Max Creek and The Mallett Brothers Band Arrive in Lake George this Summer

On Saturday, June 12th, Charles R. Wood Festival Commons in Lake George will host an evening of music featuring Max Creek and special guests The Mallett Brothers Band.

Max Creek celebrates its 50th anniversary this summer. In those rare instances that a band reaches its fifth decade, it’s usually a result of stardom. It’s easy enough to keep things together when each member has a jet and techs on retainer and the world tour rolls around every few years. But that’s not how Max Creek has done it.

In 50 years Max Creek has been small, big, regionally-huge, medium, and any other size one can think of; they’ve never graced the cover of Rolling Stone, but you’d be hard pressed to find a music fan in the Northeast that hadn’t heard of them.

The Mallett Brothers Band are an independent rock band from Maine. With a busy tour schedule since forming in 2009, the groups has built a dedicated fanbase across the U.S. and beyond while still calling the state of Maine their home. With a style that ranges from alt-country to Americana, country, jam and roots rock, theirs is a musical melting pot that’s influenced equally by the singer/songwriter tradition as by harder rock, classic country and psychedelic sounds.

The Festival Commons at Charles R. Wood Park is located at the southern end of historic Lake George. With panoramic views of “The Queen of American Lakes,” event-goers can also take advantage of all that Lake George has to offer in terms of activities and sight-seeing, all within a very short walk from the grounds.

Tickets for Max Creek and The Mallett Brother Band in Lake George are on sale now and are sold in the pod format with a sectioned off area for each group.

Pod prices range from $175 – $225 based on location and are good for up to five people. Everyone sharing a pod must arrive to the event at the same time. Gates for the show open at 5:30pm, with music starting at 6:30pm.

Preferred Parking is also available for an additional fee. It is located within 300′ of the event gates and includes 30 minutes early admission to the show. All members of a pod must arrive in one vehicle for Preferred Parking.

The Black Crowes “Shake Your Money Maker” Anniversary Tour to make 3 stops in New York

The Black Crowes return this summer with rescheduled dates of their long-awaited Shake Your Money Maker 30th anniversary tour, joined by special guests, Dirty Honey. The Black Crowes long-time bass player Sven Pipien will be returning to the band as well for the tour.

With their hard rock sound, southern influences, and general nontertiary they plan on performing in over 30 cities. The Black Crowes have sold out shows around the world; had legendary guitarist Jimmy Page join as a member; got kicked off a tour with ZZ Top for insulting the sponsors; fought amongst themselves and against the rest of the world. In other words, they’ve done everything a legendary rock group should do.

The Robinson Brothers, Chris and Rich, will front their classic 90s band, making three stop in New York State: September 14 at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, September 17 at Jones Beach, and the tour closer at Bethel Woods PAC on September 25.

Haley Moley

Haley Moley’s newest release, “Narcissus,” is equal parts rock and electronic. Sporting a silver spoon on the single cover, the song’s lyrics speak of a selfish lover. Jennifer Maher Coleman’s vocals fade in and out, acting as another instrument beside the pulsing guitar and synths. Based in Troy, NY, Haley Moley also features Paul Coleman on guitar, Andrea Kosek on keyboard and guitar, Pat Thorpe on bass and Mike Broomhead on drums.

Architrave

Architrave, another project from Jennifer Maher Coleman and Paul Coleman, channels the new wave of the early 80s. The title of their recent single, “Headcount,” is deceiving. Its opening lines say, “There’s safety in numbers, here’s the headcount / One, one, and another one, I’m the only one.” While equally moody as “Narcissus,” Coleman’s vocals take center stage here.

Anacortez

Anacortez harkens back to the alt rock sound of the early 2000s. Consisting of Jessie Comtois, husband Michael Comtois and drummer Kevin Couture, the band is named after a town in Washington. Their latest single, “Another Sad Song,” resides on the softer sound of 00s rock.

Danger! Ken

Lastly, multi-instrumentalist and composer Danger! Ken will be playing “Astral Traveler” off his new release, Up is Down.

