  • Video Premiere: The Dirty Pennies ‘I’m Your Man’

    A flyer for The Dirty Pennies show in March still hangs in the window of Rochester‘s Bug Jar. The venue has been a touchstone for this rust belt garage rock band. Shortly after venues like Bug Jar shut down, the band released a single “I’m Your Man.” Today, they premiere the lyric video for the song.

    The gritty song features staple driving guitar riffs that the band is known and loved for. But it also showcases the skills of their drummer, who goes all out on the fills. It’s a more aggressive song than the rest of groups catalog, fueled by the times in which we are living.

    The video gives fans an opportunity to follow along to the lyrics. Learn those words, because when live music resumes and The Dirty Pennies can play live, this is an anthem we’ll want to sing along to.

    Formed in Rochester, the group includes Ryan Klem on vocals and guitar and Lucas Howe on drums. Bassist Joe Mungo joined the band in 2015. The trio self-released their debut album Kick Out The Rocks in 2018, and an EP entitled EP in 2019. “I’m Your Man” is one of three singles they have released this year.   • Weird Al doesn’t throw away his shot with “Hamilton Polka”

    Just one day after the musical’s release on Disney+, Weird Al Yankovic uploaded a comedic mashup video to go along with his 2018 “Hamilton Polka.”

    Parody artist Weird Al is famous for his mashup polkas of famous songs. His first polka, “Polkas on 45,” was released in 1984. Weird Al has continued to make polkas throughout the decades using each generation’s music. His most recent is “NOW That’s What I Call Polka!,” which was released in 2014 and features songs by Miley Cyrus, One Direction, Daft Punk, and more.

    The single was released in 2018 as a part of the Hamildrop series, where different artists made remixes of Hamilton content throughout the year. Miranda has been a fan of Yankovic since he was a kid, and hearing the song was a dream come true for him. He and Weird Al have been good friends for some time, and Yankovic describes Hamilton as “maybe the greatest piece of art [he’s] ever seen,” so he pulled out all the stops to make sure that the “Hamilton Polka” was perfect. 

    The “Hamilton Polka” is Weird Al’s third polka to use songs by only one artist. “The Hot Rocks Polka” features songs only by The Rolling Stones, and his “Bohemian Polka” mashes up Queen’s famous “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The “Hamilton Polka”  still made history as being the first time Yankovic used multiple songs by one artist but from just one album. 

    He features some of the most popular songs from the show, including: “Alexander Hamilton,” “Wait For It,” “The Schulyer Sisters,” “Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down),” “You’ll Be Back,” “The Room Where It Happens,” “Right Hand Man,” “Guns and Ships,” “Washington On Your Side,” “Non Stop,” “History Has its Eyes On You,” and “My Shot.”

    Even with the songs’ uniformity, Weird Al manages to stay true to his style and add silliness to the single. The comically edited lip syncs of the video feature the 2016 cast of Hamilton performing Weird Al’s vocals. The actors’ dancing and blocking for each song is shown, finishing with the cast’s final bow.

  • Queens Rapper Kyngjo Drops Music Video for ‘Calling Me’

    On the heels of a run of successfully executed song releases, Lefrak City rapper Kyngjo has unveiled the official music video for his most popular record “Calling Me,” continuing to build buzz with the prospects of a debut project drawing ever closer. His journey as a rapper dates back to just over two years ago – as hopes for a future in basketball became bleak, thanks to an injured knee – now with his mind fully focused on being a successful rapper, he hopes to etch his name amongst a list of legendary Queens natives. 

    Produced by Multi-platinum and Grammy-nominated producer TheBeatPlug – who gained notoriety with producer credits on Joyner Lucas’ viral record I’m Not Racist – “Calling Me” follows the classic adage that as a rapper, women will follow, and so too will interminable and deceit-filled adventures bound to leave those involved with querulous significant others. The record sees Kyngjo divulge tales of his experiences playing the side piece to a spurned woman who has now fallen for him and… won’t stop calling. The Dream of Dre directed music video brings to life the tension between significant others when Kyngjo is involved with the women having to convince their man that he is indeed “just a friend.”
