  • Jason Matu Seeks A Better Tomorrow On “Fare Thee Well”

Jason Matu releases his first single “Fare Thee Well” today, September 17th, from his upcoming EP set for release October 15th.

    jason matu

Matu, a songwriter from Brooklyn creates music he describes as simple, immediate songs with a literary bent and expansive soundscapes. When told not to pursue music until he has completed college, Matu went ahead and enrolled into law school.

The indie artist’s new single displays an uplifting tone in a grim year plagued by the pandemic. “Fare Thee Well,” the first single from Jason Matu’s upcoming Same Day EP, is an Americana piece which paints a portrait of an overcoming feeling of perseverance and triumph.

    jason matu

Matu’s upcoming EP was written all in one day’s time and recorded by frequent collaborator and Grammy-nominated producer Justin Craig, responsible for Hedwig and The Angry Inch. Joining him are base and guitarists Jordan and Talor Steinberg of The Moon City Masters.

Eventually, Jason Matu rediscovered his musical purpose after insulating himself as a creative force in a short-lived arena rock band, and shifted priorities. he moved to Brooklyn. With a series of tragic medical emergencies, deaths, and global pandemics in the way, Jason was literally (and figuratively) forced underground. In his isolated apartment Jason found himself writing song after song.

    jason matu

With no one else to sing his compositions, Jason took it upon himself be the vocalist. Somewhere in the cracks between 5,000 discarded lines of song, Jason found his voice. Jason made his debut album Dumb Ecstatic Bliss, which rose to #115 on the college radio charts. Working on his neon Americana follow-up, the Same Day EP, titled cleverly due to the fact that all three songs were written on the same day during the pandemic.

Robtober is already shaping into an incredible run of shows with high-caliber guests who are sure to command the stage alongside Robert Glasper. Glasper’s previous Blue Note shows have included tributes to Stevie Wonder, Roy Hargrove and J Dilla. A-list celebrities and unannounced special guests, including Dave Chappelle, Kanye West, Chris Rock, Questlove, Jill Scott, Common, Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli (Black Star) and Yebba are known to pop by the Blue Note to join Glasper for impromptu performances when he is in town.

In 2018, Glasper became just the 4th musician to hold a month-long residency at Blue Note, joining a short list that includes jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie, Chick Corea and Chris Botti. The residency was spotlighted in the New York Times, which proclaimed that Glasper is “probably the most prominent jazz musician of his generation.”

The Blue Note is special to me because it’s the pinnacle of jazz, but it doesn’t stop there. They allow me to step outside the box and be who I really am, unapologetically. They give me the venue to do it. The first two residences were amazing. We had to take a break but I’m really excited to be back and see my fans again. Not being able to perform for so long made it really clear how important the fans are so I can’t wait to go there and make some more history.

    Robert Glasper

Robert Glasper is the leader of a new paradigm in jazz, with a career that pans musical and artistic genres, winning 4 Grammys and 8 nominations across 7 categories, as well as an Emmy for his song on Ava Duvernay’s doc “13th”. October 2021 marks his return to the Blue Note, one of his first jazz stomping-grounds, for another record breaking residency (coined “Robtober”) as he takes over the Blue Note New York with an astounding 66 shows over 33 days, celebrating his musical career. Whilst his style consistently defies definition, Glasper’s residency demonstrate not only different eras, but also various parts of his musical community and the impact his collaborators have had on his development and style.

    Robert Glasper

Alex Kurland, Director of Programming at Blue Note says of Robtober, “This residency is a monumental and historic event within culture, with each show an experience and literally unforgettable. Robert’s residency always produces landmark and extraordinary moments, and to be able to move forward with it after such challenging times is deeply meaningful to the Blue Note, New York City, and to art and music culture. The caliber and range of Robert’s to-be-announced projects, special guests and collaborations, are an incredible testament to his icon status.”

  • It’s a Beautiful Day in Mister Rajer’s Neighborhood

On May 18, Mister Rajers’ Neighborhood dropped the new trippy summer anti-anthem “Cinco Uno Eight a psychedelic song about the Capital Region of Upstate New York.

Cinco Uno Eightis originally written, composed, and produced by L Niño. An idea to combine various local artists he had previously worked with in order to properly honor the 518 led to the development of this song. Whether it be the appearances of Mike Guagliardo and Showerpanther adding a distinctive synth sound, to including soothing ambient noises from artists from the local area.

