  • Pavement to play four nights at Kings Theatre in Brooklyn

Kings Theatre in Brooklyn will welcome indie-rock legends Pavement to Brooklyn for four back-to-back shows from September 30 – October 3, 2022. Pavement began in 1989 and features lead singer/guitarist, Stephen Malkmus, vocalist/guitarist Scott Kannberg, bassist Mark Ibold, drummer Steve West and percussionist/vocalist Bob Nastanovich. They’re best known for songs “Harness Your Hopes,” “Summer Babe” and “Here,” and cite Sonic Youth, Bob Dylan and The Velvet Underground as influences. The group are also highly influential themselves and have been cited as an influence by artists such as Beabadoobee, Elliot Smith, Trey Anastasio of Phish and Death Cab for Cutie.

Widely renowned as one of the most popular and influential bands to come out of the American underground in the last three decades, Pavement disbanded in 1999, and reunited in 2010 with four sold out benefit shows in Central Park. This was in addition to top billing of festivals including Coachella, Reading & Leeds, Primavera Sound and Pitchfork Festival.

Shows are all at 8:00pm with doors at 6:30pm. Tickets for all four nights are on sale now here

As public health conditions and the State’s guidance for performing arts and live entertainment change, Kings Theatre will remain flexible and adapt to applicable health protocols, such as face coverings, health screening, enhanced air filtration and ventilation, and rigorous cleaning and disinfection. All patrons 12 and older are required to show proof they have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine authorized for emergency use by the FDA or WHO. • Graham Nash Talks New Book “A Life in Focus,” Joni Mitchell, CSNY and The Beatles at 92Y

On Sunday, December 5th, music legend, photographer and artist Graham Nash sat down with Alan Light, one of America’s leading music journalists, to reflect on more than fifty years of an extraordinary life as captured in his new book of personal photography: A Life in Focus: The Photography of Graham Nash.

Graham Nash A Life in Focus
Graham Nash and Alan Light at 92Y in New York City

A Life in Focus: The Photography of Graham Nash includes an extensive collection of color and black and white photographs from the personal collection of Nash. Many of his photographs depict intimate moments with family and friends including Joni Mitchell, Stephen Stills, David Crosby and Neil Young. Other pictures in the book include fellow artists like Bob Dylan, Mama Cass, Twiggy and Johnny Cash.

During the interview, which took place at the 92Y cultural center in New York City, Graham discussed how he became interested in photography at a young age as well as how some CSNY songs like “Ohio” were created. Another very interesting story he told was how he met The Beatles in 1959 before they were even called The Beatles. You can hear that story below from his appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. He also took questions from some audience members who were lucky enough to have their question chosen.

Graham will be doing a similar appearance through Bookends in New Jersey on Wednesday, December 8th. You can purchase tickets to that event here. Every ticket comes with an autographed copy of his book which makes it well worth the price of admission. He also announced an upcoming tour starting in the Spring of 2022. You can see all of the dates as well as purchase tickets here.

  • Proctors to host ESYO Holiday Spectacular with special guest Madison Vandenburg

The Empire State Youth Orchestra (ESYO), known regionally and nationally for engaging young musicians from Upstate New York and western Massachusetts in the joyful pursuit of musical excellence, has announced its 2021 Holiday Spectacular, Sleigh Ride, with special guest Madison Vandenburg.

The family-friendly holiday concert is scheduled for Sunday, December 19, at 3pm at Proctors in Schenectady, featuring a sleigh full of talent, including ESYO’s flagship ensemble Symphony Orchestra. They will be conducted by former ESYO Music Director Helen Cha-Pyo, the newly formed ESYO Chamber Orchestra, and the ESYO Youth Jazz Orchestra. Joining ESYO for this one night only performance is 2019 American Idol finalist Madison VanDenburg, who returns home for the holidays to premiere the orchestral version of her new single, “The Light of Christmas.”

