  • Old Westbury Gardens “Music for a Sunday Afternoon” Concert Series Returns

    Old Westbury Gardens on Long Island has announced the return of the “Music for a Sunday Afternoon“ Summer Concert Series, starting this Sunday, July 11.

    The series features “Artist-in-Residence” cellist Suzanne Mueller, who will present four concerts, accompanied by a roster of seasoned performers spanning the genres of classical, jazz, and folk music.

    My collaborators and I are really thrilled to be returning to our musical summer home again this year. It doesn’t feel like summer without these concerts. It’s especially meaningful to me because I had to sit out the 2019 season and most of the 2018 season due to medical issues that kept me homebound and unable to play. I was really looking forward to returning last year and was crushed when we had to cancel.

    Mueller will perform with pianist Elinor Abrams Zayas, The McCarron Bros. Jazz Quartet, classical guitarist Christopher Gotzen-Berg and folk duo Hungrytown over the course of the four Sunday shows. Each performance will bring a different flavor to Mueller’s expert cello playing and blend many genres.

    Each “Music for a Sunday Afternoon” performance will begin at 3PM on the lawn at the Orchard Hill Barn (or inside the Barn in case of inclement weather or extreme heat). Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and should also be aware that COVID-19 protocols are in effect and will be enforced on the dates of the concerts. The Old Westbury Gardens are a scenic and beloved venue for both audiences and performers alike.

    Whether outdoors in a bucolic setting, or indoors, in the event of inclement weather, it has been a special time playing in such a beautiful setting, with very appreciative audiences in attendance. There’s something transformative about playing in Nature, listening to birds singing along with the music, and being surrounded by beautiful gardens and plantings. It puts all involved, performers and audience, into a peaceful state of being.

  • Imperial Triumphant Announce Tour, Halloween at Saint Vitus Brooklyn

    New York avant-garde metal outfit Imperial Triumphant has just announced their Fall 2021 U.S. headline tour. The band will be joined by Pyrrhon starting October 15th in Boston and wrapping up on October 31st in Brooklyn. Imperial Triumphant will be touring in support of their most recent full-length album Alphaville, which came out Summer of 2020. 

    The album was produced and engineered at New York’s Menegroth Studio by Colin Marston and Trey Spruance (Mr. Bungle). The album also features a number of special guests such as Tomas Haake (Meshuggah) on taiko drums, Phlegeton (Wormed) on guest vocals, Yoshiko Ohara (ex-Bloody Panda) as part of the choirs, RK Halvorson as part of the Barbershop quartet, Sarai Chrzanowski as part of the choirs, Andromeda Anarchia (Folterkammer, Dark Matters) as part of the choirs, J Walter Hawkes on the trombone, and Colin Marston on guitars. 

    Imperial Triumphant officially began in 2012 with their debut release Abominamentvm. The line-up consisted of Zachary Ilya Ezrin on guitar/vocals and the rhythm section of their NYC contemporaries: Pyrrhon. Soon they met with drummer Kenny Grohowski and began to feature him on their next two releases Goliath (EP) and Abyssal Gods (LP). In 2015, they introduced bassist Steven Blanco to their lineup. In 2016, they released another EP Inceste, which saw them tour heavily that year with temporary second guitarist Max Gorelick. 2018 brought about their magnum statement, Vile Luxury. The full-length album, written collectively by the trio (Ezrin, Grohowski, Blanco), was a homage to their hometown New York City that brought jazz elements to the avant-garde black metal style in a way never achieved before. Imperial Triumphant is looking forward to performing their newest full-length album, Alphaville, which catapulted them to national recognition.

  • National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene Presents “A Yiddish Renaissance”

    The National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene will present A Yiddish Renaissance this summer. In recognition of this resurgence in interest, the 107-year-old will bring together more than 140 actors and musicians from here at home and across the globe. The two-hour event will showcase some of Folksbiene’s most memorable musical numbers, but also celebrate the life of its Artistic Director, Zalmen Mlotek.

    The benefit concert – debuting on July 26th at 2:00 PM (ET) and available to view through July 30th at 2:00 PM (ET) – will feature some of the most memorable hits from NYTF’s critically acclaimed and award-winning productions as well as sneak peeks of upcoming productions. Stars from across the United States, Israel, England, Germany, Scotland, and the Netherlands will share the screen together. 

