  • Albany Pro Musica Begins their 41st Season on August 8

On August 8th, Albany Pro Musica will begin their 41st season of live music, which will also be their first show since the COVID-19 pandemic began. There is something for everyone this season, ranging from Broadway to Brahms.

    albany pro musica

Albany Pro Musica is a choral ensemble known for its ability to conquer all genres of music with distinction. It was founded in 1981 by a professor at the University of Albany that believed there was need for community musicians to get the opportunity to perform professionally. APM attracts audiences from all over the world with their diverse, bold musical projects.

Their 41st season starts off strong, with a performance of musical theater favorites, including “Aquarius”/“Let the Sunshine In” from Hair; “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music; and a medley of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s best Broadway tunes. The Park Playhouse in Albany’s Washington Park will allow for distanced outdoor seating to ensure the safety of our patrons and singers.

    albany pro musica

On October 24th, APM will perform “Let’s Talk About Love,” which is exactly what the title describes it as — the ensemble will feature various compositions bout love, ranging from heartache to platonic and romantic love to sacred, intimate love. The concert will be held at Troy Savings Bank Music Hall and will commence at 3pm.

    albany pro musica

On December 19th, APM will perform one of its most popular shows, their Christmas special. It is a holiday tradition for many, designed to inspire and celebrate through the power of music. Framed by Lauridsen’s mesmerizing O Magnum Mysterium and The Many Moods of Christmas Suite, this performance will also feature the premiere of a new work for chorus, orchestra, and baritone, written and performed by APM’s composer-in-residence Bradley Ellingboe. The show will be performed at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall.

On March 6th, 2022, Albany Pro Musica will indulge in Rachmaninoff’s magnificent “All Night Vigil,” often referred to as “Vespers.” It is one of the most celebrated choral works in history and is noted for its beautiful spirituality. It will also be performed at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall.

The closing show for the 41st season of Albany Pro Musica will be Brahms’ Human Requiem on May 8th, 2022. Unlike traditional requiem masses, this piece focuses on the living, beginning with the second Beatitude: “Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.” The performance will be a tribute to all the lives lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and to provide comfort for those who lost loved ones during this time. It is the most beautiful and precious way to finish off a highly anticipated, meaningful 41st season for Albany Pro Musica.

Tickets for and more information regarding this concert series can be found here!

  • Third Time’s The Charm for the Dead and Knickerbocker Arena: June 11, 1992

By 1992, there was no secret about the affinity the Grateful Dead had for Albany’s Knickerbocker Arena. This would be the third year in a row they made sure to make a tour stop here. But after two previous three-night runs, including the acclaimed one from 1990 that will always be associated with their acclaimed Dozin’ At The Knick live album, the Dead only had two nights to play all the hits this year. This first of these performance went down 29 years ago today.

    Dead Knickerbocker

Tonight’s Grateful Dead show, despite a ravenous Knickerbocker Arena, has a very relaxed open as the band slowly ambles into a “Bertha” opener. No complaints are heard as the crowd drowns out the opening lyrics in delight. After a mild jam that’s peppered with some thunderous bass notes from Phil Lesh, the entire room seems to be singing along for the remainder of this first set staple. The “New Minglewood Blues” that comes next begins in similar fashion. Garcia and keyboardist Vince Welnick each drop a couple of bluesy solos and get stretched out a little while, in between, Bob Weir takes care of the vocals, making note of the “Upstate fllies” in a nod to the locale.

“Row Jimmy” gets the rest of the band singing again, and sees more dexterous work from Garcia on guitar, as he digs into his MIDI bag of effects and offers something that sounds closer to a flute solo at one point. After three classic Dead originals, the first cover of the night is Bob Dylan’s “Queen Jane Approximately,” with Weir once again manning lead vocals. Welnick gets in on the act here and highlights this one with a blissful, ethereal piano solo.

“Dire Wolf” finally brings the tempo back up and the band rips through another first set mainstay, with Garcia plowing through his requisite solo with ease. But it’s near a minute and a half until the next selection is made, “Beat It On Down The Line.” With both the Dead and Knickerbocker Arena now alive and well, the sing-a-long is back on thanks to “Loose Lucy” as the crowd continues to add their collective backing to the lyrics in revelry. Welnick makes the shift from piano to Hammond organ nicely and adds some flavorful support as well. “The Music Never Stopped” then puts the fitting finishing touches on a crisp opening set that’s nothing but treasured Dead originals and a Dylan cover.

