  • Don McLean Announces “American Pie” 50th Anniversary Tour, Adds shows at The Egg, Town Hall with North American Dates

    Don McLean is set to embark on his 2022 50th Anniversary Tour celebrating “American Pie,” with 20 additional cities throughout the United States and Canada. A Grammy award honoree, Songwriters Hall of Fame member, and BBC Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, McLean will entertain fans across America throughout nearly 30 cities from Honolulu to Toronto and everything in between, including stops in Albany at The Egg, and Town Hall in Manhattan.

    As tragic as the backstory behind the song “American Pie” is with the much too early death of the new rock’n’roll-hope Buddy Holly, the track is also magnificent and legendary. “American Pie” still goes to heart as soon as originator Don McLean plays this classic at his concerts. But the 76-year-old McLean has numerous other hits, including “Vincent (Starry Starry Night),” “Castles in the Air,” “And I Love You So,” and “Cryin’,” all of which will be heard and reveled in along with newer pieces on the upcoming tour.

    After spending the past 18 months at home, I am thrilled to be getting back on the road with my band. 2022 marks the 50th anniversary from when American Pie landed at the #1 spot on the Billboard chart and we will be celebrating on tour all year long. We will be performing all the songs from the American Pie album plus many of the other hits that fans will be expecting to hear.

    The eight-and-a-half-minute ballad “American Pie” has been making history since its release in 1971, leading to the song being voted “Song of the 20th Century,” alongside songs by Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Woody Guthrie, and Aretha Franklin. The handwritten lyrics to the song were auctioned off for more than $1.2 million in 2015, and the composition was added to the Library Of Congress National Recording Registry two years later.

    Over the years, the song has been covered again and again by music icons like Madonna and Garth Brooks. Rapper Drake repeatedly sampled McLean tunes and hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur also cited him as an important influence.

    In 2018, Don McLean released his 19th studio album, Botanical Gardens, which received rave reviews. Songs from it subsequently proved themselves in a live setting may find their way into the setlist next year, alongside “American Pie” and many others.   • NY Dates Bookend the Unfortunate Return of “Weird Al” Yankovic’s Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour

    Almost four years after his first foray into unfamiliar concert territory with his highly-acclaimed Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour, “Weird Al” Yankovic will return to the road for an extensive cross-country tour, kicking off with two dates in New York.

    Starting April 23 at Bardavon in Poughkeepsie, and heading through Albany the next night at The Egg, “Weird Al” will perform 131 shows over the next six months, with the final show in New York City at Carnegie Hall on October 29.

    The tour marks Weird Al’s long-anticipated return to the concert stage after his hugely successful Strings Attached Tour in 2019 where he performed each night alongside a full symphony orchestra at world-renowned venues such as New York’s Forest Hills Stadium, Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Washington D.C.’s Wolf Trap.  

    Once again drawing from his back catalogue of 14 studio albums, Weird Al promises to deliver a different setlist every night, with no two shows the same.  As before, rather than focusing on the hits from his career, the show will feature Yankovic’s non-parody material – the somewhat more obscure pastiches and original songs that have largely escaped the pop culture radar but are adored by his long-time fans. 

    Like the last Vanity Tour, “Weird Al” will be playing smaller, more intimate venues, leaving behind the high-octane theatrics that he’s known for and going bare-bones – no costumes, no props, no video screens… just Al and his band of almost four decades hanging out on stage, playing music.

    Reflecting on his decision to bring back the stripped-down concerts, Al said:

    I’ve loved doing every single incarnation of my live show, but honestly the Vanity tour is the most fun I’ve ever had on stage… so I’ve been dying to get back out there and torture everybody with it once again!

    Opening the show each night will be returning fan favorite and Al’s long-time friend (and UHF cast member), the legendary comedian Emo Philips.

    “Weird Al” Yankovic first found fame via the Dr. Demento radio show in the late 1970s, before launching a career that would lead to 14 albums, creative and hilarious music videos, and built a following of fans across the globe.

