  • Jon Fishman credits Syracuse Radio Station’s “Rock Block” during Thanksgiving Episode of “Errant Path”

Syracuse, New York is a comfortable corridor of the state to spend the holidays. Dewitt native Jon Fishman told his satellite radio audience during “The Errant Path”s 63rd episode about featured artist Yma Sumac. Before Yma’s airplay Fishman said “we’re gonna do a couple of her songs back to back through out the show. Like a Rock Block of Yma Sumac music. When I would listen to 95X as a kid they would have these great rock blocks. That’s what your gonna get”

    Jon Fishman

Like Lou Reed who did more than just hear a New York station and play some Rock & Roll… Reed was also a host at a Syracuse University radio station that dropped him because he was “just too weird and cutting edge”. In similar fashion Fishman’s show is also educational. He informed that Yma Sumac could possibly have the widest vocal range of all time. The Peruvian Soprano could span four and a half octaves. Fishman is accurate in picturing her work inside a Quintin Tarantino movie.

    Jon Fishman

Fishman played Herbie Hancocks production of Thelonius Monks composition “Round Midnight” during the episode. NYS music spoke with Trey Anastasio, Tony Markellis, Russ Lawton and Ray Paczkowski about “Thelonius Monks Tips for a gig” this past Year. Catch Fishman on the TAB tune “In Rounds” from the Radio City tape this past Fall channeling Monk’s concepts Live.

    Jon Fishman

The errant path has a buzz. It has an Airheads quality to it. It’s even had interviews with Funkadelic’s Bootsy Collins and Steve Cropper of Stax Records. Fishman also has intuition for the trails different paths under the moon.  On his August 18 “Errant Path” episode, Fishman closed the show for all of us on tour sleeping under strange skies with “Moonlight Mile” by the Stones. He then commented ”For me the sound and feel of Charlie Watts will never get old. I just love that guys drumming. It stands up no matter what’s before it or after.”  This episode was out in orbit a week prior to Charlie Watts giving up his ghost. After his first tour with The Rolling Stones drummer Steve Jordan told Rolling Stone that “Moonlight Mile” was played a lot during rehearsals and that he is still lobbying to play that live if there are more shows in the future.

    Jon Fishman

Fishman gave a great B side nod to The Band the night before Thanksgiving that holds “The Last Waltz” in mind for all out on the town. From their 1999 Tangled up in Blues album with a young Derek Trucks playing rip snorting slide guitar on Bob Dylan’s “One Too Many Mornings.”

Jon Fishman said that Thanksgiving and Valentines Day are his two favorite holidays. “What two things are better than love and being Grateful?” “Halloween is a good one too because it’s fun. That’s also important”

Fishman’s goal during each Errant path episode is to hopefully provide all three. He paid tribute to his own musical journey on air and live from the great Bob Marley’s words… we come to conquer all of the evil in the world using nothing but music. Fishman said “I think that’s pretty much the best intent that you can have from a musical perspective”

Bob Marley told the Landmark Theater in Syracuse in 1978 “Reggae Music is like the news, it’s the peoples music. Herb is the healing of the nation right?” Fish attended a King Crimson Show at the Landmark during his years in Syracuse. On October 5 2001, Jon Fishman had Merl Saunders and his Funky Friends, Col. Bruce Hampton and the Code Talkers, and Sand Bear play the Landmark as a tribute to his mother, philanthropist and longtime Syracuse artist Mimi Fishman.

Mimi Fishman Art, Eggplant Diner Syracuse

Jon & Merl treated the crowd to an improvisational jazz jam that launched in to a Latin flavored rendition of “Fire on The Mountain”. Like Woodstock’s Levon, Cuse’s Fish led the whole cast through “The Weight” and “Turn on your Love Light” with Colonel Bruce Hampton. Steely Dan just closed their Absolutely Normal Tour at Landmark on Tuesday night. David Byrne brought his American Utopia to Landmark in September 2018. Ringo Starr had his All Star Band to Landmark in 2000. The Rolling Stones spent Thanksgiving in Syracuse in 1981 performing two shows at the Dome over the holidays.

Artists such as Alan Evans from Buffalo, Steve Gadd from Rochester and Jon Fishman from Syracuse are part of a rock block of Upstate New York drummers. They link off that unbroken chain of groove that keeps inspiring the young cats. Fish definitely locked in to the rhythm of the saints on his nine piece kit trailing off Cyro Baptista’s bells and whistles at Radio City on October 3 4 2021. Remember at Dinosaur BBQ when he told the table that his groove on Phish’s Fee was influenced by Sade’s Smooth Operator? Don’t doubt me. Enjoy Phish’s Dinner and a Movie for left over Clifford Ball footage all weekend. Fish & Phish return live to Madison Square Garden December 29 through New Years Day. Fish gets down with New Orleans cats George Porter Jr and legendary percussionist Cyril Neville on some Dead tunes in March 2022 in Maine.

