  • Tragedy Drop Remastered Metal/Disco Cover Album, “Sweet Caroline” single

New York based cover song reinventors, TRAGEDY, are to release heavy metal interpretations of disco, soft-rock, and pop favorites on their remastered “best-of” album, Disco Balls To The Wall, including new single “Sweet Caroline”. The album will be out July 30 via Napalm Records.

    TRAGEDY

TRAGEDY’s interpretation of the Neil Diamond anthem includes heavy riffs and organ, but their music video follows the band deep into the woods of horror.

On the video’s meaning, TRAGEDY said, “This is the true story of when we went into the woods to shoot a music video, then things turned all Blair Witch and True Blood on us. An unlikely scenario, for sure.  But no more unlikely than a metal tribute to the Bee Gees doing a King Neil Diamond song.  The chilling tale of when “sweet” Caroline and her creatures set their sights on a group of innocent, handsome, muscular musicians, luring them to their untimely undeaths.”

The band’s first offering with Napalm Records will include TRAGEDY’s unique twist on hits from Abba, Toto, Bonnie Tyler, and Adele, just to name a few. These fearsome brothers drop the perfect selection of all-time favorite disco, soft-rock, and pop favorites – completely reimagining them as glorious, red-hot heavy metal treatments.

Disco Balls to the Wall is the biggest, sexiest collection of hits we’ve ever released.” TRAGEDY added, “It’s as if the Bee Gees turned into werewolves, ate some teens, then bred with the local dog population; thus creating the world’s most beastly recordings of disco and soft-rock songs ever made. Sharing this album with your friends and lovers will make you 500% more desirable.”

The band have covered The Bee Gee’s “How Deep Is Your Love”, “Stayin’ Alive” and “Tragedy”, the tunes of Slayer in “Raining Blood”, and “It’s Raining Men” from American duo The Weather Girls, to form an absolutely never heard before album. Disco Balls to the Wall is finally topped by a smashing live version of Donna Summer’s fabulous “Hot Stuff”, featuring Alex Skolnick of Testament on lead guitar.

  • Happy Birthday, Inspectah Deck!

Inspectah Deck, born Jason Richard Hunter on July 6, 1970, and an infamous member of the groups Wu-Tang Clan and Czarface, celebrates his birthday today.

As a rapper and producer, Inspectah Deck has developed the sound for many Wu-Tang tracks and members, his own solo endeavors, and movie soundtracks. Throughout his career audiences have known him for his intricate lyricism and his verses on many of the group’s most revered songs.

Born and raised in Staten Island, Inspectah Deck routinely mentions the Park Hill Projects in Clifton, Staten Island, where he grew up and went to school with the future Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, and Remedy.

His on stage persona of being laid-back, quiet, and low-key, was a counterbalance to the antics of Method Man, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, and RZA. Apparently, that also translated to his day to day personality as well, as that is what fellow members of the Wu-Tang Clan know him for.

Wu-Tang Clan Photo: Jonathan Weiner 2014 For RS1223 Story via Fant, Phylicia and Hawkins, Hillary

As the second most featured member on Wu-Tang’s debut album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), Deck provided highly acclaimed verses for the singles “C.R.E.A.M.,” “Protect Ya Neck,” “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing ta Fuck Wit,” and “Da Mystery of Chessboxin’.”

On Wu-Tang’s second group album, Wu-Tang Forever, which debuted atop the Billboard 200 and was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 1998 Grammy Awards, Deck produced the track “Visionz” and contributed a solo track, “The City”, as well as writing one of the most critically acclaimed verses in hip-hop on the group’s hit single “Triumph”.

Inbetween contributing to the later albums of the Wu-Tang Clan, including The W, Iron Flag, 8 Diagrams, and A Better Tomorrow; Deck worked on several other projects.

