  • Watch Saweetie ‘Tap In’ to SNL while Pete Davidson pays Tribute to Staten Island

    SNL returned last night with first-time host Simu Liu accompanied by musical guest Saweetie. The juggernaut rapper, fresh off her own McDonald’s Meal and a newly inked deal for a Netflix series, performed favorite hits and a brand new single for the crowd.

    The episode opened with Cecily Strong parodying Judge Jeanine Pirro of Fox News discussing the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict. Chloe Fineman played a white female analyst discussing the shocking nature of the exoneration, while Chris Redd’s Howard University professor notes the American justice system has behaved this way before. When Fineman mourned “This is not who we are!” a sarcastic Redd responded, “I kind of feel like it is though…” James Austin Johnson returned with his pitch-perfect Trump impression. Above all, the sketch was a strong, hilarious opening.

    Simu Liu, star of Marvel’s Shang Chi And The Legend of the Ten Rings, brought energy and ease to his monologue. He joked at his status as the first “openly Chinese superhero,” and a strong later sketch between Liu and Bowen Yang expanded the joke. In his opener, he mainly skewered his Canadian heritage and the uniquely polite way he obtained his breakout role. Spoiler alert: he tagged them on Twitter, and got about ten likes. 

    Firstly, Saweetie hit the stage with a montage of “Tap In” and “Best Friend.” Dressed in old Hollywood glam and flanked by dancers in tutu’s, she introduce a jazzy rendition of “Tap In.” In a floor-length gown, she performed a gracefully choreographed routine. As the whistle-heavy beat faded in, her backup dancers removed the train on her dress.

    With her blood-red curls serving Jessica Rabbit, Saweetie cemented her status as a classic R&B girl with a diverse catalog. Dance, fashion, rapping, singing; all of it is in a day’s work for Saweetie. Above all, the montage was a celebration of Saweetie at her peak, highlighting her greatest hits.

    Throughout the night, standout skits included a “karaoke recap” from a dive bar, aptly parodying many types of karaoke singer. From “Guy Who Was Doing Great Until The High Notes Came In” to “Girl Who Claimed Her Friend Signed Her Up But We All Know The Truth,” each was spot on. Later on, Simu Liu perfectly embodied a crotchety professor in a skit of a 420-friendly Friendsgiving celebration.

    Later, Saweetie returned to the stage to perform a brand new single, “Icy Chain.” On the track, she bodies an opportunity to flex her harder flows. She impressed with her breathless flows, never missing a beat even in the midst of a high kick or twerk. Clearly, Saweetie takes her craft seriously. However, the rapper wasn’t afraid to have fun during “Icy Chain,” laughing and smiling through the number.

    Pete Davidson recruited fellow Staten Islander Method Man and rapper Big Wet for “Walkin in Staten,” a parody of Marc Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis.” Cohn was at first reluctant to join the video, but then appeared with the trio, adding to the hilarious take on the outer borough. Davidson and company sang about the unique attractions found in Staten Island – pizza places on every corner, bagel shops, and pizza places within bagel shops, among others.

    SNL will return on December 11th with Billie Eilish serving double duty as host and musical guest. Later next month, Charli XCX will perform alongside host Paul Rudd on December 18th.

  • Keeping His Composer: Michael Vincent Waller On His Journey into the world of Hip Hop

    Staten Island native, Michael Vincent Waller’s latest release — The Lex Luger assisted, CLASSIC$ — has re-engineered the way we look at the compatibility between genres, opening new possibilities of unforeseen musical collaborations. A hip-hop album with trap drums and classical symphonies, with trap artists rhyming over it. Two separate worlds coming together, for a harmonious result. 

    Yet, MVW has always been a hip-hop fan, admittedly listening to the genre “exclusively” during his adolescent years. However, his musical palate broadened when he began to receive piano lessons from his grandmother, establishing a foundation for future endeavors. 

