  • Cassandra Kubinski is Ready to Build on Her Versatility

Cassandra Kubinski is a “storytelling oriented, piano-driven, theatrical pop” singer/songwriter from Saratoga Springs. Her passion for music from a young age propelled her into a successful career with Billboard charting albums. Kubinski’s career has already linked her to artists like Chris Botti, the Goo Goo Dolls, and Mary Ramsey of 10,000 Maniacs. Since her 2005 debut, Kubinski’s development as an artist continues to showcase her unlocked talent waiting to be released.

    A Musical Introduction

Growing up, Kubinski listened to a variety of artists because of her parent’s eclectic musical taste. Billy Joel, Carole King, Jackson Browne, and Joni were all a frequent part of the Kubinski’s family’s rotation of music. Kubinski’s theatrical exposure to Bette Midler, Guys and Dolls, Barbra Streisand, and Pippen shaped her into becoming a musical storyteller. Kubinski has even garnered praise from her musical idol, Billy Joel.

“Billy Joel is embedded in my DNA. My parents were listening to his music and loving him before I was even a twinkle in their eye. His storytelling, passionate vocals, and rogue piano playing style influenced me when I decided to be a songwriter,” Kubinski said.

During a 2008 concert in New York City, Kubinski’s dream of meeting Billy Joel came true. The full-circle moment of meeting her childhood music idol is one of the most memorable and surreal moments as an artist for Kubinski. If Billy Joel is willing, Kubinski would love to add a possible collaboration to her musical resume. Kubinski’s other musical hopes include opening up for Billy Joel, Jason Mraz, and Rob Thomas on tour one day. While the pandemic canceled touring for most artists, Kubinski looks forward to having a face-to-face interaction with concert audiences again. Performing at music venues with a beautiful outdoor component like Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado and Humphreys Concerts By The Bay in San Diego are at the top of her list.

    The Journey

While Kubinski’s musical aspirations keep her motivated as an artist, she has already amassed a couple of well-deserved accolades. Onward charted #97 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Album chart in 2016, while Holiday Magic charted #46 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Album chart in 2017. In 2020, Kubinski has released her “Stardust,” “Back to Earth,” and “Stardust (DJ Taz Rashid Remix)” singles. “Stardust” highlights Kubinski’s “epic pop and piano sound” with the combination of positive lyrics. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kubinski has gained a new perspective of how her songs can take on a different meaning from their initial release. “Dreams” started as a “whimsical look of a bittersweet moment of willing to let go because a better dream is coming” and now has a different significance of embracing the unpredictability of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I didn’t write “Stardust” in the pandemic I wrote it years ago. Since releasing it during the pandemic, I’ve heard from fans it was a sentiment they needed to hear to feel connected to something bigger, connected to nature, and reminded that they have power. This pandemic has made a lot of people feel very helpless and powerless. “Stardust” is about claiming and reclaiming your power. It takes on that meaning even though that’s not what I wrote it about,” Kubinski said.

Cassandra Kubinski and Tony Daniels shot the “Stardust” music video before the COVID-19 pandemic

    What’s Next

Looking ahead, Kubinski is already working on a song with Hannah Grace Colin from “Dance Moms.” Her upcoming song “Eternity” with DJ Sol Rising is a follow up to “Stardust” and is set to release in early January. As fans can look forward to more music, Kubinski continues to progress as an overall artist. From the release of her first album, Hold The Sun to her latest single “Stardust,” Kubinski has honed her ability and confidence to lead as an artist with a specific creative direction in mind. “Trust your vision,” Kubinski said. “When you see something for yourself, work on it, and do it. That’s your vision for a reason and you’re the one that has to execute on that vision.”

  • Black Suit Youth Release Environmental Anthem “The World Is Almost Over”

Alternative rock band from New York City, Black Suit Youth, released their new environmental anthem “The World Is Almost Over,” on October 30. The release date for their upcoming 5th LP, The World is Almost Over, is set for 2021 and will feature the newly released single.

    Black Suit Youth

Black Suit Youth blends a combination of punk rock, classic rock and indie rock into their music. The four-person group includes Bryan Maher (vocals/guitar), Fed Canalos (guitar), Juan Orellana (bass), and Ray Mazza (drums). The group’s original name started out as The New York Dynamite in 2004. In 2007, the band changed their name and released their debut album Our Future is History.

A song they eventually scrapped called “A Black Suit For My Youth” inspired the group’s name change. Since their formation, they have has released seven projects and had 10 different members throughout the group’s tenure. The band has amassed various touring experiences including opening up for acts such as Story of the Year, Alien Ant Farm, The Undead, and more. Following their 2017 release of their LP False South, Black Suit Youth looks to lean toward a new musical direction while maintaining their usual punk rock style.