  • Blue Star Radiation Play First Show in Syracuse at Westcott Theater

The debut show of Blue Star Radiation on November 18th at the newly renovated Westcott Theater in Syracuse New York, followed by Putnam Place in Saratoga Springs, Nectar’s in Burlington and Oxbow Brewing and Bend in Portland, Maine. The four night tour before the holidays makes it a fantastic voyage through New England.

Composition versus improvisation. moe., Kung Fu, The Breakfast, Lotus, Percy Hill, Ghosts of Jupiter, and Assembly of Dust all come from a heavy catalog of music that can be played differently any given night. Blue Star Radiation is a new band that glows off these concepts that includes Vinnie Amico on drums, Rob Derhak on bass, Tim Palmieri on guitar and Nate Wilson on B3 Hammond keys and flute.

    blue star radiation

It is appropriate that moe.’s ryhthm section of Rob and Vinnie started this mini run on a Thursday in Upstate, New York. After all, they have played in front a rowdier 220,000 down the thruway in Rome during Woodstock 99. There is a Danko/ Helm quality of the two when they are on a New York stage that radiates. The freshly renovated Westcott filled the old cinema to the back of the house with new premium seating alongside the left stage. moe.’s “The Pit” opened the inaugural performance and helped welcome everyone to a comfortable spot in the room to groove. Nate Wilson then plays his original “Eye of the Yellow Tiger.”

The new four piece also filled the first set with some back in black covers. The Black Crowes‘ “Wiser Time” and Santana’s “Black Magic Woman” created a sandstorm of surprises. The band also claimed they were playing ‘Set List Yahtzee’ with a malleable list of songs to pull from. Again, it was a Thursday night for the first of four shows, why stick to the plan?

The second set unfolded with some some chilling viking rock. Nate Wilson’s keys and vocals took Led Zeppelin’s “No Quarter” to warn the frosty November crowd that snow falls hard and don’t you know, the winds of Thor are blowing cold. (Led Zeppelin did play in Syracuse at the War Memorial in November of 1969.) What a song to cover ahead of the partial lunar eclipse that night for the blood moon that hasn’t been seen since the 1440’s. One of the first snows of the year did arrive just as the eclipse unfolded at 4 AM giving way to Thor.

The band did give a lighter nod to the Syracuse, New York suburb of Liverpool by covering “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window” by the Beatles. Tim Palmieri took lead on this as he has on many Sunday Beatles acoustic sets he’s been known to do in New Haven, CT. The band encored with the moe. classic “Opium,” no quarter notes in these lyrics, It’s eight AM not a quarter past three, flowers and fog won’t you rescue me.

    blue star radiation
    poster by Matt Leunig

Rob Derhark simply thanked the crowd for letting them do their thing and have a week of music to just simply cut loose to. Tim Palmieri helped raise a glass and get the Westcott crowd to cheers to moe. guitarist Chuck Garvey. The simplicity of appreciation to play music that is essentially improvisational and unplanned transcends after the show is over.

Blue Star Radiation – The Westcott Theater, Syracuse, NY – November 18, 2021

Set 1: The Pit, Eye of the Yellow Tiger, Wiser Time, Blue Jeans Pizza, Dance Hall Days, Black Magic Woman

Set 2: Locomotive Breath, Mar De Ma, All in Stride, She Came in Through the Bathroom Window, Sign, No Quarter, Bloody Well Right

  • Gemini Syndrome Takes over Sharkey’s in Liverpool

On November 6th, Sharkeys Bar and Grill in Liverpool hosted Gemini Syndrome on their tour with support from Otvtlier and Pushing Veronica, there was supposed to be another band called Them Damn Kings but unfortunately they had to back out. If you’ve never been to Sharkey’s, it’s a unique venue as the stage is separate from the bar and restaurant, which thrives in the summertime but the owner has adapted it to be used year round.

The opening act, Pushing Veronica started off the night with lots of energy and got the crowd moving. Ovtlier was the next band up and took the show up a notch with their performance, and stage presence; they are a truly unique band with a hybrid sound, also, a couple of the members are native to the state.

    gemini syndrome

After having thrilling performances from the other acts, it was time for Gemini Syndrome to take the stage. Gemini Syndrome was formed back in 2010 in Los Angeles, California and has toured with Fiver Finger Death Punch, In This Moment, Avatar, and many more. Just like the other bands, Gemini Syndrome has a unique sound. After the show, they stuck around greeting fans and signing things.