    His foray into instrumentation did not leave an immediate impact though, as he didn’t develop the urge for playing the piano until his time at NYU. 

    I didn’t think about music as something I wanted to do, I just loved listening to music. And then when I went to NYU, I saw it was a really artistic place and I was like, I want to play piano.

    From there, he switched gears as his musical choices became varied. Indie Rock, Classical and Jazz became the new norm for a budding MVW. As a composer, he’s studied under, La Monte Young, worked with Phill Niblock and has had his music fill venues such as Carnegie Hall, ISSUE Project Room, Roulette and Palais de Tokyo Museum. At the same time, he often listened to Biggie and Wu Tang for inspiration while composing. 

    MVW’s Evolution

    One might wonder what would cause an inherently successful classical composer to switch lanes and produce a hip-hop album, but like the rest of the world, life took a halt for MVW beginning in the spring of 2020. After the cancellation of annual music and film festival, South by Southwest, and being forced to record and produce remotely, Waller began to coordinate his excursion into the world of hip-hop. 

    After honing his skills remixing electronic records, he sought out platinum-selling producer, Lex Luger (known for his distinct trap drums and use of orchestral sounds) to assist on a remix of his own. The end-product pleased MVW enough to where he thought something bigger could come of it.  

    CLASSIC$ saw hip-hop and classical worlds combine.

    I realized this is more than just a remix, this is something I could actually put to the next level.

    Despite the lack of familiarity between the duo, their chemistry wasn’t that of complete strangers but, rather two accomplished musicians looking to expand their repertoire.

    I reached out to him, he said he liked the music and I started sending him certain samples that I thought would be perfect for beats and everything he sent back to me was perfect. It wasn’t forced, we didn’t have to overthink it. Everything was organic. 

    Debut Album

    Serving as the executive producer to his own project, MVW had to learn the ins-and-outs of putting together a hip-hop album. Which includes, recruiting artists for features, clearing them with labels (which is a meticulous process of its own) and hiring lawyers to make sure contracts were standard. As MVW stepped away from the role of musical composer for this venture, he picked up the duty of musical conductor, working hard to study chords and song structures to figure out how to turn compositions into convincing trap records.

    I worked on the album for 18 months. I would work with the material for long periods of time. I had to arrange it, because I was given feature material, but I had to transform it into a convincing song, given what I had. That was the really creative part for me that I started to enjoy, tapping into the composer side of me. 

    Despite this being his first and an independently funded rap album, CLASSIC$ features a host of well-known trap artists, who best complimented the minimal drums and snares (ValeeLilGotitDuke Deuce). While giving important, tone-setting roles to lesser-known artists (JaydoncloverShanique Marie).

    I got everybody who I wanted cleared. But I set practical goals, I didn’t try to get 15 people on the album.  

    His extensive work in putting the project together gained him an appreciation for the hip hop community, their accepting nature and for staying true to the music.

    I was happy to know that people would appreciate my skills, because it can be nerdy. In hip hop if you have a good sound, that’s what they evaluate you on, ‘is it good?’ which is great.

    On account of how much time, effort and persistence required to make this album a possibility, MVW does intend to gauge the public’s response. But while many artists refer to streams, charts and general statistics to determine success, he refuses to get bogued down by numbers. And as a hip-hop debutant, he has yet to be tainted by the commercial side of the music business. Instead, relying on the tastemakers of the hip-hop community to glean insight on where CLASSIC$ stands as a body of work.

    Putting it out and making it happen, it already feels like a success to me because of how much effort it took and how much it makes it happy. I do it really for me, so I would say on that level it’s a success. The other thing that I’m interested in, is understanding how people respond. To me it’s not about charting, especially as an independent artist. But the fact that people who like and know music respond positively, and frames it to give me something to learn. Even if it’s just for people in the community of hip-hop, that means more to me than one song having a million plays. It’s definitely not trying to be commercial, it’s about art.  As long as I can see the art is out in the world, influencing and inspiring people, then that’s a success for me.

