  • Larkin Poe to Headline Monster Energy Outbreak Tour, Dates in Tarrytown, Albany and Buffalo

    Larkin Poe, the Grammy nominated sister duo of Atlanta-bred, Nashville-based singer/songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Rebecca and Megan Lovell, will be hitting the road with the Monster Energy Outbreak Tour this Fall. They’ll bring their brand of gritty, raw, and in your face rock n roll on a 27-date cross-country tour that kicks off on September 15 in St. Louis and will continue through the fall and winter.

    Rebecca & Megan of Larkin Poe create their own brand of Roots Rock ‘n’ Roll that is gritty, soulful, and flavored by their southern heritage. Originally from Atlanta and currently living in Nashville, they are descendants of tortured artist and creative genius Edgar Allan Poe.

    With all of the music for the band’s 2020 release Self Made Man originally written with live performance in mind, Larkin Poe is truly excited to finally let the songs breathe.

    We can’t wait to get back on stage with the Monster Energy Outbreak Tour this fall for the first time since our album, Self Made Man, came out! It’s going to feel so good to be back in front of people celebrating live music again!

    For their newest release, out September 17th, Larkin Poe partnered with innovative hybrid orchestra Nu Deco Ensemble for Paint the Roses: Live in Concert— a new album that reinterprets Larkin Poe’s music, including their 2020 release Self Made Man and more, through an orchestral lens. Paint the Roses documents a collaborative, livestreamed concert by the two artistic groups in December 2020 at Miami’s North Beach Bandshell. The performance was part of Nu Deco’s 2020-21 virtual and socially-distanced concert season, which featured the ensemble’s genre-bending orchestral music and its powerful first collaboration with Larkin Poe.

    In addition to the Monster Energy Outbreak Tour, Larkin Poe has announced several festival dates they are expected to perform at throughout the late summer and fall including BeachLife Festival, San Diego Blues Fest, Telluride Blues & Brews, Treefort, Columbia Roots N Blues, Shaky Knees, Fort Worth River & Blues, Lancaster Roots & Blues and more. The duo will also be supporting JJ Grey & Mofro for one performance in Salt Lake City this September.

  • Wild Adriatic Go Underground for Dynamic Capital Concert Finale

    Capping off the Summer with a “wild” performance, the 2021 Capital Concert series came to a bittersweet close Wednesday night in Albany, with the final event at the Empire State Plaza headlined by Saratoga Springs’ hopefuls Wild Adriatic and Troy mainstays Super 400.

    The free event presented by SEFCU was initially scheduled to be outdoors, but with lingering precipitation from Hurricane Ida, organizers made the early call to move inside and underground to the underutilized Convention Center. 

    Holding nothing back on this night, Wild Adriatic [Travis Gray(guitar), Rich Derbyshire (bass) and Mateo Vosganian (drums)] expanded from trio to five-piece for this special performance, enlisting keyboard player Dusty DeLuke and Let’s Be Leonard saxophone player Connor Dunn to help fill out their sound.   The additions paid dividends early as the band opened with some of their oldest material, a one-two punch of “Letter” and the always upbeat “Mess Around.”

    From there the band slipped into the opening track off their 2019 Our Time EP, “Hard Living.”  Now firing on all cylinders, it felt like the boys put a little extra stink on a riff-rockin ‘Same As It Ever Was>Mistreated” jam sandwich, which at one point included a bit of call-and-response interplay between Gray and the audience.   

    Not done with sandwiches and segues just yet, Wild Adriatic would also uncork Tight Grip >Duende >Tight Grip and then finish up the set with an impressive triple decker treat that went from ” 40 Days, 40 Nights” to “Appleton” to a surprising cover of the Phish song “Carini,” one of the headiest type-II vehicles in their catalogue.

    The band would eventually find their way back to “Appleton” to close out the set.  After taking a bow and walking off stage, there seemed to be some confusion if they’d be back for an encore.  After a few minutes of wonder, a buzz started growing when people collectively realized the stagehands were actually adding instruments to the stage, not breaking it down.  When Wild Adriatic finally emerged from the shadows,  they weren’t alone. 