Even though the night was cold, you didn’t feel it between the heat from the heaters, and heat that the bands brought. Would definitely would check out Sharkeys Bar and Grill to see their upcoming lineup of shows.

  • Joe Altier, Jess Novak & Cait Devin play ‘Hazel’s Way’ Benefit at ONCO in Tully

On Sunday, November 7, ONCO Fermentations in Tully, New York hosted a benefit of music and activities to celebrate the dedication of a new town road, “Hazel’s Way,” in support of Hazels Hope Foundation. This brand new town of Tully street located off Meetinghouse road across from ONCO was named “Hazel’s Way” in honor of thirteen year old Cazenovian Hazel Shaw, who passed in April from a rare ninth chromosome disorder.

    ONCO

The event raised over $3000 for Hazel’s Hope & families of children with special needs. A fashion with compassion idea that keeps on growing.

Hazel knew how to walk but wasn’t able to tell her body how to do it and she knew what she wanted to say but the words didn’t always come out. From her wheelchair and communication device Hazel’s love for art flourished during her days.

Her finger paintings inspired her Aunt Debby Martin to incorporate Hazel’s art work into scarves. Debbie Martin fashions added the Hazel & Friends line to her collection in 2014. It utilizes the designs of children with disabilities on scarves to raise funds to build playgrounds and support genetic research towards “Hazel’s Hope.”

    Hazel & Friends scarf

Hazel enjoyed her life by spending time with her sisters Pearl & Mabel, enjoying dance parties, musicals, and fireworks. The seasonably sunny Sunday had all the elements Hazel loved. Her smiling spirit could be felt shining on all those enjoying the benefit. No fireworks but local Labrador Mountain hang gliders could be seen in the skies above ONCO throughout the day.

    ONCO

Syracuse musician Joe Altier performed a few moving songs for the ceremony on his piano. It helped launch the full crowd into the day’s festivities.

Central New York rockers Jess Novak and Cait Devin performed a special acoustic matinee set from 4 PM till 6 PM. Some tiny dancers in the crowd also helped on their tambourines. Jess Novak joined on violin during Cait Devins’ acoustic set for a jam on the Allman Brothers Band classic “Whipping Post,” Cait definitely helped put her own vibe on this legendary song.

Jess Novak tapped her foot tambourine along with the the tiny dancers in the crowd for a cover of Tedeschi Trucks Band soul refresher “Anyhow.” Jess put her own spin after looping the guitar rhythm for a Larry Campbell-like fiddle solo on the violin before ending the tune. The duo really channeled these southern artists’ sound and their own material in the Southern Tier on Sunday.

On Sunday, November 28, Jess Novak and her band will hop down Route 20 through the tier to Meires Creek in Cazenovia for their new Thousand Lives album release party. The Jess Novak Band continues the tour in support of the album as they return to ONCO Fermentations on December 4.

ONCO will also be bringing local talent Biggs & Young on Friday November 12 and a special Thanksgiving Eve party with The Shylocks. After the holiday, The Vectors are set to rock on November 26.

    ONCO

ONCO is one of Central New York’s best new music venues, offering live music weekly in its “cozy warehouse-style” tasting room or outside in the beer garden when seasonally allowed.  A new 3400 square foot Back Space area is under construction for hosting larger groups and music acts. It currently serves as a raw but inviting overflow space and features indoor games such as cornhole and foosball while under construction.

    ONCO

ONCO offers a rotating taplist of 12 house brewed beers along with NYS wine and hard ciders. Starting November 4 and running all Fall and Winter ONCO is partnering with Spinner Culinary LLC and Naan Ya’ Business food truck to pair simple exciting food to your ONCO cold beverage tasting experience.

ONCO is just off I-81 twenty five minutes south of Syracuse and just 18 minutes north of Cortland. Arrive by car, bicycle, or snowmobile (ONCO is a Tully Trailblazer’s trail head). Just minutes from Song Mountain, Labrador Hollow, and other outdoor activities, ONCO is a welcome addition to Southern Onondaga County, offering a relaxed vibe to go with great music, food, and of course, beer. #Tullyrocks

  • Salt City Waltzes to Del Lago Casino for The Band tribute Concert

The Del Lago Casino venue “The Vine” is bringing an infamous night from San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom back to life. The famed concert of “The Last Waltz” will be recreating music by “The Band” at the Del Lago Casino on Saturday November 13th. The evening’s playbill includes over 40 performers as part of “The Salt City Waltz.” The 2021 edition promises to feature new faces and music added to the show. The production inside The Vine offers a glimpse into the 1970’s Winterland Ballroom. It will transport the concert goers to the same movie lens Martin Scorsese shot the original in.