Along with features on fellow Wu members’ solo projects, including Method Man’s Tical, Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…, GZA’s Liquid Swords, and Ghostface Killah’s Ironman; Deck also provided production for Method Man, RZA, and GZA throughout the years.

In 2013, Deck formed Czarface with Boston duo 7L & Esoteric. Their debut album featuring the legendary DJ Premier was called Czarface. The group has collaborated with names like MF Doom and Ghostface Killah. With albums including Every Hero Needs a Villain, which was released in 2015, and A Fistful of Peril in 2016.

Deck’s work in film has included composing for movies such as Meet Dave, The Wackness, and Nerve.

Deck’s debut solo album Uncontrolled Substance was initially set to release in 1997, however, due to a flood in producer RZA’s basement studio, which destroyed over one hundred beats, including all of the instrumentals made for the album, it was finally released in 1999 and featured more of Deck’s own production.

In 2003, Inspectah Deck released his second studio album, The Movement, which he later stated did not live up to his expectations despite having popular songs like “City High” on the tracklisting. Three years later, in 2006 he released The Resident Patient, which was intended as a prequel to The Movement. The mixtape turned album was a slight divergence from Deck’s previous discography due to its cinematic themes and homages.

In 2010, Inspectah Deck released his third solo album Manifesto, which features guest-appearances from Raekwon, Cormega, Termanology, Planet Asia, Cappadonna, Kurupt, and M.O.P.’s Billy Danze.

The album Chamber No. 9, which was released in 2019 will reportedly be his final album as a solo artist. Whatever the future holds in store for Inspectah Deck we’ll all be waiting to hear and enjoy. Happy birthday, Inspectah Deck!

  • Merged Pop-Punk Band RODERIK Release “You’ll Never Know”

RODERIK, the Long Island pop-punk/post-hardcore band, debuted a new single titled “You’ll Never Know.” This is the band’s second single and the latest in a series of new tunes the band will be releasing this year.

    RODERIK

The band name, RODERIK, derived from Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher, and fittingly formed during the early stages of a global pandemic, is comprised of remnants and fragments of bands that once reverberated through the vibrant Long Island music scene. Members include Alternative Press recognized band Approaching Troy, singer/songwriter Jake Anthony Salazar & guitarist Jay T. Sutherland set out with bassist David P. K., and drummer Danny Nugent, to rebuild and reformulate.

After years of writing and playing shows together, these four members have finally come together to not only make music, but build visual experiences that would mirror that of its dark origins. The band aims to combine musical elements with visual representation, showcasing the dark and honest truth of Salazar’s dark lyrics, which stem from his life experiences and ongoing battle with depression.

Of the new track, singer/songwriter Jake Anthony Salazar said, “In many ways, “You’ll Never Know” is a sequential follow up to our first single, “Save Me. Save Me” which was about my internal monologue during one of the most difficult times in my life. Whereas “You’ll Never Know” is about realizing I had to save myself, and reconciling with that. Only I could make the changes that were needed for me to be happy, but with change comes loss. “You’ll Never Know” is more focused on coming to the reality of my situation, and the grief that came with escaping it. Things that are good for us, in the long run, don’t always feel that great in the now, and this song is me trying to come to terms with that.”

To stay up to date with RODERIK follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

Stream “You’ll Never Know” below, and on Spotify and Apple Music.

  • Don’t miss Amythyst Kiah at Stone Ridge Orchards in July

Breakout star, Amythyst Kiah, will perform at Stone Ridge Orchard on July 17 at 4 pm to 8 pm (door open at 3 pm). All ages are welcome at this socially conscious, safe, and COVID-19 compliant event. Proceeds for the evening show will benefit The Hudson Valley LGBTQ Center.

    Amythyst Kiah

As the only New York area appearance of Amythyst Kiah, the show will find Kiah performing songs from her new collection, Wary + Strange, out June 18 on Rounder Records. The album marks the glorious collision of two vastly different worlds: the iconoclastic alt-rock that first sparked her musical passion, and the roots/old-time-music scene where she’s found breakout success in recent years, including recognition from Rolling Stone as “one of Americana’s great up-and-coming secrets.”