    Now joined by their friends from Super 400, the stage was set for a super-jam scenario.  Much to the delight of those who stuck around, fans were treated to a memorable three-song encore of classic covers; “Cissy Strut” by The Meters, “Loving Cup” from the Rolling Stones and finally, the show concluded with reggaed-out version of “I Shot the Sheriff.”

  • Diggin Roots Festival Releases Inaugural Lineup and Schedule for October 8-9

    In a year light on music festivals, the season has been extended into October in Upstate NY. Over October 8-9, Magic Forest Farm in Coeymans Hollow – just 30 minutes south of Albany – will play host to the first annual Diggin Roots Festival.

    Diggin Roots features an amazing lineup of bands, kid friendly activities, food vendors, local craftsman and more. Magic Forest Farm also has multiple hiking and walking trails to explore and animals to meet.

    The great minds behind the Festival, Koryn Shear and Sugar Productions, bring a fantastic lineup over two days, featuring Yam Yam, Wild Adriatic, Baked Shrimp, and many more.

    Diggin Roots came to fruition from Shear’s longtime family friend Joan Mahony and her partner Jason Ball. Mahony’s family has owned the 200 acre property since the 1970s, in an effort to have an escape from their home in Brooklyn. The idea for a music festival came together in the last few years, with Jason building the stage. Jason and Joan brought Koryn to the farm and she fell in love with the space and vision to bring music and people to the venue.

    Shear used her connections in the Albany music scene to find those who would be able to bring her vision to life. Among those was Shane Spillinger of Sugar Productions, and once he saw the property and potential for a late fall event, he was on board. Kirk Lyons of Lyons Den Productions will handle lights and sound at Diggin Roots.

    In its first year, Shear hopes to connect the community to the location, have a successful event and make this the beginning of something that can grow over time, bringing music and people together. Over time, larger acts are on the horizon, making this an annual gathering with long term potential, especially given the location of the space in Coeymans Hollow, which has its own deep history.

    The name for the festival came as Shear and Spillinger discussed names along with Joan, the property owner. Given the festival is slated for October, and there is a good deal of harvesting at that time, Diggin Roots was decided upon, especially as they aim to dig in and make this a regular community event.

    Over two fall nights in October, live music lovers will capture the last flicker of festival season with Diggin Roots, which also has camping and limited RV passes. Tickets are available here and are $90 for the weekend. Day passes will also be available.   • PearlPalooza Returns To Downtown Albany On September 18

    This year’s PearlPalooza is in person once again. Presented by SEFCU, the downtown Albany festival will enjoy its 12th year on Saturday, September 18. The all-star lineup includes Slothrust, Jocelyn & Chris, Glass Pony and Timbre Coup, with a streetwide mass yoga event presented by MVP Health Care. Like its virtual rendition last year, PearlPalooza is free to attend.

    PearlPalooza kicks off with MVP Health Care’s YogaPalooza event at 12:00 PM, which requires pre-registration on the Hot Yoga Spot’s website. Be sure to bring a mat, water and mask. After that, Timbre Coupe takes the stage at 1:00 PM, with Glass Pony at 2:15 PM and Jocelyn & Chris at 3:30 PM. Headliner Slothrust closes out the festival from 4:45 to 6:00 PM.

    Three of the lineup’s four bands have Albany ties: Jocelyn & Chris, Glass Pony and Timbre Coupe. Jocelyn & Chris are a blues-rock sibling duo who have made their long-awaited return to touring after taking 2020 off for obvious reasons. They’ve already played in 16 states, and have performed with Foreigner and Grand Funk Railroad.

    Pearlpalooza is going to be amazing this year. We’re so honored to be on the bill! It’s our first hometown show since the summer of 2019, and we can’t wait for it. We’ve been playing all over the country this summer, but there’s nothing like a homecoming!