The concert program weaves together a seasonal story by Children’s Moonbeam Book award-winning author Vicki Addesso Dodd with sparkling holiday favorites, Christmas carols, and inspired Symphonic classics.. After finding themselves aboard Santa’s sleigh, audiences travel the world seeing the holidays through the eyes of a child and the sounds of music.

Accompanying each scene is music like Leroy Anderson’s iconic Christmas jingle “Sleigh Ride,” Waldteufel’s “Skaters Waltz,” “Troika” by Prokofiev, and a jazzy arrangement of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” Also featured on the program is the famed holiday classic “(There is No Place Like) Home for the Holidays” by Glenville-native Robert Allen. Exhausted from their sleigh ride, the children fall asleep and wake up on Christmas morning to hear the orchestral premiere of Madison VanDenburg’s new hit single.  In the finale, the audience is invited to join VanDenburg for a traditional carol sing-along.

Music is the best accompaniment to the holidays. The pandemic has challenged us all and kept many from seeing their families during the holiday season. We believe that our musicians and our community could use a magical sleigh ride and sparkling music to reignite the light and love of the holidays.

Rebecca Calos, Empire State Youth Orchestra’s Executive Director

Written by multi-platinum songwriters Kenny Lamb (NSYNC, Justin Timberlake, Rhett Akins) and Anthony Little (Tina Turner, Backstreet Boys, and Reba), VanDenburg immediately connected with the song. “It’s not just a Christmas song. It is also about hope and togetherness and seeing the world from a place of love,” said VanDenburg. ”Music has always been a powerful way of helping people through tough times, and after the last year and a half, I think we all need to be reminded of the light that Christmas brings and that there will be good times ahead.”

After performing at the Schenectady Tree Lighting and Holiday Parade, Madison VanDenburg will tour the U.S. with her holiday hit before returning home to unwrap a new orchestral arrangement with her hometown youth orchestra and illuminate Downtown Schenectady. With support from local recording engineer Dan Czernicki at Classical Recording Service, videographer Griffin Bengraff, and LIVE Sound Inc, Sleigh Ride will stream online in ESYO’s Virtual Concert Hall on Christmas Day.

For tickets to Sleigh Ride, An ESYO Holiday Spectacular, call Proctors Box Office at (518) 346-6204 or buy online here for $25 – group rates apply for groups of 10 or more. This concert is made possible through a grant from Schenectady County Legislature’s County Initiative Program.

  • A New Survey Shows That Gen Z Listeners Are Changing the Way People Choose Music Preferences

A new survey released by Dolby Laboratories, Inc. shows that Gen Z listeners are changing the way people are choosing their music preferences from genres, to quality, to era.

    Dolby Laboratories, Inc
Photo provided by Dolby Laboratories, Inc Press Release.

The survey was released on December 1, 2021 by Dolby Laboratories, Inc. which is a leader in immersive entertainment experiences. The survey found there was a shift in particularly Gen Z’s listening behaviors when it comes to music.

The U.S. survey, which consisted of adults 18+ or older, focused on people who regularly listen to music. It  found that many people, in particular members of the Gen Z, have recently discovered iconic songs and artists from past decades for the first time while others are rediscovering songs from their past chasing after a sense of nostalgia. The survey also revealed that social media and Hollywood entertainment, unsurprisingly, are very strong influences over how people discover music. Audio quality has become a priority for many, particularly Gen Z, when choosing a streaming service to use over other features it might have.

This sense of nostalgia really comes through in some of the most interesting data points collected. Six in ten participants feel like they were born in the wrong era because of their taste in music, which was highest among Gen Z (nearly 80%). For most, the era that most closely matches their taste in music was the 2000s. Almost half have recently discovered a song released over a decade ago, which was highest among Gen Z respondents (nearly 70%). Almost half stated they had rediscovered an iconic song or album within the past two years, particularly Gen Z (over two-thirds). Most respondents, close to 70%, are embarrassed to share their music playlists with others, particularly their boss.