  • Swedish House Mafia will stop at MetLife Stadium in August, First Tour In 10 Years

    Swedish House Mafia have announced an international tour for 2022, their first in 10 years, making a stop in East Rutherford, NJ on Wednesday, August 3, 2022. Long revered by fans for their bombastic live performances, the band’s previous outing, “One Last Tour,” sold over 1 million tickets. The 2022 jaunt will follow the trio’s just announced performance at Coachella 2022 and includes arenas across the United States and Europe.

    Swedish House Mafia have also teamed with The Weeknd for a new single and video, “Moth to a Flame.” The new song was initially teased during the trio’s landmark performance at the MTV VMAs pre-show this summer, and marks the band’s first new music since announcing their reunion this past July with a pair of new singles “It Gets Better” and “Lifetime (feat. Ty Dolla $ign & 070 Shake)” that arrived alongside a cover story for Billboard Magazine and a special performance of both songs on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.

    The trio of songs continue to build anticipation toward the band’s forthcoming full length Paradise Again, slated for release early next year with a Special Tour Edition CD pre-order available now that unlocks exclusive pre-sale tour tickets.

    The band have also just been nominated for awards in both the Best Electronic and Best Nordic Act categories for this year’s MTV EMAs, being held in Budapest on Sunday, November 14th.

  • Owner of Exclusive Wu Tang Clan Album Revealed

    The anonymous owners of the one-of-a-kind Wu Tang Clan album have been revealed. Once Upon a Time in Shaolin — formerly owned by disgraced hedge fund manager and pharmaceutical executive, Martin Shkreli, before being convicted of securities fraud — was seized in 2018 and recently sold by the U.S. government as a part of a $7.4 million forfeiture judgement. 

    After Shkreli was forced to sell the album, the original buyers were kept hidden from the public, with the sale being handled by NYC based lawyer, Peter Coolidge, who revealed that he has been one of the very few to listen to the project.

    It didn’t disappoint at all. It was pretty reminiscent of the ‘90s stuff. The first album was really good. All the first solo albums were good, like, Return to the 36 ChambersLiquid SwordsIronmanOnly Built 4 Cuban Linx, whatever,” he said. “And then they did some albums after that, that were perhaps not their best work. But this is like, up there with the best stuff.

    Now, the new owners of the suis generis album have been revealed to be NFT investment collective, PleasrDAO. The group revealed itself as the anonymous entity that purchased the album from the federal government in July for a reported $4 million.

    While Shkreli clashed with Wu Tang Clan almost immediately after purchasing the album, the new owners — who specialize in digitized art — may have more consumer-friendly plans in mind. While the album comes with a ton of contractual limitations (It can’t be commercially released until 2103; it can’t be remixed or recorded; and it can’t be played in front of large audiences, streamed, or even broadcast online), PleasrDAO Chief Pleasing Officer, Jamis Johnson, revealed to Rolling Stone plans to “bring the album back to the people.” With plans to curate listening parties throughout the world that will allow the general public a chance to hear the

  • MVW and Lex Luger Deliver CLASSIC$

    Opposites come together for a harmonious result on the first collab album between classical music composer, Michael Vincent Waller (MVW) and multi-platinum hip-hop producer, Lex Luger. Together, the duo combine to release a one-of-a-kind project. The 8-song LP sees them explore a sub-genre that has yet to be saturated and could possibly be the foundation for a brand-new wave of innovation.

    The combination of course is the fusion between elements of classical and trap music where the former, which is considered formal, traditional and tedious, meets the laid-back, seemingly careless and braggadocious sub-genre of trap music. 

    I want to take the same attention to detail associated with classical and chamber music and apply it to one of the most viable, listenable, and casual genres, i.e. trap. It’s got freshness and energy, but there are a whole bunch of nuances and details you don’t typically hear in modern rap. I’m trying to take the best of both worlds.