  • Premiere: sautereau gets Nostalgic with Emotional “Conversation Hearts”

    Today, New York-based singer-songwriter sautereau, previously known under the name Cee, releases the music video for her single, “Conversation Hearts.” With a glass-half-full perspective even after global struggles this past year, “Conversation Hearts” offers a lighthearted undertone of emotions reminiscent of 90s singers Lisa Loeb and Jewel.

    Born and raised in Geneva, Switzerland, Chloé Sautereau picked up her first guitar at the age of 8 and quickly began writing songs. Starting her career under the name Cee, she released her debut EP As I Keep on Dreaming in 2019 at age 18. Swiss radio featured this early project focusing on human relationships and the small perplexities of life.

    Now based in New York, the singer-songwriter now goes by her surname “sautereau,” creating a truer world for herself. With a bare-face pop sound that blurs the line between reality and what goes on in our heads, she writes intimate songs about her experiences with an authentic sound, showcasing her storytelling forte. With influences such as Finneas, Julia Michaels, and Jessie Reyez, sautereau’s unapologetically honest voice is accompanied by production that is modern and crisp.

    “Conversation Hearts” brings up nostalgic feelings experienced while isolated during the pandemic. The elegant and emotional video shows vignettes of sautereau playing guitar and trying to focus on everyday tasks while falling into the repetition of her daily routine.

    This song is about the bittersweet realization of how fast time slipped by, while also feeling like it suddenly stopped, It’s about the frustration of not being able to do what we should have been able to do, but hopefully still acknowledge the good memories made with the few special people we were lucky to have around.

    Listeners will connect with sautereau’s longing for interaction and wanting to spend time with the world, while dealing with the loneliness we have all experienced this past year. While time seems to blend together, sautereau reminds us that there’s beauty in the little everyday tasks, and spending time with yourself while listening to what your heart wants can be therapeutic. Written by sautereau, the song has elements of bass, synth, and drums, all performed by Toby May, while she plays the guitar.

    I always had a passion for writing from poems to prose. Storytelling was always there, and I think that’s around the time I put those together and fell in love with it.

  • Swedish House Mafia will stop at MetLife Stadium in August, First Tour In 10 Years

    Swedish House Mafia have announced an international tour for 2022, their first in 10 years, making a stop in East Rutherford, NJ on Wednesday, August 3, 2022. Long revered by fans for their bombastic live performances, the band’s previous outing, “One Last Tour,” sold over 1 million tickets. The 2022 jaunt will follow the trio’s just announced performance at Coachella 2022 and includes arenas across the United States and Europe.

    Swedish House Mafia have also teamed with The Weeknd for a new single and video, “Moth to a Flame.” The new song was initially teased during the trio’s landmark performance at the MTV VMAs pre-show this summer, and marks the band’s first new music since announcing their reunion this past July with a pair of new singles “It Gets Better” and “Lifetime (feat. Ty Dolla $ign & 070 Shake)” that arrived alongside a cover story for Billboard Magazine and a special performance of both songs on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.

    The trio of songs continue to build anticipation toward the band’s forthcoming full length Paradise Again, slated for release early next year with a Special Tour Edition CD pre-order available now that unlocks exclusive pre-sale tour tickets.

    Red Hot Chili Peppers have announced their 2022 World Tour including a stop in East Rutherford, New Jersey on October 7, 2021. The tour will start in Seville, Spain on June 4, 2022 and will wrap up in September 18, in Arlington, Texas.

    The tour will include singer Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea and drummer Chad Smith and guitarist John Frusciante, who rejoined the band in 2019 after a 10-year absence. The band made the announcement via a spoof news video featuring Anthony Kiedis, Flea and Chad Smith interviewing Frusciante about the prospect of the tour as news anchors. The tour will include lots of supporting acts including big names like The Strokes, HAIM, A$AP Rocky, and St. Vincent. 