Social media and Hollywood entertainment also heavily influence the discovery of new music according to the survey. 57% said social media is the top way they discover music. While YouTube is the most popular platform for discovering music, according to 79% surveyed, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok significantly influence how people find new songs. Almost a fourth of people who recently discovered a song released over a decade ago attribute this discovery to a viral video on social media. Six in ten people have also discovered a new artist or song after watching a TV show or movie.

The survey also showed that people in the U.S. are spending more time and money on music. Over two-thirds spend more time listening to music each day than before the start of 2020, with over half listening to music four hours per day or more. 55% indicated that they spend more money on music purchases each month, such as streaming subscriptions, than at the start of 2020.

One of the last things the survey found was that many are prioritizing audio quality when enjoying music. Among those who pay for a music streaming plan, nearly 90% agreed that enhanced audio quality is a “must-have” feature of their subscription, of which more than half strongly agreed. Of this group, 82% have upgraded, changed subscriptions, or explicitly paid for a service because it offered better audio quality. Nearly two-thirds who pay for a music streaming subscription indicated that better sound quality was more important than other features such as ad-free listening, exclusive content, or the ability to add multiple users to their account. Over 70% surveyed are likely or very likely to purchase a new audio device within the next six months specifically to enhance their experience when listening to music. Nearly half of Gen Z surveyed who pay for a music streaming subscription want access to the latest cutting-edge audio technologies with their plan. 86% of Gen Z surveyed are likely to purchase a new audio device in the next six months to get better audio quality when enjoying music.

Other things worth noting that the survey discovered is that comparing various types of in-car entertainment, most see the biggest opportunity for enhancing the listening experience when enjoying music in the car (43%), followed by audiobooks and podcasts (23%). It also found that more than two-thirds stated they were very interested or somewhat interested in a new technology that lets them experience music more deeply when driving.

John Couling, Senior Vice President of Entertainment at Dolby Laboratories spoke on the survey saying, “Music fills our lives with moments of joy and has been a way to escape the challenges we have faced over the past two years. This has driven changes in consumer behavior, such as the revival of music from past decades to the prioritization of better-quality experiences that allow listeners to connect more deeply with their favorite artists and songs. As we look to the future, we expect these influences to have a lasting impact over how we enjoy music.”

  • Keith Urban “The Speed of Now” North American Tour Begins June 2022, Stops at CMAC and UBS Arena

Four-time Grammy Award winner Keith Urban has set Summer 2022 for the North American debut of his first world tour in four years, dubbed “The Speed of Now World Tour.” The shows will features three-time Grammy Award nominee Ingrid Andress, and are in addition to the 50 shows previously announced in Australia, Germany, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

    keith urban

Among the shows include an early tour stop in Canandaigua at CMAC, and a late October show at UBS Arena in Belmont Park.

Every night is the first time we’ve played these songs for that audience, in that moment.  It’s why every show is different – spontaneous and unpredictable – even for us! After two years we’re finally gonna get the chance to play some of the new songs we haven’t done live before.  We’ll throw in a bunch of the songs that everyone comes to hear, a couple of which we’ll rework a bit, and it’s really gonna be tough to get us off the stage.

    Keith Urban

Critics from around the globe have hailed Urban’s concerts as ones “not to be missed,” as unpredictable as they are explosive.  Combine his infectious showmanship, virtuoso guitar playing, effortless spontaneity with a fist-pumping, arena-ready arsenal of hits and “The Speed of Now World Tour”promises to be one of the concert events of Summer 2022.

I’ve always considered myself a live performer first, it’s what I’ve always done and it’s what my music needs to live and breathe.  Our shows are all about living in the moment.  They’re a totally interactive and immersive experience where everyone can participate in whatever way they want – sing, dance, do whatever.