    A Yiddish Renaissance: A Virtual Concert Celebration will pay tribute to Mlotek in celebration of his 70th birthday and 50-year career dedicated to Yiddish music and theatre. As he developed new productions and introduced young actors and singers to Yiddish theatre, Mlotek has brought NYTF to new heights as one of New York’s premiere off-Broadway theatre companies and to international recognition, including bringing Joel Grey-directed Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish to life at the Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, and then moving it uptown to Stage 42 Off-Broadway.

    Among those directing and editing the special presentation are: Joanne Borts, Ben Liebert, Stephanie Lynne Mason, Elisha Mlotek, Merete Muenter, Tony Perry, Eleanor Reissa, Allen Lewis Rickman, and Adam B. Shapiro. And the event features musical arrangements by Frank London and D. Zisl Slepovitch.

  • Rene Lopez Releases New Genre-Melding Single “Flamingo”

    Singer-songwriter, guitarist and drummer Rene Lopez has just released his new single, “Flamingo”. A master of cross-genre work, Lopez’ single features Caribbean roots, rhythmic Jamaican ska drum loops, Cuban son montuno with cha-cha-chá influence. “Flamingo” stands as a direct reflection of Lopez’ multicultural upbringing in New York City, where he resides today.

    Son of the famed Puerto Rican salsa musician and trumpet player René López, Rene embraces the traditional roots of his father while incorporating his own unique musical influences, including soul, jazz, funk, and rock.

    An audience can audibly hear this melding of genres- with the fusion of Latin rhythms and instruments like timbales, congas, cowbell, flute, trumpet, Cuban tres and melodies similar to the pop musical soundscape today.

    Dubbed “a one-man song factory” by Félix Contreras of NPR’s Alt.Latino, Lopez takes a personal approach to songwriting. 

    There is also a story that I tell in each song that is basically my own way of dealing with stuff going on in my life [and it] helps me face myself when I sing it out loud.

    Lopez’ ability to write a autobiographical discography that melds Latin music, funk, rock, doo-wop, and soul is what keeps him hitting the mark with these catchy songs. Throughout the course of his work, Lopez’ music has only continued to become more Latinized, invoking a thematic otherness as an immigrant or being from a certain urban ethnic neighborhood. Keeping his songs close to home has reflected an authentic, nostalgic sound  that shows listeners Lopez is “being completely honest with who I am, and a big part of that is my Latin roots,” as well as telling stories of personal relationships and experiences in an unflinching way.

    Written as an ode to a “special woman” Lopez fell in love with after he got divorced, “Flamingo” bears Lopez’ vulnerability. He successfully transformed a situation he dubbed “extremely difficult and heartbreaking” into a beautiful tribute to the experience. Simultaneously graceful and outlandish, the flamingo serves as the perfect metaphor to quantify his unattainable love.

    The title of the single then alludes to the doomed romance due to the lovers’ star-crossed circumstances. Beautiful and tragic, the song is a Latin lullaby of love and healing. The poetic lyrics serve as the perfect gateway into Lopez’ self and coupled with the personal roots of his past, “Flamingo” serves as a testament to Lopez’ past. And evidently, the song is yet another incredible hit to add to his collection of singles, keeping his growing audience waiting for the future.

  • Erykah Badu Announces Fall Tour, Show at Radio City Music Hall

    Soul and R&B songstress Erykah Badu has announced rescheduled dates for her Fall Tour.

    JamBands.com announced Badu’s new dates, which include a show at the iconic Radio City Music Hall on September 30. Badu will also make several appearances on the festival circuit, performing at H.E.R.’s Lights On Festival, ACL Fest, and Pitchfork Festival. All tour dates are listed below.

    Badu’s last official musical project was her But You Caint Use My Phone mixtape, released in 2015. The mixtape received critical praise and Badu has since stated that she is in the process of creating her sixth studio album.

    Badu also opened an online store, Badu World Market, in February of 2020. Along with selling merchandise, Badu World Market highlights smaller creatives and compiles videos and streamed performances through “Badu TV”.

