  • So MaNY Roads: The Grateful Dead in New York State

    Few bands have a relationship with the state of New York like the Grateful Dead. Outside of California, the Grateful Dead have performed more shows in New York than any other state.

    With 309 unique shows performed across the Empire State in a 28 year span, beginning at Tompkins Square Park on June 1, 1967, the Grateful Dead made New York a home away from home, with venues of all sizes welcoming them during their career.

    Over the past few years, NYS Music has looked back on some of these shows, whether they be archival releases, or an iconic show worthy of a closer look. In 2020, we began to look intently at the history of the Grateful Dead in the Empire State, and in doing so, discovered some overlooked diamonds in the rough.

    While performances at Madison Square Garden, The Knickerbocker Arena and Barton Hall garner the glory, there are shows that are equally compelling which we took a second look at. Whether the performance was in The Bronx, Alfred State, Oswego, Glens Falls, Lake Placid or Watkins Glen, each show gets a thorough analysis, with first-hand accounts and memorabilia, as well as audio and/or video of each performance.

    We’ve taken all these articles that examine the long history of the Grateful Dead in New York State, as well as Jerry Garcia’s solo and JGB performances, and created an interactive Google Map that allows you to observe the history of the Grateful Dead in New York – So MaNY Roads. You can find info on each of these shows (were you there?), and dive into shows you may or may not have known about.

    With more than 300 shows to include in this series, we so far have looked at more than 50 of these shows, all searchable in the map below. More will be added each month as we continue looking at the Grateful Dead and their history in NY.

  • Surf’s Up on latest from Rochester Guitarist Greg Townson, “Off and Running!”

    Rochester twang bar king, Greg Townson, is back with another super fine collection of surf guitar instrumentals perfect for the hazy days of our post-COVID lockdown summer.  Called Off and Running! (High Tide Recordings), it features a cast of stellar supporting musicians, including his bandmates from the world renowned Los Straitjackets and NRBQ. Expert players all, they jell together wonderfully to breathe new life into classics like “The Locomotion” and “Just One Look” and Townson’s authentically retro originals.

    Greg has been making music most of his life, winning fans and making friends wherever he performs, from stages all across the United States to Europe, Scandinavia and beyond.  In 1998, Townson formed The Hi-Risers, a trio that put the spotlight on his singing, guitar playing, production and songwriting talents. Since then, he has continued to record and tour prolifically with that band, issuing nine records to date. The band’s most recent release is the 45, Smooth Operator b/w Hot Banana, which came out last year on Hi-Tide Recordings.

    2010 brought yet another dimension to Greg’s work when he was asked to join Los Straitjackets, the Mexican wrestling mask-wearing instrumental guitar greats. In 2012 he contributed songs to Jet Set, one of the strongest records in the band’s extensive catalog. He has since contributed his guitar and songwriting talents to five more of their releases. In 2015, Los Straitjackets and Townson teamed with legendary songwriter Nick Lowe. This dynamic union released several EP’s, toured the world and appeared on shows such as CBS This Morning and Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

    As a continuation of his instrumental guitar work featured in Los Straitjackets,  Greg teamed up with Hi-Tide Recordings for the Travelin’ Guitar series of his own guitar-based recording. 2017’s Travelin’ Guitar and its 2019 follow-up, More! Travelin’ Guitar, are now complemented by his latest, Off and Running!

    The title track serves as a high-energy kick-off to the album. It boasts some cool stop-time drums, snapping leads and a very delicious ascending chordal bridge – a whole boatload of serious music, moods and fun clocking in at just shy of two minutes.  Townson’s cover of the Jackie DeShannon-penned hit for The Searchers, “When You into The Room,” launches with a play on Ringo’s great intro drum beat from The Beatles’ “Ticket to Ride,” while his cover of the Little Eva then Grand Funk hit, “The Locomotion” is pure retro SoCal surf of the early 60s, something that could’ve come from the catalog of mighty The Ventures or The Trashmen.

    Townson’s reimagining of Barbara Lewis’ 1963 R&B smash, “Hello Stranger” is one of my favorites and the most ambitious arrangements on the disc. It has an almost Space Age Bachelor pad vibe, with swirling organ and soft reeds (flutes and oboe?) that sound like a Brian Wilson Pet Sounds outtake.  Spanish modes a la Los Straitjackets drive “Aztec,” while guesting background vocalists and a growly sax add pure fun to the straight-ahead surf of “Goin’ Wild” and “Go Go Power.”

    On all these tracks, Townson is a master of taste, restraint and tone, the latter which must emanate from a garage-full of vintage gear and whole bunch of vintage vinyl digestion.  The covers give you another reason to love these wonderful songs, and add Townson’s takes on them to your playlist.  And his originals are all faithful to the era that he obviously loves – a gentler, kinder time when you could take on the world armed only with the sweet twang and reverbed roar of a Fender Strat and Twin Reverb.

