  • Patty Griffin & Gregory Alan Isakov will stop in Troy and Ithaca this October

    The two-time Grammy award-winning artist Patty Griffin and Grammy award-nominated singer-songwriter Gregory Alan Isakov have announced plans for the co-headline tour “An Evening with Patty Griffin and Gregory Alan Isakov.”

    Marking the first live, in-person concert performances for both artists since early 2020, Patty Griffin and Gregory Alan Isakov will be kicking off their tour on October 5th. On the 14-date tour, they’ll make stops at Troy Savings Bank Music Hall and the State Theatre of Ithaca.

    Patty Griffin is among the most consequential singer-songwriters of her generation, a quintessentially American artist whose wide-ranging canon incisively explores the intimate moments and universal emotions that bind us together.

    Gregory Alan Isakov is a singer, songwriter, and performer, beloved by his devoted community of fans and critics alike. Since his debut, Isakov has released five full-length albums including his most recent, 2019’s Evening Machines, which was nominated for Best Folk Album at the 62nd Grammy Awards.

  • White and Blues: Music on the Farm takes place June 27 in Peru

    On June 27th in Peru, NY, just south of Plattsburgh, Plattsburgh Blues and Jazz (PB&J) will present White and Blues: Music on the Farm at White Rainbow Farm.

    White and Blues will featuring Giovanina Bucci, Lucid (trio) and the Memphis based Ghost Town Blues Band for an afternoon of soul, funk and modern blues. Giovanina Bucci, a rising singer songwriter with a brand new album release, will be opening at 1pm. Following at 2pm will be the immensely popular Lucid (trio) ready to funk it up.

    Then at 3pm, the Ghost Town Blues Band will take to the stage with a show and energy that has been hailed as the best new live blues show in the world. Their album Shine debuted number one on the Billboard Blues Charts and the band was awarded the International Entertainer of 2019.

    White and Blues is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and administered by the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts. 

    At White Rainbow Farm there is a beautiful open area with a sheltered barn stage and more then enough space for social distancing. Bring lawn chairs or a blanket to enjoy the music and check out the food truck, beer and craft vendors.

  • Kate McDonnell Returns With 5th Studio Album “Ballad of a Bad Girl”

    After a 15 year hiatus following her acclaimed album Where the Mangoes Are, Albany-area folk singer Kate McDonnell is back with her fifth studio album, Ballad of a Bad Girl.

    For this latest project, McDonnell collaborated with drummer Jerry Marotta, bassist Tony Levin and co-writer Anne Lindley. Recorded at Dreamland Studios in Hurley, NY last summer, Ballad of a Bad Girl features 11 tracks. McDonnell’s poignant songwriting is showcased, as well as her raw, acoustic instrumentals. It is easy to be reminded of classic Joni Mitchell or Joan Baez tracks when listening.

    The opening title track “Ballad of a Bad Girl” begins with plucky, yet rich guitar. Through the context of a sisterly relationship, McDonnell sings about femininity and being misunderstood : Folks call us those bad, bad girls/We’re just misunderstood. Complex family dynamics are a major theme of the record. On the track “Father and Son”, McDonnell addresses masculinity and rage: Father and son, father and son/Two angry hearts beating as one.

    McDonnell also explores topics of travel, imagination and romance. She sings about faraway places in “Berlin” and “Malibu” and tells dreamlike stories of meeting and losing loved ones and the harsh realities of broken promises.

    Along with 9 original tracks, Ballad of a Bad Girl features 2 covers: “Dimming of the Day” by Richard Thompson and “Long As I Can See The Light” by John Fogerty. McDonnell’s vocal and instrumental interpretations of these 70s tracks are unique and pleasant. Her voice conveys strong emotion and her fingerstyle guitar playing feels artful and personal.

  • Caffè Lena Hosting USA Shows for Quebec Jazz Festival

    With live music returning to Capital Region venues, Saratoga’s historic Caffe Lena is in a position to assist a popular jazz festival in a part of the world that is still restricted by COVID-19. With American musicians unable to cross the border for their gigs at Quebec Jazz In June, Caffè Lena will instead be producing the shows at its location in Saratoga and making it available to the Quebec Audience via livestream.