The singles off this album have been Fancy Drones, Hangover Blues, Wild Turkey, and Black Myself. The last of which she performed during her late night debut on Jimmy Kimmel. When met with the transcendent quality of her newly elevated sound, what emerges is an extraordinary vessel for Kiah’s songwriting. These are exciting times for Kiah and her music. The sound of her first two albums Her Chest of Glass and Dig culminated into the success of Wary + Strange.

    https://youtu.be/yMx7bXA4_H4

Produced by Tony Berg (Phoebe Bridgers, Amos Lee, Andrew Bird) and made with esteemed musicians like Blake Mills, Wary + Strange arrives as a deeply immersive body of work, endlessly redefining the limits of roots music in its inventive rhythms and textures. With an unforgettable voice that’s both unfettered and exquisitely controlled, Kiah gracefully interlaces political commentary and personal revelation, ultimately offering a raw yet nuanced examination of grief, alienation, and the hard-won triumph of total self-acceptance.

She honed into vibrant musicality in part through her studies in East Tennessee State University’s Bluegrass, Old Time, Country Music program. The Chattanooga, Tennessee-bred singer/songwriter has expanded on the uncompromising artistry she’s displayed as a member of Our Native Daughters—an all-women-of-color supergroup. With whom Kiah first penned “Black Myself” that then earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best American Roots Song and won Song of the Year at the Folk Alliance International Awards. She’s been included in People Magazine’s “Talented Black Musical Artists on the Rise in 2021”. Kiah has also been nominated for three Americana Music Awards.

Spread out on a beautiful 115-acre farm, the performance can be enjoyed along with other family-friendly activities available at Stone Ridge Orchard. For more info contact Stone Ridge Orchard either by phone at 845-687-2587 or by email at SROrchardEvents@gmail.com.

To stay up to date with Amythyst Kiah visit her website or follow her on social media, including Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Tickets are available for purchase at StoneRidgeOrchard.com.

In the newest episode of Salute The Songbird, host Maggie Rose is joined by Kiah to talk about her new album and the experiences that led to her success. Amythyst shares stories from growing up in Tennessee, how support and encouragement from her parents helped her overcome issues with identity and anxiety, and the impact music and writing have had on her personal journey.

  • Bedroom Pop Artist on the Rise: Meet Grace Yurchuk

Warwick native and 18-year-old college freshman, Grace Yurchuk, released two singles from her dorm room at NYU during the Spring semester. Written, recorded, and produced all from within the confines of the Covid quarantine.

    Grace Yurchuk

A student of the Vocal Performance program at NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, she recently received The Josh Goldfaden Award for writing from NYU College of Arts & Sciences and expects to make the Dean’s List this year.

If you need a song to play in the car that your friends will actually like, Grace Yurchuk is an artist to watch. So far with two singles out, she hasn’t missed. Following the rise in feel good music, these bedroom pop tracks are a good addition to playlists with similar artists such as Beach Bunny, Mitski, Phoebe Bridgers, and girl in red.

While it’s not unusual for a young musician to release a song, this effort was unique. When faced with the grim prospect of social isolation, online classes, and staying healthy, Grace turned to her music as a creative outlet. “Need Me” was a solo effort—written, recorded, mixed, mastered, and released from her dorm room without assistance from other artists or a professional studio.

    Grace Yurchuk

The second single Grace released on May 21, titled “Good Together,” has careful thought put into everything from backing vocals to synth, which were still hand-picked, mastered, and everything in between by Grace herself. If you thought “Need Me” was good, wait until you hear “Good Together.” The progress made in between songs can be heard and it is a pleasure to know this is only the start.