    Hailing from Staten Island, MVW has always been a hip-hop enthusiast and he developed a passion for classic hip-hop such as Wu Tang Clan, The Notorious B.I.G. and A Tribe Called Quest. At the same time, he often listened to Biggie and Wu Tang for inspiration while composing.

    When he began making his foray into the world of hip hop, he recruited Lex Luger to play his counterpart. Although the “Round Of Applause” producer is diversified in his own right, his production still contains trap elements (such as his distinctive snare drum and ihats) that make his presence on CLASSIC$ invaluable. 

    Working on this project was definitely a little challenging. Being in a comfortable zone is cool, but nothing ever grows there. That being said, working on this project helped me try new things and ultimately, I feel like it just made me a better producer.

    The album is curated with artists that not only correspond with the suis generis blend of styles but thrive on it. Jamaican artist, Shanique Marie, brings much-needed energy. Southern Songstress, Jaydonclover — whom MVW discovered from a WIRE Magazine review — is featured on three of the tracks and since the classical instrumentation already perpetuates a solemn feel, her soulful croons become one with the music. Trap connoisseurs Duke Deuce and Lil Gotit also make appearances, while Good Music artist, Valee — who is featured throughout the album — is the missing link that connects everything, effortlessly riding each beat as he maintains the California cool of a long beach surfer with each luxurious idiom he drops. 

    I’ve been composing for 15 years, but I’ve been listening to hip-hop for 20 years. Somehow, they inform each other in my head. This project was a long-time brewing. I’m coming full circle

  • Concerts Announced in all Five Boroughs for NYC Homecoming Week

    Concerts have been announced in all five boroughs of New York City taking place August 14-22, 2021. The stacked lineups will help create New York City’s “Homecoming Week” to celebrate the return of NYC over one year into the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

    Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the lines earlier this week including the mega show being held on Central Park’s Great Lawn which is the centerpiece of the celebration. Outside of the centerpiece event, the theme for the shows will be “It’s Time for Hip Hop in NYC,” with hip-hop, Latin freestyle, dance, freestyle, techno, and funk artists dominating the lineups.

    The concerts will take place at Orchard Beach in The Bronx on, August 16 from 3 to 9:30 PM, Midland Beach on Staten Island on August 17 from 4 to 9:30 PM , Brooklyn Army Terminal in Brooklyn August 19 from 4 to 9:30 PM, Forest Hills Stadium in Queens on 20 from 4 to 9:30 PM, and wrapping up at the Central Park’s Great Lawn in Manhattan on August 21, 5 PM.

  • Wu-Tang members, Ashanti and Ja Rule play first ever Peace and Unity Festival in Staten Island

    Wu-Tang Clan members Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck and Cappadonna, as well as Redman, Ashanti and Ja Rule played the first ever Peace and Unity Festival. The event took place at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden on Saturday July 10th. Dj performances included Funkmaster Flex, Dj Smoove and Dj Outkast.

    The purpose of the Peace and Unity Festival was to bring people from all over the city together after the year and a half long pandemic. Community organizers The Waterteam, Uncle Chase Entertainment, Wakeem Entertainment, and 3J’s Creation Entertainment sponsored the event. It was originally scheduled to be a two-day event, but the organizers decided to cancel Sunday’s show.

  • MVW, Valee and Lex Luger Come Together for “Still Do”

    East Coast meets the Midwest on the Lex Luger assisted banger featuring Chicago rapper, Valee. From Staten Island bred, classical music composer, MVW (Michael Vincent Waller), the two-minute long record is the second single released from his upcoming project, Classic$ (the first hip-hop project from Michael Vincent Waller after releasing three classical albums). With “Still Do” following the Shanique Marie and Lex Luger assisted, “Survey Says.”

    A sui generis collaboration, MVW is recognized in the classical world for his portrayal of  “melodic classicism.” Something that this record subtly and blatantly emphasizes. 