    Quebec Jazz in June, a ten day festival that ushers jazz music to the streets of Quebec City has pivoted to a hybrid online, and in-person model as Canada keeps its southern border closed.

    “This legendary venue has stepped up to ensure that world class American musicians will once again be a part of our annual festivities – this time through the magic of live streaming.” Says Simon Couillard, the Festival’s General Manager.

    Three nights of the festivals headline artists will be live streamed from Caffe Lena to the Festival’s social media platforms. Capital Region audiences can also attend the concerts in-person, in the intimate listening room located in downtown Saratoga Springs.

    “Standing in as Quebec’s USA Stage is a win-win-win. The artists get to play for the festival’s audience; Quebec Jazz can hang onto their American line-up; and Saratoga gets to experience the festival’s mainstage musicians in person,” says Caffe Lena’s Executive Director Sarah Craig.

    The collaboration between Caffe Lena and Quebec Jazz in June is one to look forward to, and is a positive thing as a result of the pandemic. The historic venue has been regularly sharing their stage and live stream capabilities with a number of venues and organizations from around the region, including 2020’s Freihoffer’s Jazz Festival.

    Producing more than 200 shows during 2020, the venue’s audience has expanded far beyond its 110-seat listening room, while providing more than $100,000 in income to musicians who were not able to play live shows in over a year.

    “This event is a perfect example of the growth of the independent music world that happened over the past year. There was pain while it was happening, but the end result–greater access for all–is exciting for artists and audiences. This international collaboration with Quebec Jazz In June is truly exhilarating,” says Craig.

    The American artists performing at Caffe Lena for this series will include Manuel Valera New Cuban Express on Thursday, June 17th, Sheila Jordan on Friday, June 18th, and the Chuck Lamb Trio featuring Chuck Lamb, Jay Anderson and Harvey Sorgen on Sunday, June 20th.

    Grammy-nominated pianist and composer Valera, who has played with Paquito D’Rivera and Arturo Sandoval, begins a three-night run with a scaled-down version of his New Cuban Express Big Band. Inspired by famed Cuban writer and independence hero José Martí, Valera has created a song cycle using traditional Cuban styles merged with contemporary Latin jazz.
    Valera, who lost his wife in 2020, repurposed Martí’s powerful poems as a personal cry for freedom, justice and passion for life. Valera will be joined by Felipe Lamoglia on saxophone, Ricky Rodriquez on bass and Jimmy McBride on drums.

    National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Sheila Jordan follows the next night. Widely regarded as one of the great jazz vocalists, she remains innovative and passionate, at the youthful of 92. Always eager to forge new connections, Jordan will be accompanied by Capital Region jazz artists Dylan Perrillo on bass, Nick Anderson on drums, and Tyler Giroux on piano.

    Saratoga’s own Chuck Lamb closes out the festivities on Sunday with a trio featuring Harvey Sorgen on drums and Jay Anderson on bass. Lamb, best known as the pianist for the Brubeck Brothers Quartet, is the artist-in-residence for the acclaimed monthly “Jazz at Caffe Lena” music series. Each musician brings a wealth of talent and experience to the stage ranging from all corners of jazz music.

    Caffe Lena offers a state of the art live stream experience with professional sound engineering and a multi-camera broadcasting system. Throughout the COVID-19 shutdown, the Caffe’s live stream capabilities became a lifeline for the organization as they shifted their programming to an entirely virtual experience. Now they are open for limited capacity live audiences, while also continuing to stream its nightly performances as a way to stay connected with music lovers far and wide.