    Red Hot Chili Peppers have been teasing a new album in the works earlier this year with John Frusciante back on guitar. There hasn’t been any more news on this album but with a world tour announcement there is hope it will drop before the start of a tour. 

    The band will stop in East Rutherford at Metlife Stadium on August 17, 2021. The Strokes and Thundercat will be opening this stop of the tour.

  • Watch The Fugees Celebrate 25 years of ‘The Score’ with Pop up Show at Pier 17, Announce 2021 World Tour Dates

    On Wednesday, September 22, The Fugees reunited at Pier 17 in Manhattan, with Lauryn Hill, Pras and Wyclef performing together for the first time in 15 years. The trio was three hours late for their 45 minute performance, but who can complain when a classic 90s hip-hop/reggae group reunited for an intimate performance for lucky fans.     Hip hop supergroup, The Fugees, will be making a return to arenas and stadiums across the world in celebration of their magnum opus, The Score.

    The group – who broke up shortly after the success of 1996’s diamond-certified sophomore effort – will be performing together for the first time since 2006. Their last major reunion tour – following another reunion at Dave Chapelle’s Block Party – ended in disarray as members had to grow accustomed to different dynamics within the group. Such as, Ms. Lauryn Hill’s amplified stardom. The friction led to an abrupt end to the tour as group members traded jabs. 

    In a 2007 interview with Billboard, Pras said:

    But, to put it nicely, it’s dead. Me and [Wyclef Jean], we on the same page, but Lauryn [Hill] is in her zone, and I’m fed up with that s**t. Here she is, blessed with a gift, with the opportunity to rock and give, and she’s running on some bulls**t? I’m a fan of Lauryn’s, but I can’t respect that. 

    Nonetheless, the group’s lasting power within hip hop has left fans clamoring for a return despite the members differences. After releasing their experimental debut, Blunted on Reality, the trio found their groove on, The Score. Recorded in the now-infamous “Booga basement,” the album was curated as an actual film and score all-in-one. Like most feature presentations it provided plenty of social-political commentary while it’s “main characters” got a chance to develop through dialogue laden lyrics and skits. 

    Upon its release, it peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 charts and earned the group two Grammy Awards. Fugees were also the first hip-hop group ever to be nominated for Album Of The Year. It pawned the hit singles “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” “Fu-Gee-La” as well as  “Ready or Not” and instantly turned the Brick city natives into the biggest hip hop act in the world.  It was also the platform on which Hill emerged as the group’s undeniable star, which — along with her deteriorating romantic relationship with Wyclef – served as a divisive seed that set the group on the path to disbandment. 

    And now with the album’s 25th anniversary upon us, the group has decided to commemorate the occasion with another world tour. Presented by Diaspora Calling and produced by Live Nation, the 12-city international tour will kick-off tomorrow, September 22nd with an intimate pop-up show in New York City, at an undisclosed location. The rest of the tour will commence November 2nd at United Center in Chicago and will make stops across the globe in Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, Paris, London, and more, before finishing the tour in Africa, with the final shows taking place in Nigeria and Ghana. 

    The Fugees have a complex but impactful history. I wasn’t even aware the 25th anniversary had arrived until someone brought it to my attention. I decided to honor this significant project, its anniversary, and the fans who appreciated the music by creating a peaceful platform where we could unite, perform the music we loved, and set an example of reconciliation for the world.

  • Angélique Kidjo To Perform ‘Mother Nature: Songs for New York and the World Beyond” At Carnegie Hall

    Angélique Kidjo will return to Carnegie Hall on November 5, headlining the Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage. This special one-night-only presentation is entitled Mother Nature: Songs For New York and the World Beyond. With a setlist focused on Kidjo’s just-released and trenchant new album, Mother Nature, and special guests, the performance will pay timely tribute to resilient New Yorkers and also serve as a rallying cry for the planet.

