  • Walk This Way to Ken Taylor’s “Run-DMC Raising Hell 35” Screenprint

Raising Hell, the third album from Run-DMC, remains the turning point at which hip-hop crashed through mainstream barriers and never left. Featuring the crossover smash “Walk This Way,” the 1986 blockbuster still sounds like a revolution unfolding in real time.

Up until Raising Hell, the rap juggernaut we know as Run-DMC was still in its building and breaking-down-doors phase. In 1986 that changed, and in a dramatic way. With their third long-player, the group had reached the mountaintop. It was the record that proved hip-hop wasn’t a fad.

    run-dmc raising hell

Raising Hell marked an important and significant new era for the group working with another innovator, Rick Rubin (and co-produced by Reverend Run’s brother, Russell Simmons), they began to fully transition not only their own sound but the sound of the entire genre. Less live playing and a slicker, tighter sonic attack.

Of course, “Walk This Way,” which hit #4 on Billboard pop charts, saw the group team up with Aerosmith, with a music video that cemented Run-DMC as MTV idols, and both groups riding its wave to new heights.

Beyond “Walk This Way,” the album is full to the hilt with undeniable classic singles such as “You Be Illin,” “It’s Tricky,” “Peter Piper” and “My Adidas,” and no filler.

With hard-rock riffs, turntable scratching, itchy rhythms, hit singles, the trio’s invigorating raps and inseparable chemistry, Raising Hell signaled a new era for rap music, and a point of no-turning-back for the entire genre.

To commemorate the beginning of the Golden Era of hip-hop and the 35th anniversary of Raising Hell, artist Ken Taylor has created a limited edition poster, who cites his love for Run-DMC, saying “I grew up listening to Run-DMC so for me this was both a lot of fun and a great honour!”

Measuring 18″ x 24″ in an edition of 235, this 5 color screenprint is printed on French Cougar White paper and hand numbered, with a holographic sticker for authenticity. Each print costs $85, with framing options available as well.

The poster is available here at 2pm ET on Thursday, May 20.

  • SummerStage Anywhere to Honor Haitian Flag Day, George Floyd, Tulsa Race Massacre

SummerStage Anywhere will hold two virtual programs this spring, honoring Haitian Flag Day, the 100th anniversary of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, and the year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd.

On Thursday May 20th, SummerStage will present Haitian Flag Day featuring Gabel and Nancy St. Leger Dance Company at 8PM ET. SummerStage is partnering with the Rhythm Foundation to live-stream a concert directly from the newly renovated North Beach Bandshell in Miami Beach.

The event will feature Haitian konpa group Gabel, who has been awarded countless awards and accolades within the Haitian Music Industry. They will be joined by Nancy St Leger Dance Company, a Haitian folkloric six-member dance company dedicated to the preservation of authentic Haitian Folklore dance.

On Tuesday, May 25 at 8PM ET, SummerStage will present the national premiere of the short film They Still Want To Kill Us. The aria by composer and activist Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR), performed by mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges and directed by filmmaker Yoram Savion, will mark the 100th anniversary of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.

The presentation is presented in conjunction with a collective of arts organizations from around the country and speaks truth to what transpired in 1921 at the Tulsa Race Massacre, an atrocity all but deleted from history until recently. Occurring over 18 hours from May 31 to June 1, 1921, a white mob attacked residents, homes, businesses, and places of worship in the predominantly Black Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa, Oklahoma. This thriving business district and surrounding residential area, referred to as “Black Wall Street,” was burned to the ground. The tragedy remains one of the worst incidents of racial violence in U.S. history, and, for a period, remained one of the least known. Despite the fact hundreds of people were killed and thousands more left homeless, news reports were largely suppressed.

They Still Want to Kill Us also commemorates the one year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, providing a commentary on progress this last century on the issue of race and America’s treatment of Black life. The aria is a part of a larger pocket opera of the same name currently being developed by DBR and slated to premiere in the 21-22 season.

The program will include the premiere of the piece by Savion, a discussion with DBR and Bridges, moderated by Jamilla Deria and a statement by Damario Solomon-Simmons of the Justice for Greenwood Foundation.