    All performances will be on the Remarkable Liquids Stage at North Pearl Street and Sheridan Avenue, with $5 event parking available at ParkAlbany’s Riverfront Garage and Quackenbush Garage.   • In Focus: Lindsey Stirling at SPAC

    On August 16, 2021, Lindsey Stirling graced Saratoga Performing Arts Center with an incredible performance. From daredevil aerial spinning to intricate choreography, her show is one for the ages. Sterling said during her set that she always imagined herself becoming what she is today, a badass playing violin and dancing to dubstep, wearing the most fantastical costumes.

    Lindsey’s Artemis Tour, named after her latest album release, is just as outrageously out of this world as any of her work. Every few songs a video would come up on the massive LED screen behind her playing a fable of sorts, usually incredibly strong and uplifting, inner beauty and strength being a key point in all her messages. She dives deep into each genre of… well, everything she gets into. Her music ranges from heavy dubstep to classical and back to pop, and her stage performances always have incredible themes.

    Artemis is very much an album based in ancient fantasy. The videos between songs showed Lindsey Stirling in full costume in the middle of the woods, bow in hand, among her clan of pre/post-apocalyptic hunters. As she dove into her other albums, her costumes and themes changed with them. A Choose Your Own Pirate Adventure got the crowd cheering as the fair maiden and her crew acted out insanely hilarious and amazing choreography.

    The Artemis Tour takes Lindsey out west for a handful of shows before a five-month hiatus. In late February 2022, she begins her World Tour of the same name beginning in Sydney, Australia and ending in Kiev, Ukraine.

  • Donny Skipper Releases New Single “She Farts Just Like Her Daddy”

    Independent comedy musician Donny Skipper has released a new single and music video for “She Farts Just Like Her Daddy.” With two albums already streaming and a third in the works, Skipper has been putting in the work. This latest track is based on the recent arrival of his baby, a daughter named Donna Skipper who farts so much he had to write her this song.

    Originally born and raised in Saskatchewan, Canada, Skipper moved to Syracuse about 10 years ago where he was a delivery driver at Syracuse University. He later moved to Cohoes to pursue his career as a musician and TikTok star. That leads to now where he has released his latest song “She Farts Just Like Her Daddy”.

    The music video was to accompany the song was made with Skipper’s neighbor Montrese as the star. It was filmed at random farms in Halfmoon and the crew were asked to leave a few properties by angry farmers but regardless of that fact they still got everything needed. The video is directed and edited by Donny Skipper himself. 

    The lead up to this release was accompanied by a series of videos posted on TikTok involving a high end baby crib called the Snoo. In the skit like videos, Donny Skipper tells the story of a fussy baby only put to sleep by the Snoo. Except after only a little while with peaceful sleep, the crib was stolen while he was away from the apartment. In the resolution of the conflict it is revealed that Montrese, Skipper’s neighbor, had stolen the crib in order to gain the starring role in the “She Farts Just Like Her Daddy” music video.

  • In Focus: Capital Region Artist Freedom Stratton Sets The Stage For Ginuwine Performance at Empire State Plaza

    Wednesday, August 4 kicked off the Capital Concert Series at the Empire State Plaza in Albany and it did not disappoint with headlining act 90s favorite R&B singer, Ginuwine and opening act Freedom Stratton.

    Gracing the Albany stage for the first time in 25 years, Ginuwine kept the crowd dancing and smiling with hits like “In Those Jeans” and “Pony.” While a large crowd was drawn to the Plaza with the chance to see an old school performance on a warm summer night, they had the perfect warm-up in the form of an opening act that came across as an artist with years in the business.

    Setting off the night of dancing was a young local artist Freedom Stratton. Popping onto the stage with an energy that reached beyond his stature, his vocals and movements took up the massive staging area. Slated to do two 10-minute sets, Stratton focused on his newly released singles. During the first set, listeners got to hear Stratton’s singles ‘Ray Banz’ and ‘Prophecy’, which gave them a taste of Stratton’s clever lyrical power.

    Born and raised in Albany, Freedom Stratton very recently celebrated his 21st birthday only days before the performance but is no stranger to the struggle and beauty of making music in the 518. At an early age, Stratton fell in love with musical theater, which led to his participation in high school plays, studying modern dance at Berkshire Ballet, and also a slew of performances in community productions across the Capital Region.