Perhaps the highlight of the track however are the two local MC’s, Justin Sedefian aka Sav and Word Class aka Major Capers. “Each individual layered on an instrumental or vocal to create a truly odd, strange, ode to our beautiful homeland.”

Cameos were also made by Will Fredette of the Albany band El Modernist. The final edition of Kevin Lovely, who has known L Niño since they both attended Guilderland High School, took over mixing duties, while sound engineer legend David Tyo refined the track as the mastering engineer.

L Niño wrote the initial song and produced it and left “gaps” for people to spit verses on, and then had friends each add “layers” which which was chopped up and collaged by L Niño.

“L Niñois a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer based out of Troy, NY. He remained in the underground scene until achieving some local traction in the Albany area for his work with Major Niño which was recently in the running for an Eddie Award.

L Niño played violin all throughout highschool. But really didn’t start getting into production, until returning to Troy around 2015. He has taught himself guitar, bass, drums, and production. “My favorite thing to do is produce though, so this was a really neat opportunity to “produce” other musicians and have them spit on a track that was designed to be uh….spitted on?”

He has released music under numerous monikers and projects such as L Niño, Mister Rajers’ Neighborhood, Major Niño, and Jacques in the Bag. Featured in the Times Union and Floated Magazine with features on 102.7 WEQX-FM and local radio stations such as WCAA-LP 107.3 FM, L Niño has also played at well-known local Capital Region venues such as The Fuze Box, The Low Beat, and Troy Kitchen. In the wake of Covid, as venues start to open back up, L Niño hopes to bring more compositions from different projects and artists to the stage.

In L Niño’s other video, “Trumpistani Breakfast,” he compares peoples obsessions with McDonalds to others obsession and fascination with Trump in this wacky video.

“I guess the tongue-in-cheek metaphor would be like…imagine if there was an individual or a whole group of individuals who for some reason thought that McDonald’s makes the BEST burger ever! Which works since Trump LOVES McDonalds. (Not saying that there’s anything wrong with a McDonalds burger, there’s a time and place where it sure hits the spot, but to believe that it’s THE BEST EVER is uh….is something) So the video was just trying to convey being disturbingly obsessed with McDonalds…..or other things.”

    L Niño

You can stream the new single here and find out more by visiting the label’s website.

L Niño will be returning to gigging this summer and will begin doing small shows around the Capital Region as things start opening back up.

Listen to “It Starts When We Disappear” from SIDE-EYE NYC
  • The Pursuit of Color releases Bright and Shiny “Biodiversity”

The Pursuit of Color is an up and coming psychedelic indie rock artist from Dave Cooper, a guitarist, songwriter, and producer from Brooklyn.

“I just released my first brand new single this week, “Biodiversity”, a tribute to my mother. “Biodiversity” is about trusting the people you love to help you face your fears.” It was released on June 11th, 2021.

Dave Cooper first got into music when he was a young kid. Growing up, his brother would play KROK and Q104.3 in their room, listening to artists such as The Strokes, and Linkin Park. Once he began playing guitar at 9, music was completely interwoven into his daily life.

I got the chance to interview the “Pursuit of Color” artist, answering questions about his music inspirations along with his asperations.

Cooper’s musical influences include Vampire Weekend, Grateful Dead, Tame Impala and Anderson.Paak. When asked on how he would describe his music, Cooper says he wants his music to, “Reflect on a collection of everything I’ve ever loved and wanted to make combined together.” Using a funky, pop “Indie jam,” sound, he wanted to make unique music that, “Tugs on the Heartstrings, but also makes you want to dance and smile.”

He describes “Biodiversity” as a “bright and shiny song about a kid’s love for his mother, which is how the world looks when you’re young.” The song has an incredibly catchy beat, able to intersect the lyrics of the song with the vibe it gives off.

Through his music, Cooper tells stories of love, loss, and most importantly – trying to find the color to fill in between the lines of life.

The Pursuit of Color artist would one day love to collaborate with Anderson.Paak. Their styles of music are similar, with transcending beats propelled by a singing voice that blends perfectly with the beat. Take a listen to his brand new single, “Biodiversity,” below or on Spotify.