Dead and Company 2021 Summer Tour includes 4 stops across NYS

It’s true, the Music Never Stopped, as Dead and Company will head out on the road this summer, their first shows since Playin in the Sand in January 2020. Dead and Company will embark on a 2021 Summer Tour, making four stops in New York State. Citi Field, Bethel Woods, Darien Lake and SPAC will all find multiple generations of Deadheads traversing the state this summer on a mission to get down.

The most recent New York appearance for Dead and Company was their Halloween run at Madison Square Garden in 2019. The Empire State will have an “Easy Wind” blowing across it later this summer, as Dead and Company comes to Citi Field on Friday, August 20, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts on Monday, August 23, Darien Lake Amphitheater on Wednesday, August 25, and Saratoga Performing Arts Center on Friday, August 27.

The Capital Region served as the foundation for Dead and Company’s start with their first performance at Times Union Center in Albany on October 29, 2015. John Mayer and Oteil Burbridge joined the band beyond description for “Playing in the Band” as the first tune to start their journey.

To ensure fans get tickets in their hands directly, Fan Registration is now available here until Sunday, May 16 at 10PM PDT, through Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan program. The Verified Fan Presale begins Wednesday, May 19^th at 10 AM local through Thursday, May 20 at 10 PM local venue time. Supplies are limited.

Jerry Garcia’s words and music get to carry another Summer and Fall Tour across the country. This cast certainly knows how to honor his historic improvisational ability while expressing their own voices on it. They have been given the seal of approval from original crew members and fans a like. Six years later it remains the Dead’s biggest revival. Oteil Burbridge doesn’t feel like a stranger for another tour. “When Bill Walton says you’re good, you quit worrying.”

The Wufs of Hollis, New Hampshire are debuting new music on Sunday, May 9. Their 2020 single, “Naked In Line,” is an earworm thanks to its simple yet arresting guitar riff. More recently, the Wufs released the groovy “Searchlight” last March.

With gravelly vocals and a gritty country feel, the verses to Red Light Rivals’ “There Ain’t Enough Time” sound like an updated Johnny Cash. The chorus and bridge are much poppier, closer to Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors, but Red Light Rivals is able to navigate both territories with ease. Rather than succumbing to whiplash, it showcases their versatility.

“Daycare Dropout” is the first song off the Pine Boys’ EP, Electric Minnow. A quirky rock ballad about a rebellious toddler, it evokes “Another Brick in the Wall” and Frenchy from Grease equally. Where Alice Cooper would protest pencils and books, this song’s protagonist is more concerned with Crayola and naptime. Deceptively simple, repeat listens show the song is more sonically interesting than it has any right to be. The Pine Boys are a trio from Albany, NY, consisting of Andrew Cerone, Brett Maney and Sam Laskey.

Noah XO Presents “No Brakes” Just in Time for a SadBoi Summer

If you’re a fan of pop-trap melodies with hard-hitting production, then “No Breaks” might be your song of the Summer. With pop being one of the most overcrowded, oversaturated genres, it’s easy for artists to be lost in the jumble of three-chord, autotuned melodies. Noah XO is making sure to be an exception, showing up to the game with quick, catchy melodic tunes that are sure to inspire listeners to join along in the chaotic mood swing of a ride that is Noah XO’s music.

“No Brakes is a special song for me, I wrote the chorus within 15 minutes of downloading the beat and the rest was history,” said Noah XO about his new song “No Brakes.”

Hailing from Saratoga Springs, Noah XO (real name Patrick Hayes) came up in the metal and hard rock scene, spending time in three distinct metal bands throughout Upstate New York. Hayes first started making melodic pop trap tunes under the name of Young Cobain, however, he soon changed his stage name to Noah XO to avoid controversy.

“I felt changing my name was the best way to turn a new leaf for me and my career,” says Hayes.

Throughout his musical career, Hayes’ tastes gradually shifted and progressed to a more melancholic pop-driven sound in the vein of crossover artists such as Post Malone and Juice WRLD.

This isn’t to say that Hayes lost his touch for the edge and immersive styles of alternative and metal. While listening to Noah XOs new song, “No Brakes”, you can expect to hear verses sprinkled with metallic undertones and punchy, catchy pop-punk-inspired hooks.

Jocelyn and Chris Take the Big Wins at the 2020 Eddies Music Awards
Jocelyn and Chris took home a pair of big wins at the 2020 Eddies Music Awards as music across the Capital Region was honored at the Thomas Edison Music Awards, more commonly known as the Eddies Music Awards, on May 2, 2021.

