows at the Westcott Theater in Syracuse, welcoming Ryan and Mihali from Twiddle, and Mike from Aqueous, to join them. Baked Shrimp are poised for a breakout year, especially after building up momentum during this last year and heading to the finals of NYS Music’s March Madness. • Blackberry Smoke to Perform at Apple Valley Park in Lafayette this June

Apple Valley Park is located in beautiful LaFayette, NY. More recently it has expanded to host other live entertainment events, including a few successful drive-in concerts in the fall of 2020.

Throughout their career, Blackberry Smoke— vocalist/lead guitarist Charlie Starr, guitarist/vocalist Paul Jackson, bassist/vocalist Richard Turner, drummer Brit Turner, and keyboardist Brandon Still—has embodied Georgia’s rich musical legacy, honoring the people, places and sounds of their home state. As the band celebrates their 20th anniversary this year, their reverence for Georgia has only deepened.

On their latest album, You Hear Georgia, the follow-up to 2018’s critically acclaimed Find a Light, Blackberry Smoke is further celebrating these roots with 10 new songs that feel like Georgia, accented by the addition of Grammy-winning producer and fellow Georgia-native, Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Brandi Carlile).

Over the years, Blackberry Smoke has toured with ZZ Top, Zac Brown Band, and Eric Church, while the group’s last four full-lengths reached the top 10 of the Billboard country charts, with two of these albums (2015’s Holding All The Roses and 2016’s Like An Arrow) landing at No. 1. You Hear Georgia reinforces that the band members have come so far together because they also can rely on one another for support and creative direction, no matter what the circumstances.

Having played music together for so long, it does become a sort of a telepathic thing, where we all are nodding our head at the same time, like, ‘A-ha, I know what this feels like,’ or what it should feel and sound like. That’s what makes it so enjoyable to be in a band: to play with the same dudes decade after decade. Because when you land on something that works to you, you don’t want to stop. You want to keep doing it.