We are honored to continue SummerStage’s legacy as a presenter of through-provoking programming that uplifts BIPOC communities and makes visible art that is reflective of histories untold. At this moment of tremendous trauma and hope for change, work like Roumain’s is critical.

Erika Elliott, SummerStage Anywhere Executive Artistic Director

They Still Want to Kill Us was filmed in May 2021 in New York City’s Sultan Room and Central Park’s historic Seneca Village site. A 19th-century settlement mostly populated by the largest number of African American landowners in New York before the Civil War, the site was torn down to help make way for Central Park. 225 residents (two-thirds Black and one-third Irish) lost 50 homes, three churches, and a school of African American children. Through archival image references and evocative visual narrative, we connect the past and the present, highlighting a pattern of hidden and historically ignored state violence and the forcible displacement of African American landowning communities across the nation.

Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) and J’Nai Bridges

DBR’s acclaimed work as a composer, performer, educator, and activist spans more than two decades, and he has been commissioned by venerable artists and institutions worldwide. “About as omnivorous as a contemporary artist gets” (New York Times), DBR is perhaps the only composer whose collaborations span Philip Glass, Bill T. Jones, Savion Glover, and Lady Gaga. He most recently scored the film Ailey (d. Jamila Wignot), which premiered at Sundance Film Festival in 2021.

What happened to American citizens on May 31, 1921 in Tulsa, Oklahoma was a massacre by white people perpetrated upon Black people. A toxic mix of misinformation, bigotry, ignorance, and white rage ignited a race war that left hundreds dead, a community destroyed, and a nation still struggling for its identity. It seems that some white people still want to kill us (Black people), and the murder of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd and so many others is evidence of this bloodlust sown deep within the American psyche. What are the words and methods of The New Racism? Each day we bear witness to it. Violence against those who are Other in America is deeply rooted in our history, and we have a choice. We can be silent — or we can move mountains and create new spaces for our communities.

    Daniel Bernard Roumain

American mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges, known for her “rich, dark, exciting sound” (Opera News) is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after talents of her generation, gracing the world’s top stages in repertoire ranging from traditional favorites to world premieres to spirituals and standards.

Tune in on May 20 for Haitian Flag Day celebration. They Still Want to Kill Us will stream for free at SummerStageAnywhere.org until July 31.

  • Spafford to make a Fall Tour stop in Buffalo

Arizona jam band Spafford will make their way through New York on their Fall Tour, with a stop on October 28 at Buffalo Iron Works. After COVID-19 derailed live music in 2020, Spafford presents a renewed appreciation for life and live music, with a fall like never before.

    spafford fall tour buffalo

After a deadly pandemic revived our collective gratitude for music and togetherness, Spafford is incredibly grateful for the patience and constant support of their dedicated listeners and couldn’t be more ready to bring new energy to each and every performance.

We’ve been very busy this last year and have taken the time to redefine ourselves, our music, and our message. We are excited to share the future of Spafford with you and can’t wait to see your beautiful faces at a show.

    Spafford guitarist Brian Moss

The group’s 22-show Fall 2021 tour begins on October 1 at Teragram Ballroom in Los Angeles, before moving throughout the Midwest, Southeast and up the East Coast. The tour features three shows around North Carolina, a two-night run in Milwaukee, WI, culminating in Chicago, IL on November 6th at Park West.

Spafford has solidified themselves among the most creative and hard-traveled bands on the contemporary jam scene. Pairing complex compositions with extended improvisations, the rousing energy of the Southwest-based quartet — Brian Moss (guitar, vocals), Jordan Fairless (bass, vocals), Andrew “Red” Johnson (keys, vocals), and Nick Tkachyk (drums, vocals) — is matched by their outstanding talent, versatility of playing styles, and extensive catalogue of original music and innovative covers. Each Spafford show is a sensory expedition of extended jams — an interplay of lights, tones, cascading melodies, and balance that carries a ceaselessly-dancing crowd through the night.

General on sale for all Spafford Fall Tour dates, including Buffalo, starts Friday, May 21st at 10:00 am local time. • Albany Symphony Announces 2021 American Music Festival

After a hiatus last year due to the COVID pandemic, The American Music Festival has announced a comeback with four days of events at Albany’s Palace Theatre.