  • ‘Bands on the Bricks’ Concert Series Returns to Rochester

    Live music has taken over Rochester‘s Public Market once again. The annual “Bands on the Bricks” concert series has made a comeback with a lineup of popular tribute bands and local groups, beginning July 16.

    The Rochester Public Market, located on 280 North Union Street, has hosted community events since 1905. “Bands on the Bricks” is one of their most popular summer events, bringing crowds from all over the area. All shows are 6-10 p.m. every Friday night until August 13.

    On Friday, July 16 the Zac Brown Tribute Band rocked the market, delivering the “true Zac Brown Band experience” for Rochester locals. Check out a live stream recording of their set from the ZBTB Facebook.

    There are five free city-owned Market parking lots available for use. Railroad Street, Union Street, a large lot across Union Street from Market grounds (accessible from Trinidad or Scio Streets), and two small lots at the corners of Pennsylvania/First, as well as Pennsylvania/Union. Public street parking and paid private lot parking are also available in the surrounding Market District. 

    A market trolley circulates around the grounds and to/from parking lots from May through October, and a pedestrian and bicycle bridge over Union Street is available to and from the Trinidad/Scio Street lot. Carpooling, walking, or bicycling is encouraged, but bikes are not permitted beyond the market gates.     Gates open 5:30 p.m., shows start at 6 p.m., all shows are free of charge. Attendees are permitted one sealed bottle of water per person, no other food or beverages is allowed. Seating is limited so personal folding chairs and blankets are suggested. More information can be found on the City of Rochester website.

  • Elektric Voodoo to stop in Rochester on Telescope Tour

    Elektric Voodoo, the Afrobeat-inspired psych dance-rock ensemble, just released the music video for their title track “Telescope” and tour dates for their album. Scott Tournet, frontman for Elektric Voodoo, is also a founding member of Grace Potter & The Nocturnals (2003-2014), Blues & Lasers, a solo artist, and producer.  They will be making a stop on August 21st at Water Street Music Hall in Rochester.

    The music video filmed by Michael Cacciabaudo perfectly captures the intimate recording session and vibe. “Telescope” is the second single from Elektric Voodoo’s upcoming album of the same name, due out August 20th. The band has also announced their first tour dates in support of the album kicking off August 7th. Full tour dates below.

    Elektric Voodoo is comprised of an all-star ensemble with songwriter, guitarist, and bandleader Scott Tournet, Matt Bozzone (drums/percussion, vocals), Ty Kiernan (congas, timbales, percussion), Travis Klein (tenor sax, keyboards, guitar, percussion, vocals), Brad Nash (baritone sax, keyboards, percussion, vocals), and Luke Henning (bass, vocals, percussion). They first came together in 2016 around the time Tournet left the band he had built up for 12 years with Grace Potter and Nocturnals. Together they took a leap of faith to create something new.

  • Live at MLK! in Rochester Returns With Trombone Shorty and Gov’t Mule

    Live at MLK! is closing up their summer concert season in Rochester with big-name performances by Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue and Gov’t Mule.

    The show will be held on September 4 at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park at Manhattan Square. Along with the killer performances, there will be a craft beer garden complete with IPAs, ciders, and seltzers, a “bubbly bar” with prosecco and mimosas, and a VIP Ultra Lounge.     Trombone Shorty (born Troy Andrews) is an American musician, producer, actor and philanthropist from New Orleans, Louisiana. He is best known as a trombone and trumpet player but also plays drums, organ, and tuba. He has worked with some of the biggest names in rock, pop, jazz,  funk, and hip hop. Andrews began playing trombone at age four, and since 2009 has toured with his own band, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue.

    Gov’t Mule is an American Southern rock jam band, formed in 1994 as a side project of The Allman Brothers Band by guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody. The band released their debut album, Gov’t Mule, in 1995, and have since released an additional nine studio albums, plus numerous EPs and live releases. Gov’t Mule has become a staple act at music festivals across North America, with both its members and frequent guests boasting members from other notable bands, adding various funk and blues rock elements to the band’s sound.

  • Revisiting Past Discoveries at Rochester International Jazz Festival

    In normal times, music fans in Rochester would be finishing off another Jazz Festival, a nine-day smorgasbord of musical delights. However, for the second straight year, the city is bereft their biggest live music week and all the discoveries that come with it.

    Despite the shutdowns, artists still managed to put out some incredible music last year, the Rochester International Jazz Festival alumni among them. So while we sit and wait until the festival returns in 2022, let’s take a look at what ten of our favorite RIJF discoveries released in 2020.