  • New York Series: Guy Carawan ‘We Shall Overcome’

    Some songs are written with such great embodiment of the human spirit that they become far bigger than a simple, melodic hook you whistle in the shower. They are the songs that represent a period in time for a group of oppressed people and epitomize the challenges they faced on a daily basis. Unlike other songs that come and go as life drifts on, these anthems leave such an impact that they are still read about in history books years later. For the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, the protest song “We Shall Overcome” was sang far and wide in tribute to peaceful protest. While the song was influential to many groups in the 1960s, its significance in the LGBT movement came after the Stonewall riots of New York in 1969.

    Most people know that Pride Month is in June, however, many don’t realize that’s because on June 28, 1969, the catalyst for the LGBT movement occurred in riot form at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village. The Stonewall Inn was a well-known, mafia-run gay night club which hosted an array of illegal activities from an absent liquor license and prostitution to dealing drugs. While the bar owners were normally tipped off about police raids, on the night of the 1969 riot, they weren’t told anything would be happening. The police barricaded the 200+ patrons and employees in the bar and began to arrest all the transvestites they could find.

    As the cops were arresting patrons, to their surprise, bystanders began to push back against the heavy police presence in the form of verbal taunts and thrown bottles. At that point, raids on gay bars were becoming routine and, for the LGBT community, the raid on the Stonewall Inn was the last straw. As police were dragging people into their paddy wagon, the crowd began to boil and violence soon erupted. Bricks and bottles were being thrown at the cops as more people from around the neighborhood began to join in on the protest, forcing the police into a rare retreat. While some of the crowd turned violent, many others committed to nonviolence in the form of jokes, kick-lines and songs.

    As an unstable riot occurred all around, the protest hymn “We Shall Overcome” echoed through the streets long into the night. For days following the Stonewall riot, more protests, mostly nonviolent, began to pop up all around the city. A gay community began to form and within six months two gay activist organizations were established in New York. The movement was given legs, and by June 28 of the following year, the first gay pride marches took place in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco to commemorate the anniversary of the riots. “We Shall Overcome” was a vital tool used to demonstrate nonviolence throughout each protest.

    Originally written as a hymn titled “I’ll Overcome Someday” by Charles Albert Tindley in 1900, the song was warped multiple times throughout history before it became the protest anthem we know today. It was sang by tobacco workers, vagabond travelers, and eventually political activists. It became associated with the Civil Rights Movement in 1959 when Guy Carawan sang his and Pete Seeger’s version of the song at a nonviolent civil rights protest. From there, other artists began using it as a protest tool, playing it at rallies, folk festivals and other demonstrations to make it clear to the world that oppression will not be tolerated.

  • The Falcon Plans Juneteenth Celebration

    Celebrate Juneteenth in words, praise, and music at The Falcon in the Hudson Valley. The scenically-located historic venue in Marlboro has planned an evening hosted by and featuring internationally renown gospel singer Bernard Clinton. Also featured on the bill are Newburgh’s Josiah Borden and Albany’s Ryan Graham, with special guests The Fabulous Rainbow Singers.

    The evening will also feature Professor Ciesta Little-Quinn of the Department Black Studies at SUNY New Paltz and the Arts Mid-Hudson Folk Arts Program, who has spoken extensively on the history of Gospel Music, its luminaries, and their impact on the Gospel world in the Hudson Valley. 

    The performances at this free outdoor even start at 7pm on June 19th. However space is limited and guests will need to reserve a table in advance to attend. Seating for dinner begins at 5pm. The Falcon’s menu features items that incorporate foods from local farms that practice sustainable agriculture. To reserve a table at The Falcon for Juneteenth, head to their reservations page. While there is no cover charge for the event, donations are encouraged.

    To keep guests and staff safe, precautions are still in place, and will be strictly enforced. Patrons must reserve a table. There is no “standing room.” Social distancing parameters will be enforced. Guests are required to wear masks unless seated at their tables.


  • Yasgur’s May Meltdown Music Festival Features PEAK, The New Motif

    Yasgur Road in Bethel will open its first festival of the 2021 season with Yasgur’s May Meltdown over Memorial Day Weekend. With more than 30 bands on the lineup, including headliners The New Motif and PEAK, the festival takes place at Max Yasgur’s former 103-acre homestead in Bethel, NY.