    Keith Urban

What lies at the heart of every great show are the songs. “Blue Ain’t Your Color,” “The Fighter,” “Somewhere In My Car,” “Wasted Time,” “Somebody Like You,” “Long Hot Summer,” his latest single “Wild Hearts” and his global smash “One Too Many” with Pink, many of which will be featured in a night of music from one of the touring world’s best.

Tickets for all shows go on sale on December 10th at 10:00AM PT. For information on where to get tickets visit Keith Urban’s website.

Thank you for your continued positive vibes, thoughts and prayers.  They help Chuck get stronger each day.

  • Jug Life! Bearsville Theater Salutes the Sebastians – Lovin’ Spoonful John and Photog Wife Catherine

The Bearsville Theater put the spotlight on one of Woodstock’s most famous couples, legendary musician John Sebastian and his photographer wife Catherine, at a joint all-star concert/art opening on Friday, December 3.

The concert and the photo exhibit provided a look back at the many famous musicians, like Fred Neil, Tim Hardin and Sebastian himself, who cut their teeth in the folk and jug band scene of Greenwich Village in the ‘60s before migrating to Woodstock.

Fritz Richmond, Paul Rishell, James Wormworth, Annie Raines, John Sebastian & Jimmy Vivino. Group shot during rehearsal for an appearance at the “Late Nite with Conan O’Brian” show

The evening kicked-off with an introduction to the two dozen photos in the exhibit “Catherine Sebastian at Bearsville: The Jug Band Years.”  A star in her own right, Catherine’s work has graced album, book and magazine covers featuring Pete  Seeger, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Mick Jagger, Kathy Valentine (of The Go-Go’s), Lady Gaga, Debbie Harry, Dr.  John, Paul Butterfield, Edina Menzel, Levon Helm and the RCO All-Stars and many more.

The photos date from the ‘60s through today, with many featuring John and his musical cohorts from the J-Band, a jug band formed in the ‘90s which has included Fritz Richmond, Yank Rachell, Jimmy Vivino, Paul Rishell, Annie Raines and other notables.  The collection boast many classic shots of Sebastian with Tim Hardin, Happy Traum, Fred Neil, Paul Butterfield and even his father John, who was an internationally renowned harmonica virtuoso in the classical idiom. Also featured are shots of Sebastian’s J-Band in performance, at the Bearsville Theater in 1994, on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and more. Not to be missed is a shot of John inside his famous tie-dyed tent in Laurel Canyon. This is where he learned to craft the colorful fashions for the jeans and jeans jacket he wore at Woodstock ‘69.  Framed and unframed prints are available for purchase at the Bearsville Theater and their website

Immediately before the concert commenced, John, Catherine and the musicians headed outside where Bearsville impresario Lizzie Van dedicated the recently rebuilt back porch, “The John Sebastian & Fred Neil Deck.”

“When Lizzie said she wanted to name a part of the space after Fred and me, I was kind of puzzled as to where it would be,” laughed Sebastian. “When she said it was going to be the porch, I said ‘ that’s perfect.’  Because if me and Fred were going be anywhere it would be out on the porch… smoking something we probably shouldn’t be smoking!”

The concert that followed had the intimate and casual feeling of a living room session, with Sebastian greeting the hometown audience with a boisterous “Good evening, my town.” He began solo with a few  selections from Fred Neil, with whom he recorded and toured for two years before forming the Lovin’ Spoonful. The highlight here was his ambling version of “Other Side of This Life” from Neil’s classic 1965 debut album, “Bleecker and McDougal.”

Sebastian then turned his tales and musical talents to another friend, Tim Hardin.  Sebastian lovingly joked: “Timmy was really not the cuddly guy who wrote Misty Roses. But the coolest guy of all of us, someone best known by listening to his early nasty tunes!” Sebastian followed with a solo performance of one of these, the knotty blues You Got A Reputation.  He then brought on longtime J-Band member, Paul Rishell, for a solo on one of Hardin’s most covered compositions, “Reason to Believe.”