Presented by the two-time Grammy award-winning Albany Symphony Orchestra and their music director David Alan Miller, the annual festival celebrates cutting-edge composers and musicians. This year, the festival will be held from June 10-13 and consist of a Composer Workshop Masterclass, outdoor neighborhood performances, and family activities.

Other events include a First Draughts reading session, which gives the public a glimpse into the weeklong Composer Workshop, as well as performances from members of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and the orchestra’s own Dogs of Desire.

A recent addition to the events include a collaboration between the Albany Symphony and NYSID (New York State Industries for the Disabled). They will be hosting a panel discussing how disabilities can actually provide more positive abilities than negative. The band Flame, made up of talented musicians with disabilities, will also be performing.

The festival will also feature works from composers Nina Shekhar, Clarice Assad, Molly Joyce, Christopher Theofanidis, Alexis Lamb, Kerwin Young, Bobby Ge, Jack Frerer, Carolyn Yarnell, and Tom Morrison, alongside other musicians. Many of the works will be premiered at the fest.

One of the composers, Nina Shekhar, writes in reaction to how classical music has lacked in responding to current social issues. Her piece, Above the Fray, pokes fun at this phenomenon by distorting Bach’s famous Prelude from Cello Suite No. 1.

“Unlike Western art tradition, which believes that classical music is a one-size-fits-all solution, this piece challenges that and asserts that we each have infinitely unique identities that morph under different circumstances. Art itself is not static, but rather something dynamic that we can allow to breathe, reshape, decompose, and reincarnate into new life forms over time,”

Nina Shekhar, Featured Composer at the American Music Festival

In accordance with New York reopening guidelines, the concerts will have limited in-person attendance for paid subscribers only. Livestream access will be available for free.

Concert livestreams can be accessed on the Albany Symphony Orchestra website. Check out the complete schedule below.

  • Max Creek and The Mallett Brothers Band Arrive in Lake George this Summer

On Saturday, June 12th, Charles R. Wood Festival Commons in Lake George will host an evening of music featuring Max Creek and special guests The Mallett Brothers Band.

Max Creek celebrates its 50th anniversary this summer. In those rare instances that a band reaches its fifth decade, it’s usually a result of stardom. It’s easy enough to keep things together when each member has a jet and techs on retainer and the world tour rolls around every few years. But that’s not how Max Creek has done it.

In 50 years Max Creek has been small, big, regionally-huge, medium, and any other size one can think of; they’ve never graced the cover of Rolling Stone, but you’d be hard pressed to find a music fan in the Northeast that hadn’t heard of them.

The Mallett Brothers Band are an independent rock band from Maine. With a busy tour schedule since forming in 2009, the groups has built a dedicated fanbase across the U.S. and beyond while still calling the state of Maine their home. With a style that ranges from alt-country to Americana, country, jam and roots rock, theirs is a musical melting pot that’s influenced equally by the singer/songwriter tradition as by harder rock, classic country and psychedelic sounds.

    mallett brother band

The Festival Commons at Charles R. Wood Park is located at the southern end of historic Lake George. With panoramic views of “The Queen of American Lakes,” event-goers can also take advantage of all that Lake George has to offer in terms of activities and sight-seeing, all within a very short walk from the grounds.

Tickets for Max Creek and The Mallett Brother Band in Lake George are on sale now and are sold in the pod format with a sectioned off area for each group.

Pod prices range from $175 – $225 based on location and are good for up to five people. Everyone sharing a pod must arrive to the event at the same time. Gates for the show open at 5:30pm, with music starting at 6:30pm.

Preferred Parking is also available for an additional fee. It is located within 300′ of the event gates and includes 30 minutes early admission to the show. All members of a pod must arrive in one vehicle for Preferred Parking.

    The Black Crowes

With their hard rock sound, southern influences, and general nontertiary they plan on performing in over 30 cities.  The Black Crowes have sold out shows around the world; had legendary guitarist Jimmy Page join as a member; got kicked off a tour with ZZ Top for insulting the sponsors; fought amongst themselves and against the rest of the world. In other words, they’ve done everything a legendary rock group should do.

The Robinson Brothers, Chris and Rich, will front their classic 90s band, making three stop in New York State: September 14 at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, September 17 at Jones Beach, and the tour closer at Bethel Woods PAC on September 25.
