Puddles Pity Party performed this past Sunday, December 12 for a few hundred engaged fans at The Egg in Albany. You may be familiar with Puddles from his over 800,000 subscriber Youtube Channel, his appearance on America’s Got Talent, or his performances with Post Modern Jukebox. For the uninitiated, Puddles appears as a large and somber clown and sings reimagined covers with his bellowing voice of gold.
Puddles may be a sad clown, but his performance was filled with humor, irony, and a positive outlook on life. The singing clown put his own spin on a number of hits including Billie Eilish’s “When the Party’s Over,” Lorde’s “Royals” and REM’s “Everybody Hurts.” These covers were often accompanied by videos and act outs that gave new meaning to the lyrics. Musician and comedian, Dave Hill, also joined Puddles on stage throughout the night after opening the show.
Puddles and Co. were full of energy and made themselves at home in The Egg. The stage slowly became littered with tissues, glitter, picture frames, and clothes as the show progressed. Puddles Pity Party found themselves running from the mess and into the crowd throughout the night as they sang and soloed with the audience. At one point, Puddles moved from fan to fan while he took their phones, and recorded himself singing before handing the phones off to anyone but their rightful owners. The crowd jumped to their feet at the end of the show to applaud what was a fun and original night of covers.
You can see Puddles Pity Party live at his final New York State show on Dec. 16 at the Tarrytown Music Hall, and you can view all of Puddles’ tour dates on his website.

Saratoga Performing Arts Center announced they will again partner with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, renewing an annual residency. “CMS at the Meadows,” hosted at Pitney Meadows Community Farm open-air High Tunnel greenhouse, will present twelve performances in 2022, spanning June, July, and August. The diverse orchestra will take on masterworks by the likes of Beethoven, Mozart, and Dvořák.

“One of the highlights of this past summer’s programming was the glorious confluence of stunning music-making in a magnificent natural setting. Thanks to our partners at The Farm, we are excited to be going back there for the summer 2022 season,” said SPAC President and CEO Elizabeth Sobol.
Led by artistic directors David Finckel and Wu Han, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center will highlight a diverse array of performers and composers. Some CMS guests, like the acclaimed Escher String Quartet, make a welcome return to Saratoga Springs. Others, like German clarinetist Sebastian Manz, Brazilian oboist Hugo Zouza, Taiwanese-American violist Tien-Hsin Cindy Wu, and American hornists David Byrd-Marrow and Kevin Rivard, will appear at SPAC for the first time ever.
A previous performance of CMS at the Meadows holds an open-air crowd mesmerized.
In addition to highlighting both familiar classics and new frontiers, CMS will also continue their intentional efforts to highlight BIPOC music and musicians. A special Juneteenth concert will see acclaimed BIPOC composers Jessie Montgomery, Florence Price, and William Grant Still make their SPAC debuts.
“It will be an exciting summer, and we can’t wait for everyone to hear it,” Finckel and Wu Han shared in a statement.

The WIlliam Deuel Band
The William Deuel Band released their newest LP, Moment in Time, in August 2021. The blues-rock band’s second full-length project, they formed in 2018 in Saratoga Springs and have since made waves worldwide. They’ve found success on Australian radio, as well as in the UK and South Africa. Inspired by a conversation between Deuel and his mother, Moment in Time’s title track is upbeat and energetic with a killer breakdown just before the three-minute mark.
The following song, “Call Me Crazy,” is much more acoustic and scaled-back, at least until the halfway point. Deuel’s vocals gradually become more raw and passionate, culminating in a grand finale.
Dustin Sawyer
One of two new songs from Americana artist Dustin Sawyer, “Take Me Away” premiered in October. In its music video, the Mayfield singer and songwriter wanders through the wilderness as gnomes and other fantastical elements appear. The song is addressed to God, with Sawyer opening it saying “Father, forgive me ‘cause I know what I’d do / Given that opportunity to walk a mile inside your shoes.” It also references the forty days and nights the Israelites wandered to find the Promised Land.