    The Carnegie Hall performance will be the first full New York City performance for Angélique Kidjo in nearly two years. In March of 2020 she was slated to perform at Carnegie Hall as part of her four-concert Perspectives Series at the legendary venue, but just a day before she was set to take the stage, it was cancelled as the city went into lockdown due to the pandemic.

    Kidjo has had an impressive summer, releasing Mother Nature, her first album of original music in seven years to widespread international praise. The album represents the remarkable influence that Kidjo has had on younger generations of musicians, and features collaborations with a host of budding stars including Burna Boy, Sampa The Great, Yemi Alade, Shungudzo, Ghetto Boy, Earthgang and others. Together they address a host of complex issues, from political upheaval to the destruction of the environment, that in Kidjo’s hands transform into music that is radiantly joyful.  

    This one-of-a kind performance of Mother Nature: Songs For New York and the World Beyond, will feature world renowned artists including Josh Groban, Andra Day, Cyndi Lauper, Philip Glass, EARTHGANG, and Ibrahim Maalouf. The program is a musical rallying cry for our planet, exploring the great importance of human beings to each other and to the natural world.

    Kidjo also represented the continent of Africa during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Opening Ceremony, singing “Imagine” alongside John Legend, Alejandro Sanz and Keith Urban. She will also perform from Paris as part of the 24-hour Global Citizen Festival broadcast event on September 25.

  • Ramiro Marziani: Embracing All Things Music One String At a Time

    Guitarist/composer Ramiro Marziani is taking the NYC music scene by storm using his international style influenced by a love for culture. The Argentinian-born musician has recently released his newest EP, Sep ’20: From a Living Room in Brooklyn, on Friday, August 13.

    Marziani is a young, worldly guitarist based in Brooklyn, New York City. He has previously performed at venues across New York and Europe, from NYC’s Sony Hall, to Le Bal Blomet in Paris and Prague’s Jazz Dock. He has also made appearances at Austin, Texas’ SXSW festival, California WorldFest, and was even featured in a Polynesian string-inspired NPR Tiny Desk Concert with ukulele virtuoso Taimane.

    Music played an important role in Marziani’s life since the beginning. Marziani notes that his family’s influence inspired him to take up guitar, due part from Argentinian musical culture. After gravitating towards the guitar from a young age, he began taking the instrument seriously at 11 years old.

    Marziani’s earliest inspiration was 80’s rock band Asia, after attending a concert of theirs with his father. The revolutionary rockers opened a new door for Marziani to explore endless genres of music, fueling his passion for all forms of musical expression. He enrolled in professional lessons, studying traditional Spanish guitar as well as rock and other genres as he got into his mid-teens.

    When you’re young, you have an aesthetic ferocity to try an instrument. How it sounds, how it looks, what it does. For me, it was the guitar, and the Asia concert made me think “yeah, I’m doing this.”

    His musical training continued into attending Berklee College of Music which sealed his future as a professional guitarist. After graduating from Berklee, Marziani moved to Brooklyn in search of bigger and better things. He uses New York as a headquarters for music production and performance in-between travels while he continues on his journey as a blossoming international artist.

    NYC as a culture capital is very romantic to me, it’s filled with amazing musical talent and has provided me with inspiration that I had not found anywhere else.

    Travel is apart of the magic for Marziani, allowing him to indulge in his love for discovering new forms of music. His style is self-described as “putting together techniques from everywhere” to create something truly unique; the exchange of knowledge and culture seems to make music so enticing for Marziani.

    It’s the fact that I’m not a tourist, and I have immediate access to meeting and learning from the people of any place I visit, the people that come to your shows. This is the biggest prize for a musician like myself.

    Marziani’s professional studies have guided him to an intuitive way of music-making, comparable to an orchestral composer. His process of creating is much less focused on just throwing things out and seeing what sticks. Instead, he takes an intentional approach, focusing in on the conditions behind the creation of an album. This unique approach to musical artistry allows for a freeform fluidity between genres to properly fit the music’s intended role.

    I strive to create an environment of composition with my music that leads into intentional improvisation and collaboration. I want to make things feel purposeful, no matter the genre.