The song is about the reality that we all see, but often ignore things while we deal with our immediate troubles. At some point, the bigger picture is going to become too big to ignore and it may already be too late to do anything about it. History is happening all around us and it gave us the opportunity to film in a desolate, boarded up Times Square, something you’d normally only see in a post-apocalyptic movie.

In 2016, they signed to 59 X Records and released False South in 2017. Black Suit Youth single The World Is Almost Over will be their second project released under the label.

Here is a look at the lyrics for “The World Is Almost Over” :

When we were young they said our future would be so bright we’d have to wear shades
    Well there weren’t completely wrong
It’s gonna be so hot we’re gonna melt in our graves
Now we’re lost inside a mindless paper chase
As the oxygen is leaking into space
    Yeah the worlds almost over
Throw a life preserver to a drowning polar bear
    Yeah the worlds almost over
So have another drink cuz no one cares
The ocean is the first casualty
Of our never ending worship of the GDP
So what is left for you and me?
When all the fresh water is owned by corporate entities
I’m sorry to say but things are looking bleak
It’s the new dark ages so pop off a few more tweets
Newsflash we’re all gonna die poor
As the refugees from the countries we destroy are knocking at our door
We don’t ever take any blame
    It’s always some Boogieman
    We’re too afraid of change
    Yeah we’re dead and gone
    We’re living on krypton
    We pretend it isn’t true
    Yeah we’re dead and gone
    Hallelujah it’s the great beyond
Ces la vie and bye bye baby blue

  • Brooklyn Artist Katie Rush Urges America to Vote with “World Leader”

Katie Rush, a Brooklyn singer/songwriter, is the latest artist to combine politics and music with the release of her latest single “World Leader.”  The song encourages the importance of voting and speaking up for what is right in all communities as the 2020 election approaches.  “World Leader” is a protest song that combines pop/dance music to address the troubles of the U.S. political climate and delivers a call to action for Americans to get out and vote.

    katie rush

Rush released “World Leader” on October 27, which Sam Mehran produced and Vincent Cacchione mixed/mastered the track. Marissa Alper edited the music video. “World Leader” was one of the last songs where Rush worked with Sam Mehran. Mehran, who was an American-Australian musician/songwriter/producer that co-founded the punk band Test Icicles, died on July 29, 2018.

Here is a look at the lyrics:

    Never in my life
Have I seen a World Leader
Who could take us to the very edge
Never in my life have I seen a great pretender let me down
I still believe In the right for this land to be free
    Oh, I embrace the people
    Not the king

But we know with every leader
They will guide or we resist
And we will count on each other
Not to make the same mistake
    And maybe down the line
To have support of our country
When we’re old or poor or sick

Never in my life have I seen a great destroyer who could tear apart our very land
Never in my life have I seen such a liar put us down
I still believe that we have the power
Won’t stand for this, can’t get us down
    Still gonna win

We look to our future leaders
    To guide the human race
    And we still stand together
    Despite our politics
    And maybe down the line
We’ll place our faith in them
Something better will come of this

Not only has Rush released a single just in time for the election but she also has Rush also released a special edition “zine” (short for magazine) to accompany her “Natural Mystics” song released on September 17. The “zine” is a 16-page story by Taraka Larson and Annabelle Weatherly created the art for the project. Rush describes “Natural Mystics” as an “Italo Disco inspired dance floor burner dedicated to all of the visitors from other stars.”

“I am frustrated but I am hopeful. I know a lot of us are. Let’s talk about the troubles in our current political climate. There are so many disservices in the world right now but there are also so many strong individuals challenging what is happening and leading us into the future. My new single “World Leader” expresses just how I am feeling. One of the final works I made with Sam Mehran this is probably the most personal and politically charged song I have ever released. Encompassing all my love and passion, I present “World Leader.”

  • Analog Players Society Set to Release “Chase” Music Video on October 30

The Analog Players Society (APS) will release their single “Chase” and the accompanying music video on October 30. “Chase” is an instrumental cinematic record sampled from the original recording session that created TILTED, the precursor to Soundtrack for a Nonexistent Film.

    Analog Players Society

“Chase” will be the first single from the complete Soundtrack for a Nonexistent Film, a sample-heavy production of Hip-Hop’s Golden Age, which will release on November 13 and will be available on Bandcamp on November 6. APS describes Soundtrack for a Nonexistent Film as an “intense, beat-driven, dystopian soundtrack for those moments when you need to escape deep into your earbuds.”

The Analog Players Society is a collective effort founded by producer and engineer, Amon Drum, that features a rotating ensemble of the top musicians in New York City. The various projects created by the APS include jazz, dub, funk, afrobeat, and Soul variety within them. APS has already posted a top 15 position on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart with their 2012 debut album Hurricane Season In Brooklyn. The “Chase” music video showcases the concept revolving around New York City and the resilience and drive of its people, even when running from the many things one can fear. Jude Goergen edited the video with Mona Kayhan and Amon Drum producing the video.

