their first American gig ever had been just over 4 years to the day, October 30, 1982, when they opened for Riot and Anvil in Staten Island at the \u2018Halloween Headbangers\u2019 Ball.&#8217;&nbsp; <em>Rock Until You Drop<\/em> (1981), <em>Wiped Out<\/em> (1982) and <em>All For One<\/em> (1983) &#8211; still stand as ahead-of-their-timel classics, raw, fast real metal records, all hailed being massively influential to the thrash metal scene in the later 80s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/10-31-86-v.jpg\" alt=\"raven\" class=\"wp-image-352127\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The band &#8211; made up of brothers John and Mark Gallagher on bass\/vocals and guitar, and hockey-helmeted Rob \u2018Wacko\u2019 Hunter on drums &#8211; had also made significant headway in the USA in the early\/mid-80s, first with a New York\/New Jersey-area late 1982 tour with Anvil, and then the legendary \u2018Kill Em All For One\u2019 US tour in 1983, where the band had crossed the States with opening band Metallica, bringing underground metal to all corners of America.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the time of their 1984 \u2018Live at the Inferno\u2019 US tour (with New York\u2019s own <a href=\"http:\/\/anthrax.com\">Anthrax <\/a>as support band), the band were signed to legendary NY\/NJ metal indie label Megaforce Records, and big enough to sell out Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan, where they headlined in August 1984 with Metallica and Anthrax opening &#8211; a show which resulted in Raven (by this time New York State residents, living in <a href=\"https:\/\/nysmusic.com\/site\/category\/regions\/cny\/cortland\/\">Cortland<\/a>, NY) being signed to major label Atlantic Records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/John-Mark-Gallagher-10-31-86-George-Putt-768x508.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-352128\"\/><figcaption>John &amp; Mark Gallagher &#8211; photo by George Putt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opinions differ on whether the band\u2019s Atlantic Records output advanced their career, or damaged it.&nbsp; The 1985 album, \u2018Stay Hard\u2019, certainly raised&nbsp; the band\u2019s profile outside the metal underground, especially via the MTV video for the single \u201cOn &amp; On\u201d, but their hardcore metal demographic scoffed at the less-thrashing sound of <em>Stay Hard<\/em>, and the rear-cover photo of the band looking more airbrushed and cleaned-up, as opposed to their more street-level, rough-hewn image of yore.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their underground credibility was further damaged by the early 1986 LP <em>The Pack Is Back<\/em>, on which producer Eddie Kramer gave them a more slick, polished sound, and the band dabbled with guitar synths and a more commercial sound.&nbsp; The band\u2019s slicker sound on <em>TBIB<\/em>, combined with a frankly ill-advised album cover, featuring the costumed band bursting out of sports lockers, damaged their standing with the growing thrash metal audience, yet was still too heavy to appeal to the Ratt and Motley Crue demographic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/raven-bassistvocalist-John-Gallagher-by-sean-mcferran.jpg\" alt=\"raven\" class=\"wp-image-352135\"\/><figcaption>Raven bassist\/vocalist John Gallagher &#8211; photo by Sean McFerran<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Summer 1986 the band righted the ship with the \u2018Raven Mad\u2019 EP, a welcome, raw return to form after the woefully overproduced and unusually weak <em>The Pack is Back<\/em> LP.&nbsp; This Halloween 1986 gig was the final date of the \u2018Mad\u2019 tour, after which they went upstate to make follow-up album <em>Life\u2019s A Bitch<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First band Never More did not impress: strange, horror-themed costumes and warbling vocals, terrible stuff.&nbsp; Second band Liege Lord were much better, Iron Maiden-stye metal, fast and powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/raven-guitarist-Mark-Gallagher-by-sean-mcferran.jpg\" alt=\"raven\" class=\"wp-image-352136\"\/><figcaption>Raven guitarist Mark Gallagher &#8211; photo by Sean McFerran<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raven, however, were on total form this night and erased any concerns that the TPIB record had changed their high-intensity metal assault. &nbsp; L\u2019Amour was pretty packed, and the set-list was fantastic \u2013 the band hit the stage with the <em>All For One<\/em>-era classic \u201cHung, Drawn &amp; Quartered\u201d, high-speed and raging, straight into the then-recent \u201cStay Hard,\u201d heaver live than he recorded version. The set featured more stuff (5 songs) from the great \u2018All For One\u2019 than any other album, three tunes each from \u2018Mad\u2019 and \u2018Rock Until You Drop\u2019 (including the classic 1980 debut 7\u201d single \u201cI Don\u2019t Need Your Money\u201d), a couple from \u201cStay Hard\u201d (the title track and the \u201chit\u201d, \u201cOn &amp; On\u201d) and only one from <em>The Pack Is Back<\/em>: \u201cYoung Blood\u201d which sounded much heavier live than on the record.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.nysmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/10-31-86-i-768x695.jpg\" alt=\"raven\" class=\"wp-image-352125\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only album they skipped was \u2018Wiped Out,\u2019 which is the only remotely negative thing I can say about this amazing show. Early in the gig John Gallagher&#8217;s wireless mike packed it in, and he played most of the show singing at a mike stand, which gave it a cool &#8216;early Raven&#8217; vibe.
