Spoon Stirs it up at The Capitol Theatre
Spoon orchestrated a six show, eight-day “min tour” to prepare for their “Back to Life” live stream from Los Angles at the end of October. The tour, isolated to the Northeast, included a stop at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY.

Spoon’s set began with the somewhat dark “The Beast and Dragon, Adored.” The song afforded the band the opportunity to pull the audience in close before engaging them in a full on rock offensive. Lead singer and founding member Britt Daniel took his position guiding the charge. But at times during the set, Daniel could be seen dropping to his knees or catapulting into full flight as if the songs were giving the commands.

Stage right Alex Fischel was no shy puppy. Oscillating between guitar and keyboards (and occasional percussion), Fischel would at times be hidden away in the crux of his set up and then erupting into full on guitar assaults with a maladroit style all his own. Jim Eno, the other founding member of Spoon, set the pulse for the band with his drumming, enabling the band to take music in the direction it wanted to go in.

Since starting in 1993, Spoon has amassed a trove of songs in their gig bag. The set was comprised of fifteen songs including: “Don’t You Evah,” “Do You,” and “I Turn My Camera On.” The encore found Daniel and Fischel alone on stage isolated in spotlights as they harmonized on John Lennon’s “Isolation.” The band joined mid way and performed three additional songs, closing with “Rent I Pay.”

Supporting Spoon on this whiplash of a tour is Nicole Atkins. Her brassy rock and roll swagger makes her a perfect opening act. Sporting a blond wig, Nicole strapped on a guitar for most of her time on stage. Rocking through her catalog she was backed by an ad hock band created for this tour. Currently living in Nashville, Atkins is Jersey born and bred. She cut her teeth in the Asbury music scene and her take no prisoner demeanor confirmed that. Giving acknowledgement to her rock and roll mentors, Nicole and band finished out with Led Zeppelin’s “What is and What Should Never Be.”

Being such a short tour, those that had the opportunity to catch this combination of acts are much the richer. Better yet, being a precursor to the live stream from L.A., Spoon fans have much to look forward to.

Phil Lesh wrapped up his second three-show run at The Capitol Theatre on Wednesday, October 20, 2021. The evening featured Stuart Bogie and Amy Helm joining Phil, along with Eric D. Johnson, Josh Kaufman, Elliot Peck and Grahame Lesh from Midnight North, Joe Russo and Heartbreaker’s keyboardist Benmont Tench.

Phil Lesh has one more run of shows at The Cap this month, with Phil-O-Ween weekend, from Oct. 29-31, including Nicki Bluhm, Larry Campbell, Griffin Goldsmith, Taylor Goldsmith, Grahame Lesh, Trevor Menear, Lee Pardini, M.C. Taylor and Teresa Williams.

In Focus: Pigeons Playing Ping Pong At The Capitol Theatre
Pigeons Playing Ping Pong were joined by Neighbor on October 15, for the second of a two night run at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester. Dogs In A Pile started the party at Garcia’s at The Capitol Theatre.

The atmosphere at “The Cap” felt familiar and comfortable. It was that cool uncle with the cool T-shirts that was very excited about legalization of certain herbs. It was a relaxed vibe that did not take itself too seriously, which helped cultivate pure enjoyment from fans. Most employees resided at the venue since its reopening and seemed to love working there. The rich history of the venue contributed to a feeling of experience and familiarity. For those cautious to attend an indoor concert.

Fans of Pigeons filled with anticipatory excitement for the next cue in their favorite song. The crowd burst with joy every time their part in the collaboration, and were beautifully illuminated for each moment.

Phil Lesh Announces All His Friends for October Run at The Cap

Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh is making up for lost time from last year with an essential October residency at the legendary Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY. Three different Phil & Friends lineups will perform over three different three-day spans throughout the month, with the nine-night run coming to a close on Halloween. Each lineup brings a little something different to the table, with friends both old and new joining the fray.

The first three-night run is slated for October 11-13 and is set to play host to The Phil Lesh Quintet, aka The Q, the longest running version of Phil & Friends to date. It features longtime friends John Molo on drums and Rob Barraco on keys as well as the guitar stylings of Warren Haynes and Jimmy Herring.

The second run is scheduled for the following week, October 18 – 20. This one will see Stuart Bogie and Amy Helm join Phil on the first and last night of the run, with Eric D. Johnson, Josh Kaufman, Elliot Peck and Phil’s son Grahame set to play on the 19th. This run will also feature Joe Russo on drums and Benmont Tench on keys.

Lastly, a three-night run leading up to Halloween is set to play host to a plethora of musical stars. This includes Nicki Bluhm, Larry Campbell, Grahame Lesh, M.C. Taylor of Hiss Messenger Service, Teresa Williams and various members of Dawes.

Orebolo – Featuring Members of Goose – Announce Winter Tour Stops in Tarrytown and Homer

Orebolo, an acoustic trio featuring Goose members Rich Mitarotonda (vocals, guitar) Peter Anspach (vocals, guitar), Jeff Arevalo (upright bass) have announced a series of six winter tour dates.

In December, the trio will make stops in Upstate New York at Tarrytown Music Hall, and Homer Center for the Arts, as well as Spruce Peak Performing Arts in Stowe, followed by a three shows in Colorado in late January.

The group has built a faithful following nationwide, following a series of virtual festival appearances in 2020, and an acclaimed performance at Lockn’ Presents FRED The Festival in August 2021. Formed during the height of the initial COVID-19 surge, the members of Orebolo shared a home and found comfort in learning new covers and creatively exploring Goose’s deep catalog acoustically.

Starting this project was a source of relief for all of us, especially during such a crazy time. Our initial practice and recording space was inside our solarium – the vibe was really tranquil, and we wanted our listeners to share in that feeling. I’m stoked we have the opportunity to take this out on the road and perform in some incredible rooms.