    Marziani released another EP, a meditation music guitar album titled Cielito Blue, in July 2020. Cielito Blue is a short 20-minute album of eight solo guitar songs, written with a service mindset rather than a purely artistic goal. Produced in the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, its purpose is to allow oneself to re-connect with the present, by quieting the mind through meditation, stretching, yoga or daily tasks.

    Marziani’s newest EP, Sep ’20: From A Living Room in Brooklyn marks his return to the sound of high energy rock n’ roll guitar and extended jazz improvisation. The meditative period of Cielito Blue, is greatly juxtaposed by this new project, as Sep ’20 marks a return to normalcy.

    Sep ’20: From a Living Room in Brooklyn, was recorded shortly after Cielito Blue, but was kept on the back burner while Marziani worked on other projects. It represents a fusion of cultures through collaborations with musicians from Brazil, Indonesia and Argentina. Best described as “jazz and American folk with a little rock n’ roll sugar,” be sure to expect some unique yet enchanting guitar rhythms.

    Now is the right time to release Sep ’20, as it marks the moment in time when it was recorded, but allows us to celebrate that things are beginning to open up again.

    Marziani looks to recreate a banjo-like sound through the electric guitar with first track, “Celtic Dreams.” “El Rio,” the second track, is a slower ballad where Argentine folk and country influence become present. The third and final song on the EP is titled “Oliver Oil”, which floats across dreamy Brazilian rhythms.

    Other than creating and traveling, Marziani can be found teaching aspiring musicians of all ages as well as sharing various jam sessions and musical covers on Youtube. From just scrolling down his posts, ranging from Clapton to AC/DC and everything in-between, his musical ambiguity is clear.

  • Arushi Jain Brings a Modern Spin to Indian Classical Music with “Richer Than Blood”


    NYC-based artist Arushi Jain recently shared a new single, “Richer Than Blood.” This release is the first song of her upcoming album, Under the Lilac Sky, out on July 9.

    Arushi Jain is an India-born, Brooklyn-residing composer, modular synthesist, vocalist and engineer. Jain’s work focuses on reinterpreting traditional Indian classical music through the lens of electronic instrumentation.

    Jain spent her childhood studying Hindustani classical music at the Prayag Hindustani Music School and the Ravi Shankar Institute in New Delhi. Being trained in the genre, Jain now aims to make more people aware of the beauty behind Indian ragas by adding self-coded and ad-lib synthesizer sounds – a unique spin.

    “Richer Than Blood” sets the tone of her new album, incorporating Jain’s vocals with deep, textured synth reverberations. Jain uses her voice as a musical tool for a source of texture rather than lyrics. This detail is most recognizable when Jain sings alaps, an improvised section, or sargam, singing with notes instead of words, within the different synth melodies.

    At any given point, there is at least one layer in the record that carries my voice. The human voice is powerful and unique to every individual. My voice is unique to me, so I decided it should be present at all times even if it’s unrecognizable.

    Jain notes that the concept of time and seasonality is essential to Indian classical music. Each raga, or melodic framework for improvisation, has a specific time of day to listen in order to experience the song’s full authenticity.

    At six songs spanning 48 minutes of ambient synth ragas intended to be heard during the sunset hours, Under the Lilac Sky and “Richer Than Blood” invites listeners to transport themselves through intentional listening – “realizing your vision of the moment.”

    You know that moment when the sun is bidding farewell to the sky, and the colors turn into beautiful hues of purple and pink and everything in between? That is the moment that this album will shine the most. The deeper you listen, the more shades you’ll see.

    Jain’s expertise with musical electronics creates an entirely unique art form embedded in historical themes. Her ambient sounds provide a visual landscape for listeners to enjoy, bringing a technological touch to a centuries old tradition.

    This album is the coming together of two distinct cultures of Hindustani classical and modular synthesizers representing the two parts of me that evolved into one whole in between my time in India and California.