    During the second set, he got the crowd dancing to more r&b/pop inspired singles ‘Tell Me What You Need’ and ‘New Things’. The audience bounced and grooved along all the way until Ginuwine took the stage. After Stratton’s second performance NYS Music had a chance to sit down with the budding artist.

    NYS Music: What started your career in music?

    Freedom: About three years ago I started working with BChaps. Then I had this idea to get a bunch of artists together for an album called “The Future” and it broke over 400,000 streams in less than a year. Then I knew.

    NYS Music: What sets you apart from other artists?

    Freedom: The drive. The drive to know that nothing is going to happen without you doing something to make it happen.

    NYS Music: Do you have a dream collaborator and why? 

    Freedom: Anderson Paak. Oooh. He’s spicy. He’s spicy right there. I feel like that’s one of the most influential people to me in the music industry. It’s like that newer version of the old school.

    NYS Music: Do you have any music that you often listen to these days? And who are the musicians that inspired you?

    Freedom: Jason Derulo, gotta throw him in there. Ariana Grande. Justin Bieber, I ain’t gonna lie. I really mess with pop, like Dua Lipa. It’s the kind of music that I’m pushing for. More mainstream but at the same time they can make a heartbreak song, or a happy song, or a love song. I just love the diversity pop brings.

    NYS Music: How would you like to see music help the community? 

    Freedom: Bringing people back together, you feel me? People are literally scared to be around each other. Music can bring us back together.

    Things shifted in 2018 though once it became clear to Stratton that pop stardom would achieve his goal of leaving “a legacy. Something that will carry on forever and be able to touch people for generations”. Stratton began working with local music producer, Brian Chiappinelli(B.Chaps) to capture music that makes people happy. All the hard work has already begun to pay off. Just last year Stratton released his first full-length studio album dubbed “The Future”. With a loaded roster of other 518 artists, Stratton pushed himself out of his typical style comfort zone. Not only did the success of the album cause him to release a deluxe version that included a whopping thirty songs but “The Future” was also picked up for distribution by record label Rexius Records in Sweden.

    Already back in the studio, Stratton has 2 singles set to be released this month. ‘First Love’ with Kortnee Simmons is dropping on Empire Media on August 13 and ‘For The Summer’ with B. Chaps and Money Montage is dropping on Foundation Media on August 20.

  • Lecco Morris and Friends Announce Live Premiere of “We The Nighthawks”

    Schenectady native and artistic producer Lecco Morris along with fellow New Yorkers, singer Kimberly Hawkey and lyricist Justin K. Rivers, have announced the live premiere of their thirteen-track album We the Nighthawks. Occurring on August 17 at The Linda in Albany at 8 p.m., the audience will be treated to performances that pull many genres including art song, jazz, musical theatre, and America.

    Released earlier this year in May, the album captures within Hawkey’s crystalline and sometimes haunting voice what makes us all human – “life, love, and loss”. Recorded at Dreamland Studios in upstate New York with an impressive full orchestra of twenty musicians, the album has a solid foundation behind it. Despite covid putting the album on a brief hold, each musician showed up on recording day after receiving the required negative COVID test to enter the studio. Bringing a plethora of experience to the team is Grammy-nominated Assaf Gleizner as musical director, and seven-time Grammy-winning producer, Joel Moss. Moss’s impressive client list includes the late Ray Charles, Stephen Sondheim, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tony Bennett, Johnny Cash, and many more during a career in the music industry that has spanned over fifty years.

    Moss was at first skeptical about undertaking the indie record at first saying, “My first listening of these Morris/Rivers compositions was a simple piano/vocal recording.  The fact that its simplicity featured the brilliant playing of Assaf Gleizner and the angelic voice of Kimberly Hawkey was not wasted on my ready-to-be-unexcited ears. I was immediately captivated, and rather than quickly scanning, tune to tune, I listened intently, top to bottom…twice.”  