    Yasgur Road hosts multiple shows each year, including their annual Woodstock Reunion. The venue keeps vending affordable but encourages bringing your own supplies for the weekend (no glass, please). Bathrooms, showers, campfires, and camping near the stage are just some of the amenities of the festival grounds, as well as onsite parking close by.  Free craft vending is allowed with purchase of a weekend pass. Dog passes are also available.

    Truly the home of the spirit of Woodstock, the most famous music festival in history, Yasgur Road is less than 3 miles from Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. Max Yasgur’s former homestead is now dedicated to the music festival industry, offering quality entertainment and camping in a natural wooded setting.

    The New Motif, an ever-evolving eclectic jam funk band originally formed on Cape Cod, MA perform music infused with deep psychedelic grooves and dynamic improvisation. Joining them as headliners are PEAK, a Brooklyn-based group full of psychedelic Indie fun with a mix of poetic, melodic songwriting, moody electrofunk, riffed-out blues-rock, and exploratory danceable improvisations.

  • Hearing Aide: Oliver Wood ‘Always Smilin’

    Oliver Wood has released, Always Smilin’ a compilation of songs recorded over the past couple years. The frontman of The Wood Brothers didn’t head into this solo project with the intent to create an album. It just grew organically from sessions held with friends, old and new. The list of collaborators reads like a who’s who of contemporary roots music: Chris Long, Jano Rix, Susan Tedeschi, Phil Cook, John Medeski, Tyler Greenwall, Phil Madeira, Aaron Lipp, and Carsie Blanton.

    The album’s name, Always Smilin’, comes from the lines of the opening track from Oliver Wood, “Kindness.” The folk ditty highlights Wood’s knack for turning a phrase, as he croons in his distinguished soulful voice:

    I know a man
    He’s always smilin’
    I said how do you do it
    Do you lean into it?

    Despite the upbeat tempo, it’s not a happy-go-lucky song. It’s about the indelible capacity of the human spirit to find hope in the face of adversity. The rest of the album follows suit, leaning into that propensity for seeking out hope, often through communing with kin or faith in spirituality. 

    Although an album made like this from random sessions with a variety of people could sound like a modge-podge, Wood’s deep-seated values seem to be the  thread that holds it all together. 

    The music and melodies meander playfully across genres – folk, country, and even a couple gospel covers (“The Battle is Over (But the War Goes On)” and “Climbing High Mountains (Tryin’ To Get Home)”). There’s an easy-going freeness that flowed organically from creating without a destination in mind. The journey takes the listener through a soundscape created by this handful of musicians, masters of their craft, as they do what they enjoy doing best. 

    And that joy shines through. That feeling is infectious. The album will leave you smilin’.

  • Allman Betts Band Announce Themed Livestream Performances

    Along with their in-person tour dates The Allman Betts Band has announced three virtual shows. NoCap will be hosting the three livestream shows for The Allman Betts Band during the month of June.

    The Allman Betts Band’s debut album Down to the River saw them selling out a US tour and topping charts until late July of 2019 when their European leg got cut short after Devon Allman’s hospital stay. After Allman’s healthy return and a run of fall tour dates, he and co-founder, guitarist, and singer Duane Betts, wrote their second album, Bless Your Heart. 

    Over a week’s time, they recorded 13 songs,  at Alabama’s Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, the historic recording facility where they’d cut their debut album with additional tracking in Memphis and St. Louis. Grammy-winning producer Matt Ross-Spang reprised his role helming the recording. 

    Bassist and singer Berry Duane Oakley’s ABB vocal debut on his original song (“The Doctor’s Daughter”). With guest contributions for Jimmy Hall, Shannon McNally, Art Edmaiston, Susan Marshall, and Reba Russell.  Singer-songwriter Stoll Vaughan, who collaborated on five of Down to the River’s nine tracks, advised on the developing material. 

    Among the setlist for the tour is “Magnolia Road,” “Pale Horse Rider,” “Ashes of My Lovers,” and “Airboats & Cocaine.”