The Eddies Music Awards broadcast from Universal Preservation Hall for its second annual awards show and was presented by KeyBank. The awards show was rescheduled twice during the pandemic and was shot on a closed set in UPH’s Great Hall with four musical performances and four panel discussion on how artists, technicians, venue owners and others pivoted during the pandemic. The panels were hosted by WEQX’s Jeff Morad and WEXT’s Andy Gregory.

Jocelyn and Chris ended up sweeping the awards show taking home three big wins in Album of the Year, Video of the Year and Solo / Duo Artist of the Year. Jocelyn and Chris are siblings, who debuted their next single “Sugar and Spice” while performing with a full band during the broadcast. Other notable wins include Record of the Year which went to the Gibson Brothers, who also won Country / Bluegrass Artist of the Year. The other two-time winner was WEXT which won Radio Station of the Year and whose Chris Wienk won Radio DJ of the Year. Awards were announced in a total of 34 categories.

There were three other performances at the awards show. One performance was done by Marty Wendell who is a 2020 Eddies Music Award nominee for Country / Bluegrass Artist of the Year. Another was done by bandleader/ vocalist/ instrumentalist/songwriter Garland Nelson who is a two-time 2019 Eddies Music Awards winner. Schenectady native Promise The Unbreakable™, who was nominated for Hip Hop/Rap Artist of the Year in 2019 and again in 2020, performed as well. Nelson did double-duty as show emcee.

The show, filmed by Chromoscope Pictures of Troy, is available free on demand through Collaborative Studios’ Amazon Fire TV, Roku and Apple TV apps, its public access channels in Albany and Schenectady, and on YouTube and Facebook. Collaborative Studios and the Eddies Music Awards are initiatives of Proctors Collaborative.

The 2021 Eddies Music Awards Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held Thursday, October 28 and the Eddies Music Awards Show on Sunday, November 14. Both events will be staged at Universal Preservation Hall, home of the Eddies Music Hall of Fame.

Marble Eyes Announce Summer Tour Dates

After months of livestream shows, Marble Eyes announce their first series of tour dates, beginning Friday April 30th in Saratoga Springs.

Marble Eyes is a fresh new band that formed during the pandemic, comprised of members from Pink Talking Fish, Kung Fu, The Indobox and more. Using downtime from tour, the band crafted over 40 songs, with a debut album out later this year. Several of these new songs have debuted over the past year during their free “Marble Eyes Mondays” livestreams, every other Monday. You can find these on the nugs.net Youtube page.

The first show kicks off this Friday in Saratoga Springs NY at Putnam Place, followed by the band’s debut in Colorado for 2 nights in Denver at Knew Conscious. They will head back east for some more shows, hitting several states in New England.

In Memoriam: Bassist Tony Markellis

Tony Markellis, a Saratoga Springs resident for more than four decades, and co-founding member of Trey Anastasio Band, has died. Markellis’ death was noted in a Facebook post by his nephew Cory Markellis. The cause of death has not been shared.

Born in Helena, Montana, Tony began playing bass in third grade and never looked back. Living in Saratoga Springs for 45 years, as a bassist, he had a wide range. Over his 47-year career, he played blues, folk, jazz, rock, country and bluegrass with musicians including Anastasio, Paul Butterfield, The Mamas & the Papas, Johnny Shines, David Bromberg, David Amram, Paul Siebel, Rosalie Sorrels, Eric Von Schmidt, Ellen McIlwaine, Mary McCaslin, Railbird, Jo Henley, Russ Lawton, Ray Paczkowski, Jennifer Hartswick, Natalie Cressman, James Casey, and Floodwood.

Tony was a founding member of the groundbreaking Vermont-based jazz fusion group Kilimanjaro, as well as the Unknown Blues Band featuring Big Joe Burrell. At the 2017 Grand Point North Festival, Anastasio revealed that Tony was the reason he eventually decided to go to UVM.