    While We the Nighthawks might be Morris’s first full-length studio album that he composed, it is only a small fraction of musical experience this pianist has under his belt. Growing up in western New York, Morris was “born in the theater” due to his father Philip Morris’s positions at the Arts Council for Chautauqua County and The Reg Lenna Center for the Arts in Jamestown. While Morris did not participate in the theater directly, it was the springboard for future artistic endeavors. Since the tender age of 3, Lecco Morris has been perfecting his piano skills before turning to create music in his early teens.

    During Morris’s senior year is when his music career took off. While entering his senior year of high school, Morris was given special permission to attend college-level classes at SUNY Schenectady School of Music. The stellar programming prepared Morris for a heavy curriculum that he later took renowned NYU Steinhardt where he obtained his degree in Music Theory and Composition. Morris also credits SUNY Schenectady School of Music for the ability to overcome the creative challenges faced trying to compose an album during the midst of a pandemic.

    “The program’s music fundamentals – particularly theory and aural skills – were so thorough that I tested out of an entire year and a half of required credits at NYU’s music theory and composition program, affording me space in my schedule to explore more advanced musical coursework.”

    Morris has since participated in many different art forms including acting, improv poetry, touring theater pieces but never straying far from his love for music. Fans can stay tuned for more stunning creative alchemy from Morris, Rivers, and Hawkey for their upcoming holiday album “A New Noel”, set to be released November this year, and a sophomore studio album.

  • The Egg Adds Kaki King and Milk Carton Kids to 2021-22 Concert Series

    Finally, nearly a year and a half after the theatres closed due to COVID-19, The Egg is ready to reopen in August for a new extraordinary season of music, dance, and family performances. Performances were recently added to The Egg’s 2021-22 concert series including Kaki King on September 18, The Milk Carton Kids on September 24, and Bruce Cockburn on February 25.

    Saturday, February 5 at 11 AM – The Very Hungry Caterpillar & Other Eric Carle Favorites by Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia

    Three beloved stories by Eric Carle, award-winning children’s book illustrator and author, are retold on stage through the magic of black light and fanciful puppets by Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia. The Very Hungry Caterpillar follows the wonderful adventures of a caterpillar as he eats his way through an amazing variety of foods on his path to becoming a beautiful butterfly. Little Cloud playfully transforms himself into various creatures, including a sheep, and an airplane, a shark and more. The Mixed-Up Chameleon takes an adventurous trip to the zoo, where he attempts to emulate the beautiful animals he sees before coming to the conclusion that there is value in his own unique self.

    Friday, February 25 at 7:30 PM – Bruce Cockburn 

    Bruce Cockburn’s music explores urban, political, and social issues in a poetically and rhythmically unique style that has produced classic songs such as “Wonderin’ Where the Lions Are”, “Lovers in a Dangerous Time” and “If I Had A Rocket Launcher.” Bruce performs his prized songbook solo and acoustic. Tickets for the show range from $39.50 to $49.50.

  • Sammy Rae Brings All The Friends To Lark Hall

    There was one overall concensus from Sunday’s show at Lark Hall on August 1st, and that is Sammy Rae is going to be big. The energy that this young woman brings to the stage is really unmatched at her level. Sammy’s voice and the band’s energetic soul would have been given a warm welcome at the Copacabana in the 50’s.

    Lark Hall played host to one of its biggest crowds to date as hungry fans filled the great hall. Sammy Rae had them roaring on their feet from before she even came on stage and with every note and gesture they sang her praises. The band itself was exceptionally tight with a pair of backup singers who were actually front and center, and a duo of saxophones with a full band behind them. Sammy moved around the stage like a conductor, feeding off of the crowd and the band.

    If you missed out then fret not as they have an extensive tour ahead of them and this was only show number three. After finishing up their summer tour and festival season at Green River Festival in Greenfield, MA, the band moves it’s way to a few shows in the southeast and then a massive run in the Northeast including stops in Brooklyn and Syracuse. Keep this young lady on your radar, because she is coming in hot.