“I think I had a lot of time, more time than usual– I’m sure everybody did because of the pandemic– to do different projects. The way that the first single happened ‘Need Me,’ it came to me kind of suddenly when I was out and about. When it became something I couldn’t put down and I spent all that time on it, I was just like you know what I worked really hard, this one feels ready. I felt it, I kinda knew.”

Both singles that have been released so far deal with interpersonal relationships, released at a time when those were hard to find and maintain for everyone. “I’m from a really small town and the city was different, it was jumping into a totally different experience especially in the middle of a pandemic, and all of my online classes,” Grace explained. “Making new friends was a struggle at first, all I wanted was to make something that was long lasting, meaningful, and making friends that would matter to me.”

When times were particularly tough for the college first year, she turned to music. “I’ve always fallen back on recording, that’s why I’ve done it for so long. I could always depend on it, so when it came down to that– in Manhattan living alone, I was like ‘This is it. This is what I do,’ I did what I know.”

A self-proclaimed Swiftie, Grace draws her inspiration from her pop idol. “I like different artists for different reasons and I like [Taylor Swift] because she has the ability to tell a story that I really admire, like with her lyrics. But then I also like bands like Beach Fossils, I like the atmosphere they create. Other than that I like Ariana Grande because who doesn’t like insane vocals like that. There are so many different factors that make a band or an artist great and for me whenever I make music I just want to tell a story somehow with the instrumentation or with the vocal, with the lyrics.”

But more important is the driving force that kept her going, and got her start, for all these years. “I record and I write alone, but the fact of the matter is, nobody ever does anything really alone. My parents have always pushed me to do this. They’ve never once told me to think about it, they’re always like, ‘No, this is your dream, go for it.’ All of my teachers along the way, I’ve played piano forever and my piano teacher was a big propelling force in that too. My sisters too. I say that I’m the big sister but I look up to both of them, more than they probably look up to me. They’re incredible and I play all of my music for them first. I love them.”

For her dream lineup to perform with, she chose Taylor Swift, obviously, and her new college friends. “I don’t want to sound cheesy but the first people I want to perform with are the people I met at school. Because I know I’ll get to see them again and they’re so insanely talented. As soon as I can go back to any New York venue I’ll want to perform with the people I’ve met and have encouraged me to do this too.”

As for future plans, “First thing, I just want to go out with all of my friends, I want to get a couple of gigs book. Everyone else has been not performing for a year but I am really desperate to get back in there. As long as I’m out and about and getting to live life again. Everywhere you look in the city there’s going to be something to do and I want to do everything.”

    Grace Yurchuk

Look out for Grace Yurchuk and her debut EP before the summer is over. “I’m looking forward to getting the EP out because I think it tells a really cool story.”

The two released tracks are available on all major platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, Pandora, TikTok, and Tidal. The song, entitled “Need Me,” has already been streamed thousands of times since its debut on April 16.

Make sure to stream “Need Me” and “Good Together”

  • The Lumineers Rehearsing New album “Brightside” at Bearsville Center

The Lumineers recently completed rehearsals for their new project, titled Brightside, at the famed Utopia Studios Soundstage at Bearsville Center in Woodstock. The band sequestered at the soundstage, originally built by Bearsville founder, Albert Grossman for future Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, Todd Rundgren.

    The Lumineers

Albert Grossman is best known for managing the early career of Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, The Band, Todd Rundgren and Peter, Paul and Mary and founding Bearsville Records in Woodstock. In 2019, British entrepreneur Lizzie Vann stepped in to save the historic complex from the wrecking ball and painstakingly restore the landmark music facility into a fully functional, world-class performance and rehearsal space, with recording facilities for audio and video recording.

Today the Bearsville Theater is the heartbeat of Woodstock’s new music scene with a full performance schedule including: NRBQ, Masters of the Telecasters, the Levin Bros., Lindsey Webster, Reelin’ in the Years, Nektar The Wailers and Belew, Mastellotto & Friends.