The Dead dive into one of their more recent originals with “Foolish Heart” to kick off the second set at the Knick. Garcia and Welnick once again complement each other beautifully on guitar and keys, respectively, as the band sears through this one effortlessly. No extended jam of note develops afterwards. Instead, it’s a brief pause and away with “Playin’ In The Band” where, after a quick run through of verse, the collective improvisation starts almost immediately and doesn’t let up anytime soon. When it does, the beginning to “Uncle John’s Band” ensues, as the audience seems to come back up for air after the quick yet heavy display of psychedelic mayhem that immediately preceded it.

The Dead then go back down to the bottom, the way bottom, courtesy of an extended “Drums” > “Space” sequence that stretches out to nearly a half hour. A well rested Knick is more than happy to help out with the vocals for the “I Need A Miracle” that finally emerges. A quick jam, punctuated by an aggressive Welnick piano solo, is crafted before things slow down one last time with “Wharf Rat.”

    Dead Knickerbocker

After another set comprised of solely live Dead originals, and some intense improv, the evening closes out with a pair of covers. Weir hams it up one last time on vocals, and Welnick on piano as well for that matter, on Chuck Berry’s rocker “Around and Around” that suits the crowd perfectly. And the band help themselves to some more Dylan material with “The Mighty Quinn” that serves as tonight’s encore.

With night one of the two-night run now in the books, expectations were surely through the roof for the following evening. Thanks to some sort of odd cross-promotional gadgetry straight out of 1992, if you held onto your ticket stub from tonight, the Dead would make sure you were well fed for tomorrow.

To kick off PRIDE month and launch their ‘Come On Out’ Summer Performance Series, “party-inducing” queer performance company The Neon Coven is taking over Radial Park’s drive-in arena with JANNIFER’S BODY, starring Jan from Season 12 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, performing live for one night only on Wednesday, June 30th.

    The Neon Coven JANNIFER'S BODY

RuPaul’s Drag Race star Jan is eating boys alive and living to sing about it in JANNIFER’S BODY, a blood-soaked love letter to queer horror and the emo-punk music of the early millennium put together by The Neon Coven.

Featuring a screening of the cult classic 2009 film Jennifer’s Body along with the music of Avril Lavigne, Panic! At The Disco, Kesha, and more, this one-night-only experience in Radial Park’s uniquely “Cinemersive” outdoor drive-in arena is going to be the gay prom night you’ll remember for the rest of your life. Call your Top 8. We’ll see you there.

Joining Jan on stage are face-melting Neon Coven performers Tony Lawrence Clements, Mark Mauriello, Kelly McIntyre, Jada Temple, and Ryan Gregory Thurman.

The show features original music, arrangements, and costume design by Andrew Barret Cox, as well as additional original music by Kelly McIntyre. All summer series shows are directed by Shira Milikowsky. The Managing Producer of the series is Carla Troconis.

The Radial Park drive-in offers distanced picnic tables that seat up to 5 people, as well as parking spots for cars. General Admission Tickets cost $100 per car/table, and VIP Tickets, which include premium seating and a post-show meet & greet with Jan, cost $175. “Doors” open at 8pm; show at
    9pm.

Radial Park is located at Halletts Point in Astoria and is accessible by taking the NYC Ferry to Astoria Landing (5 minute walk) or the N/W train to the 30th Ave station (20 minute walk).

Additional shows in the ‘Come On Out’ Summer Performance Series will be announced at a later date. Shows will take place at various venues across New York City.

The Neon Coven is a growing performance collective creating theater, events, and nightlife. We like: queer people, theater in non-traditional spaces, and screaming.

Their first production, the immersive nightclub musical OSCAR at The Crown, had a twice-extended run at 3 Dollar Bill in Bushwick and was described by The New York Times as “a party-inducing Rocky Horror transplanted to a 1990s Madonna video.”

Other work includes the 2019 World Pride Opening Ceremony at Barclays Center, shows at Arlene’s Grocery and Ars Nova, and collaborations with Hot Rabbit Events and The Muse Brooklyn. Follow us on Instagram and TikTok @theneoncoven.