Hailing from the Collar City of Troy, pop-punk band Playoffs have released “Lickety Splitz,” the first single off their upcoming debut album, due out on December 20, 2021.
Formed out of a cover band that ran face first into the year 2020, Playoffs band members Cody Sargood (guitar/vocals), Alex Foster (vocals), Daniel Livermore (drummer) Bill Milhizer (keys/guitar) and Neal Makela (bass) found themselves like many of us, stuck inside and only able to create their sound from virtual messaging.
With all their powers combined, Playoffs was able to come to the table to record their first self titled album with producer Neil Schneider. While navigating the worst year and strangest times, Playoffs became more than just an idea, they became a goal. Schneider also served as producer, engineer, mix/masterer, and collaborator on the album, drawing on a relationship he has had with Cody since grade school.
Like many songs on the upcoming Playoffs LP, “Lickety Splitz,” released on November 22, draws from from the inner perspective of someone’s mental health. The song tells of relationship troubles by addressing self-struggle and the outward projection of those struggles. Mental health issues can suffocate and ravage an individual’s mind, like a troubled relationship that cannot get out of its own way. “Lickety Splitz” became a typical relationship song, but to deal with and address mental health issues that plague so many individuals today. Playoffs hope that people can connect with the song and realize that no mental health issue is too big or small to ask for help, and that there are people in your life that love you and will help you.
I think each one of us — whether a father, expecting father, newlywed, or just human — had an eye-to-eye mindframe. We were all able to see how awful things were for everyone. This project allowed Cody and myself to write what we were feeling while embracing the style of music we already liked playing. Everyone kind of got it. It worked, and everything came together. Whether it was writing the lyrics one-on-one at someone’s house, or going through the recording process, we maintained communication with one another and having that outlet for ourselves is truly beneficial and hopefully transfers to the people who listen to it.
Alex Foster
Prior to forming Playoffs, the band members were involved in a pop punk/hip hop/90s musical jukebox cover band performing at bars under the name kidbilly. Playoffs started just before the world shut down from COVID, but with the uncomfortable and disconnected feeling that grew from having to sit home and see no one and do nothing, the group recorded the album in pieces and parts, some even from across the country with the help of Makela.
Being able to meet online, play music virtually, embrace the hardship that literally the entire world was facing, and turn it into a reflective piece of art was an amazing experience for the group, especially as they are able to highlight mental health amid the frightening state of affairs of 2020 and having to watch the world slow to a crawl.
Singer and songwriter Thom Powers, from Greenwich, NY where he’s been living and playing locally for about nine years now, has released his first single called “Roller Coaster Show.” It’s a rock and roll tune with clear Beatles influences. Powers recruited top musicians in the area to join him on this track including: Darryl Kniffen (drums, producer, mixer), Andy Mollica (lead guitar and bass) from jazz trio Tanager, and Tony Califano (keys) from Rusticator.
Powers grew up in rural Sherrill, NY, listening to his father strum and sing throughout his childhood. He continued to have a love for music and guitar throughout his early 20’s but didn’t explore the playing out scene until 2012. He started playing at Argyle Brewing Company at Greenwich and quickly branched out to other local venues, collaborating with exceptional musicians in the area – all of whom studied music and are multi-instrumentalists.
“Roller Coaster Show” will be the first song on Powers’ forthcoming album. It’s a catchy tune with a solid drum track that keeps you grooving in combination with the wonderful addition of Tony Califano’s Wurlitzer and Organ and Andy Mollica’s well-timed guitar licks throughout.
There are no set gigs as a 5-piece at the moment, but Argyle Brewing Company and Unihog will be on the schedule in 2022. The trio will have a few more gigs and Thom Powers will continue to play solo at The Inn at Saratoga, Bound by Fate Brewing on New Year’s Eve and Cloud 9 Coffee Lounge on New Year’s Day, amongst others. You can even catch him at the Saratoga Farmer’s Market on January 15.
You can check out the brand new single below and on Bandcamp.
The Empire State Youth Orchestra (ESYO), known regionally and nationally for engaging young musicians from Upstate New York and western Massachusetts in the joyful pursuit of musical excellence, has announced its 2021 Holiday Spectacular, Sleigh Ride, with special guest Madison Vandenburg.