    Salt City Waltz
    Rick Danko of the Band

The classic house band will feature Los Blancos from Syracuse featuring Mark Tiffault on drums, Colin Aberdeen on Guitar, and Steve Winston on Bass. The addition to their core of Scott Ebner on Piano, Mark Westers on Guitar, and Bill Barry on Organ will help shape the Vine stage nicely.

It should make no difference that Colin Aberdeen of Los Blancos saw the legendary Rick Danko of “The Band” perform a special solo acoustic show at the Hotel Syracuse in the 1990’s. The guests at the original “Last Waltz” included Ringo Starr, Dr John, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Ronnie Wood, Van Morrison and Neil Young to name a few. The guests joining the Salt City Waltz are The Old Main, Brendon Gosson, George Rossi, John McConnell, Mike Mahwinney, Joe Altier, Pete McMahon, Rex Lyons, Carolyn Kelly, Andy Comstock, Bill Ali, Joe Whiting, Mike Frisina & Ben Sumner.

Jay Collins returns to Salt City Waltz

The Salt City Waltz Ensemble at the Vine in Del Lago will consist of Gary Frenay on Bass, Cathy Lamanna on Drums, Mark Hoffmann on Mandolin, Chris Eves on Guitar, Jonah Smith on Vocals/Piano and Liz Fiddle on naturally….fiddle. Guesting with them will be Central New York Songbirds Donna Colton, Joanna Jewett, Maureen Henesey and Steven Cali. As well as Opus Black String Ensemble, Ronnie Leigh and Bruce Gerow.

To make the performance sound full circle at the Vine please welcome the Levon Helm Studio Horns. Featuring Jay Collins on Tenor Saxophone, Erik Lawrence on Baritone/ Alto sax, Steve Bernstein on Trumpet. Special guest on trombone and tuba, from Bruce Springsteen E Street Band Clark Gayton will join the Waltz this year. As Levon Helm once said, “I love horns and the bigger the band, the better it sounds in my ear.”

    Salt City Waltz

Producer Stacey Waterman has curated all four editions of the Salt City Waltz; creating an atmosphere very much like that Thanksgiving night in 1976, right down to a chandelier. The idea behind this show is to celebrate the music of The Band and The Last Waltz. The musicians who assemble for this each year are the cream of the crop and leave the audience feeling thankful. You can purchase tickets to the event here.

Levon Helm’s infamous studio barn in the Hudson Valley is still hosting their own live music. The music never stopped through his daughter Amy Helm and the list of other great acts to still turn the same wheel. Music also lives on at Bob Dylan’s Big Pink House that The Band famously recorded at in Woodstock as well.

The Power of Music just kinda kills all those ills. It cures everything and you’ve got more energy because of the music. And I’ve Never Seen it Fail. Its good for ya…real good for ya

  • A Stormy Monday Blues Sermon with Eric Gales Band at Homer Center for the Arts

Eric Gales brought his incredible five-piece touring band to the Homer Center for the Arts on Monday, October 18, 2021. Gales starts his shows in a similar manner on the microphone by himself discussing the hardships he and all of us have taken on over our lifetime. Eric told the crowd, “If you haven’t cried the blues the past 18 months then god forgot to pass you out a soul.”

    Eric Gales Band
Photo by Out Loud Pictures, LaDonna Gales, Eric Gales, Nick Hayes

From this angle, Eric began his performance on the acoustic guitar talking about the same blues that his grandfather had. His grandfather used to play with Howling Wolf and Muddy Waters. Gales said he wanted to spread the spirit and the inspiration his grandfather instilled in him. During the fitting titled “Grandaddy Blues,” the rest of the band appeared behind him on stage following suit to the groove. On percussion and backing vocals was his wife, LaDonna Gales, Nick Hayes on drums, and on bass from Brooklyn, Nil Jones.

    Eric Gales Band
Photo by Out Loud Pictures, Eric Gales band

Eric made sure the microphones and sound were on point chuckling at the familiarity of its resonance in an old church. Gales is no stranger to Jimi Hendrix’s electric church. Eric was part of the cast touring with Jimi’s bassist Billy Cox, the jellyfish Buddy Miles on drums, and Stevie Rays’ Chris Layton for the “Experience Hendrix Tour.” Robert Ranndolph was there too,

He even educated the crowd that Jimi played a right handed guitar but strung it left handed. For clarification, Gales and bassist Nil Jones were playing completely upside down and backwards.
So naturally as a salute they played Gales original “Southpaw Serenade.”

