Beach Fossils and Wild Nothing Sell out Brooklyn Steel

Indie music fans gathered in Brooklyn Steel Monday, November 1st, for a sold-out show featuring co-headliners Beach Fossils and Wild Nothing with support from Hannah Jadagu.

New York City local Hannah Jadagu opened up the show with a number of her top tracks, including Think Too Much, Bleep Bloop, and he latest track release, “All My Time Is Wasted.” Having been signed to Sub Pop at 18, Hannah has already amassed more than 100,000 followers on Spotify and only continues to grow. During her set she took the time to thank Beach Fossils and Wild Nothing for bringing her along on the tour, and noted bittersweetly that this was her final show with them. Wild Nothing took the stage next, bringing an upbeat atmosphere and their signature synthwave indie-pop sound. Having last played Brooklyn Steel in 2019 to record their live album, Live From Brooklyn Steel, frontman Jack Tatum mentioned how special this venue is to him, thanking the crowd for coming out. The crowd danced and swayed throughout their set, and the setlist included some of their biggest hits, like Partners In Motion, Paradise, and Shadow (which closed out their set). Local Brooklyn legends Beach Fossils entered to an already-fired-up crowd, with Van Halen’s “Jump” playing over the speakers as they walked onstage. They wasted no time jumping into their extended 16-song setlist, playing numerous fan favorites from throughout their catalog. They opened with “This Year,” followed by their hit single “Sugar.” Some notable tracks include “Down The Line” (their most-streamed song to date, with nearly 2.4 million views on Youtube), “What A Pleasure,” “Sleep Apnea,” “Out In The Way” (performed with Wild Nothing), and “Daydream” as the closer.

Beach Fossils have a new record coming out, “The Other Side of Life: Piano Ballads,” which you can pre-order on vinyl here and listen to here when it releases on November 19th.

Wavves Crashes Into Bowery Ballroom for One Wild Night

Wavves played a killer set for hardcore fans last week (Sunday October 24, 2021) at Bowery Ballroom with support from 95 Bulls and Harmless. A crowded venue moshed, screamed, and raged as each band increased the frenetic energy in the room.

95 Bulls opened up the show with a selection of hard-hitting rock/metal bangers. Having formed during summer 2020 in lockdown, you would never have known the band was so new. The five band members all come from their own bands (Ashjesus, The Mystery Lights, Smock, Bipolar, and Jelly Kelly), so it’s no wonder that they were able to perform with such obvious chemisty. Next up, Harmless brought a more soulful and mellow atmosphere to their performance. Between songs, the lead singer Nacho Cano helped return a few lost phones back to their owners, each time to big applause and laughter. The drummer drenched himself with his water bottle onstage to the pleased cheers of the crowd. Their latest single “Nacho’s” is available on streaming services now.

Wavves took the stage to an already-wild audience, practically chomping at the bit to hear them begin their set. They wasted no time at all playing hit after hit from their catalog, including a few tracks from their newest album, “Hideaway.” In the middle of their set, lead singer Nathan Williams invited the crowd to open the center of the dance floor briefly to allow for a mosh pit. By the end of the night everyone including the band was wearing a thick sheen of sweat and a wide smile. Japanese Breakfast Captivates Every heart at Brooklyn Steel With Four Sold Out Shows

Indie rock sensation Japanese Breakfast played four sold out shows at Brooklyn Steel last week (October 14-17, 2021), continuing their North American Fall 2021 Tour.

Luna Li opened for Japanese Breakfast the first three nights, her last involvement after having also opened for them throughout the first leg of the tour. Bringing a lot of warmth and enthusiasm, Li performed several of her biggest hits including “Alone But Not Lonely“, “Cherry Pit“, and a few energizing instrumentals from her Jams EP.

Luna Li remarked on how deeply thankful she was for the fans and for the huge opportunity to go on tour. She also mentioned how seeing Japanese Breakfast in concert several years ago had inspired her, stating,

as a Korean . . . seeing Michelle, another Korean, on stage meant so much to me.

Japanese Breakfast started their set with “Paprika,” the opening track from their latest album, Jubilee. Each time Michelle smashed the gong, the crowd screamed and cheered. They went immediately into the second track of the album “Be Sweet,” which lifted the crowd to an even louder chorus of cheers.

During their set, they included several fan favorite tracks, such as “Road Head,” “Boyish,” and “Everybody Wants to Love You.”