Fans have been anticipating a new release from the Lumineers since the 2019 album III. With a 2022 European tour scheduled, they will surely be working away until it comes time to fly overseas. Like everyone else, the band is stretching their performing muscles to finally put on a great show after all this time.

We were told that the Lumineers chose Bearsville because we could offer them a complete package: professional studio space, creative vibe, excellent technical facilities and support, extreme privacy, cool places to hang in the park by the Sawkill Creek and in the historic artist rooms of the Theater and studio. We worked to their timeframe, which was often urgent, but managed to always stay calm!  The Lumineers were wonderful guests and have a super-professional team, very polished and organized and it was truly an honor to host such an important band of artists right here where so many influential artists created some of their finest work. It was a great time and truly our pleasure.

Lizzie Vann, Bearsville owner and curator

Brightside, produced by longtime collaborator Simone Felice and produced, mixed, and engineered by David Baron over two sessions in winter and spring 2021 at Baron’s Sun Mountain Studios in bucolic Boiceville, NY. The album marks marks The Lumineers’ first new music in more than two years as well as the band’s most joyous and spontaneous piece of work thus far. The nine-song collection sees The Lumineers’ co-founders/co-songwriters Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites performing virtually all of the eclectic, effervescent instrumentation, with Baron on a wide variety of keyboards and backing vocals and more by Simone Felice, touring members Byron Isaacs and Lauren Jacobson, famed backing singer Cindy Mizelle (Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews Band), The Felice Brothers’ James Felice, and acclaimed singer-songwriter Diana DeMuth.

The “A Century of Music” auction hosted by Guernsey’s will be held over June 23-24

    A Century of Music

Fans will have the chance to bid on guitars owned by Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Bo Diddley, and Allen Collins, as well as a Daisy Rock Guitar autographed at the 2006 Grammys by Paul McCartney, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban.

Other instruments that will hit the block include Bill Clinton’s saxophone that he played at his Inaugural Ball, which is signed, Paul Butterfield and James Cotton’s harmonicas, and Chick Corea and Elton John’s pianos.

There is also a rare 18th century harp and the remarkable Meisel Collection, with more than 500 vintage violins and bows, banjos, ukuleles, mandolins and autoharps up for grabs. Other personal items include Billie Holiday’s gown, Buddy Holly’s performance jacket, original art work by John Lennon, the only known test pressing of Miles Davis playing “Meaning of the Blues” at Carnegie Hall, original Robert Freeman Beatles’ photos, memorabilia from the Fontaine Collection, the front doors from the Chelsea Hotel, and more available for the first time at this very special, music-inspired auction.

The most famed concert in history – Woodstock – also plays a big part in this auction. Guernsey’s will offer a variety of one of a kind memorabilia and art from the 1969 festival, including a hand painted directional map, sections of the stage, and photos from the official photographer. Many of the hand-painted panels by famed artists including Robert Indiana created during the 25th anniversary Woodstock Concert to restrain the 500,000 attendees will also be up for bid.

There are a pair of control room monitor speakers from Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Lady Studios on West 8th Street in New York. They were given to the original designer, who then loaned them to the Experienced Music Project, created by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, which is now known as the Museum of Pop Culture (or MoPOP). These will be sold side-by-side with Paul Butterfield’s Blues Band speakers that were on the stage at Woodstock, and the stage speakers used by Lynyrd Skynyrd prior to the band’s tragic 1970s plane crash.

Jason Becker, a virtuoso musician, songwriter and composer who is the world’s longest living survivor of amyotrophic literal sclerosis (ALS), is selling his guitars to raise funds to battle this debilitating disease, including his much-beloved “Numbers” guitar that has been played by several noted musicians, including KISS’ Paul Stanley, and Jason and Eddie Van Halen.

Beginning June 15, items for the A Century of Music auction can be viewed at Guernseys.com, liveauctioneers.com, and invaluable.com.