    Badu’s performance at Radio City will be one of the landmark venue’s first shows since COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted in New York. Other names coming to Radio City this August and September include Gabriel Iglesias, Quinn XCII and Devo. Tickets for Badu go on sale Friday (7/9) at 10 AM.

  • “Never Forget Concert” to Commemorate and Honor Victims of 9/11

    The “Never Forget Concert,” a night of live music to honor and commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11, will be held at the Northwell Health Center at Jones Beach Theater on Saturday, August 21 at 7 p.m.

    Hosted by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, proceeds from the “Never Forget Concert” will help provide mortgage-free homes to catastrophically injured veterans and first responders, Gold Star and Fallen First Responder families with young children. 

    The concert will feature performances by Journey, The Chainsmokers, and the Steve Miller Band with special guests Jesse Colin Young, John Fogerty, Ann Wilson of Heart, Lee Brice, Wyclef Jean, Gavin DeGraw, We McDonald, Flo Rida, Danny Rodriguez, and Jax. Guitarist G.E. Smith is serving as musical director.

  • Blue Note Jazz Club Announce Chris Botti Holiday Residency

    New York City’s Blue Note Jazz Club has announced the return of Grammy Award-winning master trumpeter and composer Chris Botti to the Blue Note stage for his 17th annual holiday residency.

    From Dec 6 to Jan 2, Botti will perform two shows a night at 8 pm and 10:30 pm ET. The schedule includes performances on Christmas and New Year’s Eve, ringing in 2022, and rounding out Blue Note’s historic 40th anniversary celebration.

    Since 1981, Blue Note Jazz Club has been a cultural institution in New York City. Fans have anxiously awaited Botti’s return to Blue Note Jazz Club since his last holiday residency in 2019. Previous concert-goers have seen the jazz-pop powerhouse’s usual Gold and Platinum albums, paired with Blue Note’s usual surprise drop-ins and celebrity cameos, including Sting, John Mayer, Caroline Campbell, and Veronica Swift. Following the jazz club’s 15-month closure due to the pandemic, this year promises even more surprises and star power. 

    Speaking not only for myself, but for my band as well, it’s the gig we look forward to all year long,” said Botti. “Blue Note is the best jazz club in the world, in the best city, at the best time of the year. We’ve been doing it for 17 years, and to come to such an incredible environment with fans from all over the world, many who have seen us in various cities throughout the world earlier that year, and who then come to our gig at the Blue Note is a very special feeling. We hope it never ends.

  • Flushing Town Hall Announces a Virtual Tribute to the American Melting Pot

    Flushing Town Hall Announces a virtual tribute to the American Melting Pot on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at 7PM EST. The event will be focusing on and celebrating diverse music and musicians in celebration of the national holiday.

    Flushing Town Hall is known as being a  Smithsonian affiliate and presents multi-disciplinary global arts that engage and educate the global communities of Queens and New York City in general. The venue has been around since 1979 and is known for supporting local, immigrant, national, and international artists. Flushing Town Hall aims to serve and represent diverse communities in the world and strive to uphold the legacy of inclusiveness that has defined our community since the Flushing Remonstrance of 1657.

    This Flushing Town Hall  celebration of the American Melting Pot is being supported by the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation, the monthly Jazz Jams have been led since 2016 by Astoria resident Carol Sudhalter. House band members include illustrious musicians Joe Vincent Tranchina, Scott Neumann, and Eric Lemon.

    Carol Sudhalter, Flushing Town Hall’s Jazz Band leader spoke on this upcoming celebration saying, “From Latin Jazz to Miles Davis’ Sketches of Spain, music from practically every culture eventually finds its way into the jazz idiom, enriching its array of colors and sounds. In July we look forward to seeing how each participant contributes their own creative corner of the picture!”

    In the past 15 months, streams by Flushing Town Hall have hosted over 200 musicians. The upcoming American Melting Pot celebration will host even more musicians adding to the numbers. Musicians who performed in 2020 are now welcome to return to perform in the upcoming performance. Each month, up to five returning musicians and up to 15 new musicians can participate. Selection is on a first-come, first-served basis. 

    Musicians interested in participating on July 14 should email education@flushingtownhall.org with the suggested three- to four-minute tune they intend to play in line with this month’s theme. The performance can be live or a pre-recorded audio or video (but not a professional, edited recording such as a CD or YouTube video).