The family-friendly holiday concert is scheduled for Sunday, December 19, at 3pm at Proctors in Schenectady, featuring a sleigh full of talent, including ESYO’s flagship ensemble Symphony Orchestra. They will be conducted by former ESYO Music Director Helen Cha-Pyo, the newly formed ESYO Chamber Orchestra, and the ESYO Youth Jazz Orchestra. Joining ESYO for this one night only performance is 2019 American Idol finalist Madison VanDenburg, who returns home for the holidays to premiere the orchestral version of her new single, “The Light of Christmas.”
The concert program weaves together a seasonal story by Children’s Moonbeam Book award-winning author Vicki Addesso Dodd with sparkling holiday favorites, Christmas carols, and inspired Symphonic classics.. After finding themselves aboard Santa’s sleigh, audiences travel the world seeing the holidays through the eyes of a child and the sounds of music.
Accompanying each scene is music like Leroy Anderson’s iconic Christmas jingle “Sleigh Ride,” Waldteufel’s “Skaters Waltz,” “Troika” by Prokofiev, and a jazzy arrangement of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” Also featured on the program is the famed holiday classic “(There is No Place Like) Home for the Holidays” by Glenville-native Robert Allen. Exhausted from their sleigh ride, the children fall asleep and wake up on Christmas morning to hear the orchestral premiere of Madison VanDenburg’s new hit single. In the finale, the audience is invited to join VanDenburg for a traditional carol sing-along.
Music is the best accompaniment to the holidays. The pandemic has challenged us all and kept many from seeing their families during the holiday season. We believe that our musicians and our community could use a magical sleigh ride and sparkling music to reignite the light and love of the holidays.
Rebecca Calos, Empire State Youth Orchestra’s Executive Director
Written by multi-platinum songwriters Kenny Lamb (NSYNC, Justin Timberlake, Rhett Akins) and Anthony Little (Tina Turner, Backstreet Boys, and Reba), VanDenburg immediately connected with the song. “It’s not just a Christmas song. It is also about hope and togetherness and seeing the world from a place of love,” said VanDenburg. ”Music has always been a powerful way of helping people through tough times, and after the last year and a half, I think we all need to be reminded of the light that Christmas brings and that there will be good times ahead.”
After performing at the Schenectady Tree Lighting and Holiday Parade, Madison VanDenburg will tour the U.S. with her holiday hit before returning home to unwrap a new orchestral arrangement with her hometown youth orchestra and illuminate Downtown Schenectady. With support from local recording engineer Dan Czernicki at Classical Recording Service, videographer Griffin Bengraff, and LIVE Sound Inc, Sleigh Ride will stream online in ESYO’s Virtual Concert Hall on Christmas Day.
For tickets to Sleigh Ride, An ESYO Holiday Spectacular, call Proctors Box Office at (518) 346-6204 or buy online here for $25 – group rates apply for groups of 10 or more. This concert is made possible through a grant from Schenectady County Legislature’s County Initiative Program.

Legendary rock groups Dispatch and O.A.R. will share the stage together in summer 2022, with a 37 date tour announced this past week. The two groups will make their way through New York in August 2022, with shows in Saratoga Springs (SPAC), Lewiston (Artpark) and Long Island (Jones Beach). The tour kicks off in June, and will find the two groups joined by special guests Robert Randolph Band (July 15-August 10) and G. Love (August 12-September 10).
Dispatch and O.A.R. each got their start in the mid-90s as indie rock groups with a jam/roots vibe, performing on the same lineups, occasionally mistaken for each other and after 25 years, finally collaborating together.
For the first three or four years of our career, we’d often see each other kind of weaving in and out of each other’s storylines. Then we didn’t see each other for a long time but there was always this idea that we eventually would get together. I think it was just a matter of everyone figuring out how their own individual lives fit with the band, and so the planets just kind of aligned.
Tickets for the tour will be on sale at Noon on December 6, with public on-sale starting December 10 at Noon. For tickets or more information, click here.