I went into this bar, I had just gotten off the plane, I was 18-years-old. Hunt’s, this used to be a great club and I went in and I saw this band that to this day I would say is my favorite band of all time. I was completely floored by the musicianship and the coolness and that was the moment that I wanted to move to Burlington was when I saw these guys. And of course, that band was Big Joe And The Unknown Blues Band.
Trey Anastasio

Tony was the first member brought on for Trey’s solo project, which began with 8 Foot Flourescent Tubes, evolved into a trio with drummer Russ Lawton, who Tony suggested to Trey, and eventually into a 7-10 piece band over the course of 2001 through today. He was part of Anastasio’s introspective 2019 album and band, Ghosts of the Forest. Markellis would also help develop songs with Anastasio for the Broadway musical, Hands on a Hardbody.

Tony gained fans once again during the Beacon Jams in the Fall of 2020, where his presence, humor and bass playing anchored an incredible run of 8 weeks of musicianship. “You can spatchcock just about anything” went from a backstage comment by Tony to Trey, to an onstage banter and meme among fans.

Tom Mitchell, whose first record was produced by Tony in 1976, said on Facebook, “He was the bass player that made everyone sound better.”

Markellis leaves behind a legacy that includes co-writing Phish staples “Sand,” “First Tube” and “Gotta Jibboo,” the latter of which he would join Phish for at Saratoga Performing Arts Center on June 20, 2010. At the final show of Trey Anastasio Band’s inaugural summer tour on August 5, 2001 at SPAC, Trey held up a sign that said “We’re on Tony Tour,” a photo of which Tony proudly displays on his website.

More recently, Markellis published a book of short stories, titled Life…Real & Imagined, published by Vermont’s Shires Press. He very recently contributed to Marcus Rezak’s album Truth in Sound, released on April 30, 2021, on Color Red Music.

Trey Anastasio shared his thoughts on his friends and bandmate on social media.

Tony Markellis passed away yesterday. He was a truly remarkable human being. He was kind and had a sweetness to his personality, and he was the baddest bass player I’ve ever heard. I loved Tony, and I always will. I’m having a hard time processing this. Tony was the heartbeat to so much of my life, and to the lives of so many others. He played bass for my first dance with Sue at our wedding. We wrote First Tube and Sand together, and played so many years, so many memories.
I was very lucky to have had a very long phone conversation with Tony only a few days ago. We talked for almost two hours. We caught up on family, friends, and funny pandemic thoughts. It wasn’t often that we talked on the phone like that. I had no idea it would be our last conversation. Now it feels like it happened for a reason.
I’m so grateful today for those hours, and for all of the years together.

The Second Eddies Awards Airs on May 2

After being postponed twice, the second annual Eddies Awards is airing on Sunday May 2, highlighting the way members of the music industry adapted to the challenges the pandemic caused.

Founded in 2019, The Eddies Awards, empowers, honors and celebrates musicians from the Capital Region. Originally, it was supposed to air in April 2020 but was rescheduled to December 2020 because of the pandemic. It was rescheduled again because of a rise in infection rates. This third attempt at broadcasting the second annual show is finally coming to fruition.

The Eddies is going to air from the Universal Preservation Hall in Saratoga with 45 cast and crew members. The agenda consists of four performances and four panels discussing local music and the transitions artists, technicians, venue owners and more faced during the pandemic. Each panel will discuss different topics to express various challenges that were experienced during this time. Approximately 100 local music professionals judged the nominees of 34 award categories and the winners will be announced between segments. NYS Music is proud to be nominated for Best Arts Publication.

Jeff Morad from WEQX and Andy Gregory from WEXT are hosting. The lineup consists of performances from nominees of the 2019 and 2020 awards. First there is Marty Wendell, who was nominated for the 2020 Country/Bluegrass Artist of the Year. Blues/Rock artists Jocelyn and Chris are performing and lead with four 2020 nominations. Garland Nelson, instrumentalist and singer-songwriter, won two Eddies Music Awards in 2019 is performing and will be the emcee. Finally, Hip Hop/Rap Artist of the Year nominee in 2019, Promise the Unbreakable™, is hitting the stage as well.

This year the Eddies is going to be filmed by Chromoscope Pictures based in Troy. Collaborative Studios’ will broadcast from their Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV apps, public access channels in Albany and Schenectady and Youtube and Facebook on May 2 at 7 p.m.