    On the vision behind his upcoming project, MVW explains,

    My core intention on Classic$ is to get classical music into hip-hop without dissolving either. It’s about allowing the production and samples to breathe organically. We’re not simply trying to add orchestral heavy strings. Instead, we’re relying on dark and episodic chamberal moments, which fit naturally.     “Still Do,” is rich in production. It begins with a sensual violin solo which loops throughout before light strings and a thumping drum track starts the record. Light keys are sprinkled throughout the loop and Valee echoes his rhymes of a luxurious life, with trap and classical genres working together symbiotically.

    The production on the song just spoke to me, Valee says of the record. I knew I had to do something different and use a brand new flow for it.

    On Classic$, MVW also recruits multi-platinum producer Lex Luger (known for his extravagant sounding orchestral beats and unique use of ihats to open records), whose work with the likes of Rick Ross, Kanye West, Waka Flocka Flame amongst others have made him world renowned. 

    The two have co-produced multiple records for the album as they have unlocked a bridge between their two worlds.

     I want to take the same attention to detail associated with classical and chamber music and apply it to one of the most viable, listenable, and casual genres, i.e. trap, explains MVW.

    It’s got freshness and energy, but there are a whole bunch of nuances and details you don’t typically hear in modern rap. I’m trying to take the best of both worlds. 

  • Wu Tang Clan To Issue Extremely Limited Photobook

    The lives and times of the Wu Tang Clan has been chronicled heavily (deservedly so) throughout their existence. Beginning with their own personal accounts in their music, to feature interviews, documentariestv series and now, an exclusive Wu Tang Clan photobook will share rare and never seen before images of the rap phenoms. With photography from the likes of; Danny Hastings, PROTIM PHOTO, Kyle Christie and Andy Cantillon, as well as friends and family of the Clan.

    Titled Wu Tang Clan: LEGACY, this large format photography book features more than 300 pages of images and comes encased in a 400-pound sculpted chamber.

    “From conception to the present day, this is the story of the undisputed greatest hip-hop group of all time being unveiled through rare and never before seen photos,” said John “Mook” Gibbons, CEO of Wu-Tang Clan Management, in an official statement. 

    According to the book’s official website, only 36 editions will be made available for purchase, and each comes signed, dated and numbered and with a certificate of authenticity. 

    Each book will be printed and bound in Italian leather and will come encased in a bronze-encrusted black steel chamber individually designed by sculptor Gethin Jones. The design was inspired by the bronze ritual bowls from the Zhou Dynasty, an ancient period considered the pinnacle of Chinese bronzeware crafting, and its first ruler was King Wu-Wang. This comes as no surprise as the Clan’s music — specifically RZA’s production – was heavily influenced by Asian martial arts, beliefs and overall culture. Even the 36 copies being produced serves as an ode to their first album tittle (36 Chambers) and the numerological significance of there being 36 chambers in a Shaolin Temple.

  • Happy Birthday to Blue Oyster Cult Guitarist Richie Castellano!

    Staten Island-born musician, multi-instrumentalist and member of Blue Oyster Cult, Richie Castellano, celebrates his 41st birthday today.

    Growing up in Staten Island, New York, Castellano is a fifth-generation musician who developed his musical talents at a young age. He is also an audio engineer. 

    Castellano earned his degree in Music Production at the State University of New York at Purchase. In 2001, he produced and engineered Regina Spektor’s debut album, 11:11. During his undergraduate career, he won three awards for his talents, including first place in the Songwriter Hall of Fame’s songwriting competition, 1998.

    His versatile musical talents led him to Blue Oyster Cult. Beginning in 2000, Richie Castellano was one of their engineers. However, in early 2004, he received a call that would change his life: Eric Bloom of the band asked him to play bass. A few years later, in 2007, Castellano switched from bass and became the full-time guitarist. 

    His cover of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, in which he played every instrument and sung each harmony, went viral.

    Today, Castellano continues to be a creative force in music. He sometimes works at his family’s music store in Staten Island, while also running a podcast called Band Geek, and continues to engineer and produce music.