Sebastian’s cohorts in the J-Band and another aggregation, The Black Italians, then came to the stage. Guitarist Jimmy Vivino and the always smiling drummer/washboard whiz James Wormworth, joined by Lovin’ Spoonful bass man Steve Boone, partook a spirited run through the Lovin’ Spoonful’s Lovin You.  Next up came another Woodstock legend, Cindy Cashdollar, who added her slithering, bluesy dobro runs to another nugget from early in John’s career, The Even Dozen Jug Band’s All Worn Out

The energy was upped when another harmonica virtuoso, Annie Raines, joined for Sebastian’s Jug Band Music and You’ve Been A Good Old Wagon But You’ve Done Broke Down.  The latter is a blues composed in 1895 and popularized in the 1920s by Bessie Smith, to which Raines added wailing harp and throaty vocals.

After a trip through the traditional Fair Thee Well and Jimmie Rodgers’ Miss the Mississippi and You, blues great Joe Louis Walker came onstage for a high-energy romp through Viola Lee Blues, with Sebastian on harp.  John’s playing proved his mastery of the blues’ most portable instrument, and why he has been called upon to play it on classic tunes by the likes of Crosby Stills and Nash, The Doors and many others.  His still stellar chops were further evidenced on the following, a two-harp duet with the equally fierce Raines.

Sebastian saluted important friends and mentors, the blues greats Sleepy John Estes and Yank Rachell, with soulful covers of their Milk Cow Blues (Leaving Trunk) and Tap That Thing respectively, with the latter featuring contributions on the jug and stage banter from John’s son Ben.  Sebastian also performed the wonderful jazzy ballad to a love lost, My Passing Fantasy, from his 2014 duet disc with David Grisman.  He then donned a harmonica holder and banjo to round out the set taking the all-star band through a rollicking rendition of K.C. Moan, a 1929 classic from the Memphis Jug Band.

After a well-deserved standing ovation, Sebastian and crew returned to perform two of his best loved Lovin’ Spoonful hits, Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind and You Didn’t Have to Be So Nice.  With Cashdollar’s swirling dobro, Vivino’s smooth guitar licks and Wormworth’s percolating washboard and ever-present smile, these tunes sent John’s audience off into the wintery Woodstock night winter with very warm feelings indeed.

  • New Release From Andrew Thomases Pulls His Fans To Look Within Themselves

Andrew Thomases extracts music from his down to earth personality, whether it is his vulnerability or call to action, Thomases has a job for us all to do. “Will You Miss Me When I’m Gone” addresses the topic of climate change from the perspective of the environment filled with eccentric bass rhythms, funky guitar, and booming percussion.

    Andrew Thomases

Thomases is always looking to challenge the listener’s mind by stirring curiosity in their hearts. Through his retro rock rhythms, complimented by captivating melodies inspired by the the greats of the ‘80s and ‘90s, it’s almost easy to bypass his lyrics. Defining his genre as “conscious rock” Thomases is dedicated to singing about current events, life experiences, or loss taking his fans on an emotional journey with each listen. His personality always shines through making each emotional journey lighthearted, cracking jokes through his serious messages.

“Will You Miss Me When I’m Gone” is a warning and a call to action, as we must act quickly to preserve what we have for future generations. Otherwise, they may not even know what they are missing.

    Andrew Thomases

The New York native grew up just north of New York City as a son of a musician himself. Andrew’s father pursued his passion for bass guitar pushing him to pick up his own at the age of 12. As a typical band-type highschooler, he spent his years organizing and playing in cover bands around his hometown. His tendency to lean on unusual chord progressions threatened the status quo and earned him the role as a DJ for his school’s radio station, and he continued to explore music through college. His recent move to San Francisco has given Andrew more experiences to write upon, bringing more material to captivate his fans.

The powerful call to action will inspire you to pay your respects to mother earth while keeping you grooving on the dance floor.