That’s NYC. We can keep running forever. It might be ridiculous, scary, and we might get tired, but don’t even try to outrun us.

Amon Drum, Producer and Engineer of Analog Players Society

Producers Amon Drum and Ben Rubin (aka Benny Cha Cha) collaborated with jazz luminaries including tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin (David Bowie’s last bandleader on Blackstar), pianist Orrin Evans (the Bad Plus), bassist Dezron Douglas (Ravi Coltrane), and drummer Eric McPherson (Fred Hersch Trio) to recreate the songs reflected by the producers to make Soundtrack for a Nonexistent Film. Since its August release, TILTED was included in Bandcamp’s “best jazz releases” and received strong support from Jazziz, Medium, Postgenre.org, NY Music Daily, and The Vinyl District.

  • New Single “Cry” from Indie Rocker Sam Himself Out Now

Despite the chaos created by the pandemic so far, Swiss Brooklyn-based artist Sam Himself (aka Sam Koechlin) released his new single “Cry” from his debut album expected in 2021. “Cry” is the first long-distance collaboration with his longtime producer and creative partner, Daniel Schlett. Sam recorded “Cry” partly at a local Basel Studio and partly in his attic during the quarantine.

    Sam Himself

Before the pandemic took a turn for the worst, Sam was on tour in Europe and only performed at one show before the remaining dates were canceled. With the travel restrictions immediately enforced, Sam was stranded between his native Switzerland and his chosen home in New York City. He decided to self-quarantine in his hometown of Basel, Switzerland, and released his long-awaited EP Slow Drugs.

I was driving across Switzerland before dawn to shoot the final takes of the video for ‘Like a Friend’; I’d been up for a long time, the tour had just been canceled and, according to the news, I wouldn’t be able to fly back to New York anytime soon. Then my phone rang and at the end of that call, the relationship I was in had ended, too. In a matter of hours, my life as I’d known it was over. For all the dread and confusion of that moment, I also felt ridiculous for licking my own wounds while the world around me looked like it was ending. That’s the dissonant state I tried to capture with ‘Cry’: it’s a farewell letter to my old life in New York and a relationship ended by the pandemic, but also a caustic reminder to myself not to wallow in self- pity amid a global catastrophe.

Sam Himself, about the inspiration for “Cry”

Capitalizing on the extended time in quarantine, Sam created the soaring ballad “Cry” that showcases his baritone climbing to new heights as the song evolves into a weeping hymn with authentically vulnerable lyrics. Sam plays all the instruments on “Cry” except for the bass and one lead guitar, which was added by members of his European touring band.  “Cry” is produced by Daniel Schlett and mastered by engineering legend Greg Calbi, who mastered songs for David Bowie and Bruce Springsteen.

  • Turkuaz Releases Exclusive Studio Footage of “Nightswimming”

In celebration of five years of their 2015 LP Digitonium, the nine-piece Brooklyn funk group Turkuaz has released never-before-seen in-studio footage of their fan-favorite song “Nightswimming.” Fans can pre-order a special anniversary vinyl of Digitonium, in both black and a limited-edition blue only available on their website. “Nightswimming” received high praise from Relix Magazine for its “saturated synth line and bubbling bass” as well as JamBase praising Digitonium as a “major progression” for Turkuaz.

    Turkuaz Nightswimming

“Nightswimming” was recorded at More Sound Recording Studios in Syracuse, NY. The track was produced by Dave Brandwein, mixed by Jason “Jocko” Randall, and mastered by Chris Athens. According to Brandwein, he created the lyrics and melody for Nightswimming before Turkuaz recorded it.”

After the first take, I’ll never forget when Jocko chimed in through my headphones saying, ‘Alright, there’s definitely a vibe going on in there. It’s no surprise that this is one of the fan favorites from Digitonium. It’s one of our favorites too!” Brandwein said. Shane Grace Allen (Danke) joins Turkuaz members on vocals with Nate Werth on percussion.

“Nightswimming” was born out of two demos that Taylor and I each made individually They were in the same key with the same tempo and feel. We started to wonder if we could combine them and as it turns out, we could! So what you hear is my original riff (the synth line that begins the song), with Taylor’s bass riff coming in over it. They weave and bob around each other in a very cool way that I think gives the song it’s unique feel.

    Dave Brandwein

In the meantime, Turkuaz has taken part in several virtual performances, including a performance of “Electric Habitat” for the virtual music festival Democracy Comes Alive. The festival partnered with Headcount support voter participation.

Turkuaz also created a web series called “Keep Your Mind In Tune” which presents conversations between musicians and experts about various topics as well as musical performances. Fans can watch the episodes on the Turkuaz YouTube channel or the Keep Your Mind in Tune YouTube Channel.