In between songs, Gales inner tales were serenading the crowd to a wide range of stories. From his funk playing days in Minnesota that caught the eye and ear of the legendary Prince to his overall approach on life. Eric told the crowd “I believe laughter and music are the best forms of communication and medication.” Gales took one four-minute break the whole night, while Jones helped rattle the brick inside Homer for a bass solo.

Gales returned to the stage fired up saying, “I’m getting tuned up I feel a sermon coming on, it’s been far too long.” At the end of a two and half hour performance, Eric treated the crowd to a bouncy funked up version of “Voodoo Child” that led to a blended jam of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” and AC/DC’s “Back in Black” to remind the audience it is still Rocktober. Tony Hall told NYS Music after seeing Gales footage, “Hes a bad mother fucker”

Jimi Hendrix once said “When I get up on stage -well, that’s my whole life. That’s my religion. My music is electric church music.” Robert Cray looked to the ceiling at the Homer Center for the Arts last month during his performance and said “Jimi Can you hear me?” Eric Gales and his band channeled the same energy on a stormy Monday to start the week at the electric church in Homer.

Ana Popovic crushed the European leg of Experience Hendrix and The Center this year. Samantha Fish killed at the center Wednesday November 3rd. Mississippi’s Christone “Kingfish” Ingram took the Delta Roads from Mississippi to Homer, New York the night before Samantha. They are all blues disciples.

NYS Music loved that Eric started the week in Homer to only link up with Gary Clark Jr On “When my Train Pulls in” down the road in Greensboro. Flotations groovy I said a jelly fish will tell ya that. NYS Music agrees with Santana on Gales…its all a piece of the blues disciples history. Tony Hall and Arsenio Hall said it best “Yea he’s bad”

  • The Lost Horizon in Syracuse Host The Black Dahlia Murder “Up From the Sewer” Tour

Syracuse is a host to a bunch of local venues, one in particular, The Lost Horizon which was established in 1976 was host to The Black Dahlia Murder “Up From The Sewer” tour but they were not alone. The tour was also accompanied by After The Burial, Carnifax, Rivers Of Nihl, and Undeath.

     The Black Dahlia Murder

All bands on this tour have been traveling together, so there weren’t any local acts but one band is a familiar sight to many, Undeath is actually a Rochester native. The Lost Horizon may not be a big venue when compared to others but many came out to the show and many circle pits were made. Head over to their site and check out the upcoming shows.

  • In Focus: Lil Tjay ‘Destined to Win Tour’ Stops at the Westcott Theater

Lil Tjay, born in the Bronx, has become at just 18 years old one of his generation’s fastest breakout rappers, having performed since 2019, put on a thrilling show on Saturday, October 9 at the Westcott Theater in Syracuse. The Westcott inhabits a cinema style venue with a capacity of 700 people; it was a complete night and day difference before and after the crowd came through. Giving off a festival pit vibe upfront with a bar in the back, this is a perfect venue for the youth. The stage is easy to see from all angles which is very inviting.

One of many stops on the “Destined to Win Tour” Tjay performed a series of his latest hits such as “Headshot”(featuring. Polo G), and one of his top hits with almost 400 Million plays, “Calling my Phone.” A variety of performers preceded Lil Tday’s set, including Jacosse, The Real Raw Breed, Syndacit, Kyy Stacks, Kaash Paige and Rassandra, also known as RazyBaby, who recently dropped a song with Tjay called “In too Deep.”

Host for the night, Concert Crave, played various top rap hits throughout the concert which entertained the crowd in the pit, VIP section and throughout the known ‘sidelines.’

During “Calling My Phone,” Tjay and crew asked the crowd to put up the flashlights on their phones. This immediately lit up the venue and created an amazing atmosphere for the crowd, fans and all performers.

    lil tjay

Tjay appealed to the audience with phones lit up in the sky and performed “What You Wanna Do,” followed by “Mood Swings.” Shortly after, Rasandra came on stage not once but twice after Lil Tjay brought her out on stage to perform their new single “In too Deep.”

Throughout the show, various artists were throwing water into the crowd, taking selfies with front row fans, encouraging mosh pits, and even throwing merch to various crowd members.

At a prime point, Tjay ripped off his shirt and threw it into the audience, which brought the crowd to an uproar, captivating his audience and making the best of that night.

With millions of views and millions of fans, Tjay’s career has only shortly begun. Relating to the younger crowd, he speaks to his generation, relating to teen and young adult struggles, and also his own. Lil Tjay has come a long way and will continue on the path ahead of him.

Lil Tjay next performs in New York at Citi Field on October 30, part of Rolling Loud. More info here.