    Mammal Hands (2016)

    The Made in UK Series brought this trio across the pond in 2016 and we’ve been digging them ever since. With Captured Spirits, saxophonist Jordan Smart, pianist Nick Smart and drummer and percussionist Jesse Barrett build on the sound they’ve been evolving with each release, adding in more electronic influence.

    Kat Edmonson (2013, 2015)

    Kat Edmonson enchanted us at the festival both in 2013 and 2015 and she ratchets up the magic in her latest release, Dreamers Do, which reimagines music from the Disney canon to incredible effect. You’ll never want to hear the originals again. Watch out for a guest spot from fest-alum Bill Frisell.

    Gogo Penguin (2015, 2018)

    Another trio brought in by the Made In U.K. series, Gogo Penguin made their stateside debut at the festival in 2015 and then returned to wow us again in 2018. The mostly acoustic piano trio has always injected some electronic influence, increasing it with each release. It comes even more to the fore on last year’s self-titled release, though the wordless melodies are still as catchy as ever.

    Girls in Airports (2019)

    In the last festival staged, back in 2019, no band wowed us quite like Girls in Airports. The Danish quintet moved through “ethereal soundscapes, intense evil marches and organ-rich spacey grooves, mixing in infectious rhythms and melodies,” and it’s more of the same on 2020’s Dive, a must-listen.

    Ibrahim Electric (2010, 2014)

    Sometimes the much-beloved International aspect of the festival brings otherworldly sounds. Other times it shows off the inescapable influence of American music. Another fest-alum out of Denmark, Ibrahim Electric exemplifies the latter, exploring the organ-trio oeuvre (and well beyond) with aplomb on the aptly-named Time Machine.

    DakhaBrakha (2017)

    Ukrainian quartet DakhaBrakha had the Big Tent venue in awe during their 2017 appearance. A blend of traditional ethnic folk music with varied and at times avant-garde influences, the music complemented their colorful quasi-traditional garb. It was an expansion of most of the audience’s musical universe for sure. Alambari touches on almost everything that made their performance so thrilling, minus the visuals of course.

    Polyrhythmics (2016)

    Every Rochester International Jazz Festival boasts at least a handful of badass funk outfits that invigorate the generally staid crowd into a dancing frenzy. Seattle’s Polyrhythmics were just one band and with their latest, Man from the Future, they have us hoping for a return visit soon. This thing cooks!

    Matt Wilson (2002, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2018)

    One of the most frequent visitors to the festival, NYC-based drummer Matt Wilson always brings something a little different. When we last caught him in 2018 it was pure joy mixed in with some serious statements on politics and humanity. Likewise on last year’s Hug, you might not find a happier jazz track than the title cut, while “Space Force March/Interplanetary Music” takes an overt but fun political turn.

    Samuel Hallkvist (2010)

    A decade ago the young Swedish guitarist, Samuel Hallkvist, really caught our attention. And with last year’s Epik, Didaktik, Pastoral he proved he’s only improved with age. It’s impressive and compelling set of adventurous avant-garde jams.

    Nubya Garcia (2019)

    We’ll close this out highlighting another artist from England. More than any of the previous in the list, saxophonist Nubya Garcia has shapeshifted the most. When we saw her in 2019 she blew us away with her fiery playing and mind-expanding jazz compositions. With SOURCE she has broken free from the jazz shell to produce something uniquely brilliant that has been met with widespread critical acclaim and commercial success. If you haven’t already, definitely give this one a listen.

  • ‘Music To Your Ears’ virtual event to be held to benefit Rochester Hearing & Speech Center

    Dozens of musicians from Western New York are coming together on he evening of Thursday June 24 to support “Music To Your Ears,” a live online fundraising event for Rochester Hearing & Speech Center.

    For a minimum donation of $10, viewers can access an eclectic range of acts. Featured performances include sets from the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, a duo from The Honey Smuglers, Teagan Ward, Roses & Revolutions, and Periodic Table of Elephants. See the full lineup below.

    Rochester Hearing & Speech Center provides comprehensive audiology services, which include comprehensive and diagnostic hearing evaluations, hearing aid fittings, auditory processing disorder evaluations, and newborn hearing screenings.

    The clinic also offers early intervention and pre-school, as well as private therapy and tutoring.   • No Snark in These Puppies: Bob Lanzetti and Zach Brock in Rochester

    Two members of Snarky Puppy, violinist Zach Brock and guitarist Bob Lanzetti, closed out a quick run of shows as a duo Sunday night, June 13, in Rochester at Lovin’ Cup.

    Lovin’ Cup always boasts immaculate sound, and when the seats and tables are out, it provides a nice intimate setting. Both were welcome for the rich and beautiful music Brock and Lanzetti were laying down this night. Being a free show, a disengaged crowd might be expected. However, everyone in the room was completely rapt, respectful and there for no other reason than to squeeze out just a bit more of that sweet live music that has been so absent from the world for way too long.