Apart from their successful run of performances, Japanese Breakfast front-woman and songwriter, Michelle Zauner, not only released an all-new soundtrack to accompany the video-game,Sable, last month, but had also launched her memoir Crying in H-Mart earlier this year as well.

Yo La Tengo Closes Out Central Park’s 2021 Summerstage Free Concert Series, Announce Hanukkah Celebration at Bowery Ballroom
Yo La Tengo helped bring Central Park’s 2021 Summerstage Free Concert Series to a close on Friday October 1st. Despite having to reschedule this performance from one month prior due to sever weather, fans were treated to perfect weather this time around. Fans enjoyed the first night of Autumn with plenty of fleece sweaters and a great lineup of performances.

The show opened up with three short films as a part of Rooftop Films’ Summer 2021 Summer Series. Next up, Amanda Nazario played a brief but energetic DJ set just as the sun began to set over Manhattan. And then Mountain Movers pumped up the crowd with their unique blend of drone and noise rock.

As Yo La Tengo took the stage, applause and cheers became screams when they opened with a cover of Velvet Underground’s “Who Loves the Sun.”

Their 90 minute set included several fan favorites such as “Autumn Sweater” (a natural inclusion) and “I’ll Be Around,” which they dedicated to Yoko Ono. Frontman Ira Kaplan brought his mother onstage to close out the concert with their cover of Anita Bryant’s “My Little Corner of the World.” The crowd ate it up, and the show ended on a high note.

Ira also announced at Summerstage that Yo La Tengo would once again be playing a series of eight Hanukkah shows at Bowery Ballroom from November 28 through December 5, coinciding with the eight nights of Hanukkah, which starts on November 28 and runs through the evening of December 6. Hi everybody, here to tell you that Hanukkah is just around the corner. (No kidding–it’s early this year!) And that we are going to return to the Bowery Ballroom and play all eight nights, just like we did before life got in the way. Comics, opening acts, whatever other nonsense we can cobble together, and the money will be given away. I’d consider writing more, but it still feels a little unreal to be contemplating this. And yet here we are.
Hanukkah starts on Sunday, November 28 and continues through Sunday, December 5. You must be fully vaccinated to enter the Bowery Ballroom. Tickets are $50 each and will go on sale on Friday, October 8 at 12 pm (noon) EDT. OK, gotta start practicing!

Julien Baker Lights Up Beacon Theatre With Support From Thao And Mini Trees

The North American Tour for Julien Baker is well underway, with her headlining show at The Beacon Theatre on, Tuesday , September 14 marking a significant milestone in her career. A packed crowd cheered on as she played hits from her catalogue, including several tracks from her latest album, Little Oblivions, which released earlier this year. Thao and Mini Trees opened up the show.

Julien began her set with the emotional and hard-hitting track Hardline, her latest album’s opening track. She played a wide range of songs, from the quietest and loudest moments in her catalogue. You can see the full setlist here.

Between songs Julien joked about how strange is was to be in a fully vaccinated and (partly) masked audience, thanked her New York audience for making the evening possible, and remarked on how strange this tour was compared to her last.

Warsaw Brooklyn Reopens its Doors For Sold Out Shows With Andy Shauf

With live music having returned to New York, Warsaw Brooklyn finally reopened its doors to fully vaccinated crowds for Andy Shauf’s sold-out two night run on September 9 and 10, 2021. Tomberlin opened both nights with lighthearted stage banter and mellow acoustic tunes, lending to the venue’s naturally intimate atmosphere.

After closing its doors during 2020 for the pandemic, Warsaw Brooklyn finally brought back their famous pierogis and reopened their stage for the starting leg of Andy Shauf’s North American tour. Shauf’s latest album, The Neon Skyline, had only come out in January of 2020 when their scheduled tour had to be postponed due to the pandemic.

Tomberlin opened for Shauf on both nights at Warsaw, playing some of her hits, including the sorrowful but sweet song, “Seventeen.” She also invited the crowd to sing along during her performance, which went over well as she smiled and sang along with her captive audience.

Shauf’s latest album gained some extra attention when the title track of his latest album, The Neon Skyline, was featured in Barack Obama’s Summer 2020 Playlist. Shauf’s setlist included several tracks from The Neon Skyline as well as highlights from the preceding album, The Party.