  • Caffè Lena Hosting USA Shows for Quebec Jazz Festival

    With live music returning to Capital Region venues, Saratoga’s historic Caffe Lena is in a position to assist a popular jazz festival in a part of the world that is still restricted by COVID-19. With American musicians unable to cross the border for their gigs at Quebec Jazz In June, Caffè Lena will instead be producing the shows at its location in Saratoga and making it available to the Quebec Audience via livestream.

    Quebec Jazz in June, a ten day festival that ushers jazz music to the streets of Quebec City has pivoted to a hybrid online, and in-person model as Canada keeps its southern border closed.

    “This legendary venue has stepped up to ensure that world class American musicians will once again be a part of our annual festivities – this time through the magic of live streaming.” Says Simon Couillard, the Festival’s General Manager.

    Three nights of the festivals headline artists will be live streamed from Caffe Lena to the Festival’s social media platforms. Capital Region audiences can also attend the concerts in-person, in the intimate listening room located in downtown Saratoga Springs.

    “Standing in as Quebec’s USA Stage is a win-win-win. The artists get to play for the festival’s audience; Quebec Jazz can hang onto their American line-up; and Saratoga gets to experience the festival’s mainstage musicians in person,” says Caffe Lena’s Executive Director Sarah Craig.

    The collaboration between Caffe Lena and Quebec Jazz in June is one to look forward to, and is a positive thing as a result of the pandemic. The historic venue has been regularly sharing their stage and live stream capabilities with a number of venues and organizations from around the region, including 2020’s Freihoffer’s Jazz Festival.

    Producing more than 200 shows during 2020, the venue’s audience has expanded far beyond its 110-seat listening room, while providing more than $100,000 in income to musicians who were not able to play live shows in over a year.

    “This event is a perfect example of the growth of the independent music world that happened over the past year. There was pain while it was happening, but the end result–greater access for all–is exciting for artists and audiences. This international collaboration with Quebec Jazz In June is truly exhilarating,” says Craig.

    The American artists performing at Caffe Lena for this series will include Manuel Valera New Cuban Express on Thursday, June 17th, Sheila Jordan on Friday, June 18th, and the Chuck Lamb Trio featuring Chuck Lamb, Jay Anderson and Harvey Sorgen on Sunday, June 20th.

    Grammy-nominated pianist and composer Valera, who has played with Paquito D’Rivera and Arturo Sandoval, begins a three-night run with a scaled-down version of his New Cuban Express Big Band. Inspired by famed Cuban writer and independence hero José Martí, Valera has created a song cycle using traditional Cuban styles merged with contemporary Latin jazz.
    Valera, who lost his wife in 2020, repurposed Martí’s powerful poems as a personal cry for freedom, justice and passion for life. Valera will be joined by Felipe Lamoglia on saxophone, Ricky Rodriquez on bass and Jimmy McBride on drums.

    National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Sheila Jordan follows the next night. Widely regarded as one of the great jazz vocalists, she remains innovative and passionate, at the youthful of 92. Always eager to forge new connections, Jordan will be accompanied by Capital Region jazz artists Dylan Perrillo on bass, Nick Anderson on drums, and Tyler Giroux on piano.

    Saratoga’s own Chuck Lamb closes out the festivities on Sunday with a trio featuring Harvey Sorgen on drums and Jay Anderson on bass. Lamb, best known as the pianist for the Brubeck Brothers Quartet, is the artist-in-residence for the acclaimed monthly “Jazz at Caffe Lena” music series. Each musician brings a wealth of talent and experience to the stage ranging from all corners of jazz music.

    Caffe Lena offers a state of the art live stream experience with professional sound engineering and a multi-camera broadcasting system. Throughout the COVID-19 shutdown, the Caffe’s live stream capabilities became a lifeline for the organization as they shifted their programming to an entirely virtual experience. Now they are open for limited capacity live audiences, while also continuing to stream its nightly performances as a way to stay connected with music lovers far and wide.