    Unlike their regular gig with Snarky Puppy, this music was less booty shaking and more ear tickling, less dance party more dinner party. Each a master of his instrument, together they could interweave enough complex notes to create swells of sound and also bring it down to simple taps and plucks. Brock would put away the bow to create rhythmic “bass” lines for Lanzetti to play a whirlwind solo over, and Lanzetti would likewise settle into a groove for Brock to take the violin to eclectic heights.

    Their dynamic range wasn’t left to just how they played, but also what. The evenings program covered chamber music, jazz, world, Americana, blues and even some choice tributes. Many artists cover the great Gillian Welch, but few do so as an instrumental. They took her “Elvis Presley Blues” for a ride early in the first set, which proved to be a highlight. Brock’s violin conjured up all the emotion of Welch’s voice in such a way that the lyrics still pushed through. Later, on a tune dedicated to Steve Lacy, Brock summoned different tones from his instrument, resurrecting Lacy’s early adoption of the soprano sax as an improvisation vehicle.

    Both musicians were open and friendly from the stage, telling stories and imparting musical knowledge that furthered the attentive audience’s enjoyment and created a connection between the two.

    We’ve been missing Sunday shows for over 15 months. Those are the ones they say to never miss, right? There’s just no better way to finish or start a week. Zach Brock and Bob Lanzetti fit the bill, snark or not.

  • Rochester Events Bring Back Live at MLK! Concert Series

    Rochester Events welcomes back live and in-person concerts with Get The Led Out, beginning June 25 at Martin Luther King Jr. Park in downtown Rochester. The series is aptly named “Live at MLK!”

    Organizers of the Rochester Lilac Festival and Party in the Park will kick off “Live at MLK!” beginning June 25. The 2019 edition featured George Thorogood and St. Paul and the Broken Bones, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Get The Led Out, the premier Led Zeppelin tribute band, will open the season on Friday, June 25 at 8pm, doors open at 6:45 pm. 

    Returning to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park at Manhattan Square will be a craft beer garden featuring rotating showcases of IPAs, ciders, stouts, and more. A Bubbly Bar with prosecco and mimosas and the VIP Ultra Lounge and Chill Lounge will feature access to a private lounge areas, full bar, private A/C restrooms, front stage access, and a commemorative lanyard. 

    Patrons may bring blankets and one sealed bottle of water into the park. Lawn chairs, bicycles, skateboards, in-line skates and pets will not be allowed in. Shows are rain or shine/no refunds. 

    In order to run the event safely and to cooperate with NYS Covid rules and regulations, ALL patrons must show proof of the Covid-19 vaccination either with their vaccine card or through the Excelsior Pass.

    Parking is available at nearby parking garages including the Washington Square Garage, 111 Woodbury Blvd.; the Court Street Garage, 194 Court St. and at the East End Garage, 475 E. Main St. Parking will also be available at The Strong Museum, 1 Manhattan Square. 

    Tickets go on sale Monday June 7 at 10am must be purchased online in advance on the Rochester Events website. Pricing is $18 in advance, $25 day-of, plus service fees. Tickets to the VIP Ultra Lounge and Chill Lounge must be purchased in advance and will be available on a limited basis for each show.

  • Mac Sabbath Brings 2021 Pop-Up-Drive-Thru Tour to Ravenous Fans with Two Stops in New York

    Mac Sabbath is returning to the road in late August to bring America another heaping helping of unhealthy – but irresistible – Drive Thru Metal. Their 2021 Pop-Up-Drive-Thru Tour will feature The Outlaw Mariachi, Speedealer and Lung on select dates, and will make stops in Rochester and New York City.

    Mixing raucous comedy with borderline-horrific theatrics, Mac Sabbath is the love child of heavy metal band Black Sabbath and hamburgers. Warning about the dangers of fast food, Mac Sabbath puts on a theatrical, multimedia stage show – complete with parody lyrics, a smoking grill, laser-eyed clowns, bouncing burgers and many more surprises.

    Mac Sabbath has also recently revealed their first book, Drive Thru Metal, a pop-up book that takes fans on a journey through a dystopian fast-food world polluted by its own waste. There are two editions of the book, one being the Special Edition version, a limited version complete with a foil stamped cover, a Gris Grimly art print and “ketchup and mustard splattered” yellow and red vinyl.

    Mac Sabbath

    Both editions of Drive Thru Metal include pop-up scenes highlighting “The Factory,” “The Ascension” and “Utopia” and include a vinyl with seven Mac Sabbath musical stories, including songs “Organic Funeral,” Sweet Beef” and “N.I.B.B.L.E.” Both editions are available in limited quantities and pre-orders are available on Mac Sabbath’s merch site.