Leo Kottke and Mike Gordon to Play Tarrytown, Troy and Plattsburgh this December

For the first time in 16 years, guitarist Leo Kottke and bassist Mike Gordon will tour together, in an eagerly awaited series of dates in December.

Acoustic guitar legend Leo Kottke and Phish bassist Mike Gordon first linked up in 2002 for Clone, and followed by 2005’s Sixty Six Steps. The upcoming tour will celebrate last year’s release of the first new Kottke/Gordon album in 15 years, Noon, hailed by Rolling Stone as “full of lilting grooves that go on wild musical tangents.”

The pair also today premiered a 4-song mini set, including performances of the Kottke song “Sheets” and “How Many People Are You,” which has found a spot in the rotation both with Phish and Mike Gordon Band. Both tracks are found on Noon, with Phish drummer Jon Fishman appearing on “How Many People Are You.” The set is rounded out with the Kottke classic “Rings,” and “Disco” from the duo’s 2002 release, Clone.

Bob Dylan “Rough and Rowdy Ways” Tour nights Stops at Beacon Theatre, Capitol Theatre in November

Bob Dylan will hit the road for the “Rough and Rowdy Ways” tour in November, following his longest touring hiatus since the 1980s. The tour is billed as a worldwide tour running until 2024.

Rough and Rowdy Ways follows the release of the singles “Murder Most Foul” and “I Contain Multitudes,” with the former earning Dylan his first-ever #1 song under his own name on any Billboard chart. Dylan has also announced a 1980s-era bootleg series release, and streamed a concert called Shadow Kingdom.

Dylan’s fall dates will also mark the return of the road band, a slightly altered version of the group that hit the road in the fall of 2019, with two new members featured alongside regulars Charlie Sexton, Tony Garnier and Donnie Herron.

The tour makes stops in NYC on November 19-21 at The Beacon Theatre, and then Bob Dylan will hold a two-night run right after at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester. Tickets will go on sale Oct. 1 via BobDylan.com.

Larkin Poe to Headline Monster Energy Outbreak Tour, Dates in Tarrytown, Albany and Buffalo

Larkin Poe, the Grammy nominated sister duo of Atlanta-bred, Nashville-based singer/songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Rebecca and Megan Lovell, will be hitting the road with the Monster Energy Outbreak Tour this Fall. They’ll bring their brand of gritty, raw, and in your face rock n roll on a 27-date cross-country tour that kicks off on September 15 in St. Louis and will continue through the fall and winter.

Rebecca & Megan of Larkin Poe create their own brand of Roots Rock ‘n’ Roll that is gritty, soulful, and flavored by their southern heritage. Originally from Atlanta and currently living in Nashville, they are descendants of tortured artist and creative genius Edgar Allan Poe.

Steely Dan to play Capitol Theatre on “Absolutely Normal” Tour

Steely Dan are ready to rock the East Coast this fall with their new “Absolutely Normal” tour. The tour starts in Miami Beach as the band works their way up to Boston. They will play a two-night stint at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester on November 9 and 10. Tickets for the Cap shows are available for purchase here.

Along with their extensive tour, Steely Dan is releasing two new live albums. The first is a live recording of Donald Fagen’s acclaimed solo album The Nightfly, complete with instrumentation by the Steely Dan Band. The other, Northeast Corridor: Steely Dan Live!, is the first live album by the band in 25 years and was recorded at various venues like the Beacon Theatre in NYC and the Met in Philadelphia. Both live albums will release September 1, with vinyl releases October 1.

Steely Dan’s New York roots run deep. Founded by Fagen and the late Walter Becker when they were students at Bard College in Annendale-on-Hudson, the duo later moved to Brooklyn before settling for many years in Los Angeles. The hit “My Old School” is inspired by Fagen and Becker’s Bard days, chronicling their arrest for marijuana possession with tounge-in-cheek lyrics. Steely Dan have performed at countless iconic New York venues beyond the Cap and the Beacon, including SPAC, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, and Madison Square Garden.

Fagen and the band will play through Northeast Corridor: Steely Dan Live! along with additional hits at the first Cap show (Nov. 9), and through the entirety of their iconic fifth studio album The Royal Scam on Nov. 10. So MaNY Roads: The Grateful Dead in New York State

Few bands have a relationship with the state of New York like the Grateful Dead. Outside of California, the Grateful Dead have performed more shows in New York than any other state.

With 309 unique shows performed across the Empire State in a 28 year span, beginning at Tompkins Square Park on June 1, 1967, the Grateful Dead made New York a home away from home, with venues of all sizes welcoming them during their career.

Over the past few years, NYS Music has looked back on some of these shows, whether they be archival releases, or an iconic show worthy of a closer look. In 2020, we began to look intently at the history of the Grateful Dead in the Empire State, and in doing so, discovered some overlooked diamonds in the rough.

While performances at Madison Square Garden, The Knickerbocker Arena and Barton Hall garner the glory, there are shows that are equally compelling which we took a second look at. Whether the performance was in The Bronx, Alfred State, Oswego, Glens Falls, Lake Placid or Watkins Glen, each show gets a thorough analysis, with first-hand accounts and memorabilia, as well as audio and/or video of each performance.

We’ve taken all these articles that examine the long history of the Grateful Dead in New York State, as well as Jerry Garcia’s solo and JGB performances, and created an interactive Google Map that allows you to observe the history of the Grateful Dead in New York – So MaNY Roads. You can find info on each of these shows (were you there?), and dive into shows you may or may not have known about.

With more than 300 shows to include in this series, we so far have looked at more than 50 of these shows, all searchable in the map below. More will be added each month as we continue looking at the Grateful Dead and their history in NY.