    Viewers can tune in to Flushing Town Hall’s Facebook page or Zoom on Wednesday, July 14 at 7:00 PM (EST) to join the live event for free, without registration.

  • SummerStage Announces Free Shows for the 2021 Season

    SummerStage announced free shows for their 2021 season. There will be six shows put on between July through September and will take place at the Seaside Park Community Arts Center & the Coney Island Amphitheater. 

    SummerStage free outdoor festival and a seasonal outdoor venue that’s located in Central Park. It is presented by Capital One City Parks Foundation and annually presents approximately 100 performances in 15-18 parks throughout the five boroughs of New York City.  The six free performances will take place at the Coney Island Amphitheater.

     Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams spoke on the return of SummerStage saying,  “The return of SummerStage to the Coney Island Amphitheater and other outdoor venues throughout New York City fits the bill for exciting summer activities in Brooklyn. New Yorkers have endured much and contributed even more during one of our city’s darkest periods. Re-opening activities that reiterate what makes New York City great is a welcome addition to any summer ‘to do’ list.”

    The six free shows will include GRAMMY-award-winning disco hitmaker Gloria Gaynor who is performing on July 17 with Harlem-via-East London selector DJ Stormin Norman of Disco Sequestered. On July 18 Puerto Rican via the Bronx singer/songwriter and the “Princess of Salsa” La India will take the stage on Sunday. On August 7 Multi-platinum R&B artist Ginuwine will celebrate legendary hip-hop DJ Funk Flex’s birthday with special guests who are TBA. On August 28 SummerStage will present Go Brooklyn! Stetsasonic & Friends – 40th Anniversary Show featuring beat-box, sampling and a live performance mixing R&B, jazz, dancehall and rock with these legendary hip-hop pioneers, starring Prince Paul. On August 29, INVINCIBLE: A Glorious Tribute to Michael Jackson, the number one Michael Jackson tribute show in the world, will feature the world’s most authentic Jackson impersonators with the Bronx DJ KS 360 kicking off the evening. The Coney Island season will wrap up on September 15 with Reggae Gold meets Soca Gold in association with VP Records, a reggae and dancehall showcase presented by the Caribbean and woman-owned record label based in Queens. All performances at the Coney Island Amphitheater will be free and open to the public, no tickets required.

    SummerStage also announced the additional free performances in Central Park this summer. On July 14, a Bastille Day Celebration will be presented by the French Consulate in New York, the French Institute Alliance Française and CAFUSA featuring a jazz quintet headlined by GRAMMY-nominated singer Kavita Shah, guitarist Matt Munisteri, bassist Matt Penman, drummer Ferenc Nemeth, and violinist Olivier Manchon performing a selection of beloved French classics, a get-up-and-dance set by star Joachim Garraud.  On September 1, critically acclaimed indie rock band and SummerStage alums Yo La Tengo will perform a free show in Central Park with underground rock band, Mountain Movers opening the show. Originally formed 30 years ago in Hoboken, New Jersey, the band has recorded 16 studio albums with their latest release, We Have Amnesia Sometimes, recorded during the peak of the pandemic. On September 12, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and SummerStage alumna Valerie June will bring her mixture of folk, blues, gospel, soul, Americana, and bluegrass to the stage. Her latest album The Moon and The Stars: Prescriptions for Dreamers, released in March 2021, has been described by Pitchfork as her “most heavy-hearted” and “far-reaching” record.

    On top of announcing it’s upcoming shows SummerStage has also announced that it will no longer require tickets for it’s free performances. All free performances will be open to the public, first come, first served, and accessible to all but will be subject to venue capacity limits and CDC recommendations for health and safety related to COVID-19 with maintaining social distance between audience members.

  • Twiddle’s Frendsgiving returns to the Capitol Theatre November 2021

    Vermont-based jam quartet Twiddle has announced its annual “Frendsgiving” celebration for 2021. This year’s shows will occur on Friday November 26th, and Saturday November 27th at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY.

    Friday night will feature an opening set from guitar virtuoso Keller Williams. Saturday will see an opening set from Connecticut rock outfit Eggy, who make their Capitol Theatre debut.
